Mark Kelly: Gabby was "troubled" by Palin's crosshairs map. On the other side of common decency Fox News claims Diane Sawyer committed "journalistic malpractice" by including reference to Palin and crosshairs map in 20/20 segment.

Courtesy of The Hill:

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was "troubled" by a crosshairs chart that appeared on Sarah Palin's Facebook page, showing the congresswoman a target.

"She was troubled that her district was one of twenty targeted on Sarah Palin's Facebook page and website," Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, writes in their book "Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope."

Kelly recounts that Giffords' told him that "Palin's rhetoric had no place in political discourse." "It sends the wrong messages," he recalls Giffords saying. "It's a dangerous thing to do."

After Giffords' was injured in the Jan. 8th shooting in Tucson, Ariz., Kelly writes that Palin's "rhetoric came quickly into my head." He notes that when President Obama called to express his condolences, "I told him Gabby and I had found Palin's website troubling." He admits he "vented" to Obama about his frustrations and that the president listened to his complaints without "commenting on them directly."

Kelly admits "I don't know if the shooter in Tucson even looked at Sarah Palin's website" but he notes politicians "need to tone it down, speak more respectfully."

He writes that Palin, who was contemplating a presidential bid at the time, never called although he was told by Palin adviser John Coale that "Sarah and her husband, Todd, were 'devastated' by the tragedy."

Palin, at the time, posted a note on her Facebook page: "My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice," she wrote.

But Kelly writes: "I thought Sarah Palin might call to say she wished Gabby well and that she was praying for her and the other victims. We heard from many Republicans offering heart-felt messages. Given that a lot of the discussion in the wake of the shooting had singled out Palin, I expected she might also want to clear the air."

He even imagined what he would say to Palin, writing he planned to "graciously accept her words of consolation" and then add his own thoughts: "'You are not responsible,' I planned to tell Sarah Palin, 'But you are irresponsible.'"

But "she never called," he notes.

Obviously considering how upset Giffords had been about the map, the idea of her husband immediately thinking of it after she was shot makes perfect sense.  And his expectation that Palin would have reached out to his devastatingly injured wife would have been completely appropriate under the circumstances. (Because of course he did not know Palin like we do.)

Therefore having it included in this segment also makes perfect sense. In fact if it had been left out it would have seemed cowardly of Sawyer and the producers of 60 Minutes, and indicated that they had gone out of their way to avoid upsetting the Palin-bots and Teabaggers.

But that is certainly NOT the way that Fox News sees it:

The documentary, which also contained the first public interview with Giffords since the shooting, was ruined by a gratuitous attack on tea party opponents of health care reform and on Sarah Palin toward the end of the one-hour special. A short segment showed Giffords confronting an angry crowd of constituents at a town hall meeting. Palin was shown briefly, as was the infamous cross hairs map.

The segment was shown without context or detail. As Giffords is deservedly a national heroine because of how far she has recovered, the segment gave the clear impression of tea partiers as an angry mob and Sarah Palin as the cause of the shooting.

ABC News and Sawyer committed journalistic malpractice by dredging up the old accusations without also showing evidence that debunked them. Palin and her map had nothing to do with Giffords' shooting, as was implied in the segment. Jared Loughner, Giffords' assailant, was an insane man who likely never heard of Palin and certainly was unaware of the cross hairs map. Yet ABC chose not to mention this.

Really? So illustrating the out of control political rage, and the rhetoric that fanned the flames of that rage which was so pervasive around the time Giffords was shot in the head, is NOT good journalism?  Considering that it was this incident which inspired the President of the United States to call on Americans to " help usher in more civility in our public discourse," how could 20/20 have left it out?

So what do you think, did 20/20 take a cheap shot at Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers or are the folks at Fox just angry that bringing up the rhetoric and Palin's crosshairs map reflects badly on their pathetic brand of  yellow "journalism?"

    "responsible ...irresponsible"

That pretty much sums it up:
Fox News, their army of teabaggers, and especially their teabag queen, Sarah, don't seem to understand the concept of responsibility.

But their statements are incredibly irresponsible.

Yes: Fox News/Sarah Palin's violent "reload" rhetoric was responsible for the climate in which Jared Loughner loaded his pistol that day.

Palin had no business putting crosshairs on a map. As the shooter is insane, (we are told) there is no clear way to say if Palin did or did not influence him. But it is a possibility, and if he did this specifically becasue of Palin, rest assured we will NEVER know.
Palin's hateful rhetoric has consequences. I support Diane Sawyer's journalism in this piece. The fact that the crosshairs bother ed Gabby and Mark, is enough to have it mentioned in the piece. Sarah just has to let the chips fall where they may with this one...sucks for her.

Faux Nooz and the far right have no choice but to carp about anything, anything to distract attention from the laughable parade of charlatans and performers that the Republican party has chosen to represent it in the primaries. Even diehard party members, the ones who are not simply lockstep marchers, look at this field of chowderheads with dismay and resignation. It's kind of amusing, really.

They did not take a cheap shot.

Sarah's nasty rhetoric has had a devastating effect on this country. She thinks name calling and hate are viable alternatives to having a brain or political policy. She
is a bomb thrower--and she was throwing bombs at a time when crazy baggers
were carrying guns and threatening democratic pols.

Kelly was right, Palin was irresponsible. She was an ex-veep candidate and she acted like a street thug. She deserves anything they say about her. She wouldn't back down on the crosshairs bullshit because she was orgasming on the attention. That is why she is dangerous. She behaves like a meth head on a bender—always.

The truth is never a 'cheap shot.' Of course, since Fox lost sight of what is true long ago, they cannot even recognize what real journalism is any more. Nor do they care, as lies sell papers. Palin is no more than a bad joke right now, but her inability to even call the Giffords says more about her judgement, culpability and character than anything Diane Sawyer said.

I think it is the ultimate hypocrisy for Fox News to label any other news network or journalist as having committed "journalistic malpractice" because Fox has built its entire net worth on skewing, fabricating and omitting key facts.

Fox News is a propagandist organ for the far-right, corporatist powers. It doesn't care about building or maintaining an ethical framework. It works to fortify its own power and wealth. Period.

Its primary policy formulators, Murdoch and Ailes, are amoral and proud of it. "Anything for a buck" should be their corporate motto.

That they would malign Sawyer for putting the Tucson tragedy into context is to be expected. They seem to buy into the "best defense is a strong offense" mentality. Unfortunately, they lack the spirit of ethical sportsmanship, of team building in "what's best for Americans" sense.

Fox News is one of the greatest afflictions our nation has suffered in decades. That it has on its consultant employee rolls someone like Sarah Palin conveys their lack of moral worth more than anything else.

That crosshairs map was the first thing that came to mind after this shooting. For Fox to jump to Palin's defense is expected, although misguided. Fox will defend her to the end, which is probably just on the horizon as they figure out how to tell her her contract will not be renewed. Coale is the husband of her dear pal Greta. How can two seemingly intelligent people NOT wake up to the ignorance that is Palin? Sawyer was right to bring this up, since many people would have been upset if it had not been mentioned. Palin's blood libel screech was proof of a guilty conscience as far as I am concerned. Karma will be a bigger bitch than $carah!!

Of course Sarah wouldn't call the Giffords. She was afraid, hearing all the comments swirling around IMMEDIATELY about her and her stupid target map. She was afraid Mark Kelly might say something like "Nice job targeting my wife" (Which we all know mark Kelly has too much class to ever say anything like that.)Sarah is, at her core, a chicken shit loudmouth. Sarah also has not 1 bone of sympathy in her body for anyone...it's all about her. Evidence? Her idiotic "blood libel" jackassian video. That video said more about Sarah Palin than any word salad she's ever vomited out to her minions.

Of course Sarah wouldn't call. The possibility existed that she thought she'd have to say something along the lines of sorry about the target map or show some respect and offer sincere condolences... And that terrified her. Besides how would anyone know it was Sarah. I mean, hell, drugged-out, garbled word salad could be just another crank caller...until the caller would say It's all about ME, SARAH, not your damn injured wife. Classless cow should be Griftitia's middle names.

"So what do you think, did 60 Minutes take a cheap shot at Sarah Palin and the Teabaggers or are the folks at Fox just angry that bringing up the rhetoric and Palin's crosshairs map reflects badly on their pathetic brand of yellow "journalism?" "

Are you kidding? 60 minutes would have been committing "journalistic malpractice" if they HAD NOT included the notorious crosshairs map and its author Palin.

Palin, the irresponsible one, the cowardly one, who did not even have the common decency to phone Mr. & Mrs. Giffords.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if the crosshairs map would have had a "surveyor's crosshairs" over Palin instead of Congresswoman Giffords, she and Fox Schmews would be screaming a much different tune.

Gabby wasn't merely "troubled", she actually went on television and denounced Palin's crosshairs SPECIFICALLY, warning someone could eventually get hurt!

I always thought that was a big part of ahy Palin's "surveyor's marks" were brought up after the shooting. It wasn't the mere "coincidence", but the fact that Gabby had specifically spoken out about it.

And to me, that was what made Palin's craven pretend-president-blood-libel video so onerous. That was $arah's response to someone who had publicly warned her about exactly what happened!

Jared Loughner, Giffords' assailant, was an insane man who likely never heard of Palin and certainly was unaware of the cross hairs map. Yet ABC chose not to mention this."

But Fox doesn't show any evidence that Loughner had never heard of Palin or that he was unaware of the cross hairs map. If he was obsessed with Gabby Giffords, then odds are he saw the replays of Gabby Giffords speaking out against the cross hair maps. And very well saw Palin's snarky, nasty response on her FB page. For all we know, Loughner was a regular at the C4P and on Palin's FB page.

So, who's running FOX news now? Sarah Palin? That whiny item was a page right out of SP's blood libel video. This ploy by fox news is just sick. Sometimes, the visual in a story needs no comment because it's obvious to everyone that the woman, Sarah Palin, and her crosshiars symbols WERE incindiary, hateful, and irresponible, in the least.
The fact that she first allowed the "manhole cover/ surveyors marks" excuse on her facebook page, THEN walked that back and turned the issue to a blood libel against HER is enough proof for me that she was aware just how relevant that post was.

Fox news, as usual, is practicing journalistic malpractice by NOT reporting Sarah's (RAM's) "Excuse" posts while reporting this about Diane Sawyer.

The latest tidbit is Mark Kelly's bringing to light that Boehner never visited Gabby in person, but he did send a small note of sympathy. Can't wait for Fox's "Hannitized" Poutrage.

When an event of this magnitude occurs, Americans drop their party affiliation, and support the victim publicly, to do less is inhumane and cruel.

Gabby posted a video on her Facebook page, saying she misses the people of arizona and can't wait to get well enough to represent them again. What a beautiful soul this woman posesses. To think of helping others while she's recovering is something Sarah would never do.

Would any reasonable person, spouse, parent, child, etc. be upset or even angered at their loved one's name, image or specific job title being put in cross-hairs by anyone?

There is something very fundamentally wrong, very much missing from Sarah Palin if she could not see or did not care about the potential danger and callous irresponsibility of her actions.

The crosshairs, the map, and the amped up rhetoric are part of the narrative. Why should it be ignored? Is it tarnishing Queen Esther's lacquer? What about Palin's highly inappropriate "Blood Libel" speech? Fox News consists of nothing more than a bunch of arrogant dickheads.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It's a ridiculous angle from Fox. Of course the hateful rhetoric that Palin was spewing contributed to the climate of division in this country. She had a megaphone and a platform - you couldn't NOT hear her vile words even if you wanted to.

It's not cause and effect for the Tucson shooting and Mark Kelly is right, Palin was not responsible for the shooting but she is absolutely responsible for stirring up and fomenting violence against elected officials. I agree with Mark Kelly, Palin is and continues to be irresponsible.

Just because a person doesn't like to be called out for their bad behaviour doesn't mean that it is illegitimate to do so. Fox would jump on any opportunity to call out a Democractic politician the first chance they get. So they can bugger off with their "outrage".

OT, but has anybody noticed that the iconic image of Sarah Palin is finally FINALLY no longer featured in the opening montage of "Hardball with Chris Matthews"? (She's been replaced by Mitt Romney.)

Dick Cheney's image was replaced by John Boehner's ages ago. Pelosi and Obama remain as the strongest Dems featured.

I wrote the show after the Giffords shooting, asking them to please take her image off the air. I remember saying images DO matter, especially crosshairs, so please take this dangerous woman out of your theme song montage.

Wonder who finally noticed that she was irrelevant?

    ReplyDelete
  38. If Palin truly thinks her words and actions have no impact why does she expect $100K to spew them?

  39. Sarah dear-

It would be unwise for you to continue to insert yourself in our national political dialogue. Your contributions are both negative and polarizing. Moreover, you will continue to receive more blowback from the real journalists and commenters here in the blogosphere.

But I have some suggestions for ya' Sarah! I know you crave the spotlight-- so:

1- You can make a return trip to those rural villages -like Marshall or Russian Mission. This time, really listen to the people there- learn about their needs and problems. Apologize for your failure to help them when you were the governor.

2- You can tell the truth about Trig -- that you did not birth this child. Then you can use your celebrity to focus on the lives of children with DS. Help all of these children to get the best care and therapies so they can function at a high level and truly enjoy their lives.

3- You can tell the truth about your education -- that you did not graduate from college. This is probably because you have a learning challenge like ADD/ADHD. You can acknowledge your own situation. In this way you can also help others to love themselves no matter what their learning styles are.

When you remove that awful pile of lies that you carry around, your burden will be lightened and you might actually, finally, make a positive contribution.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And another thing.....if Palin would have called the Giffords immediately after the shooting, offering her support and sympathy for what happened to Gabby when the news broke and the media was wondering loudly about the cross-hairs map, this whole thing would have turned into a huge boon for her. She could even have released a statement condemning the attack and condemning the violence against citizens. It would have been a big win for her and would have made her look gracious and mature.

But no. Palin as ALWAYS could not rise above anything. She has to sink to the lowest denominator ALWAYS. She has to engage every fight and push back on every slight, perceived or otherwise. Thus we have the blood libel video. And thank you Fox News for reminding us of exactly how Palin CHOSE TO react to the Tucson shooting.

I would have been very upset had 20/20 not brought that up. I believe that it is the shooting and killing that Sarah's campaign instigated and the damage done as being the single most important reason Sarah is NOT running for President, as the trial soon to start would derail any Presidential ambitions she would have.

I think Sawyer let Palin off easy. Kelly rips Palin in the book and ABC actually kind of glossed over the issue. It sure as hell IS fair game in any interview with Kelly and Giffords, especially when Kelly is so unambiguous as to how he feels about Palin's use of the ad and her classless lack of an apology directly to Giffords.

Kelly was also hard on Boehner for not visiting Giffords after the shooting and Sawyer didn't even touch that.

It would have been terribly wrong to not include Palin. The fact is that Gifford was worried about her targeting, and the potential for violence that Palin stirred up. Even if the shooter had not been influenced by Palin's map (and we have no proof he was), Palin created a climate of hatred and potential violence that had Gifford scared.

Kelly made a great distinction between responsible/irresponsible. Palin had been irresponsible in words and actions. And she really exposed herself as the cowardly narcissist she is in the aftermath to the shooting. Didn't even have the decency to call and express sympathy. How anyone thinks this coward could be trusted in any position of authority is beyond me.

They don't want to get involved in the political process. They hate both political parties, and they are going to sit out the next election, anyway. So why should anyone listen to them? If they hate both parties, and are so tired of choosing between the lesser of two evils, then they should form their own OWS political party. An OWS party probably won't win very many elections, and will do nothing but take votes away from democrats, but its a start, and it's better than just sleeping in a park.

But, all they want to do is camp out in parks, then complain when they get kicked out. They need more weapons in their arsenal than just occupying places. "Let's occupy the Justice Dept.!" "Let's occupy the White House!" "Let's occupy Macy's!" It's getting old. I don't care if they get kicked out. I'm sick of them. Until they actually put in the hard work to change anything, they are irrelevent. They will be a distant memory come November,
2012. Except that they didn't vote.

Sarah Palin, when ever anyone sees Gabby or mentions her name they will also see your ugly soul as the person who put cross hairs on her.

You are marked for life with the events that happened in Tucson just like Todd Palin is marked for life when anyone sees or mentions Shailey Tripp.

    Anon @ 9:42,
Fuck you and the horse you rode it on. The OWS sure as hell HAVE changed things already. The MSM was prepared to dismiss them as a mass of unwashed hippies, but as the movement spread across the country, THAT meme was shelved in favor of actually examining who the protestors were and what it was they were protesting.

Their message was so effective that even the GOP talking baboons refrained from their reflexive attacks on them.

The OWS protestors are an ACTUAL grassroots movement, unlike the Koch sucking teabaggers astroturf movement. As such, they represent a genuine national feeling of discontent toward the cozy relationship between big money and politics. If you hadn't noticed, asshole, politicians from both parties are paying attention. Not too many GOP politicians are blithely dismissing the OWS movement.

You may not approve of their message or of them either, but the OWS protestors have given voice to the outrage that a MAJORITY of this country feels. They already have made a difference and I'll bet that their message WILL shape the direction of the election next year.

Only a willfully ignorant buffoon such as yourself who suckles at the teat of Murdoch and sups on the FauxNews swill would spout such ludimocrosity.

Now, you run along and stick your snout back in the FauxNews trough before you lose your place.

palin didn't take it down and the bitch doubledown on her vitriol.

Rep Giffords and others were killed or maimed. REP GIFFORDS WAS SHOT IN HER HEAD, HER HEAD you insufferable bitch!

palin still didn't take down her map after the shooting.

Considering the full fledged "don't apologize, villainize," approach Sarah took to the incident, you know she realized her part.

In her blood libel attack against those who pointed out the obvious she showed that she owned her guilt. When she left the map up on her site for weeks, she showed that she owned and flaunted her guilt.

Attacking is not the reaction of the innocent descent person in the face of another person's horrible tragedy.

typical whining by the rethugs and poor, poor sarah...boo-hoo...

Palin has consistently shown her lack of character and intelligence. She is an attention whore that thumbed her nose at Gabby's safety with the crosshair map and doesn't want to own up to her poor choice of imagery.

Instead of stepping up with a message of genuine empathy, she showed her "me, me, me" mentality.

The blowback would've faded and if she handled it properly with a heartfelt message, she probably would've gained back a few points.

Instead, being the shark in the water she was drawn to the bloodfest and simply couldn't pass up a chance to make it worse.

I don't think there's any other blog in the universe like this one. Gryphen has relentlessly pursued the truth about this grifter family and has never backed down.

He calls her on the bullshit, lies and trash talking offspring.

We're lucky Gryphen continues to stand up to the palin machine. I think he had a whole lot to do with her finally backing down.

Can't wait to get the ruby slippers out of her nasty hands and give them to Gabby!

All you have to do is search on You Tube "Gabby Giffords Palin" and you get this MSNBC interview WITH GIFFORDS HERSELF BEFORE she was shot!!!! She is talking about the map, how her office was attacked and how Palin needs to accept the consequences of her actions should those actions (the map) insight violence!!!

This is Gabby saying, "palin, if something happens to someone because of this map, you are responsible"

    Enough Said.

  68. I may not have the skills of an FBI psycho-profiler, but my "fourth eye" is telling me that in the darkness of Palin's twisted mind Mark Kelly should have been calling her to apologize for Gabby getting shot and console her for her distress over the "mean things" people were "so unjustly" saying about her. (And you know what - that insensitive bastard never called her.)

Palin's fellow Teabaggers were so distraught over the incident that they introduced legislation that would have allowed the next Loughner to carry his favorite gun on his favorite college campus. It was vetoed by Palin's fellow half-wit prayer warrior Jan Brewer in what I presume must have been an accidental display of sanity. The same Jan Brewer who showed up at the memorial service here in Tucson, ensuring that the event had at least one embarrassing presence, and blamed the shooting incident on the usual Good v. Evil bullshit, completely ignoring that she had already cut $64M from the budget for mental health care. She then returned to Phx and proposed helping thousands more Arizonans get their crazy on by eliminating even more mental health care coverage. Well, O.K., in her defense, I mean it's not like we don't know those people are possessed by evil spirits anyway, right?
