It looks like the President made quite a splash in Down Under.

Here is a news report of the trip which features an interview with the little girl you see hugging the President with such glee.

While the President was off impressing the rest of the world, here in America somebody decided to shoot his house.

A 21-year-old Hispanic man was arrested in Pennsylvania on Wednesday in connection with a shooting in which a White House window was struck by a bullet, the US Secret Service said.

Oscar Ortega-Hernandez was arrested by state police at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania, the Secret Service special agent in charge, Edwin Donovan, said.

"On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:35 pm (4.35am AEDT today), based on information generated by Secret Service agents from the Pittsburgh Field Office, Pennsylvania State Police Troop A located and arrested Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania," Donovan said in a statement.

"Ortega-Hernandez is currently in the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police," it said.

Now if this were a Republican in the White House, and I were Fox News, I would start screaming about a liberal plot to kill the President, But since we are on the more rational side of the internet I will assume that this is just an isolated incident by a deranged individual, and NOT a conservative plot.

However I really WOULD like it explained to me how a mentally impaired man was able to get his hands on an AK-47?

I am just thankful that the President and Mrs. Obama were well out of harm's way, while this man was exercising his 2nd Amendment rights.  Isn't THAT how the GOP frames these kinds of episodes? Well at least when they are directed at this President of course.

Quite a sad state of affairs that POTUS enjoys "RockStar" status world-wide except here in the USA where the racist, dummbassed FoxTARDS, say all sort of Vile shit about him and FLOTUS!
Shame on these people! They are not Patriots! They are Hatriots! Haters!
And thanks Sarah Palin, Joe Wilson, John Mccain for opening that DOOR. I wish it would slam shut in their White faces!
They might as well run round with their white sheets on!
And yeah... How was this guy able to get a AK-47??? We need Gun control and Fuck the NRA and Cons! As Sarah would say"we don't want bad guys to get their hands on guns" ummm Children either.

O/T: Gryphen, I know I'm often critical of you and your liberal blog buddies, but now that I need your help, I'm prepared to overlook my past affrontery.

I recently attempted to purchase a case of Newt Gingrich wigs online and accidentally ordered a gross. What I am going to do with 144 Newt Gingrich wigs??

So, I'm thinking maybe you could help me out by taking some of them off my hands.

Obviously, I'm not wearing these tacky wigs. But they make AWESOME car polishing chamois. Surely you could use some of them to polish your own vehicles.

I paid $29.99 per wig and these are HIGH quality spun white fiberglass wigs that look very life-like from as close as 75 feet.

I'm willing to sell them to you and your readers for $39.99 each plus handling and shipping. That's a negligible 30% nominal mark-up that modestly compensates me for the stupidity of the mistake I made. You'll agree it's more than fair.

I urge you to hurry because at this price, these ugly head schmattehs are gonna go fast.

My marketing slogan is: "If it's good enough to perch atop Newt's head, it's good enough to polish your car."

    Thanks for your support.

But weren't the girls and Grandma at the White House? That had to be somewhat disturbing for the President and the First Lady.

  5. Yes, there is this incident and it would also seem that the only time the GOP candidates loudly bash the President, is when he is out of the country.
    Cowards.

It's really time for the 99% to get organized and put these issues into the fore front. It just seems to me that the crazies get more info out to the lazy citizenry. Why don't WE the Dem/Lib/Pro's get our WORD out to the masses. I mean if they are that dense why can't we co-opt their votes somehow?? All it takes is Prop-O-Ganda!! I know we have PLENTY of celebs and even 1%ers on OUR side. We need to do a media blitz and focus on voters who may very well swing to the left if they can understand the issues. KEEP it SIMPLE for the simple folks but also give it some passion. There is a message but it's not getting OUT THERE!!

    Hi I'm back...
I watched the film Tout va Bien and it just kills me that 40+ years later we are actually worse off. How is it the actual corporate/capitalistic interest that people were fighting against then have become more powerful. Why is it that when I was a kid there were lines for gas and we still haven't addressed the energy crisis??
What has happened to common sense and just do the job right?? The message HAS got to go out to the base and I don't want to be disparaging but I'm related to some of the base and they just don't understand the broader concepts they just take everything at face value.
I remember my brother bringing up the "death panels" and I just laughed and said, this is America you can vote. Do you honestly think that's going to happen. And he was real quiet. Maybe light was dawning on marblehead????

The NRA controlled House is about to vote on a bill that supercedes states' rights and make every state accept another state's concealed weapons permits...so some Wyoming gun nut can come into MI and bring his gun into our schools. Do these people ever ever think?

This is exactly right. I would go further though. There really are "death panels" already, administered by insurance companies. If the TP people in Congress have their way, death panels will be expanded.

I will never, ever forget how Australia helped and supported us when 9/11 happened. Seeing this great reception they've given President Obama, and their agreement to be our allies on the world stage does my heart good.

What bothers me is what's happened with this armed lunatic. We need stricter gun laws, dealers can't take the buyer's word that they aren't psychos, straw sales have to stop, and these assault type machine guns should be banned for all but law enforcement.

The states this man had criminal records in should be red flags.

Wonder what "Blunder woman" will have to say about this issue on her next Fox News appearence, since she's all for second amendment remedies?

  11. Love the pics and video from Australia. I watched Obama's speech to Parliament, and thought it was one of his best. Very firm, decisive and visionary/strategic. It's too bad that it will get little/no coverage back here at home, while GOP continue to lie about Obama's "spinelessness." It's enough to make you scream.

The girl who asked POTUS for a hug reminds me of myself at her age, when I met my idol, Sandy Koufax, at a book signing. My mother (rest her soul) would often tell me how obvious it was that I adored him when I got his autograph. And she was right.

  13. Grypen: I will share with you a little story, as your blog so far is the only one to report on The President visit to my country.
When he arrives in Darwin which is notorious for crocodiles. They are going to present him with an insurance policy, that was taken out on his behalf, by a local firm.It states if he is taken by a crocodile while he is there. They will pay his family $50,000 dollars:-)
They reckon no other President will have a gift like this because he is the only President to ever visit there. So your bloggers will know about this before he does. Looking at his security arrangements I think their 50,000 will be safe.
Hope you enjoy this story as much as I do.

Isn't it amazing how the rest of the world gives our President the respect and admiration he deserves. I suspect that those here in our country who spew the hate and racist crap are in a very small minority, but thanks to Faux News they get huge coverage.

I know that history will judge this President as one of the best. He is doing everything he can to get whatever he can done in the face of complete GOP obstructionism. History will judge Boehner, McConnell, Cantor, Walsh, .....all those assholes as the worst Congressmen ever.

    1) So, exactly upon which head was Newt's wig resting?

2)Were these "wigs" treated with old-flame retardant?

Australia I am proud of you.I cannot believe how so many Americans disrespect him.
Sarah Palin' couldn't walk in his shadow she is meaningless compared to him.

  20. Hauksdottir, I thought Beldar used the term Merkin to spoof the way Sarah Palin butchers the word American. Thanks. Now I've gone back and read his post in a whole new light. Kind of funny, with a strong ick factor.

From Australia - it is so very sad that your press does not report all (anything?) that happens with your President outside of the USA. He is honoured,(oz spelling) loved and revered wherever he goes. If you see some of the videos - watch the reactions of all and any that are listening to his speeches.

Today, in particular, his speech to the Australian troops gathered in Darwin covered much of what the US military will be moving towards in the coming years - hard to believe this would not be of interest to the people of the United States. It seems many would rather listen to the nonsensical remarks by a lot of dumb and stupid wanna be important people. The reality is they do not deserve Mr Obama as their President.

I watched his speeches over the 28 hours and was mesmerized - our PM who has not been doing well in the polls has probably gained 10 points during his visit - he surely brings out the best in everyone. I have never before heard her make such heartfelt and intelligent remarks.

There are some people here that think Australia is too committed to US foreign policy and do not like having foreign troops on our land (I tend that way myself) but such issues are not discussed via personal attacks on your President - rather they relate to debates on Government Policy in Australia - and all Political parties - right left and centre have supported the US alliances with Australia for the past 60 years - this is unlikely to change during my lifetime.

    And this:
Lauren Pierce, the president of the College Republicans at UT Austin, said on Twitter Wednesday that the idea of assassinating President Barack Obama was "tempting."

At approximately 2:30 p.m., Pierce posted, "Y'all as tempting as it may be, don't shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we've EVER had! #2012."

The tweet came hours after police arrested a man for firing shots at the White House, leaving two bullets in the executive mansion.

Pierce joked that "it must be a slow news day" after ABC News posted a story on her comment:

Pierce told ABC News that the comment was a "joke" and that the "whole [shooting incident] was stupid." Giggling, she said that an attempted assassination would "only make the situation worse."

"Insofar as she's a representative [of the College Republicans], maybe it shouldn't be said, but she's made a positive statement in a way," said Cassie Wright, the group's vice president.

"I don't really see anything wrong with it," Wright added. "It's just a personal comment, not representative of any group. Just freedom of speech, you know?"

Amid growing attention, Pierce removed the post and apologized on Twitter for her actions.

    From Huffington Post.

It is a federal offense to threaten the President whether or not you are capable of carrying it out. (18 USC section 871) I really hope the Secret Service interviews her and scares the crap out of this smart ass. If she ever wants a security clearance it will be on her record.

How was a mentally impaired man with a criminal record in 3 states able to get such a weapon? Probably at a gun show or maybe just a gun shop. The NRA has been more successful in removing restrictions on convicted felons ability to own firearms than anyone has been at restoring their voting rights.

A lot of us would LOVE to have more international news but our currently pathetic public media doesn't seem to believe it. Fortunately our house gets BBC America so we watch our news on that channel. Edward R. Murrow must be spinning like a turbine engine in his grave.

The video of the reception Mr. Obama received made me very joyful - thank you, Oz!
