Chris Christie will NEVER be the Republican nominee for President in 2012.

Look I am not discriminating against individuals with a weight problem, nor am I saying it is fair that others do.  I am just pointing out that Americans are easily swayed by the visual.

When looking at this picture of these two men, I see one looking energetic and ready to tackle America's problems, and the other looking as if he is one short flight of stairs away from a massive coronary.

Who do YOU think can handle the job?

He would never win primaries, and not because of his girth ("he's just like me!"). He is way too liberal for the right wing - called anti-Muslims crazies, he's for gun control and he believes in scientists. Kiss o death.

I agree, Gryphen. Even though he looks more like the most of us since our society is so grossly overweight, we still are wired to like things of proportionate beauty. It is just a fact of science and although we can reason away the discrimination, we like what we like. It would be a wonderful day when we could tolerate all differences, but hell the other side still has problems with skin color and sexual orientation and are stupid enough to not vote for this man because of his appearance despite the possibility he might walk on water. It is going to be very interesting to watch the blowout. At the end of the day, though, appearances aside, his health and sustainability have to be looked at for the rest of us that have brains.

Yes, physical readiness is definitely a factor.

Who was that early President who was huge?

My point is, this isn't the 19th century where this crap didn't matter, and all that did matter was the toughness of the candidate.

Actually considering some of out past Presidents, it's hard to determine what mattered to Americans back then.

It's unfortunate for Christie, as he isn't a poor choice for leader. BUT I really don't want a future President meeting with diplomats anddrop dead.

I would vote for a candidate who's over 75 but not a candidate who looks like he's one bacon strip away from his grave.

I think when his "liberal" views become widely known he'll fall out of favor with the far right. He may be a big mouth, but he's a NJ republican, not a southern one.

I think the policies, versus appearance should be considered. If he is indeed unhealthy, then his medical conditions should be a concern, but just his size should not. It just lets people criticize how Obama looks.

I always get so mad at Rush when he says Michelle Obama is fat, when she is in such great shape and Rush is not that thin. It doesn't make sense. I hate fat jokes in the media. I hate the way people treat overweight people.

I think this guy has too many things that will come out in vetting process for him to run.

Daily Mail had an article about this... the majority of commenters said they don't care about his weight, it doesn't have any bearing on how he does his job. There were many mentions of Taft. My opinion? They like having someone who "looks like them"... in more ways than one. The CDC says that over 1/3 of Americans over the age of 20 are obese... not overweight- obese.

When I look at this picture, I wonder how Christie has the energy to go about his daily life. I started exercising again when I got winded walking up a flight of stairs- and I was about 130 at 5'2"! I am now following our President and First Lady's examples and getting exercise regularly. Such a great example to have- they have busy lives and can fit it in, the rest of us can find a way, too!

He will drop dead sometime in an 18month slog that is a campaign, if he tries now.

I have no problem saying that obesity makes one unfit for certain jobs.

There is no job more stressful and demanding than the Presidency and one should be in top mental and physical condition whenever possible.

Obesity is not a healthy state, no matter what the cause. Visceral fat is responsible for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, gout, etc.

If it is "glandular", then it signals a severe physical imbalance.

If it due to overeating, to be as fat as Christie, it would belie an emotionally imbalanced or a grossly over-indulgent, out-of-control person.

Any way you look at it, it is not optimum and a disinclination of voters to vote for an obese person has nothing to do with prejudice and everything to do with the reality that is being presented before our eyes.

    An obviously unhealthy person.

I only wish that Palin's lack of mental health was as obvious, but alas, it has taken years to uncover it.

Because Americans have gotten increasingly obese (and we are number one and can do no wrong;)), this unhealthy trend has been increasingly shown as acceptable, but it's not.

It's a health problem and it needs to be fixed.

Being from NJ - I shudder to think what Christie would do to this country on so many levels. He is systemacally destroying NJ every chance he gets.

IF he runs - he is doing so for the money and ONLY the money - he is not stupid (which makes him a bit dangerous) - but I think he knows he can't win; I'm sure they have promised him book deals, tv deals, speaking engagements, etc. that will make him millions - and by running now it opens the door to run again in 2016 (which unfortunately is going to be an even scarier election - who knows who the democrats will have running!)

He needs to be taken down and quickly - he won't have the hard core religious folks thats for sure (he is not a racist, he believes in science) but perhaps his down right nastiness and bullying nature will appeal enough to them to make up for him now being totally crazy - I think meanness and greed may just appeal to these religious nut jobs more then anything to do with their religious convictions.

I wish I had the time and connections to start a blog to reveal the truth about Christies - it would be an honor to follow in your footsteps and bring down a corrupt politician.

I'll do what I can in my neighborhood and donate and volunteer when I can - we need to re-elect President Obama in 2012, and a qualified decent democratic in 2016 too.

As far as the weight issue - I will not judge someone on their weight (I was formerly 308 lbs but after years of struggling now manage to maintain and healthy 135 lbs). I think the racists in this country would prefer some one (any one) over weight to a "black" president - America as a whole has a much higher average weight and a large majority of overweight people - so that it may not be much of a barrier any more (at least for a man - a woman still needs to be "sexy" or at least "nice looking" to get any where publically) - a lot of GOP folks may be able to identify with him (he's just like me, I'd like to hav a beer (and super sized cheeseburger with fries) with that guy).

I have a sinking feeding he will be throwing his hat in the ring - and I just want to pull the covers over my head and make it all go away.

Either a presidential campaign would put Christie in shape or he'd end up so fatigued he'd be forced at some stage to drop out. Campaign schedules are gruelling.

I hope he stays right where he is - a competent governor in NJ.

  16. Anonymous4:58 AM

I have been stumped since the day the GOP had a fetish for Chris Christie. Here is a guy who is more less a fat slob and I am not dissing him because he is a slob but he is a fat slob. Now, the presidency is the most difficult thing a man or woman could tackle and America would never elect a fat man or woman for that stressful role. Never will happen. No one wants to see President Christie's funeral procession on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anonymous5:09 AM

Christie's weight is not appealing, but I could care less about his scale. I care about how bombastic, acidic and disrespectful he is toward his constituents.

He is nasty and brutish and conducts himself like a callous trial lawyer, not a Governor with the dignity and decorum that should come from that office.

I think we've had enough of leaders using their title to abuse the very people that give them power. We've had enough of that especially from first term Governors.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous5:11 AM

He is not pleasant to look at sure, but if he was a good guy on top of a competent leader, I'd encourage his entrance even though he is still serving his first statewide elected term.

But he's a thug, rude and crude and just not suited to this 'serving the people' thing. He belongs in the private sector.

I don't think he's weight will clearly register as a deficit to many voters, but I guarantee that his vp pick would matter, just as McSame's health was an issue, if Christie is the nom, he'd better not pick a novice as his second string.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think another reason that Christie would never be president is he is kind of a jerk. He goes around calling his political opponents in NJ "jerks" and "stupid". That does not sound very presidential.

Besides, while he hates the working man, he does not hate gays or Muslims. That's just not enough hate for a lot of people in the GOP.

His head is as gigantic as his waistline.

Several months ago he was admonished (and had to pay back the state) for taking a state helicopter to his son's baseball game. After he landed, he rode a limo 100 FEET to the field. Another "fiscal conservative" in name only.

As far as his enormous girth, the republicans could give a crap less. Remember they were more than happy to throw their full support behind an elderly cancer patient and his unvetted moronic choice for VP.

The only thing that matters to them is if their candidate is white. Christie is more than qualified in their hypocritical eyes.

  23. Christie should be advised to never take off his jacket in public.

He's been in elected office less than 2 years, less time than Obama was Illinois senator before he announced his Presidential candidacy. (Although @SteveKornacki tweeted yesterday that Woodrow Wilson was governor for less time than Christie has been when he ran for president in 1912.)

Aside from the miserable economy, Obama's biggest challenge is the unwavering perception of him as an anti-colonial Muslim Kenyan socialist, which of course is proven wrong but are dismissed as "lamestream media lies" (gee, I wonder where that thought-process originated?).

What's most disturbing to me are the dog whistle statements that tell the die-hard Republicans that "You're right, Obama is the Anti-Christ." Witness Hank Williams Jr. saying that this summer's so-called golf summit between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner "would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu."

Palin's failed, hate-filled campaign rhetoric gave the green-light to mainstream role models (athletes, country singers, etc.) to perpetuate idiotic myths that bind the rightwing together.

Christie's health is an issue. The job of President is probably one of the most stressful jobs in the world. We have already seen the Christie is an emotional, bombastic guy who reacts before thinking. Imagine the stress to his heart, in addition to carting around 400 pounds.

There is nothing healthy in being morbidly obese. With obesity comes diabetes, heart and kidney problems. His weight is due to over-eating. It is as serious a problem as if we had a heavy drinker in the White House. If he can't control himself (what he eats and how he talks), I don't think that he can represent the United States in meetings with foreign heads of state.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the highest rates of obesity and diabetes go hand in hand with the red state, blue state demographics, with the red state people making bad choices regarding their own health. There is nothing smart in being that overweight. It is unhealthy, and we need someone who is physically and mentally fit for the tough job.

Chris Christie Will Not Seek Presidency, Advisers Confirm

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey has decided not to seek the presidency, according to two sources who were told of his decision.

Mr. Christie is scheduled to announce his decision at a news conference in the state capital at 1 p.m. But two sources said Tuesday morning that the governor will not pursue the Republican nomination.

The decision ends a late flurry of indecision on the part of Mr. Christie, who had been encouraged by a growing number of Republican donors and activists who had hoped he would add his name to the field of candidates vying to challenge President Obama.

The guys not that overweight. Overweight doesn't make you stupid. Overweight increases the odds of certain health conditions, on the other hand overweight people can be quite healthy. Health to some degree is a crap shoot. Heart attacks happen to fit, athletic people, too. Overweight people can and do live to a ripe old age, and frequently have better outcomes with health issues than thin people.

You're right though, Americans are so stupid they would vote for Kim Kardashian before they'd vote for Winston Churchill. Robert Peel, British Prime Minister, one of the greatest statesman of all time, who saved Britain from years of turmoil by doing the right yet hugely unpopular thing with respect to Scotland, in the process sacrificing his career, was such an ugly little man, he could never have won a school board seat in America today.

God save us from our electorate. Reality show beauty contestants with Sarah Palin size intellects is NOT what the founding fathers had in mind.

Health IS an issue and it's quite obvious that no matter what Christie's age, his trip to the hospital his year have removed any chance of him EVER being president , or at least until he has an extreme weight loss. Mr Christie is not just overweight, he is morbidly obese.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous9:00 AM

If I were to vote in the Republican primary and Christie was in the mix, he would not get my vote. First, I suspect he is not healthy due to be horribly over weight. Too much pressure in running a good campaign and he'd likely have a heart attack.

Secondy, he is abusive in his language and I don't appreciate that.

President Obama is physically fit - works out daily - has a kindness about him - and, has the experience of being President of the United States.

I think he will be re elected and he has my vote AGAIN!

I'm very proud that President Obama and Michelle represent us - they are fine, fine Americans. I could not be more proud of both of them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anonymous9:02 AM

Chris Christie needs to concentrate on getting healthy, rather than seeking the presidency. He really has no excuse for being in such bad shape physically. What has caused him to be so obese? Has he had a COMPLETE physical exam with ALL the tests necessary to pinpoint his exact problem? Some people tend to gain weight, but this is 2011, and much research has been done. I don't know if gastric bypass surgery would work, or if he just needs to be on medication, and counseling, and get out and really concentrate on eating healthy and exercising. He has money, and the advantage that it brings to help him conquer obesity - IF he really wants to.

As far as a presidential candidacy, yes, his weight is definitely a concern. Who knows who he would pick as his VP, who could become POTUS if something unfortunate happened to him.

I wish him well, and hope that all of this will now get his attention, and that he will finally be ready to do something positive. Am sure his wife and family are hoping for this, also. Sorry, Christie, this is NOT "your time" to run for the presidency.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If Chris Christie was a woman and was that morbidly obese, she would not even have gotten to be the point of being considered for office of POTUS. Or, I believe Gov.

    Nope.

And this brings us back to that whole Scott McAdams thing, who continues to be morbidly obese. If somebody cannot manage their diet due to an inability to exercise properly OR inability to exercise sound judgement when making food choices OR insufficient concern for themselves or their family OR a mental health issue OR uncontrolled stress THEN they should not aspire to hold national-level elected office. The stakes are too high if, once elected, they succumb to an early death.

BTW, I saw Scott eat a large slice of pizza in three bites a few weeks ago. And I understand he's going to run for Senate again.

  44. Anne In DC11:13 AM

There is no question that Chris Christie is morbidly obese and that his health should be a concern for both him and his family. But his worst problem by far is that he is an abrasive, loud-mouthed bully who would be sure to alienate potential allies he would need for a presidential administration. While I grant that he is not far right enough for the crazies, the fact remains that he has been bad news for New Jersey. That alone should give anyone pause in considering him even for the position of dog catcher.
