Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Lawrence O'Donnell discusses the brutality suffered by the "Occupy Wall Street" protestors at the hands of the New York City police department.
Why is it that when peaceful protesters congregate to speak truth to power they are beaten down? Is it to silence them? To inspire fear in others so their ranks will not swell? I remember Vietnam protests, civil rights protests--all peaceful--and the police violently crack heads and arrest people. These are not terrorists! They are your friends, co-workers, neighbors, sons, daughters and brothers. They are not the enemy. This is not the way to treat peaceful protesters.
And then we see Neo-Nazi groups, white supremacist assholes, and the deranged Westboro Baptist Church idiots left alone to freely exercise their First Amendment rights to free speech. No one silences them.
My point is not that the powers that be are promoting the evil that these groups spew--it's just that the Constitution is working for these hate groups in exactly the way it was designed to work. It does not seem to be working for the peaceful protesters though. It seems to me that when concerned citizens with a very, very truthful message speak out against the establishment THAT IS SCARY to the folks in power. The gov't knows most regular folk won't give the time of day to those extremist hate groups I mentioned. In fact, regular folk simply ignore their hateful messages. But they retain their right to protest don't they? Isn't it amazing when people are getting close to revealing the truth about what's wrong with this country--utter greed and preservation of the status quo for the wealthy--that they are beaten down and silenced. The powers-that-be don't want people to think too deeply about their message. They might just join the protest too.
video of the march, and how the protesters were treated by members of the NYPD - they drag a woman on the ground by her hair and then pepper spray girls who are watching:
Shame on the officers who unnecessarily crossed the line, figuratively and literally. I would think in this era of smart phones they would watch themselves a bit more. I'm sure NYC lawyers are climbing over each other trying to find out who those assaulted people are.
And shame on our media. MSM coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protest was almost non-existent. Had they been there I don't things would've gotten so out of hand. But then again, this is the same MSM that swept McCain's foul choice of VP under the rug.
you know people when some of us try to tell you how this country has been turned into a police state you dont pay attention.
people being arrested for growing a food garden, YES it is true!, people in jail for taping the police even though its legal, the Amish being raided for selling milk!!!, YES it is true, i could go on, but the point is unless you realize you are all losing your liberty and your rights nothing else matters.
we can vent about the affects that the insane palin has on he country buT she is really a distraction...BUT dont lose sight of the police dressed like storm troopers in riot gear ak-47s tanks and armed vehicles..arresting intimidating and denying your civil liberties at every turn.
..dont think that watching a football game and having a war plane fly overhead makes you a patriot.. remember this!!...there are forces behind these puppet politicians who want every dollar you earn and every freedom you are entitled to.
What can we do? Who will act on this? Suggestions? This isn't the country that I want my children to live in. This isn't the country that the Founding Fathers wanted either (I don't believe--I'm old, but not that old). I don't want to be passive on this, but I don't know what to do.
It's amazing to me that the regular channels are not covering these demonstrations on Wall Street.
I think rioting is going to increase throughout the U.S. We are going to be no different than some of the European countries that are rioting.
I feel it is warranted and should be done continually on Wall Street as well as in Washington D.C.
It needs to be directed toward the House of the U.S. Congress (that are on vacation AGAIN!) and most specifically toward the asshole Republicans currently holding office back there.
And, they ALL need to be voted out of office this next go around. Tenures need to be affixed to people holding office as well.
The police in New York should be investigated after watching the video on the Lawrence O'Donnell show yesterday. It was a 'peaceful' demonstration and the police made it otherwise.
I'm embarrassed for America! Our government is as evil as some of the countries we have been raised to believe are evil.
During the past ten years or so it's become so apparent that we have some of the most corrupt politicians in the world.
Hi Jo (6:07 am), I feel the same way. We can call/contact Mayor Bloomberg's office. Meanwhile, there was also more detailed info posted for contacting the NY Police dept - though I have to go back to find it on the related websites.
I have found one other resource that was very responsive and may be fruitful for others.
"New York City, Civilian complaint review board" - an independent agency that is taking the complaints against the police.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/ccrb/html/contact.html
If you call, they will ask your name & phone or email in case they need statements for a case later. They also will want to know -what- video or info you are reacting to, and, if possible, the url for where the video is posted.
I am so angry! But it seems that most people don't give a damn as long as it's not directed at themselves. My husband is one of those people. He does not feel that this is a big deal, but I went to 'The Last Word' and saw what happened to those two women behind the barricade. They were just standing there quietly -- looking around at the other protesters -- and the white shirt just walks up and pepper sprays ALL of them in a sweeping motion. At the very least, he needs to lose his job or be demoted. It's disgusting that these people who are supposed to "serve and protect" are abusing their power. I am trying to find out how to make a complaint, and I intend to send emails to the Chief of Police, the Police Commissioner, and the Mayor. This cannot be allowed. More and more we are hearing of abuse of power by police officers and it must STOP. This is the United States of America, not Nazi Germany!!! Please, everyone, join me in protesting this abuse.
I agree with dianedp. Imagine if this were an anti-Obama protest and some teabaggers got maced or brutalized this way? Would the media still ignore it? Its sickening if you think about it.
Old angry white men with loaded guns protesting first black president = OKAY!
Young college girls protesting wall street banksters = YOU GET MACED!
I'm grateful to those who listed links, it's some small comfort to do anything to support these protesters.
I'm sick of the media in my country. My son's roommates at college are from Italy, germany, and russia. They subscribe to these channels on cable, and the coverage of this dispicable behavior is being shown, commented on, and updated all during the day. I haven't seen these feeds, but come on, America! Russia germany and Italy, and bbc that I saw myself can cover this misjustice- while we have game shows, cooking shows and soaps that can't POSSIBLY get interrupted. News shows that barely mention it and show fake "tsk tsk" sympathy?
Finally.
ReplyDeleteMacing a bunch of females that were ALREADY inside the police containment, and who did not have weapons is a horrific abuse of power.
ReplyDeleteIf Bloomberg or the police commissioner does not throw them off the force, then they don't care about their citizens.
Everyone can make a mistake in their daily job, or get carried away, but you could kill someone with asthma by doing that.
Thanks for posting that.
ReplyDeleteThere's also a live feed here

Hopefully, the ACLU will come down on this department like stink on poo. BTW, this is Sarah Palin's America if she were in power.
ReplyDeleteWatched this last night........can you say "seething"..?
ReplyDeleteI find this to be disgusting.

There's a good story here

This is truly horrifying.
ReplyDeleteLawrence O'Donnell just gets better and better!

they want control over everything you do..
WAKE UP!
Can you imagine if they did this to people who were demonstrating outside of Planned Parenthood?
ReplyDeleteCould you imagine the outrage on the republican side?
Are they getting away with this because there are NO networks covering this peaceful demonstration??
Someone's head is being crushed against the ground, is it a young unarmed woman at a Rand Paul rally?
ReplyDeleteWhat?
It's a cop authorized by New York City to assault peaceably assembled citizens?
