Let's clear up a few lies about our President shall we?

Jonathon Alter from the Washington Post has taken it upon himself to clear up five persistent myths about President Obama:

1. President Obama is a Socialist.

Conservatives have echoed the charge throughout Obama’s presidency. Writing in Commentary magazine in 2010, Jonah Goldberg accused him of aiming to “nationalize” two auto companies, stage a “partial government takeover” of health care and seize “managerial control” of Wall Street.

But none of this is true. By temporarily putting major banks under government control, the TARP bailout contained socialist elements — but that didn’t make Obama any more of a socialist than then-President George W. Bush and Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, who launched the rescue. Obama rejected nationalizing banks and made it clear that he had no interest in running the auto companies receiving TARP money.

The president’s health-care overhaul keeps health insurance in private hands, adopts the “individual mandate” concept from the conservative Heritage Foundation, and is modeled in part on former governor Mitt Romney’s Massachusetts reform — not exactly a “Bolshevik plot,” as Obama put it.

2. Obama is a tool of Wall Street.

It’s true that the president bailed out banks and let their executives resume making millions without using the leverage he had in early 2009 to restructure financial institutions and hold them accountable for wrecking the economy. He also hired Clinton-era retreads such as Timothy Geithner and Larry Summers, despite their roles in the 1990s deregulatory policiesthat helped create the crisis.

However, there’s no evidence that the president did these things because he was beholden to Wall Street. Obama genuinely believed that closing banks would worsen the crisis and cost as much as $1 trillion in further bailouts. Time has proved Geithner’s “stress tests” to be smart policy; they stabilized banks and allowed almost all of the TARP money to be repaid. In the meantime, Obama fought for a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, pushed the “Buffett rule” to prevent fund managers and other top earners from paying lower tax rates than ordinary Americans, and backed a 5 percent tax surcharge on millionaires.

3. Obama is an effective public speaker. Obama’s lofty speeches during the 2008 campaign led even his detractors to admit that he is a gifted orator. Some right-wing critics try to minimize his skill by saying he relies excessively on a teleprompter — a ridiculous charge considering that he often writes big chunks of his speeches and often speaks off-the-cuff.

That said, there are few examples of Obama’s speeches actually moving popular opinion. That’s because he speaks in impressive paragraphs, not memorable sentences. He is allergic to sound bites, and that keeps him from effectively framing his goals and achievements.

4. Obama’s stimulus package failed.

This has become a GOP talking point, repeated by everyone from John Boehner to Karl Rove to Romney. It isn’t true.

Objecting to various provisions of the stimulus or believing that it worsened the deficit isn’t the same as deeming it a failure. When the Obama administration was little more than a year old, three of the best-known economic research firms — IHS Global Insight, Macroeconomic Advisers and Moody’s Economy — all said the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which almost every Republican in Congress opposed, would create more than 2.5 million jobs. And last August, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that the stimulus package created between 1.4 and 4 million jobs. Even Mark Zandi, one of McCain’s top economic advisers in 2008, has called the stimulus “a significant benefit to the economy’s performance.”

5. Obama is a weak leader.

Huh? Whatever one thinks of the Affordable Care Act, it hardly reflects a lack of leadership. (That’s like saying the Iraq war shows that Bush wasn’t a leader.) Leading in the wrong direction shouldn’t be confused with not leading. In truth, Obama has often been a bold, risk-taking president, rolling the dice on health care and launching the attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound, in both cases over the objections of some advisers. He didn’t back Simpson-Bowles — for political reasons — but neither did Romney or other Republicans who reject the commission’s recommended tax increases. Are they weak leaders, too?

There is more depth on this article if you want to click the link at the top. But I think you get the gist.

There are of course more ridiculous charges, including that he is a secret Muslim, that he was not born in this country, and that he did not write his own books, but I assume that Alter felt those were simply too crazy to address.

And I have to agree with that assessment.

Of course some of these lies are the very ones that Sarah Palin, with her phantom journalist degree, is frustrated that the MSM will not investigate.

What do we call a journalist that calls it like she see's it without verifying it with facts?

BTW, that little auto industry bailout thing Obama did - the one that saved GM from bankruptcy and saved hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs - has also enabled GM to regain its market position as the world's number one automaker, topping Toyota in worldwide sales for the first time since 2007.

This would be the same GM Romney says should have been allowed to fail. Why do Republicans hate America?

  4. If you read the comments on the Wash Post article, the election in November is going to be a hard win for Obama.

    Epistemic closure is a bitch.

S you "clear up" "lies" about democrats (which really means ignore the real truth, yet continue to spread false stories and hateful propaganda against opponents?

No wonder people have no faith in ANYONE.

If I recall the bank bailout occurred before the 2008 elections. President Obama, as a senator, voted for it but did not support the original Bush proposal which would have made the Treasury Secretary some kind of bank czar with total power, thus keeping Congress completely out of the picture.

I think President Obama has done a great job with little or no media support. As one commenter mentioned, when he saved the US auto companies he saved the US economy. We should not forget that. And we should not forget that Romney was against helping the US automakers. And his dad was president of American Motors, many years ago helping to make the fortune that Romney keeps forgetting about.

Obama is a muslin, and he spent twenty years in a Christian church that bad-mouths white folks, also too.

Obama is weak on terrorism and only killed twenty al-qaeda leaders and bin Ladin because Bush wore that flight suit under the "Mission Accomplished" banner.

Obama is a weak leader that forced Obamacare on everyone even though nobody likes it except for good parts.

Obama is a socialist and proved it by saving GM and you can tell because everybody that works there gets their checks from the government.

Obama is weak on the economy and you can tell because for the last six months that Bush was in office we were losing 750,000 jobs a month and that continued for the first two months that Obama was in office, too.

Obama's stimulus package was socialism except for the part of it that was tax cuts and I guess that was quite a bit of it but still... socialist.

Obama's a communist because I heard Victoria Jackson say so and I think she's really cute - but not as cute as Sarah Palin.

And he's a Kenyan too. I don't believe those birth certificates - anybody can fake one of those. Same with all the photographs from his youth. Fake fake fake.

And Michelle has a big butt.

    So there.

Because we need to restore honesty and family values back into the White House.

  8. The ones who need to read this, won't. The right-wing propaganda machine has successfully convinced the low information types to vote against their own best interests and they now have a bad habit they just can't break. There may be a few in the flock who will be educated by the negative traits demonstrated in the debates by Newt, Romney and Santorum but their 'learned' hatred of the President runs very deep. What can be expected from a group of voters who were more than willing to hitch their star to the likes of empty vessels as Palin and Bachmann. If they were able to stomach the vacuous bleating of these dimwits, a little adultery and immoral tax avoidance shouldn't deter them.

What's even more galling is watching the GOP candidates launch their very public vicious attacks against each other and then blaming their own dirty attacks on Obama and liberals. It's as tho they have convinced themselves the left is as stupid as their base.

Barbara: the one thing we can say about CONs is that they spend a lot of time on the Internet. Mention Obama in a positive light anywhere, and you're going to be slammed by nasty conservatives...don't you fret, though. Obama will win. Pretty much guaranteed. Because:

a: The Republicans are boxed in and are facing a choice between someone who their base hates but who might be able to win some independents, according to pundits (I disagree...but that's another issue...) and a guy who will energize the base...and get no other votes, not a single one from a non-GOPer...because, well, he's pretty much universally hated. That means, pretty much, Obama can't fail.

    b. Obama's approvals are sort meh, but he's miles ahead of Newtie and Mittens...

    c. The American people PREFER Obama's policies to the policies of Newtie and Mittens.

    d. No Hispanic in their right mind will vote for Mittens, considering that he's pretttttty much going to set the racial profile police on them.

    e. Obama hasn't started campaigning. The dude beat a Clinton...Don't underestimate him.

    f. Obama is waaaaay more likable than either of these chuckle heads. Watch the video of Obama singing, then watch the video of Mittens singing happy birthday to Nikki Haley...Yeah...

    g. Mittens and Newtie both have a loooong track record of saying dumb sh!t. and that WILL come back bite them...

    h. Ron Paul has been doing well...Ron Paul will probably want some attention from the GOP...Ron Paul will probably not get it...Ron Paul will probably run as an independent or as a Libertarian. And....even if he doesn't, those voters...yeah, they're not voting for Mittens OR Newtie...they probably won't vote for Obama either...they'll just stay home. And that's a pretty big chunk of your primary voters sitting at home on election night...

Happy? You should be? It's a beautiful day to be a Democrat...

Since we're setting the record straight today, this is also critical:

Setting The Record Straight: Correcting The GOP Lies About Obama’s Oil Record

So let’s look at Obama’s record on oil rigs and leases according to the Bureau of Land Management,

Here is the bureau of land management stats on NEW LEASES for drilling on federal land. In 2011, 2,188 new leases were given out by Obama. In comparison, George Bush gave out only 2,022 in 2003. While the numbers do not mean much to me because leases increase and decrease due to the price of a barrel of oil. When prices increase, oil companies want to drill, when prices decrease, it is not as profitable and they do not want to drill.

In 2002 the average price of a barrel was $25 by 2006 oil was at $79 dollars, a record high at the time. You can see how it correlates to new leases in the link above, as prices increased so did the amount of leases.

The number of NEW wells in 2011 was 3,260, while under the Bush in 2003 only 2,957 new wells were drilled. As you can see the numbers DO NOT show a radical change in anything.

And finally to put the final nail in the coffin of the lies coming from the GOP is the number of permits given out.

Under the Obama administration, there have been 4,244 permits given out for onshore drilling on federal land in 2011. In contrast, President Bush, the oil man, gave out ONLY 3,802 permits in 2003. It then SPIKED to over 5,000 due to oil prices.Aamazingly, new permits in Obama’s first 3 years were all over 4,000.

This shows how lies regarding President Obama’s record is being falsely promoted by the party whose leader said, our only goal is to defeat Obama. This means even lying about Obama’s record and making him seem extreme. Unfortunately for them, the real record tells a different story.

The Republicans have their talking points about Obama and they are going to continue to state them as facts, with the help of right wing conservative media and Fox News.

The old Republican saying is that if you continue to say something long enough that people will believe it.

And bless her little heart, Haley tells the truth for once...just like John McCain did the other day.

    ---

Members of the crowd cheered and the yelled their support for the former Massachusetts governor, even when Haley stumbled in her speech calling him Barack Obama.

"This current president wants to weaken our military and President Obama wants to strengthen our military and will never apologize for it," Haley said. It was then she realized she had said the wrong name.

"Oh, no. McCain did that two weeks ago, and, I just turned 40 today," she said.

    Randall -
Love it but, sadly, there are those who think that everything you wrote makes total sense and is absolutely true, no matter how hard it is to reconcile complete contradictions. And, although you spelled 'Muslin' correctly, I do believe that you spelled 'soshalist' wrong. ;)

Thanks for this. But: This needs to be "cleared up" every couple of days from now till 2012 election and beyond. Once is not going to do it. Needs to be repeated and repeated. Democrats are good at thinking all they have to do is say it once. Republicans repeat their lies over and over. This is not a criticism of you but just an encouragement to keep it up. And thank you again!

Great Article, A lot of people underestimate the effect the infrastructure stimulus had on jobs, public safety, and local economies. Doing these projects now saves the taxpayer's dollars in the long haul.
