Kentucky church bans interracial marriages, because apparently the Civil Rights Movement was just a phase America went through once.

No marriage for you!
Courtesy of Yahoo News:

A small Kentucky church has chosen to ban marriages and even some worship services for interracial couples. The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, located in Pike County, made the vote in response to a longtime member who is engaged to a man whose birthplace is in Zimbabwe.

Other pastoral leaders in the area were quick to denounce the church's vote. "It's not the spirit of the community in any way, shape or form," Randy Johnson, president of the Pike County Ministerial Association, told the Lexington Herald-Leader.

The small congregation, which usually hosts about 40 members each Sunday, held the vote after longtime member Stella Harville, brought her fiancé Ticha Chikuni to church with her in June. The couple performed a song together at the church in which Chikuni sang "I Surrender All," while Harville played the piano.

Chikuni, 29, who works at Georgetown College, is black--and Harville, who was baptized at the church but is not an active member, is white. Dean Harville, Stella's father, said he was told by the church's former pastor Melvin Thompson that his daughter and her fiancé were not allowed to sing at the church again. However, Thompson recently stepped down and the church's new pastor, Stacy Stepp, said the couple was once again welcome to sing.

Stepp's decision prompted Thompson to put forth a recommendation saying that while all members are welcome at the church, it does not "condone" interracial marriage, and that any interracial couples would not be received as members or allowed to participate in worship services. The only exception? Funerals.

Yeah, yeah I know, It's all Obama's fault!

Hey kids remember back BEFORE we had a black President and racism was something people were supposed to be ashamed about?  Still worth it though.

I just sent Obama another $100.00. Because that is how I deal with racism!

Oh, and you can't come to services, and sing, or attend meetings here in our "church" but if you die, we MIGHT demean ourselves to come to your burial

Electing a black President is riling up the waspy folks in the SOuth and polarizing all the antique bigots even more

I muse sometimes that we should have just let them have their United Jim Crow Christian States of Dixie, and we'd all be better off by now.

Can I ask why Huntsman's daughters are allowed by the public to support their father's campaign and not be subjected to lies and hate by the media and public, yet Sarah's can't bring her family with her on trail, AS ALL CANDIDATES DO?????

Politicians families have joined in campaigning at the local and national level since the beginning. There's no reason to attack and treat the Palins any different.

Look at all the kids who were handed corresponsdent jobs because of their last name.

    HYPOCRITES.

It's time to stop lying about the Palins and slandering them. Like you've said, they don't have to work. But Willow chooses to work at a minimum job she enjoys. Bristol chooses to work her office job. Track chooses to fish and remain out of the spotlight. These are good people you don't know, who have done everything to defend their mother/family against immature, biased attacked. Wouldn't you do the same?

You don't see Alexis Stewart defending anti-Martha sentiment. SHE had somethng viable to complain about. Her childhood was rough for her. The Palins' was not. THAT my foes is the different.

Say what you will about southern racists, you have to admit their unique - and twisted - worldview makes them an endless source of comedy gold.

O/T: Gryphen, can you confirm the rumor that Shelly Bachmann is going to announce a new strategy for her presidential campaign which involves conducting all future public statements in rhyming iambic pentameter couplets set to popular Broadway show tunes? If true, it seems risky yet highly innovative. I have to say I think this could be the breakthrough change that returns her to the top of the GOP leaderboard. And I predict that soon, any of them, all of them, will adopt this public speaking - singing - style. I'm looking forward to it!

Except that Kentucky fought for the north we could rain more abuse on the old CSA - sadly racism in the phony south is just as bad or worse than in the real south.

O/T - GRYPHEN -- if you didn't see it on TV - be sure to watch this link segment of Morning Joe.

Joe Scarborough this morning stepped in it.

The discussion is about why the 'good' people are 'not running for office'.

I'm only at the 8:27 mark of an 18 minute segment online wherein he has just made his second reference, not by name, to it being creepy that someone would move in next door to Palin to 'spy' on her. This thing about technology and being watched 24/7 is causing people not to run. Spying???

But -- to elude to Joe as 'spying' -- hope Joe M. sees the segment!!

What continues to blow me away and re-enforces in my mind the fact of the 'dumbing down of America from the top down' (I mean 'top' not as being intelligent, but as to having a pulpit from where to spew on camera) is all these 'talking heads' that have shows or appear on shows, whether news or talk shows, are clearly void of what is going on outside their own 'bubble'. Gryphen and many of us on this blog have more knowledge and intelligence as to what is going on and we don't have the luxury of 'an hour' employment -- but not just about Palin but all news and world affairs -- than Joe S., Whoopi, Behar, etc. When they appear on a show for an hour or two and that's their day's work -- their heads must retract back up their ass until they sit in front of the next camera.

How many of these candidates pimped their family on a reality show? How many of them used their pull to get their uneducated, talentless teen single mother daughter on a dance show? How about a book contract for Bristol who is almost illiterate. And another stupid reality show? How many of them dragged a baby out front and used him as a political prop?

Chelsea Clinton is HIGHLY educated as is Megan McCain. Huntsman's daughters are witty and probably very well educated too. Do any of Palin's children even have high school diplomas? Not a very good look for a parent.

Unlike others--Palin's family was her political meme. It was a false meme. She never was a great mother or wife. It is all a lie. That is why she is judged and the others are not. Get it?

Speaking of racism, the rights of Americans and McCain:

    http://m.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2011/12/ceding-liberty-to-terror-senate-votes-against-due-process-rights/249388/

"Ceding Liberty to Terror: Senate Votes Against Due-Process Rights Conor Friedersdorf | 11:17 AM ET
The upper chamber granted presidential authority to detain American citizens indefinitely without evidence or trials. As one lawmaker pointed out, this flagrantly defies the Constitution.

Is it lawful for the president to order any American held indefinitely as a terrorist, without formal charges, evidence presented in open court, a trial by jury, or a standard of "guilty beyond a reasonable doubt"? The U.S. Senate had a chance Wednesday to assert that no, a president does not possess that power -- that the United States Constitution guarantees due process.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) urged her colleagues to seize the opportunity. "We as a Congress are being asked, for the first time certainly since I have been in this body, to affirmatively authorize that an American citizen can be picked up and held indefinitely without being charged or tried. That is a very big deal, because in 1971 we passed a law that said you cannot do this. This was after the internment of Japanese-American citizens in World War II," she said. "What we are talking about here is the right of our government, as specifically authorized in a law by Congress, to say that a citizen of the United States can be arrested and essentially held without trial forever."

    Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) agreed.

"If we believe an American citizen is guilty or will be guilty of acts of terrorism, can we detain them indefinitely?" he said. "Can we ignore their constitutional rights and hold them indefinitely, without warning them of their right to remain silent, without advising them of their right to counsel, without giving them the basic protections of our Constitution? I don't believe that should be the standard."

In the end, however, Feinstein and Durbin lost the debate.

The U.S. Senate refused to affirm that American citizens arrested in the United States shouldn't be subject to indefinite military detention on the president's order. Senator Feinstein's amendment to that effect went down in defeat with 55 historic votes against it. Here are the senators who lost, the ones who wanted to protect the rights of U.S. citizens to due process: LOOK AT THE CHART

For the last two years, I've been railing against President Obama's civil-liberties abuses and the Democrats and liberals who are either complicit in them, or at best ignoring his Bush-like policies. What you see above is evidence that the Democratic Party in the Senate is better on civil liberties than the Republicans, only four of whom stood with due process and "innocent until proven guilty." Kudos to Sens. Kirk, Moran, Paul, and Collins for breaking with their party."

Check to see where your Senator voted, folks. Mine voted with the first chart, and one has already sent me a response letter this AM.

  24. I heard an interview with this lady yesterday. Yes, she won't be returning to that church. She is hurt because many of the people who voted against her fiance are people she has known all her life. But... she is blown away but the loving support others in her community have shown. A number of churches have specifically invited them to come worship with them. She indicates the support and acceptance far outweighs what her small church did.

Several people who know the Cain family say Gloria and Herman have even lived in separate residences over the years. “They stayed together for good face. They’re old school where you stay just because. Herman likes to give the appearance of living this holier-than-thou life. But it’s anything but,” says someone close to the family.

6:52 The difference w/Palin and her kids is that she projected herself and them to be something they were not! We in Alaska know Palin too well and she was and has been proven to lie constantly, proven unethical by the Alaska Legislature and has now gone down in Alaska's history as their worse governor. Check the records.

Another example - her son Track was not in combat duty in the war - that has been proven by his military documentation and she kept saying he was!

You need to read two of the books that have been written about Palin...they outline and prove her many, many lies.

  31. The most important take-aways for me:

This is a small church, they don't represent many people. They don't have any real power.

Even in this small congregation, there was disagreement.

Many other churches in the area opposed this racist rule.

The backlash of open-minded folks, far and near, will be a much greater force than the ignorant, negative energy of these few fools.

    Ahem (not that one)

Because the people you mentioned don't use their kids as props, let them live their own lives, go to school, and have their own friends.

Why do we rarely see the Obama girls? Because they're either in School, studying, reading, or helping those less fortunate.

Martha and Alexis have always had a difficult relationship, but when the going gets tough, they put all that aside and stick to each other.

In real life, there are no "perfect, always happy families", Some adults learn to let their children live their own lives after 21, and if they're not part of it, then they did thier job well, because their kid can fend for themselves, make their own way in life, and have good relationships. That should be the goal of every parent. It's ok to let them go, even to make their own mistakes, it shouldn't reflect badly on them.

How many politicians drag their kids with them to almost every event they attend? Why don't we know what Santorums kids look like? Why should we care?

Now take your fiber, drink plenty of water and get some rest.
