Some words of wisdom courtesy of George Clooney

Excellent point.

Even though the Republicans are demonstrating great disappointment in the fact that Romney is clearly going to end up their nominee, you can bet your house that they will turn in a tsunami of support for the chance to beat their nemesis, Barack Obama.

Can the Democrats do the same?

One thing you CANNOT deny about us Democrats: We can snatch defeat from the jaws of success like no others! By God we are awesome at it!!

Wait. What? Yes, it's sad but true. Let's change that.

We are the sane party and unlike the the rethugs don't mind some constructive criticism of our own. Be that as it may, we will be behind our President come Nov 2012. He has kept many promises and unlike the troll who posts here saying he lies, has yet to name one. Cowardly troll, our President tells the truth to the American people and will win re-election. Clooney is good!!!

I had such good luck with my last O/T comment (begging for spinach dip instruction -- and getting it! Thank you, Mr. G.) that I want to try another one: In late Oct 08, Cajun Boy claimed there was a researched and written piece on SP's non-delivery of a baby at MatSu, ABOUT TO BE PUBLISHED (right before the election), but it was not. Surely you know about this, Mr. G. Other AK newsfolk who are in the professional gossip loop must also know about it. Isn't it time to leak that article? Or tell us more about it??

Yes, it will require a concerted effort of the Democrats to drown out the noisy minority and overcome the tricks of the GOPers, not to mention the left-wing pundits . . . but we've done it before.

And let us NEVER forget those dang "dangling chads" in Florida, 2000!

2012 will prove more politically vicious than even $P, so let's get fortified for battle...

  11. It feels good to be on the same wave length with Geo knowing I'll never experience my desired proximity of being snuggled by his side tossing my bed-head hair while trying to find my missing nightie.

My question for the whinier set is just who they think on the right is the answer to their particular gripe if they have become so 'disillusioned' with President Obama's accomplishments to date. The picture should become even more clear when one envisions that alternative as a Romney or a Gingrich presidency. Even a 78 year old Paul who would make a VP choice very interesting AGAIN.

I have printed out numerous articles detailing the President's record and given copies to some of my liberal friends who mostly get their 'news' 30 minutes a day from the networks. It's amazing how many who consider themselves informed aren't. The most frequent comment is 'whoa!' as they had no idea of his many successes but were very familiar with the much louder coverage of his 'failures'.

In a shock announcement Wednesday night, Iowa state senator and Michele Bachmann campaign co-Chair Kent Sorenson declared that he is now supporting Ron Paul for president.

Sorenson made the announcement at a Paul rally with veterans here in Des Moines, telling the crowd: "I believe we're at a turning point in this campaign."

Calling the decision to abandon Bachmann a painful one, Sorenson said he felt obligated to join Paul as the "Republican establishment" tries to undermine his campaign.

"I thought it was my duty to come to his aid, just like he came to my aid during my Senate race, which was a very nasty race," Sorenson said, pledging to go all-out for Paul over the next few days.

    Hear, hear, Mr. Clooney!

Democrats, liberals and progressives really need to start thinking really, really hard about what the gop is going to try to pull off to win against Obama. And then think about who they're probably going to run against him. And then, think REAL hard about who's money they're protecting and who's money is going to back them.

And here's the "trump" (for lack of a better word) card:

THINK ABOUT HOW THINGS WENT THE LAST WE HAD THE GOP PUPPETS DOING THEIR GEPPETTOS' BIDDINGS. For 8 awful years. America's hands are still blistering from the continual mopping up.

Issues are important. But in an election the big picture is paramount.

Did Clooney just fall off the turnip truck? Has he not heard of Will Rogers' observation about Dems? NOTHING has changed since then. Dems have been eating their own for generations. Why the fuck should anybody - Clooney included - suddenly expect lockstep fealty? Because Obama is president? Please explain.

Personally, I don't give a shit because I am a Democrat by convenience, not by any brainless loyalty to a party brand. I am a political pragmatist and realist, not a party hack. I am concerned about social justice, not party loyalty. If a third party suddenly rears its head and is more committed to social justice AND shows an ability to elect people, I'll give the Dems the finger faster than you can say "FUCK YOU!" If the Dems drag their asses on issues of social justice, why should I rally 'round their flag?

I give credit to President Obama when he does well, I just want him to go toe to toe with the GOP more often. When he does so, he generally wins. THAT'S why I don't understand his reluctance to do so more often. I would think that kicking Boehner's orange ass - like he just did regarding the tax withholding extension - would be rather enjoyable and might be something he'd want to do everyday.

I guess I disagree with George Clooney, too. Hey Clooney, get in line. I disagree with many more people than just you.

Too bad for me. I guess I won't be getting that invite to his place on Lago Como in Lombardy.

Shit, I was really counting on that invite.

I love Obama's response to Matt Damon's statement about being disappointed in Obama's performance. Obama said “Well, Matt, I just saw ‘The Adjustment Bureau,’ so . . . right back atcha, buddy.”

The Adjustment Bureau was a really dumb movie - and to think that some people actually believe that God or "The Chairman" would actually cause accidents to harm innocent people simply because he didn't want Matt Damon to be with the woman he wanted to be with, because if he was, he would lose the desire to become President.

Being intelligent enough to understand that not supporting this president with all we've got from now until election day or else risk total disaster for this country is not being in lockstep with anyone. That is not hyperbole, that is the truth of the matter. We cannot afford another Republican in the White House. As much as some like to pretend there isn't a difference between Republicans and Democrats (seriously?), there is.

    Just watched Downfall last night.
Lockstep, a very unfortunately choice of words...and ridiculous.

Love you, George Clooney. (He probably had Matt Damon in mind when he said this stuff. I love Matt, but Matt needs to wake up and smell the coffee. President Obama is just one step on the road to social justice, as he has repeatedly said himself. Let's stop self-sabotaging and start organizing for 2016, instead.)

Some of those professing to be "progressives" who are so disappointed with President Obama probably really like Ralph Nader in 2000 and 2004 and what did that get the country? What George Clooney said was spot on and I hope that Democrats realize that this is a make-or-break election for this country. Off topic but George Clooney's movie "Descendants" is excellent.

Agreed. What have you done to change the discourse or political landscape as of late? It's easy to hurl shite from the sidelines (like the screechy wonder), but do you have a better candidate to address the convoluted issues of this nation (the race card, notwithstanding)?

So, less gas, more ignition would be my suggestion . . . unless, of course, you have a clearer solution.

    Change takes time.

  32. Omomma at 5:21 - you are so right! Not to mention that the President cannot do a lot of things without SOME help from congress. (And it's nice to know that someone I admire as much as Mr G. Clooney is a truly bright man.)

Ahem, with cuts to LIHEAP, it's difficult for me to get totally enthusiastic about President Obama and most other national (from other states) Democrats.

Democrats other than my state's DFL, Democratic-Farmer-Labor, politicians. I like Minnesota's two US Senators and my area's DFL US Congresswoman. Also Minnesota's governor.

While I'll vote for President Obama again, it's more I'll vote for him in some ways only as the tea alternative is way worse. I'm tired of austerity cuts being proposed by other national Democrats, from other states and within POTUS administration.

Pandering mostly to please the tea. Pandering to also please those always important middle class and independent voters. Also to please those still employed and working people.

Oh yeah, middle class and employed, I used to be that at one time. Now I'm a poor person who votes for some other national Democrats who often act more Republican than Democrats with any spine or caring about seniors, the poor, vulnerable and disabled people, the under-employed or unemployed, including the 99'es, the long term forgotten, not counted, unemployed.

Again, I do hope President Obama wins in 2012, yet I also hope he'll care more about most of us now forgotten people at the bottom.

Now I've offended some because I dare to question the views of George Clooney AND President Obama.

What amazes me is that I have only expressed MILD disagreement with Clooney and the president and some folks are absolutely enraged by even THAT infraction.

In all seriousness, why are marching in lockstep formation and the unison singing of laudatory hymns of praise the ONLY acceptable responses to this president? Why is coerced conformity granted an a priori status of superiority, with no discussion or dissent allowed?

THAT sounds more like teabaggery to me.

It should NEVER be acceptable to browbeat people into conformity or - worse yet - silence, simply because they express differing opinions. You may not like them, but I tend to offer up copious amounts of information to buttress my opinions. Like them or not, they are NOT uninformed. I come by them honestly and am just as entitled to express them as anybody else should be free to express their's. It doesn't make me right, but it does GIVE me the right to expression.

I am troubled by the vehemence that some on this forum are quick to hurl if anyone expresses anything other than obsequious, fawning praise toward the president. I fail to see how such a position benefits anybody in the long term.

Healthy debate is ALWAYS preferable to coerced conformity.

PS Mr. Gasman - And don't imply I only accept fawning and obsequiousness re Barack Obama.

My eyes are wide open, and I still am proud of the President and what he has been able to accomplish, limited as it is, with these GOP maniacs doing everything in their power to obstruct and doom him to failure.

  43. Gasman12:20 PM

As to anonymity on this or any other blog, I am fundamentally opposed, though not quite stupid enough to use my own name. Thus, I adopt a consistent nom de plume in order that I might have some consistent identity. When you post only as "Anonymous" it becomes impossible to know whom is writing what. There is no sense of identity or consistency and it is just plain tedious responding to the cloud of Anon posters. Just my 2¢.

I still am rather amazed at how some folks here are threatened by intellectual diversity. I am still waiting for an explanation as to why unquestioning fealty to this president or party - or any other - is EVER a good idea. I have been told in no uncertain terms - without any apparent logic, rational, or factual basis - that I am simply wrong to even give voice to anything but full throated servile fawning over this president.

    Again I ask: why?

I am genuinely curious why my opinion in this matter is so blithely dismissed. I wonder by what power or right some of you feel entitled to wax so condescending and imperious merely because I dare to differ with you?

When the GOP engages in the EXACT same behavior, we decry it. Why is it acceptable here?

Save the snotty comments if you can. I've grown weary of the "attack the messenger" bullshit each time I dare to voice a dissenting opinion. Give me substantive reasons why it is wrong to criticize a politician if I disagree with him, EVEN if it is President Obama.
