Welcome to the newest thing that is driving the Right Wing batshit crazy at Bill Maher.

This was a video segment featured on last Friday's "Real Time with Bill Maher."

It was filmed by Alexandra Pelosi (Yes the daughter of THAT Pelosi!), who swears she did not TRY to find toothless idiots in Mississippi, she simply couldn't avoid them:

Filmmaker (and daughter of former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi) Alexandra Pelosi traveled to Mississippi at the behest of Real Time with Bill Maher to film voters and get their opinions of the 2012 Republican primary. Before showing the footage, Maher explained to the audience and his panel of guests that the people in the video were not “cherry-picked” and that the intent of the video was not to make fun of anyone.

Of course that pledge not to make fun of them did not last long. Since then many on the Right Wing, have been up in arms that Pelosi and Maher had the audacity to show the average dimwitted supporter of the Republican party in such an unfortunate light. (In other words, with the lights on.)

So what was Pelosi to do, spend days driving around Mississippi looking for somebody with as full set of teeth who didn't sound like an extra from the movie "Deliverance?" Who has that kind of time?

Personally I found the video inspiring. For instance it has inspired me to NEVER go to Mississippi for any reason.

(If you are currently living in Mississippi, with a full set of teeth and more than two brain cells to rub together, I offer my sincerest apologies for lumping you together with the delightful specimens in the above video. If you still feel the need to express your displeasure please remember that "asshole" is spelled with two S's and one "hole.")

I was friends with a public school vocal teacher who started her career in Alabama. She was stunned at the lack of education of the parents of her students and said something to her principal. He explained, "Look, these people are unedcuated. They marry other uneducated people, and have uneducated kids who repeat the cycle. You can't save them all." (In truth, he used the word "stupid," but I was trying to be nice.) And if this is what Democrats are up against, it is indeed a miracle that Obama won!!! Keep them coming, God! (Miracles, that is...and while you're at it, can you do something about these ridiculous people?)

Shall we list the thousands of right wing/Republican/conservative hate messages directed at John McCain, Meghan McCain, Karl Rove, George Bush, even Ann Coulter -- not to mention the really ugly slurs aimed at our First Family?

BTW, the attacks from you know-nothings that have continued toward Sandra Fluke have given us "permission" to continue to point out Sarah Palin's many faults. Half of these people have no idea who she is because an inordinate amount of them don't know their ass from a whole in the ground.

My parents grew up poor in Alabama. But their parents wanted what was best for them. Poverty doesn't mean ignorance--but it does for these souls. This kind of thing should be shown, just like poverty pockets in Detroit and other cities should be laid open.

There needs to be a conversation. Conservatives hate this because their whine has always been that blacks and hispanics only live like this. Believe me--there is equal opportunity ignorance in this country.

As a lover of Southern Gothic literature I have read practically all of Faulkner (and visited his house which is now a museum). I feel that he had a great love and respect for his fell natives.

The genre represents realism which some people confuse for hatred or disrespect.

I have been told by a couple of people that Tennessee Williams "hated" women by the way he writes about them. This couldn't be further from the truth because Williams honored and respected women enough to give his female characters full range of emotions and life experiences.

OMG. Tennessee Williams didn't hate women. As a gay man, he identified with women! He may have had issues with his Christian mom as a gay male youth. Anyway, I met Tennessee Williams in the 70's and he was sure nice to me.

You're a patriot if you don't like that Barack Hussein guy, don't want healthcare, want no government (well, except in the case of women's issues and welfare for yourself) and own an armory if only one or two guns would suffice. A low IQ helps to enhance the happy, deluded shell of "patriotism" that surrounds you, especially when you're spoon fed misinformation from the babbling yap of The Palin.

    7. Why are none of the trolls speaking about Shailey Tripp's book, Boys Will Be Boys?(thanks for the book's title, Sarah)

Could their silence indicate that they know the contents of the book are all true and there is written proof to back them up? Or are you all wondering why Sarah & Todd aren't screaming about this book like they did Game Change? Everything in Game Change was real but Sarah's staff was paid to dispute that by saying they were there. They weren't with her 24/7 and they certainly have reason to lie for her just because she signs their paychecks. They know what happened during the campaign and by working with Sarah this long, they've seen her compulsive lying but the money is good, so they stick with her.

Why hasn't Sarah & Todd told their attorney to start a lawsuit against Shailey? Because neither one of them could withstand getting onto a witness stand in a courtroom and having to tell the truth.

Sarah has a lot more to worry about than Game Change but she has kept the focus on the movie simply to keep everyone's eye off of Shailey's book. It won't work, Sarah. We're not as lazy as you and will not stop working to see Todd's ass in jail for his prostitution ring. Your flying monkeys don't mention the book because they can't fight the truth. You're going down, sooner or later, and the longer you try to remain relevant, the faster it will happen. Keep it up, Sarah, you are your own worst enemy.

Having lived in Mississippi I see Pelosi's film as factual. The poverty in that state is grinding, stunning and like those in the film, far too many accept it. Religion allows many to ignore their own plight. You heard it in the film, they would rather starve than compromise their supposed moral beliefs. The education system in that state is appalling as is the job market and as seen without jobs with insurance/health care no teeth and that's just the things you can see. Many work for themselves so they have no care but they are the first at the emergency room. It's just so depressing.

There are good people in MS but they have no power. It's a state still living by the rules of the confederacy. Even the poorest, uneducated white person ranks higher than the many African Americans that reside there. Sad, truly sad.

I saw it first hand doing clean up from the Tornado that caused untold destruction last April 27th. The one family I'll never forget had their mobile home destroyed. There was a set of grandparents, mother, father, and a daughter in her late teens. All were obese, grandmother and her daughter had to use those motorized chairs to get around. The youngest girl was "pre-diabetic" while the rest of the family all had full fledged diabetes. They all smoked non-stop the time I worked at the site. I don't think any of them worked as they talked about receiving disability payments and Social Security.

While I like Ms. Pelosi I cringed when I saw this video on RT last week.

I can't help but feel that she didn't do a good job of finding a well rounded mix of people to interview.

As a native of New Orleans I have many relatives on the Gulf Coast of Miss, and our two areas share many things - culture, history and people.
I immediately thought that she was in the northern part of the state by the way the people talked. Not that this matters but again, she clearly did not travel more than a couple of blocks to find any other people to interview.

It is a fun past time of all of us to mock and make fun of imagined or real concepts of how people live in different states, but in reality those people in that clip could be found in any state in our union.

Question....if and when these people vote, does their ballot have pictures on it? I seriously doubt that they could read one. Talk about "hanging chads"! I'm sure every state has people like the ones in the video. MS is notorious for this problem. You heard him say, it's the Bible Belt. God and Guns. Racism. It's easy for them to interchange Blacks and Muslims in their speech. They think President Obama is both! It's like a race to the bottom of the heap for them. Anything they can do we can do better. Hatred seems to be a Code of Armour for them. How depressing it must be. It has to be Obama's fault for their situation as he is black and Muslim and is taking away their rights. God is taking sides against them and the "Haley Barbour's" planted the seed. I'm sure their life was much better when Bush was in office!

It's like that in FL too. The coastal areas and Orlando have the tourists. The rest of the state are hard working migrants and these type of militantly ignorant, lowest socio-economic class whites.

She could have interviewed in affluent areas - you would have heard the same sentiments and the same willful ignorance delivered on a whiff of magnolia.

And that one guy is wrong. They won't die for their magical belies (he calls them morals, they're not). Look what happened with their personhood amendment - the minute it was explained, even the lowest of the low LCD voter saw the illogic.

I've visited Mississippi and other states in the south, not a big fan of brushing an entire state with a broad brush, but aside from the "tourist" areas, I did meet many nice people.
But there are places still fighting the civil war.

One of the nice people I met, was at a gas station where I had spent 70 dollars for gas, an oil change, and a tire repair. Just before leaving, our son, who was 7 at the time, was thirsty and asked for a "red pop" (soda). I went back in the store for change for a dollar, the man who just accepted my money for repairs and gas unlocked the drawer, ran his fingers through the change, slammed the door shut and said "We ain't got no change for yankees".
I was seriously offended and asked politely for change and he repeated himself louder. I said "But my yankee money was good enough to fix our car and get gas"

To which he said "That's cause we don't want no yankees to get stuck here".

From what I could tell, he had a full set of teeth.

And the "landscapes WERE of heartbreaking beauty there". Not as heartbreaking as giving my young (white, if that matters) son a "teachable moment" in ignorance and the Civil War.

Yessir, there was a time when the rural South knew with absolutely no shred of doubt that the Democratic Party spoke for THEM and represented THEIR interests.

Note that I say *they knew this.* The Democratic Party still represents their interests well more than conservatives ever could, but these people don't realize it anymore. That is a longstanding problem that I do not personally see the Democratic Party has made a sustained, determined effort to solve.

To add to my comments, let me give one example of a value issue the Democrats should have seized first and run with: revering the family, as in keeping families together. And do you know what the number one reason behind divorce is? Financial stress. Framing their economic positions in the context of protecting families would go a long way in making these policy positions emotionally compelling to a wide swathe of voters.

I was horrified by the interviews. Those were real people, not some characters from a satire. Too bad they reinforce the reputation of the Deep South. I know someone just like the toothless hoarder and he lives in Canada. (But it is also true that he is a racist, sexist, drunken fool. However, he does vote.)

This paragraph should send her bots into a frenzy..

At least one source close to the Palin family in Wasilla, Alaska, has confirmed that Palin "still believes it is God's will" that she serve as president, if not in 2012 then perhaps in 2016. Every move she has made in recent months -- every attack on Romney and Obama, every push for an elongated primary, every speculation about an open convention -- has been issued with this political calculation in mind.

And Andree McLeod had this to say...

People can laugh all they want, but she ain't done. She's only developed a tougher skin through all 'this' and, out of desperation, has to inflict more damage for reasons only Sarah and her constantly-changing set of patrons knows. She has become even more dangerous and desperate

  27. Sarah Palin writes a tribute to Breitbart and (surprise surprise) makes it all about her (Dunn is so right about her intentions as is Ann Coulter):

"During the ’08 campaign, the same media that reported breathlessly about an old used tanning bed I purchased to get some sun during the dark Alaskan winter, couldn’t be bothered to investigate Barack Obama’s associations, statements or even his voting record as a state senator. Suntans and what I wore on the campaign trail were more important than Obama’s political background. Unbelievable.

But when you come to think of it, the media didn’t investigate either of our actual political records very closely.

Barack Obama and I both served in political office in states with a serious corruption problem. Though there is a big difference between serving as the CEO of a city, then a state, and regulating domestic energy resources, and being a liberal Community Organizer, bear with me on the comparison. The difference between my record and Barack Obama’s is that I fought the corrupt political machine my entire career (and I have twenty years of scars to prove it) on the local, state, and national level. But Obama didn’t fight the corruption he encountered. He went along with it to advance his career. Graft, cronyism, and quid pro quo are the methods of the Chicago political machine from which he emerged.

You would think the media – those watchdogs of the public trust – would be interested in this. But they refused to vet Barack Obama. With tingles up their legs, they shielded him."

    1. Would Todd Palin have been able to successfully run his prostitution ring if his wife hadn't been Mayor of Wasilla? Or half-term CEO of Alaska? Divorce Palin's sister and she'll fire those who won't fire the ex-husband. So what if Palin kids sink boats, vandalize 40+ school buses and B&E then vandalize private homes. Todd's sister breaks and enters then robs a house while her 4 year old sits in the car - no problem Palin will get everybody off because she's the mayor of a tiny town and then CEO of Alaska.
Talk about a "corrupt political machine".

Ms. Palin gets deeper and deeper into thinking she's on the same level as President Obama although she can't remember to call him PRESIDENT Obama. Guess somebody took that index card.

Well, maybe I missed something but that guy without teeth living in what looks like a hoarder's hovel is likely the recipient of some sort of government support - welfare, I mean. Black or white, poverty tends to correlate with poor education (since our public school system is based on local real estate tax funds) and thus perpetuates general ignorance.

I can't explain the other racist assholes.

Southern tradition, perhaps? Of course there are exceptions, it might have been good if Ms. Pelosi had found some in the interests of neutrality. This kind of thing does unfortunately allow the GOP to push the "Dems are elitist" mantra. More votes for Republicans, sorry to say - and they will probably go on about this piece for weeks.

It's frustrating, and shows yet again why I am not so keen on Bill Maher. He and his producers have big mouths.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous6:43 AM

I can't believe someone from the state that gave us Sarah Palin has the nerve to sneer at Mississippi. What you hear coming out of these people's mouths are the same sentiments expressed by the poor and uneducated all over the country, from Spokane to Wasilla to the impoverished hamlets of New Hampshire. Mississippi is the poorest state in the nation, so of course this level of ignorance and fundamentalist thinking widespread will be particularly widespread there.

Pelosi obviously went to the Mississippi Delta region, the poorest district of the poorest state in the nation; she didn't go stick her microphone in the faces of college professors sitting in Starbucks in Oxford.

Rather than sneer at these desperately poor people, liberals and Democrats need to find a way to connect to them, to reach them, to inspire them. Think of all the fat, poor, uneducated women you've seen interviewed at Sarah's nationwide booksignings who say, "Sarah connects to me in a way no one ever has. She's like me, she's the first politician I ever felt as they were talking to me." THAT is what we need to do--not make fun of these people's poverty, ignorance, and ill-health, and alienate them more.

Look at the houses these poor people are living in; that is poverty at the most grinding, dehumanizing level, more like something you'd expect to find in a third world country. At least two of the men interviewed in this segment are obviously suffering from dementia, no doubt exacerbated by poor medical care (Mississippi is also at the bottom for that). I love you, Gryphen, but shame on you for this. (BTW, I don't live in Mississippi, and never have, although I will admit that I live in her almost equally-benighted neighbor, Louisiana.)

Look at the racist biker and the racist old idiot on the porch.
Look at the man who thinks you can't be an American if you are a muslim. Poverty doesn't necessarily breed racism and hate. Why should anyone feel sorry for them? They'd be saying the same thing if they were wearing oxford shirts--only more politically correct.

You do realize that every one of these men think they are better than any black or hispanic person who is educated, prosperous or just making it in the world--simply because of their white skin? They make my skin crawl.

This isn't just poverty. Some of the best people I know were poor as dirt. These people are something else, they don't want to be enlightened. Especially where there may be a black man at the end of it. I know them. As a child one of these idiots poured bleach in a cup his child let me drink out of--then changed his mind and threw it away in front of my seven year old self.

Take them at their words that they choose their ignorance, jesus and poverty over a better life. And oh yeah--I come from a family of social workers--

    2. Anonymous12:04 PM

Angela, of course it's poverty and ignorance, which comes from the state's abysmal education system, which again comes from the poverty. I'm not asking you to feel sorry for them; I'm talking about the stupidity of liberals reinforcing the GOP meme that we are all a bunch of elitists laughing at hicks. Why shoot ourselves in the foot, just so we can have a few laughs and feel superior? These people are the natural enemies of the GOP, yet the Republicans have succeeded in enlisting them and reinforcing their ignorance and prejudice. That is OUR failure.

Incidentally, I am Muslim, and not white, and yet, yes, I do feel sorry for them, even though they also infuriate me. Their real problem is a lack of true self esteem (which again comes from the poverty and the ignorance); the only way they can feel good about themselves if they believe they are better than the blacks and the non-Christians.

With so many anonymouses on here it is hard to figure out when a poster is the same poster who said thus and such in another post. I'd like to be able to get a sense of what each poster on here generally thinks, get to know them a little. Is that too much to ask? I think that G should insist that people use some sort of an indentifier and stop allowing anonymous posts.

If someone wants to respond to my anon posting that's great, and I'll respond back, but beyond that I don't want people to get to know me, really. There are other blogs where that is commonplace and honestly it can get kind of creepy.

Without sounding paranoid, I am quite sure the trolls around here would love it if they could track us by our monikers, also. Why make life easier for them?

I currently live in California, but will be moving to Mississippi in another year to live with my boyfriend, a native of the state. He lives outside of Jackson, in central Mississippi. The population is much, much more diverse that what Pelosi's video shows, and it's unfortunate that she only focused on a segment of the population that cast the most unflattering light. Sure, there's people like that in Mississippi. But there's also people like that in Southern California, Alaska, and just about any state in the US. Mississippi doesn't have a monopoly on poverty/ignorance just like California doesn't have a monopoly on education/intellect.

That video is spin, plain and simple, and if it's not then I'd really like to see Pelosi go to Central and Coastal Mississippi and conduct interviews there instead.

In all seriousness, Wasilla and for many other places in Alaska is NOT that different from Mississippi. Maybe a notch or two above, but you have to live in Alaska to understand my saying this. I completely understand why Sarah Palin is the way she is - you must consider the environment she was raised in - she is simply a product of it. So that should clear up a lot about why Sarah detests educated people, and has the NASCAR crowd, toothless, stupid, and inbred crowd still rooting for her. Her obsession with President Obama? She wants to get 'even' the score (he won, she lost) and his ignoring her just drives her more nuttier. She wants revenge.

I've come to the conclusion you must be, at the minimum, slightly mentally ill to live in Alaska. This is why I left the state and why I don't go back even to visit the relatives. In other words, (most) Alaskans are friggin' nuts - of which Sarah is good at - draining MEN's nuts.

  53. Mississippi's schools have been in the bottom of the nation for I don't know how long. Obviously generations.

It's a example of how a national education policy and control might be an improvement over states rule. Having an educated populace is a country's strength. It seems all industrialized major powers recognize this except the U.S. They have national public education, national standards, national funding. The U.S. wants a bargain, they want discount education, they want schools on the cheap. That is why teachers are being attacked. They are educated professionals that wish to be paid and treated as such. Whereas those making the decisions want teachers treated as the part time help at Walmart and compensated as such.

This is were education reform should concentrate. Reforming the way our schools are funded and standardizing curriculum across the nation. The core standards are a step in the right direction. At least Mississippi signed on to the. (Alaska and Texas taking a pass last I heard.)

Teacher training and credentialing needs to be standardized across the nation in addition to standardizing curriculum and funding. Without reforming these basics, anything else is shallow and transient.
