Arizona Republicans to raffle off same model of handgun used in the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords!

From Raw Story:

The Republican Party in Arizona's Pima County, which is represented by Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), is in the midst of a fundraising raffle, $10 per entry.

The prize: the same model of gun that delivered a near-fatal blast to the Democratic lawmaker's skull outside a Tucson grocery store in January. Tucson is in Pima County.

The local party sent out its e-newsletter late last week advertising the raffle. On the third page of the seven-page document, a large illustration of the gun appears with the headline "Help Pima GOP get out the vote and maybe help yourself to a new Glock .40."

The winner of the gun will also receive a case, three 12-round magazines and grips for the firearm. "Tickets will go quickly for this firearm!" the blurb in the newsletter warns.

The $1,250 raised from the raffle tickets will go toward get out the vote efforts for the party.

The gun is a Glock 23, an updated model of the Glock 19 Jared Loughner used during his January 8, 2011 shooting spree that killed six and injured 13 others, including Giffords

Oh my God! What the fuck is wrong with these people?

How can ANYBODY, even Republicans, be this completely insensitive and hateful?

I'm sorry, but I am literally so pissed off by this that I am shaking and can't even type any more.

This is, at best, as tone-deaf as Sarah Palin's "blood libel" speech. I'd like to ask, "What are these people thinking?" but that presupposes that they ARE thinking. Of course, the more generous interpretation is that they aren't; otherwise, it becomes less clueless and more sinister.

Either way, epic FAIL for the Pima County Republicans.

Until the past year, I considered myself an independent voter. Watching the hijinks of the Republican party, however, I can't imagine ever again voting for a Republican.

OK first off let me say that I am one of Gabbies' biggest fans and an ardent Democrat. But lets face facts, Gabbie has been away from her office far too long and will probably be out for an even longer time. I would personally like to see Mark Kelly take over her seat to represent the district. Can you even see the T-Publicans try to run against the husband of a wounded hero like her let alone an astronaut and hero to many. We need all of the strength in Congress right now that can be mustered and not having Gabby there as a key player is a sore loss. I think the voters there would be amenable to Kelly taking over the seat till the elections but Jan Brewer would most likely have a hissy fit. I am even more surprised that Snow Drift Snooki hasn't bought a house there and announced she would run for her seat since she was the instigator of Gabbies' injury.

  65. @pat1755--

Well there’s the rub right there. I don’t want to live in “gun country” and I don’t want “gun country” in the United States, which is where I live. I want the United States to be a nation of responsible citizens who work together for equality (social AND economic) and justice for everyone and who work together so that all humans receive the education, housing and medical care which are--or should be--our basic human rights.

I don’t see “gun culture” or the culture of guns in this country as advancing any of the goals of a civilized nation. I don’t want the United States to rank first--first!--in per capita gun ownership in the WORLD. 88 guns per 100 residents, in 2007, according to Wikipedia. Too often, the “right” to unfettered gun ownership directly infringes on MY rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

And yes, the model of the gun is extremely relevant. Remember, there are no coincidences, to quote Sarah Palin (AIP).

The cruel nature of people today is mind and body numbing...I'm going to have a cocktail and not for a good reason. How did we get to this point? Too much TV, or too little education?

The second thought is that it is a SP/handler strategy. We all have heard that the "blood libel" video was the nail for SP. Her handlers know she has to get past that...what better way than coming to the rescue on her Paul Revere horse and ringing those bells that she is opposed to this Glock raffle and "denounces" it for its insensitivity?! Those AZ GOP handlers don't think anyone would figure it out, thinking everyone has the IQ of 83 (SP) or less.

It is possible, too, that this was what the undoubtedly conservative gun store owner donated to raffle. PLEASE don't think I'm sticking up for them - I voted Nader in my first Presidential election. But I think they just didn't THINK, just like they always neglect to do.

The Christian Conservative Activist are resorting to ¨shock¨ politics. A lot of the comments I type are never printed. They are too nasty, tasteless and cruel for IM. I am a conservative, and I know these people. They are worse than you can ever imagine. I fit right in with them.

President Obama will be reelected IN SPITE OF WHAT THE ECONOMY is doing. The GOP is openly sabotaging his efforts to improve our economy and to increase job growth. And they will not get away with it.

    What else could they raffle?

*A romantic weekend at a Bed & Breakfast, complete with nice bottle of wine.

    *Hot-air balloon flight for 4.

    *Rafting excursion through Grand Canyon.

*Entry/box seats to some "studly" horse show such as the Scottsdale Arabian auction.

*Personal behind-the-scenes tour of some off-limits place. (With this laser, I could carve my initials on the moon... bwah-ah-hahhh!)

If they simply wanted to raffle an object, they could have chosen something made in America (or even Arizona itself) such as a really nice turquoise watch or necklace. If it was a Two Grey Hills weaving, even this lifelong democrat would be tempted to buy a ticket.

Even a hunting rifle or shotgun would be understandable, but a Glock is a deliberate poke-in-the-eye by unrepentant wanna-be murderers.

Disgusting. The people in this district should just refuse to participate. But then, Perry is leading the GOP right now, and he proudly waves his loaded gun around at crowds as proof that he's manly. God, the GOP has become the party of criminals and murderers. We'd better get everyone voting next year and send a clear message that this will not become the status quo in America. Take this country back from the traitors who would ignore the Constitution, demonize women and kids, kill the poor, deport all aliens, and generally act like dictators.

So what is it that makes a gun manufacturer "reputable"? Is it that Glock offers weapons with magazines that hold only 10 or 12 rounds as well as magazines that hold 33 rounds? How socially responsible of them.

There you go again, Gryphen, spouting your typical socialist hatred without having all the facts first.

For your information, Mr. Fancy Pants Alaska Liberal, the Glock semi-automatic pistol has been OFFICIALLY ENDORSED by the GOP AND the American Society of American Tea Bagger Associations And Tea Bagger Affiliated Organizations (also known by the abbreviation: A.S.S.H.O.L.E.S) for treatment of male erectile dysfunction! (Along with the Chevrolet Corvette, Hustler Magazine and Niagra Brand Chewable Vitamins.) All of your readers NOT living under trees already know this, but apparently YOU do not!!

According to the latest Cock Brothers-funded research at the ultra conservative Ultra Conservative Institute for the Study of Older Caucasian Male/Younger Female Sexual Relations only an extremely bulging... um... wallet and undetectable (ha ha ha) hair replacement therapies outgun - so to speak - the handgun and the gas guzzling sports car for improving sexual performance or at the very least distracting the female from noticing any deficiencies in that department.

So, before criticizing the conservatives for yet another in their endless parade of tone-deaf, offensive gimmicky, get your... um... facts straight!

HE openfired on a crowd and seemed to randomly shoot the gun, killing a variety of people. It sounds like his inner problems had just bubbled up to bad that he couldnt contain himself.

    9:40 AM

Realistically noone ever goes into public with a gun and the thought in their head to simply injure someone. Guns are made to kill, and particularity the model that Loughner was using with and extended clip. These guns have no purpose in sport shooting or hunting.

I am a veteran of 16 years and own many guns myself but am tr ained in their use and responsible in their keeping.

When you have a lawless west mentality like in AZ where anyone has access to guns no matter their background then you will have kooks buying them and using them for besides their intended purpose.

If you defend someone who is plainly guilty of the misuse of a firearm you are almost equally culpable of the act itself.

Sarah stirred up this hornets nest with putting bulleyes on candidates areas and to my mind should be drummed from any chance of ever running again for elected office.

How about a night in a canvas tent with Arizona's moaning Bristol? The only thing is you must supply Bristol's foreplay stuff which are cheesecakes, wine coolers and about 1/2 dozen Big Macs which will about do it. Arizona Republican Justifies GOP Raffle of Glock Model Used To Shoot Giffords

Mike Shaw shamed himself today on CNN defending the Arizona Republicans’ raffling of the same kind of Glock used to shoot Democratic Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and six others in Arizona just last January. CNN’s Randi Kaye couldn’t seem to get through to Shaw, who is the Pima County GOP Chairman Pro Tem, that raffling of this Glock at this time might be inappropriate. Mike couldn’t get off of his Don’t Tread on Me speech about how he had the right to be an utterly soulless thug. It never seemed to occur to him that as human beings we also have the ability to show empathy and compassion for others.

Here’s the video from Crooks and Liars:

  120. I'm puzzled about what the GOP is striving to "prove" or even "fight for" here.

Like, when was their Gun Ownership in question?

Now, as gun owners here have stated, there is NO reason ANY person needs to have a semi-automatic weapon in their possesion. I can see the "draw" for people to want to shoot one. So save it for the gun shows, or those outdoor event where people pay and there's some safety regulation.

My neighbor does NOT need to have one.

Your neighbor does NOT need to have one.

My point being, that after the shooting I believe there were calls for STRICTER GUN REGULATIONS. That is NOT the same thing as taking people's guns or rights away.

Once again, these disgusting, opportunistic sleazebags are feeding to the very bottom feeders, using the dog whistle of "They're tring to take our guns!"

When it was the act of an INSANE, SERIOUSLY disturbed individual who NEVER should have owned a SINGLE GUN in the first place.

Oh my God!!! We are wasting SO MUCH TIME actually REAPAIRING our poor country!! These fucking assholes keep RIPPING APART OUR WOUNDS!!

ABC aired a special on Gabby about a week after she was shot, and at the time, Mark Kelly said he wasn't interested in politics. But that was a long time ago, while he was preparing for his final space flight. I hope he changes his mind, and I hope that will allow Gabby the time make a recovery back to Congress.

TPM has an interview with the previous (to the "pro-tem" chairman that CNN interviewed) Pima County GOP Chairman who says raffling off a firearm now is not a good idea; but it's NOT the first time a "firearm" has been raffled to raise money (see below or the TPM article).

I agree with other the other commenters who said raffling a rifle would make sense; but the GOP is raffling off a *semi-automatic weapon* that accepts magazines with 33 rounds? I wonder what type of "firearm" was previously raffled off by the Pima County GOP.

Here's a portion of TPM article:
"'There's a woman who has a bullet in the brain and who everybody is wishing a full recovery,' Brian Miller, the immediate past chair of the Pima County GOP told TPM. 'I don't think that raffling off a firearm right now is probably the right way to go.'

Miller says the people who took over the party -- and booted him from his position after he criticized local law enforcement for shooting a Marine in a controversial raid on his home in May -- are from the "my way or the highway" wing of the GOP who don't pay much thought to the political fallout from their actions.

While he said that raffling off a firearm to raise money is something he did himself when he ran (and lost) in the 2010 Republican primary in Gifford's district, it's not something he'd do now."
