Kansas Republican Speaker of the House forwards e-mail praying for death of President Obama. Stay classy Kansas!

Kansas House Speaker, and proud Christian, Mike O'Neal.
Courtesy of the Journal-World:

House Speaker Mike O’Neal, R-Hutchinson, forwarded to fellow Republicans an email that refers to President Barack Obama and a Bible verse that says “Let his days be few and brief.”

But the speaker’s office said Tuesday that the email was referring to the president’s days in office.

The email, which has been posted in various places on the Internet, refers to a bumper sticker that reads “Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8.”

Psalm 109:8 says, “Let his days be few and brief; and let others step forward to replace him.”

The email states: “At last — I can honestly voice a Biblical prayer for our president! Look it up — it is word for word! Let us all bow our heads and pray. Brothers and Sisters, can I get an AMEN? AMEN!!!!!!”

I am always astounded at what low esteem supposedly "Christian" people hold their God.

Not only do they believe that God is sitting around waiting for them to make a request so that HE can jump through their hoop when they snap their fingers, they also seem to believe that he will commit murder on their behalf simply because they want him to.

Is this their God, or their prison bitch?

Personally I would not spend a great deal of time worshiping a deity that could be so easily manipulated, nor one lacking any recognizable moral compass. Remember THIS is from who Christians believe they get the commandments which dictate how they are to live their lives.

How long do we have to wait before Christians, or even members of the Republican party, speak out against this kind of hate speech?  How long?

Update: I apologize, when I posted this I left off part of Psalm 109.8 which was not contained in the e-mail, but which such a good Christian as House Speaker O'Neal must surely know. It went as follows:

9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

10  Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg:
let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

THAT is what is contained in Psalm 109.8, and perhaps that helps to explain my outrage.

So if our President is re-elected, and their candidate loses - then God is not on their side?

I'd rather believe it is the Christians who believe this nonsense that THEY are not on God's side.

What a jackass! I actually have seen that bumper sticker, but I do not own a Bible and figured I didn't want to know. When I see the jerks driving the vehicles,I could surmise that it had to be something like this.

I totally agree, Gryphen...the whole concept of this king of loving, caring "God" is beyond me.

I abhor that Tebow jerk for this reason. We just lost a beautiful little 7 year old girl in this area who suffered a horribly painful cancer death. What kind of "God" would worry about who wins a "game" played by millionaires, but lets a child suffer so?

These so called Republican Christians cherry pick passages out of the Bible and use them to wish death on someone and when challenged, their out is simply to say that they were just quoting the Bible. Truly disgusting.

  19. I will say with some reservation that the headlines you have come out with of late are rather misleading and disturbing...

while I would like to believe them, I can't after reading the posts that follow...

I have been a long time reader of this blog and a sometimes commenter...

Am a leftie for sure and despise what the repugs are doing to our congress...

But I am centrist enough to be appalled by some of your sensational grabs for attention of late...

The headline of this post is a good example...

It's one thing to call them (the repugs) out on their blatant inconsistencies and outright lies, but it's another to twist words to match your view Jesse,

"let his days be few and brief" can be interpreted in more than one or two ways...

Those words are not much different than Mitch McConnell stating his goal in his term is to make President Obama a one term president..

I think you jumped over the frantic edge with this one in particular. Do I like what O neal said? NO... do I LIKE that other rethugs have made similar comments? NO. And I do not like that Democrats, leftists, progressives, whatever you want to call yourself or selves, are twisting words and their possible meanings to make a headline to gain more readership...

The meaning in Oneals email was not ALL that clear or cut and dry... "reading between the lines", ie making an assumption doesn't do "our side" much favor if you aren't spot on, and in this case I'm not convinced that you are.

I don't think Mr Oneal was being positive in any manner, but am not convinced either that he was calling for the death of our president.

Your headline is inflammatory with NOTHING to back it up, quit making us liberals look crazy, republican FOE NEWS crazy.

I generally agree with you but hells bells the comment was ambiguous enough to NOT go all death of Obama over.

Troll haters, quit now, cuz I am
NOT one. Just excercising my freedom of speech in a place that I generally really LIKE, but have an issue with the use of language in the headlines.

I'm just sayin tone down the flaming headlines when ya can't back em up, tends to discredit you.

  22. Psalms is not meant to be read as one sentence out of the whole. This is what it says:

Do not be silent, O God of my praise. 2 For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me, speaking against me with lying tongues. 3 They beset me with words of hate, and attack me without cause. 4 In return for my love they accuse me, even while I make prayer for them. 5 So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love. 6 They say, "Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand on his right. 7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin. 8 May his days be few; may another seize his position. 9 May his children be orphans, and his wife a widow. 10 May his children wander about and beg; may they be driven out of the ruins they inhabit. 11 May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil. 12 May there be no one to do him a kindness, nor anyone to pity his orphaned children. 13 May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation. 14 May the iniquity of his father be remembered before the Lord, and do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out. 15 Let them be before the Lord continually, and may his memory be cut off from the earth. 16 For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted to their death. 17 He loved to curse; let curses come on him. He did not like blessing; may it be far from him. 18 He clothed himself with cursing as his coat, may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones. 19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around himself, like a belt that he wears every day." 20 May that be the reward of my accusers from the Lord, of those who speak evil against my life. 21 But you, O Lord my Lord, act on my behalf for your name's sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me. 22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is pierced within me. 23 I am gone like a shadow at evening; I am shaken off like a locust. 24 My knees are weak through fasting; my body has become gaunt. 25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. 26 Help me, O Lord my God! Save me according to your steadfast love. 27 Let them know that this is your hand; you, O Lord, have done it. 28 Let them curse, but you will bless. Let my assailants be put to shame; may your servant be glad. 29 May my accusers be clothed with dishonor; may they be wrapped in their own shame as in a mantle. 30 With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng. 31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save them from those who would condemn them to death.

If you read the entire thing, you realize that the part(s) used against President Obama are the words of "wicked and deceitful mouths." More nasty cherrypicking by evil fake Christians who indeed speak words with "wicked and deceitful mouths."

Yes, I'll speak out against it, as I have done repeatedly to anyone who will read or listen. It's hate speech, going by the name of "imprecatory prayer," as popularized by Peter J. Peters, (the evangelist/conspiracy nut) and other faux Christians. Sadly, people who used to be recognized as fringe idiots have almost become mainstream, thanks to the GOP.

G.K. Chesterton, the great English writer and philosopher, who converted from the Church of England to Roman Catholicism, made this observation: Christianity has not been tried and found wanting; it has never been tried.

6:03, sad that I know this, but the Steelers were playing the Broncos, and Rush Limbaugh's comment was that he wondered if God would be for Roethlisberger or Tebow. It's actually the one thing Limbaugh has said in the last 20 years (since I've been old enough to know better, in other words!) that I agree with. The worst anyone can say about Tebow is that he's annoying, preachy, maybe naive. This is still far better than Roethlisberger, the accused rapist.

I posted the Limbaugh quote on my FB page after the Broncos won (I live in Colorado). But I added the caveat that it was a football game, not a moral competition, and I think God is concerned with bigger and more important things. The SNL spoof of Tebow, which I thought was borderline offensive, did do a great job pointing out the sad fact that many American so-called Christians pray a lot more about their sports than about world hunger, etc.

And we were taught in my high school that imprecatory prayer (although that term was not used) was absolutely biblical and appropriate. I don't even remember against whom our imprecatory prayers were targeted at that time, but this passage from the Psalms were given as an example. I am trying now to find my way back to Christianity, albeit a more liberal, compassionate form. I'll check out that Christian Left website someone posted.

I do not Claim to be a religious scholar. I am merely a person raised in the Presbyterian church. THat said as a Protestant, I am fed up with the "born again" Christians deciding who is a "Christian" and who is going to hell or not based on personal opinion or the OLD testament.

TO the best of my knowledge the Christian faith is grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ recorded in what is commonly known as the "New Testament". The "Old Testemant" of the Holy Bible is a record of the teachings of the Jewish people PRIOR ro the birth of Christ.

How can a anyone claim to be a "BORN again CHRISTIAN" while advocating religious teachings that PRE DATE the birth of their personal Saviour Jesus Christ?

Just saying, this does not make any sense. And then use the same illogic to advocate racism and murder?

    What would Jesus say?

The "righetous indignation" some Christians are tossing Gyrphen's way for this post is just sickening.
Gryphen didn't send this impecatory prayer in an e-mail, imho, Gryphen is being more virtuous, by far, by not going further. Everytime a post like this goes up, everyone's knee-jerk overreation is voiced from the highest mountaintop.

What "Entitlements" for the poor are people talking about? Dignity can get one only so far, when you're hungry and poor, dignity doesn't feed you. When you have no clothes and it's cold out and you have no home, dignity doesn't do much.
A society is judged by the way it treats the weakest among them. Health Care, Education, Food Stamps, welfare, and social security aren't a hand out, they're a hand up.

I knew which verse had been used the minute I read the headline of this post. For over three years, that "prayer" has surfaced on blogs, on Facebook, on bumper stickers. A preacher in Arizona and a preacher in Texas both preached sermons on it - sermons that supported the "prayer". It's nothing new but it is still very disturbing.

While the "meaning of O'Neal's prayer" may not have been apparent to you, Liz, it was definitely apparent to me. I've gotten too many emails forwarded by "christian" friends that contain a reference to Psalm 109:8. LIZ, I totally respect your opinion, you have every right to express it, but I have to disagree with you that this post takes a sensationalistic view of what this Republican forwarded. Because as Gryphen pointed out, the quotes after the original quoted Psalm absolutely infer the original one is talking about a person's death.

Of course, it's possible he never actually reads the Bible so was totally ignorant of what that quote meant, which would still make him a typical rightwing fake Christian who never cracks open the very book he exorts everyone else to follow.

If you will promise to quit equating me to this Kansas Republican, I promise not to assume you are anything like Sarah.

There is an old hymn that states, "They will know we are Christians by our love." That is how you can tell the true Christians from those who claim the name but do not walk the talk. True Christians are not praying imprecatory prayers or requesting wins in football games or on reality shows. Their prayers relate to healing the sick and providing comfort after disaster. Their prayers are for their leaders to be granted wisdom, not death. Their donations are to food pantries or to help Rwandan orphans, not to political parties. And they try to abide by the words of Jesus: Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Unfortunately, too many people try to recreate God in their own image, with their own petty views of the world. The true nature of God can not be pidgeon-holed in this way, but it doesn't keep them from trying.

  62. This needs to be said again, because it is as important as the actual words used against our President. The phrases the anti-Obama fake Christians are cherry-picking are within the section that is in quotes. That is the section that the prayer says is from "wicked and deceitful mouths..." The fake Christians are so ignorant in their hate that most of them apparently don't realize that they are playing the part of the "wicked and deceitful mouths" instead of the good man asking for the protection and blessing of his Lord. When you see or hear this phrase used against our President, stand up and say to those who use it that they are the wicked and deceitful mouths and are going to fucking hell because of that.

I like the term "christianists" for those who are busy pointing fingers at others for their alleged sins and inciting hatred, war, and bigotry. As opposed to real Christians (and there are many) who actually, you know, feed the hungry, care for the sick, comfort the dying, clothe the naked, etc.

"Not all those who say Lord, Lord, shall enter the kingdom, but only those who do the will of My Father."

I am going to be sure to use the term more often.

This makes me sick to my stomach!

The Republican party is a sick, sick monster in the United States of America! I fear we are going to end up with mass harm being done within and to our population - by each other!

I also worry for our President and his family. President Obama is doing one hell of a good job in spite of the Republicans/obstructionists. He will have my vote AGAIN.

Anon 3:15. Romney's words are taken out of context. He clarified in the next sentence what he meant. Using the sound bite is political games 101.

If they specified psalm 109.8 isn't that limited to the 8th verse and not 9 and ten you included? My bible skills are rusty so I may be wrong.

I love God, and I am a follower of Jesus' teachings.
And I abhor these hatemongers, like this preacher, and Palin.

I live in Fl. and this just came up on facebook. I hope God forgives you sir. You should be fired! Your kind of hateful thinking is why this country can't move forward with tolerance. Shame on you.
