Roger Ailes steers Fox News away from the hard right and back towards the middle, leaving Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin abandoned by the side of the road.

Courtesy of The Daily Beast:

The left has long branded Fox a propaganda arm for Ailes’s pugnacious conservatism, and while his journalists maintain they play it straight, the network has certainly provided ample fodder for liberal detractors. But as President Obama’s popularity has plummeted and the country has grown increasingly sick of partisan sniping, something unexpected happened. Roger Ailes pulled back a bit on the throttle.

He calls it a “course correction,” quietly adopted at Fox over the last year. Glenn Beck’s inflammatory rhetoric—his ranting about Obama being a racist—“became a bit of a branding issue for us” before the hot-button host left in July, Ailes says. So too did Sarah Palin’s being widely promoted as the GOP’s potential savior—in large measure through her lucrative platform at Fox. Privately, Fox executives say the entire network took a hard right turn after Obama’s election, but, as the Tea Party’s popularity fades, is edging back toward the mainstream.

While Fox reporters ply their trade under Ailes’s much-mocked “fair and balanced” banner, the opinion arm of the operation has been told to lower the temperature. After the Gabrielle Giffords shooting triggered a debate about feverish rhetoric, Ailes ordered his troops to tone things down. It was, in his view, a chance to boost profits by grabbing a more moderate audience.

As Joe McGinniss reported Roger Ailes was beyond pissed off that Palin made that taped statement after Giffords was shot, and essentially has been done with her ever since. (Gee, I wonder who Joe's anonymous source was for THAT story?)

Palin was a huge moneymaker for Fox News, right up until her crazy started to blossom, and her beauty started to fade.  Now she is just a tenacious dingleberry refusing to let go until Ailes can finally shake his fat ass hard enough to dislodge her.

I have to wonder if Palin attorney John Tiemessen will have yet ANOTHER Palin enemy to sue now.

Okay the idea of little Johnny Tiemessen going up against Random House AND News Corps actually made me laugh out loud.

But you know Palin would pick fights all day long, just so long as SHE did not have to fight them, or pay for them, or have any of her secrets revealed to the media because of them.

So no, she's not suing ANYBODY!

A branding issue? Just in the last year?

Jagg-offs. If only they bring Al Jazeera producers in to 'train' the Fox News staff, I'll believe this mea culpa. Even if this didn't happen, we all know that Roger is going to Roger Sarah and let the contract expire. She'll be begging them to let her on to speechify when Jessica Beehive doesn't let her on her own show.

By the way Sarah, you appear to be starving your body of all those good clean wild Alaskan meats and nutrients - if your menopause hasn't gotten you granny, your malnutrition is taking care of your menstruation because of low body fat. I'll bet you still believe you're heavy.

You aren't heavy, intellectually or physically.

Oh come on Gryphen, John hails from Willamette and ASU, bastions of non-elite professionals who can tackle complex civil jury trials.

Are the prayer warrior chain emails heading his way to tell him that he is David and that he is working to slay the giant?

He'll need that smoke blown up his ass, he's as in over his head as Sarah ever gets herself in.

Of course Quitler isn't suing anyone. She's melting down from the revelation, in print, that she had a fling with a Black guy, and her bots just cannot handle it. The money will dry up, too.

Meantime, FN ratings fall and sponsors pull out--that's money to Ailes and Murdoch, and has nothing to do with going to the "center" whatsoever. They're just as rightwing as ever and will remain that way.

Tiemessen referencing an "illegally" obtained email may be a mistake.

The Alaska Dental Society is one of his clients? I'll bet he was one of the turds that fought the Alaska Native Dental Health Aid Programs that brings oral care to villages.

ADS fought it tooth and nail (pun intended) furious that the Alaska Native community was working to address crucial services since it is impossible to get non-emergent access to dentists.

Remember Congressman Gossar, the AZ tea-party newbie has suffered staffing issues since importing Alaskan Palin supporters to run his office. In January, Gosar assured those concerned about Robinson and Van Flein’s lack of political experience that he trusted both men and that their relationships with Palin wouldn’t affect his office.

Robinson was and remains disgusted about Native access to Dental care. Offering instead to send essentially Tea Party cruise ships packed with Dentists once a year to the villages instead of a year-long or consistently rotating presence.

I'll betcha John Tiemessen threatened to sue all the time, I'll bet this rag-tag Palin association made Jack Abramoff jokes about Natives and dentistry til the Mat-Maid cows came home.

It's okay to subsidize and create a market for Valley dairy farmers who can't run their own households, much less a heavily regulated industry, but allow the Alaska Native Health Care managers to create programs to tackle chronic oral health care needs?

The drills come out. Only the rich and powerful Dentists can pick and chose who and when to service in the Alaskan hinterlands (Wasilla isn't so remote and inaccessible after all) Only Dr. Robinson can Drill, Baby, Drill.

Nicole Wallace from the McCain campaign is releasing a new book about a female President undergoing impeachment proceedings for protecting her female VP, who is being investigated for fitness for office. (H/T to NSG on Laura's blog.)

Wallace was on the Today Show plugging the book this morning. Remember when she sent that little warning to Sarah that she might want to scale back on her presidential ambitions lest some very dirty little secrets come out? Well, looks like she wasn't shitting around.

Faux Fox and Ailes = Faux 'course correction', Faux Fox and Ailes.

It's no different than Candidates talking out of both sides of the mouth -- in order to get votes -- Fox is doing the same.

Fox/Ailes along with those Candidates truly believe everyone is stupid enough to fall for their BS. They will 'talk' the game - but will never 'walk' the game. We've seen it before and most certainly in many of the State elections -- they talk one thing and if they win it's full throttle ahead for issues not even mentioned on the campaign. Wisconsin anyone!! And Ailes is no different.

Rethugs will do anything for a win. They don't give a rat's ass about you -- they just wanna win and then screw the crap out of you. The same as with Fox/Ailes is doing as the numbers are going down and they've lost all their 'name' hosts. They're doing a new cattle call to fill the positions as Trump will soon be dumped soon for being a 'birther'

Still, I'm skeptical of Ailes' claim. He's a right wing hack and he'll always be a right wing hack. He flushed Beck because targeted advertisers were refusing to have their ads run during his show.

    You wrote:

When and how was Palin ever "a huge moneymaker for Fox News?" The only way she could ever directly contribute to FauxNews revenue is by having her own show which was successful at attracting advertiser dollars. She has never had her own FauxNews show, therefore even as a regular contributor, she has had little to no impact on attracting advertisers.

She has always been little more than part of the Murdoch/Ailes stable of prominent GOP POTUS wannabes who FauxNews kept on the payroll banking that at least ONE of them would be successful. Additionally, Palin - at least until recently - made little Rupert and Roger stand at attention. Given the documented history of Palin's EXTREMELY LIBERAL view toward her marital vows, it is not inconceivable that Palin might have paid visits to little Roger and Rupert personally.

Palin has never made much, if any, money for FauxNews. She is a FauxNews mascot at best.

All he is asking for right now is for them to not destroy any emails or correspondence. I don't really see what they want.
If they had a solid case, wouldn't they just sue?
Maybe they are consulting with other attorneys and this is just a warning letter to let them know to preserve all correspondence.
I'm sure Random House and Joe knew insane Sarah would scream lawsuit, so I am sure the book was carefully checked. They aren't stupid!

This was the first reason I kept away from Fox and it's unreasonable chip-on-their-shoulder crew. Why did it take Roger Ailes so long to realize that listening to his middle school obnoxious self-righteous gang of stone bearers have stones in their own lives.

I agree with your comment except that Chuckles didn't help the child molester get his job back, he got a mob together to rally to get the principal - who had turned a blind eye to the teacher who'd molested 17 or so girls - his job back. The teacher ended up in jail, I believe.

I'm sure she'll be asking about Joe's book, and when Sarah says "I can't discuss that due to legal proceedings", Greta can fire back with "So you are going to sue", since a stupid letter from her lawyer is hardly legal proceedings. Greta is not going to miss a chance to show off her legal knowledge, is she? Also, too, why just Joe's book? Are her bots going to pressure her to sue Levi? Does this mean that Levi's book is true then, since he received no letter? His book came out the same day as Joe's, so his book must be true, right? What about "Fred" and they babygate book? The bots will really be upset if she doesn't sue "Fred." She is setting up a precedent for herself that she will not be able to back out of. How can one run for President when they're taking down "the haterz?" People talk about Sarah's political instincts which I don't dispute.

However, political maneuvering is easy on the local level when everything is going your way. The real tough politics come on the national scene with the big players such as AIles.

As long as Sarah stuck to the script and was willing to be used as a puppet, everything was going to be fine (and she would have gotten her highly desired presidential campaign). But she couldn't control her urges to try dominate the scene and is now suffering for it.

Her ways of handling things when going bad for her show very amateurish capabilities and indeed demonstrate that she is way over her head operating at the national level.

Oh, that just brought on a wave of nausea....

  66. Ailes can suck it. He created the Palin Monster. He gave her a platform and now she won't freaking get lost and we all have to suffer thru her idiocy day in and day out.

I hope Palin takes the entire Fox Network down with her. They deserve it for all the misinformation and lies they have printed, reported, spewed over all these years.

I for one won't miss any of those Fox News buffoons. CNN can keep trying but they have been largely irrelevant for years. All the CNN coverage of the threatened lawsuit is to help more people wonder what exactly is in Joe's book to cause all this fuss.

Ailes made a giant mistake allowing Palin on his network. She's too stubborn and egotistical to be contained.

It really is stunning, isn't it? ALL Palin had to do was hang tight, finish ONE term, stay quiet, learn some stuff...heck...learn to pretend to know some stuff, even! But no...she HAD to go rogue...she HAD to take matters into her own grubby hands and now look....it's a total clusterf@ck. Just like every single thing she undertakes.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving individual.

Just the thought of the flying monkey squad under the klieg lights of the court room is a hilarious prospect.. ALL would have to be reveled and all the flailing parts of the monkey squad even over at the sea-o-pee would be exposed.... how glorious...

    BRING IT ON!!!!

It is the actual pursuit of a suit that is the critical consideration. If you threaten a suit, you might make headlines, and people immediately question the truth of the assertions in McGinniss’ book, without proving that they are in fact not true. By Palin having her attorney make this threat, it is not even Sarah or Todd Palin going on record to say that anything in McGinniss’ book is untrue. If a lawsuit was actually being contemplated, an astute attorney would never THREATEN suit. Instead he would gather as much evidence as possible, and then simply FILE suit. Especially in the case of a slander or libel suit, where proving the truth of the matter in question is the critical consideration, gathering evidence first would be critical.
In the case at hand consider the type of evidence that would be relevant if Sarah Palin should actually file a suit alleging that the information reported was untrue. The attorneys for Joe McGinniss would be entitled to take the following depositions (where the witness would be sworn to tell the truth, under penalty of perjury):
    1. Glen Rice: He would be required to answer detailed questions about the sexual experience he had with Sarah Palin. While most of us would NOT want to know the details, certainly Sarah Palin would not want disclosure by Glen of how he rated this experience and just how accomplished Palin was in the sack.
    2. All people in the Wasilla community that might have ever seen Sarah and/or Todd snorting cocaine.

Why does Sarah's own family hate her so much? Is it because she is an embarrassment to them? They are ashamed of her. Face it sarah, you aren't good enough for your own family and you certainly aren't good enough for America. The American people let you know that way back in 2008, yet you're still around. Are you really that pathetic and desperate? Take a hint, no one likes you. Truth hurts.

How come Tawd's family has nothing to do with Sarah Palin?

Todd's parents did not go to the RNC to support Toad or Sarah.

Todd's parents did not go to Sarah's book signing to support Toad or Sarah.

Todd's parents did not go on the SarahPac sponsored Sarah Palin Family Vacation?

Has Toad's parents or siblings been to Sarah's new house in Wasilla or Arizona?

Any and everybody who might have knowledge of the truth about Trig’s birth mother. Chapter 19 of Joe’s book related to the rumors that Trig is not Sarah’s child. Mr. McGinniss would have the subpoena power of the Courts to take the depositions of Cathy Baldwin Johnson, nurses at the hospital, and even require a DNA test of Sarah, Todd, and Trig. It would be a dream come true for thousands of people around the country, if Sarah and Todd Palin would be forced to testify under oath about whether or not Sarah concocted the entire Trig birth story!

That she's threatening to sue the Publisher and Joe -- as we've seen so many times -- it displays how thin skinned she is. Van Fleabag and this other ditz lawyer earn their PAC payments by sending threatening letters but have never had the balls to follow through as they know - they've never had a case.

Her no ability to 'turn the other cheek'.

Kitty Kelly's many 'unauthorized' books - on Sinatra, The Queen, etc. -- not once has Kelly been sued

Hey Sarah. The only way you'll ever feel avenged is if you SUE THE ENTIRE WORLD! Think of all the publicity you'd get for the rest of your life!

LOL that would show them wouldn't it?

    Absolutely, @ 7:25.

To me it shows how poor the big players' judgement has been, that they never identified her glaring temperament and personality "quirks". She's her own worst enemy, and hence a bad risk for them.

Always was, always will be. What part of that didn't they perceive and/or anticipate? Whose advice were they taking in those earlier days? Bill Kristol's? David Frum's? Who else was in the background?

She may have had initial superficial appeal and charisma for their base, but they had to know that wasn't going to be enough in the long term. (I guess I just answered my own question - they intentionally waited so they could shove her through quickly without proper press vetting and public scrutiny, hoping they'd take the White House before everyone realized what a nightmare she is.)

The "fans" will be launching their attack on fox shortly. I'm sure this will be seen as a personal slap at their queen. To show you how little it takes to be put on the "enemies list", here is a comment from the pond:

"You can add Megyn Kelly to the list of Fox on air folks that have disrespected Sarah Palin. Just a few minutes ago with Carl Cameron discussing Fatso Christie, Megyn said.... "Sarah Palin is sitting on the fence, she is on the bottom of all the polls now"

And the email and twitter bombarding has begun.

If Fox News was told to veer more toward the center after the Giffords shooting, I don't think it's a lesson any of their newscasters heeded.

They still bash Obama for the most mundane things, like his choice of paper clip or an expensive bracelet *loaned* to his wife for a special event (which they conveniently forget to mention). They use racist rhetoric, like calling a rapper a "thug," suggesting Obama is "chugging 40s" and calling Michelle's bracelet "bling," and online photos of Obama's birthday party that show him next to two black quests and describe it as a "hip-hop" party. This is all designed to remind their viewers that Obama is black.

They still edit video to make an anti-liberal point (like editing Hoffa's statement). They still lie about liberals and defend corporate greed and the republicans who stand for it. Look at Bill O'Reilly threatening to quit if his taxes are raised, even though he told Obama 2 years ago that a 20% tax on capital gains seemed fair.

And they still have Sarah Palin on to whine and insult the president. True, not as often, but that's because they've replaced her with guests who can eviscerate Obama more effectively and because even the right is not that into Sarah Palin anymore. The more she is on television, the more apparent it becomes she cannot speak English very well and that something is wrong with her weekly changing wigs.

  78. This cracks me up! HERE is $P's counsel's self-stated expertise:

"Mr. Tiemessen is a trial lawyer with an emphasis on the defense of professional malpractice and occupational licensing cases. He has successfully tried more than a dozen complex civil jury trials, including matters involving wrongful death and catastrophic injuries with claims in excess of $1 million.

"Mr. Tiemessen has lectured on various medical, legal, risk management, and trial practice issues for CNA Insurance Companies, Medical Insurance Exchange of California, NORCAL, The Dentists Insurance Company, the University of Alaska, Multiple Risk Managers, Inc., Alaska Dental Society, Interior Dental Assistants Society, Tanana Valley Clinic, Sportsmedicine Fairbanks, and Fairbanks Clinic."

And this has to do with the content of Joe McGinniss' fine book... how??

IF the Palins sue Joe, and have to prove that Trig is theirs, will the groups of right to lifers who paid her to give speeches be able to sue to get their money back? She got thousands of $$$ plus air fares and hotels under false pretenses. All her screeches are on tape, lying through her veneers. The groups she ripped off have to be upset, she cost them millions of $$$.

I totally agree with you that the threat of a lawsuit truly means nothing.

During my illustrious career as a real estate developer (during the good old days), three times i threatened a lawsuit...

... but, each time, i had my affidavits and evidence in hand ~ ready to walk across the street to the courthouse and actually file the suit.

My 'threat' of the suit was to give the person (or municipality) i was tangling with one last chance to comply before the 'promise'.

Why threaten an action if you can't back it up with reality? In all three incidents, i never actually had to spend the money for a suit, but i probably would have had to if i hadn't had my ducks in a row before i laid out the ultimatum.

If Ailes thinks he is going to enjoy a modicum of success in appealing to the centre, he is sadly mistaken...unless of course he's planning on inviting the Simpsons as regular political pundits.

But if she sues both side will be able to do "Discovery" and look at the other sides records.

Will Sarah dare to let McGinnis and his publisher's lawyers rummage through her papers, and question possible witnesses, openly.

Puh leeze be that stupid Sarah.

This is total nonsense. Ailes is playing "Cover your ass" with this statement. Beck got booted because his adverisers got yanked, and Sarah shoved her dinglberrys up her teabagging nostrils with the "Blood Libel" speech.
I'll believe it when they get rid of their entire lineup and start from scratch, or have Tucker Carlson on 24/7

But i still won't watch them.

Why are people in a tizzy because Joe has been friends with Roger Ailes for years? This is akin to the charachter assassination by association.

When I was in business, I made friends with some questionable people because they opened doors for me that I otherwise wouldn't have had access nor opportunity. Doesn't mean I agree with their politics. We had to get along to move along, and both sides flourished. Business isn't always pretty, and the same goes for politics.
