Eastwood says Chrysler ad was not in support of Obama, and that it was "just about job growth and the spirit of America."

If any Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it."
As expected the conservatives were up in arms over the Eastwood ad and so an O'Reilly producer contacted him to get his side of the story:

"I just want to say that the spin stops with you guys, and there is no spin in that ad. On this I am certain.

l am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it. I thought the spirit was OK.

I am not supporting any politician at this time.

Chrysler to their credit didn’t even have cars in the ad.

Anything they gave me for it went for charity.

If any Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it."

Okay I buy that, but I think it STILL came off as supporting Obama's bailout of the auto industry.

And I am not alone, apparently Turdblossom feels the same way:

"I was, frankly, offended by it," Rove said on Fox News Monday. "I'm a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, I thought it was an extremely well-done ad, but it is a sign of what happens when you have Chicago-style politics, and the President of the United States and his political minions are, in essence, using our tax dollars to buy corporate advertising and the best-wishes of the management which is benefited by getting a bunch of our money that they'll never pay back."

Seriously? The REPUBLICANS are upset that there might be a little quid pro quo between Chrysler and the Obama administration? Aren't they the ones who invented selling influence to big businesses?

After all what are those 4 billion dollars in subsidies to the oil companies, which the Republicans fight tooth and nail to retain, if not an insurance policy that the big energy companies will continue to finance the GOP reelection campaigns?

Okay so MAYBE Eastwood did not make a pro-Obama commercial. But you know what? It was close enough for me.

  2. Boy, those Repugs don't want the truth to get out, do they? Can't give the people hope and give a shout out to the American spirit and the concept of everyone working together. No, we can't have that! It would destroy their message of despair.

The Republicans are afraid that there might be just a tiny bit of success of some kind anywhere which might be credited to the President. If that happens their dastardly plan to destroy America and blame it on Barack Hussein Obama will have FAILED.

Okay, here's the thing, if GM was doing great and selling so many cars, then why did this ad have to happen? Why did they spend many hundreds of millions of dollars on ads during the SuperBowl? We bailed them out, they made 4 commercials to be shown during this game; at a cost of $2.7 million per thirty seconds. They spent upwards of 20 million bucks for their ads. A company that was bailed out (and yes mostly paid us back) spending that kind of money on ads seems like there might be a deeper problem and we might be asked to give them a leg up once again.

I see them perhaps struggling, even in the face of the bailout. I see Detroit as a harbinger of overpriced American goods that can't keep up with foreign competition.

A world economy is the only solution, one that does not pit country against country. We all need to ability to purchase the highest quality merchandise we can can afford and if GM can't cut the mustard then it's too bad. I really hope that America doesn't have to foot the bill for these commercials.

@3:29 The ad was in support of Chrysler, not GM. Although GM seems to be doing very well, and I believe, has paid back the bulk of its loan from the government. And, has managed to employ several thousand workers, not just at its plants, but in the manufacturing industry which supplies GM with products such as foam, steel, electronics etc.

Regardless of whether or not Eastwood did the ad knowing that it might be perceived as helping the President with his message, I doubt very much that he wants anything to do with today's version of the GOP.

The ad itself is politically innocuous. The reason behind the pro-Obama interpretation is that it's message flies in the face of the narrative that is currently being driven by the GOP - that the United States is failing.

So basically in today's political climate, it is anti-Republican (and pro-Obama) to state that the United States is still a great nation, and that things are getting better. This fact lays bare the desire of the GOP to drive this country into the ditch on Obama's watch.

It disgusts me as an American that they are willing to allow the country to fail in order to win a political contest.

To 3:29: GM is now the biggest car seller in China, and China has tens of millions of potential car buyers. It is the favorite luxury model among all luxury cars sold there. I think most Americans are ignorant of how popular American cars are in other countries and the degree to which the quality of Japanese cars has deteriorated over the past few years. If we can compete in China, we can compete elsewhere. The Super Bowl was the best single opportunity for any American car manufacturer to get the message out there that, 'yes, we can' (compete).

    http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2012/01/buick-excelle-is-chinas-best-selling-car-in-2011.html

IMO, the animus against the auto industry was really nothing more than an anti-union effort wearing a different garb. After all, none of the squealers against helping GM or Chrysler were saying a word about bailing out the banks – even though GM and Chrysler created jobs and the banks, by destroying the housing market and crashing the stock market, actually destroyed jobs. Different rules once again, for the very rich and for all the rest of us.

3:29 pm. Had the US auto industry collapsed, this country would have suffered an economic depression from which it might never have recovered. The auto industry is not just the Big Three, it's auto suppliers all over the country. It's every big box store and every supermarket where people whose work, one way or another, depends on income from every segment of the auto industry. I'm from Michigan and I've seen the devastation that 8 years of Bush economics did to the auto industry before President Obama took office in January 2009. Our son's house value plummeted by 1/3.

Remember back during the oil crisis of the first Bush Administration when the Republicans pushed a bill to give a tax credit to people buying Hummers (gas guzzlers) for their businesses? What President Obama did made good economic sense and saved this country. Now it's up to GM and Chrysler to produce products that are worthy of our trust. I think that they can.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Eastwood has said he is 'not a fan' of Obama. I take him at his word that this was meant as a pick-me-up for the country and not a political ad, per se. I think the irony that Republicans were so instantaneously offended by a pro-American middle class worker ad, though, is rich indeed.

The republicans, with Rove now as their spokesperson, are offended by any popular person saying publicly that we should work together as a nation. Their offense, coupled with their bullying to enforce it, is an admission by conduct that they do not believe in working together with anyone, ever, on any constructive project, but only in yapping on the sidelines with ongoing negativity, and playing 'I'm better than you'. That republicans now view what used to be called civic duty and cooperation in a negative light shows just how far the GOP has fallen. Rove's school-yard level of response made the whole situation look even worse for republicans than it did originally. Once again, the republicans see boogeymen where none are present, thus making themselves looking all the more paranoid and delusional – and proving by their own conduct the correctness of their opponents' view/position.

  37. LORDY LORDY I NEED A 40!

Just watched Baldy on Greta "VanCrookedFace" and the woman looks half dead! WAAAAY to much eye makeup on....she looked like a RACOON! I guess Beefalo is on strike...because Baldy was wearing her straight wig with the bangs in her face...but the ends were chopped off and you could see two different colors!

I can't figure out WTF she was wearing...it looked like she got her jacket from the Janet Jackson "Rhythm Nation" Collection! It was some kind of vomit green and it had the military buttons, with boxy shoulder pads...but since Baldy probably weighs a buck oh five and she has that lollipop head thing going on (big head, stick body) she looked like a little kid wearing her mama's clothes!

Her Manny Tranny face is getting worse! She's doing so much Meth/Crack/Redbulls(??) that all that weight loss is making her NOSE look HUGE! She's going to need another nose job soon!

Hopefully when she gets her nose fixed they'll take some fat from her head and make her a top lip!

Oh and her smile was on the frizz again...but the maniacal smile did make an appearance when Greta brought up President Obama and she started wiggling in her chair in excitement while bashing the President!

She had the flames of hell going in the background and she's replaced that other raggedy vase with a new one...it's red and had some dried up looking fake twigs and flowers sprouting out of it...the flag was peeping out like it was afraid it would catch on fire if it got to close to Baldy...she looked like she has dragon breath!

The interview was less than 10 minutes and Greta didn't look pleased! At one point I did think the camera would pull back and we would see Roger Ailes standing there wheezing and holding up a pistol to Greta's head because her mouth was even more twisted than usual!

At the end of the interview Greta mentioned that Baldy would be giving the Keynote screech at CPAC and Baldy looked like she was going to throw up...but then Greta hurried up and ended it by thanking her...so she didn't have to respond!

If you're wondering why I haven't mentioned what she actually said in the interview...it's because she said the same damn shit she said last week and the week before that and so on and so forth!

One more thing...Beefalo, Wallow, and RAM...ya'll need to do an intervention! Baldy does not look good! She looks like Demi Moore....before she went to REHAB!

I think Eastwood did this commercial because he made a lot of auto industry friends when he made "Gran Torino" and a lot of feelings are being hurt over the renewed GOP attacks on the bailout. Residents of Detroit and environs are starting to feel better about their circumstances, and last year's Chrysler ad pumped up so many Detroit and Michigan natives it's not even funny. So I don't think Eastwood intended this as political, exactly, more as a love note to the American dream that the Big Three played such a big part in making come true and hopefully will be able to again.
