Courtesy of Politico:
Rick Santorum announced Tuesday afternoon that he is ending his campaign for the presidency, effectively closing out the GOP primary season and cementing Mitt Romney's status as his party's presumptive nominee.
The decision to shutter his campaign comes days after Santorum's youngest daughter, Bella, was hospitalized with a chronic and serious medical condition. Santorum's team said last night that Bella had been released from the hospital and Santorum was set to resume his campaign schedule.
But in Gettysburg today, Santorum said his family had conferred over the weekend and concluded it was time to bring his White House bid to a close.
"This was a time for prayer and thought, this past weekend, just like it was, frankly, when we decided to get into this race. Karen and I and the kids sat at the kitchen table and talked about our hopes and fears and concerns," Santorum said.
Well that should remove any lingering doubt that Mitt Romney WILL be the 2012 GOP nominee.
As if that were even still a question.
By the way I just want to say that as much as I DESPISE just about everything Rick Santorum stands for, I truly hope his daughter makes a speedy recovery and that she has many more happy years to spend with a family that clearly loves her.
I also hope that Santorum stays the hell out of politics from now on. He is the LAST thing this country needs.
Good riddance, you latently homosexual, bible-thumping misogynist.
ReplyDeleteNot that there's anything wrong with being a homosexual, latent or......uh.....otherwise. -:)
DeleteDamn! It woulda be such fun: Santorum/West vs Obama/Biden. (Santorum/Palin vs Obama/Biden, only in our dreams. But, oh, what dreams they woulda been!)
Delete... hrh... lemme help you out: wet ones?
DeleteSorry, but Gryph set the tone with his heading!
(Oh, that didn't sound right either!)
Anyway... plug away...
All jokes aside, while I am glad there is one less strident voice for discrimination of all kinds, I wish nothing but the best for Bella.
fromthediagonal
My late partner woulda gotten a lot of mileage out of that headline. He, too, had a way with words.
DeleteBTW, I wonder if Frothy have a quick smoke after finishing, but before walking away?
>>My late partner woulda gotten a lot of mileage out of that headline. He, too, had a way with words.
DeleteSo sorry for your loss. I'm sure your partner is deeply missed for their wit and agility with words.
You forgot to mention Santorum aborted...his cam-pain. Not because of his daughter, but because his home state was going to give him another ass kicking.
DeleteOh sh!t!!
ReplyDelete(sorry, couldn't resist)
I wonder how Palin is feeling about the latest news? Her bots are devastated! They are all in a pickle.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for Bella too.
Someone enlighten me:
ReplyDeleteDoes Romney still have a chance of not getting the number of delegate votes he needs? Is that where a brokered convention comes into play? Does Palin still have a shot at the nomination?
I just 3want to know when for sure the door will be slammed shut on the lunatics trying to draft her.
-OzMud
That door was slammed shut by Sarah herself when she finally announced that she was not running. Romney will get the nomination. There never was going to be a brokered convention. That was just another Palin-bot delusion.
DeleteThe super delegates ie: party bigwigs, Congresscritters, have enough votes to keep this from being brokered.
DeleteNever underestimate the scope and scale of the delusions a NPD Queen can harbor. Personally I'm convinced she was angling for the #2 spot: reclaim the 2008 glory days when she was everybody's darling for the 30 seconds it took before intelligent people realized what a total dunce she is. And now the grizzled Grifter Queen is left with Mittens to suck up to? Oh, wouldn't that be fun to watch. I won't say many good things about Mitt but I will say one: I think he has too many brains and too much class, not to mention too many college degrees and life accomplishments and respectable young adult children, to stand being in the same room with Sarah Palin.
DeleteMittens and the GOP got Grifter Governor elected.
DeleteCurious what their current relationship is, especially after her endorsement of Newt.
I agree with you whole heartedly, but the fact he did so well in red states such as my own is scary. Although frankly I think Republicans painting themselves into the fundamentalist corner is a sign that fewer and fewer voting blocs can be counted to support the current, extremist-dominated incarnation of the party. We'll either see them disintegrate or splinter into factions in the next couple of election cycles, I think.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Gryphen, may his family see happier times, particularly his youngest daughter, but may he forever stay away from politics.
ReplyDeleteNot only Santorum, but also Palin, Cain, West, Gingrich, Perry (who has officially retired and is drawing a pension while serving as Governor), Cantor, both Pauls, and McConnell - oh, and throw in Enhofe, DeMint (demented), and a few others.
May the Governors of Wisconsin, Michigan, Alabama, Arizona, and Florida also find other employment after their next elections - away from the public sector.
May all the sane and sensible people get out to vote and help return our nation to a moderate governance with both sides willing to listen, compromise and work to the best interests of all of our people, not just the wealthy.
Amen!
DeleteHe dropped out because he was going to get his ass kicked in his home state. His daughter has been in and out of the hospital for months. Santorum did this for himself, not his family.
ReplyDeleteI agree - to fail in his home state would remove any hopes of another run in 2016. I felt his "for the sake of his daughter (& family)" was disengenuous. Especially since he's pointed out several times, he's doing it with an ill child and Gawd showed him His plan.
DeleteWith Newt's campaign in millions of debt...
To quote Ann Coulter: "Romney will be the nominee and we'll loose." YAHOO!!
Oh you of suspicious mind! I totally agree with you. I think he had some private polls that looked pretty bad.
DeleteYes. A month ago, he was way ahead in all the PA polls. Last week, he was neck and neck with Romney. Then, some polls started showing Romney in the lead. He was going to lose --- not by as wide a margin has he lost the general election in 2006, but he was going to lose.
DeleteMy fear is that we will have to listen to his hate and bigotry again in 2016. I truly despise this sanctimonious theocrat. And now he will look the martyr sacrificing his career to be with the daughter he has for the most part ignored over the past what seems to be 2800 months. The hypocrisy of people like him and Palin is nauseating.
When he lost by a landslide in 2006, I really thought he was finished. This season has fed his already enormous ego and I'm afraid we'll never get rid of him.
Thank you!!!
DeleteWhy even mention poor kid??
She has been very sick
This WHOLE TIME
And Mom was left to deal with it

And "nigg"s,
FUCK RICK SANTORUM!!!
And don't mention kids to garner sympathy,
They're off limits, like they don't exist.
Who wouldn't wish for the little girl to recover?
BLATANT and disgusting cover up for the inevitable ass kicking by Mittens.
Please.

DeleteThank you!!!
Why even mention poor kid??
I have no doubt of Gryphen's sincerity. He says what he means and means what he says.
Had he NOT mentioned Bella, someone would call him a heartless, vile, mean spirited and evil person.
As much as I loathe Santorum (I survived his evil reign in Pennsylvania), unlike another ex politician, he didn't inject her into each and every appearance, nor held her as a human shield. (The madonna/child imagery doesn't work as well with a man for some odd reason) So I think he genuinely loves her and deserves recognition for at least that.
He quit because he couldn't bear to lose in Pennsylvania. One poll I saw had him five points behind Romney, another later poll had him 15 points behind with a margin of error of 3-7. He had ONE ad air, and it tanked so bad, he had to pull it. Romney's had three ads that didn't mention him at all, but were attacking President Obama on really lame issues, skirting "obamacare" and "religion", but oddly focused on the female vote.
Santorum gives me the absolute creeps. I was raised Catholic (don't practice the faith anymore), as is he, and I found he actually took the faith back centuries in his thought process. He would scare the hell out of me if he were ever elected to any office!
ReplyDeleteHe got out before he lost his own state in the primary - Pennsylvania! The gettin' is good! Don't let the door hit you in the ass Ricky boy!
Well you KNOW that the media whore will be putting her two cents in since she can't stand that Frothy is getting all the attention.
ReplyDeleteShe'll be going on one her Fox slots talking up the GOP race and hatin' on President Obama, spewing her word salad about whatever cockamame stuff her ghostwriter has put together.

Sarah's so predictable, the rattle brain can't help herself.
DeleteI cheered when I heard he was leaving the race. I can't stand his politics. Now perhaps he can stay home and give his wife and family the support and attention they sorely need and deserve. Having a handicapped medically fragile child like Bella is a full time job in itself. The emotional toll on the entire family must be incredible. He was an ass to run for president while his young daughter is still alive. She deserves to have her daddy home and in her life while she is living.
ReplyDeleteHe saw this reception and went 'Oh shit, there's no WAY I could even get in this guy's magnetic field' and then he quit.
ReplyDeletehttp://theobamadiary.com/2012/04/10/florida-atlantic-university/
There's only one down side to Ricky's dropping out, which is a daily lack of crazy and insulting outbursts against anyone who's not a white Christian male.
ReplyDeleteSantorum's intolerance, prejudice and outright hostility to anyone not practicing life or religion as he sees it was painfully obvious.
He makes no apologies for attacking and demeaning others who don't hold his views on very personal issues which should have NO PLACE in politics.
The man was actually running to be Moral Judge and High Inquisitor of the USA
Two things
ReplyDeleteRomney was going to win Santorum's home state.
How embarrassing for Santorum who was saying on many occassions that Romney & Gingrich would have to win their home states or get out.
Second -- When in the 'Office of President', you can't suspend your 'job' every 6 weeks for a chronically ill child in the hospital. Any 'regular joe worker' would be fired for same and when the 'Leader of the Country' - it's not open for an option.
It reminds me of the many comments about Palin -- that you can't hang up in the middle of strained negotiations with a world leader say in Iran or China, etc and hang up to run to you kid. The 'Office of President' is not a part-time job. The G20 or any number of meetings in the country of a world leader -- you cannot expect everyone in the world to operate on 'Rick' time.
I'm not saying this because of wanting anything to happen to his daughter -- I'm saying it as a reality.
When you have a child like that -- he was an idiot to even try to run. The man is devoid of a brain.
Also, too, Palin couldn't bring her kids to any meetings and use them as human shields as she usually does.....so people don't ask her any tough questions.
DeleteWhat a freak she is.
I want to see a current picture
DeleteOf Sarah
And her son, Trig.
Sorry Gryph, but I am thoroughly unconvinced that Santorum himself cared about Bella anymore than I think that $carah Paylin cares about Trig. He could well have run next year or cycle and spent what little time he has at home with her. Not being mean, just realistic and honest. Conditions like this don't "get better." And more and more frequent hospitalizations like have been reported usually points to systems shutting down in a chronically ill patient. I tend to think that my hopes and wishes have very little effect on the realities of a medical condition- if they had, I'd have a host of realities and friends still alive who succumbed to various diseases. I won't engage in magical thinking like that. I would hope the child suffers as little as possible and isn't used as an experimental pawn by her obviously deluded parents.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post - family can and should take precedence over other things - but when you know about the issues before the event, running for President seems pointless - one of the positions that the corporations can't turn into a part time job is President of the USA. In that regard the Obama family have been supported so very well by Michelle's mother - grandmothers are a wonderful part of family life
DeleteI agree wholeheartedly... no magical thinking!
DeleteYou obviously know whereof you speak.
fromthediagonal
She cannot ever be normal. She has a third chromosome 18 and she will always suffer. Most of these children die in the first few months if they are even born alive. I do not wish her or the Santorums any pain, but the reality is that Bella is chronically ill, and death panel or no, someone will have to decide at what point she is in too much pain to continue expensive medical treatments.
DeleteExactly. This isn't ill-wishing, it is just reality:
DeleteExpectations (prognosis) for those with Trisomy 18
Half of infants with this condition do not survive beyond the first week of life. Some children have survived to the teenage years, but with serious medical and developmental problems.
Well said, as well as the poster who said he couldn't suspend being POTUS.
DeleteAn illness is a devastating roller coaster of ups and downs,
Karen, Bella and all the other children deserved to have a father
Who LIVED this with them,
Who suffered WITH THEM,
NOT over the phone or Skype.
Be there, together,
As. A. Family.
What ARE his real values when it takes a political loss to finally send him home to be the father his children need and husband his wife needs?
I agree to a point, no doubt he loves his daughter, but in Rick's uber Roman Catholic "Opus Dei" whirrled view, raising children is the female's responsibility.
DeleteCan anyone imagine Rick Santorum changing a diaper, helping with homekeepking chores, grocery shopping, or cooking?
Women are slaves and the man is the king of his castle, the sole provider to wachjobs like him.

DeleteIt's the same old story -- the majority of the right don't give a shit about their kids once they've calfed them
Oops, that post was meant for the next thread, sorry!
DeleteI'm sorry his small daughter is so ill but Santorum and his wife knew that she would likely become gravely ill. Newt Gingrich may not make the Utah primary ballot June 26 because his campaign’s $500 check to the state bounced.
The Salt Lake City Tribune reports:
Utah Elections Director Mark Thomas said a designated agent for the Gingrich campaign brought the filing papers and a check for $500 in March, but after the check was deposited, the state was notified by the bank that the check had bounced. He said the office has tried to contact the Gingrich campaign through the telephone number and email provided on the application, but have not received a response.

DeleteThe Sea of Pea is in political suicide mode (sitting this one out). They are bemoaning the end of Conservativism, wailing for their Queen Sarah to come to their rescue (sure that she STILL is campaigning in 'stealth' mode).
ReplyDeleteWhat I see happening is everyone who is remotely conservative will head over the Gingrich and you'll see a 'surge' in his fundraising numbers immediately after this announcement from Ricky.
Paul may get a bump, but not much, since he still has the 'kooky' label to get over.
Yep, now we're gonna have to deal with egomaniac Gingrich (remembering Todd the Pimp endorsed him and Sarah the Sick One sings his praises) and heading into southern states that Mittens will struggle in...Gingrich has the racist dog whistles down pat.
Texas is a BIG deal and Paul is from Texas, so THAT could prove interesting. But then whoever is friendliest to the oil industries will get the most support. Rich man Romney or Dr. No. Ron Paul?
..but if Santorum throws his delegates to Mittens, that will seal it.
Unfortunately, we'll see the headlines, 'Newt raises $1M in 24 hours' and 'Gingrich surging' and it will be a death match with Romney and Newt, triangulating with President Obama.
Until Romney CRUSHES Newt with his 'carpet bombing' tactics with negative ads.
And then the gloves REALLY come off for our wonderful President and I, for one, am NOT looking forward to the political/character bloodbath.
President OBAMA 2012 ABSOFRICKINLUTELY!
http://conservatives4palin.com/2012/04/rick-santorum-will-reportedly-suspend-his-campaign.html#disqus_thread
Gryphen, let me tell you something about Rick "Google Me NOW!" Santorum that you and your librul Bolshevik blog buddies will NEVER understand. It all comes down to ONE word: Determination, tenacity, gumption, grit, commitment and fortitude!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, he did NOT "shutter" his campaign, he "suspended" it. That means he can continue raising and spending money for santorum's inevitable surging from behind to BECOME PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Do you REALLY think 'failure' is even a word that exists in Santorum's vocabulary?? GET REAL!! This is a man who lost his Senate seat by the largest percentage in the history of democracy, but did that diminish his spirit in any way? HELL, NO It DIDNT!! In fact, few people know that when Santorum isn't futilely campaigning for the GOP presidential nomination he actually goes to the U.S. Senate office building in Washington, D.C. and pretends he's still Pennsylvania's proud representative in America's most august deliberative body! THAT'S called "alternate conservative reality"; something you libruls just will never understand.
And I'll tell you something else: even tho today it's looking somewhat less likely that Santorum is going to win the 2012 nomination soon, I GUARANTEE you that even defeat will NEVER stop him from keeping up the fight. EVER!
In fact, I will bet you a shiny new Bella Abzug commemorative 35 cent piece, that ten years from today, you will be able to walk in to The Dew Drop Inn Tavern, Pub and Saloon in Pigeon Toe, PA and you will find a sad, lonely but fiercely defiant Rick Santorum sitting beneath a tattered banner reading "SANTORUM 2012!" in his rumpled sweater vest with its duct-taped patches and whiffy 'stale blue cheese' aroma.
And by dropping a dollar in the slightly crumpled Rolling Rock beer can crudely labelled "CAMPANE CONTRIBUSHUNS" you'll be able to sit with the proud and somewhat befuddled candidate himself and hear first hand his plans for defeating "that black arab commie in the White House".
And, ya know, Gryphen, (if that's really your name, which I highly doubt) with his steely-eyed focus on the future, I have to say Rick "I Coulda Been A Contender" Santorum's chances of success will be a LOT better than you think!

ReplyDeletePrayers for little Bella. I don't care for Santorum or his brand of politics and can't find a single thing that I share in common with him, but he did the right thing. I find it curious that he got in in the first place, but at least now he can go home and provide a comforting home for his child and remain present for her and for his other kids.
ReplyDeleteIt would be commendable if he actually dropped out because of his daughter and not because he was about to lose bad in his home state and his racism is nearly bursting out of his sweater vest.

An excerpt from the Fox mole:
'So here I am. And I come bearing gifts. The video above is of Mitt Romney and Sean Hannity bantering before the taping of an interview for the “Hannity Vegas Forum” in February. Of note: Romney professes his and his wife Ann’s well-known love of horseriding, praising the qualities of the “Austrian Warmbloods” that his wife rides—the are “dressage” horses, he notes—while maintaining his own preference for the “smoother gait” of his own “Missouri foxtrotter.”
Now there’s nothing wrong with Mitt and his wife loving horseback riding. But remember this video next time Romney attacks Obama for golfing. The inherent elitism and snootiness of golf is NOTHING compared to competitive horseback riding. And I think Mitt loses points with the GOP base for his correct pronunciation of dressage. To GOP-voter ears it sounds not only gay, but even worse, French.'
Mitt Ro explained his wife’s choice of horses, “She (Ann) has Austrian Warmbloods, which are a dressage horse. It’s a kind of horse for the sport that she’s in. Me, I have a Missouri foxtrotter. So mine is like a quarter horse, but just with a much better gait. It moves very fast, and doesn’t tire, and it’s easy to ride, meaning it’s not boom, boom, boom. It’s just smooth, very smooth.”
Dressage horses are kinda like the fancy pants of horses.
Ironies of ironies, Sean Hannity manages to make Mitt Ro appear slightly human in this video. It’s a matter of relativity, after all. Hannity is such an utter slime ball that while Mitt Ro comes off soft and elite, he also appears perhaps human. He does thank the production assistant (?) for the water, after all.
Even more damage is going to come from knowing there is a mole in the Conservative Kingdom. Nothing makes people jumpy like being O’Keefed, and this video isn’t even selectively edited.
The real question here is does Ann ride a Lipizzaner stallion? Lipizzans are all white dressage horses, the picks of emperors and kings — descended from Arabian blood. You can watch them perform at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna — you know, when you take the private jet to Austria to pick up your favorite chocolates.
So how damaging is the Fox Mole’s Easter surprise?
http://www.politicususa.com/fox-mole-mitt-romney-easy-ride/
Well how ELSE do you suggest we get to Vienna?
DeleteSurely you're not suggesting that we ride in, choke, an other persons plane?
Yuck!
In fact, I'm surprised Annie doesn't have her OWN jet!
She said she doesn't even consider herself wealthy.
Good thing, too,
Showing up to the stables with "shared" jet.
Frankly, it's embarrassing.
Woo Hoo! Wonder if he ever rides bareback?
DeleteSeriously, Mittens is so disconnected and phony it's pathetic. He has an ad running in PA where Ann does an introduction (like we never met him before), and he goes on to talk about what women voters look for in a candidate and why they vote Republican. WTF?
And Mr. Frothy, you would do well to remember this:
ReplyDelete** It is the People who mandate; not God, not Kings, not Popes, but the People. And standing there on the steps of Lincoln’s secular shrine myself, and staring off toward Washington’s obelisk, I saw through the National Mall a tenuous link with the Founding Fathers, a sort of timeline of their will, a secular capital to govern a secular nation comprised of very religious people, who recognized that to have their rights of belief, that everyone in that “We the People” had to have their rights of belief respected as well. There was to be no more Catholics, no more Jews, no more Protestants: only Americans, united not through loyalty to their respective doctrines, but to the idea of the Constitution itself and their inalienable rights as human beings. **

MUTINY! This is awesome! Jumping ship from Fox and setting the record straight.
ReplyDeleteThe Fox Mole—a long-standing, current employee of Fox News Channel who will be providing Gawker with regular dispatches from inside the organization.
...I always intended to keep my mouth shut. The plan was simple: get hired, keep my head down and my views to myself, work for a few months, build my resume, then eventually hop to a new job that didn't make me cringe every morning when I looked in the mirror.
That was years ago. My cringe muscles have turned into crow's feet. The ten resumes a month I was sending out dwindled into five, then two, then one, then zero. No one wants me. I'm blacklisted.
I work at Fox News Channel.
The final straw for me came last year.
...That was it for me. It wasn't that the one incident was so bad, in and of itself. But it was so galvanizing, and on top of so many other little incidents, that I guess it just finally pushed me over the edge.
So here I am. And I come bearing gifts.

Sounds absolutely scrumptious!
DeleteI'm looking forward to stories about how everybody laughs and rolls their eyes at Sarah Palin.
DeleteSo guy faulkesesque! I love it. My bet is it's Tucker Carlson.
DeleteCurious if Boner condemns them
ReplyDeleteLike he did Mittens?
Again, I doubt it;
I think that was more a slap to Mittens than support for our Pres.
So, where is the condemnation, Boner?
Oh my!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.democraticunderground.com/1002115624
Ok now that was fugly. I need to go bleach my eyes.
DeleteTHAT is the funniest photo! The look on mitt's face, along with those behind him are priceless!
DeleteThanks for the laugh!
I despise that Santorum, like Palin, thinks it is appropriate to use his daughter's condition as a vehicle to further his political agenda. And yes, I too hope that Little Bella recovers uneventfully and is able to lead a happy and fulfulling life.
ReplyDeleteI would have made one minor change to your headline, instead of finally finishes, I would have put pulls out.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately little Bella has trig18, it is a horrendous birth defect and any day could be her last, and it might be better if those praying for her to get well pray for her to go peacefully. I medically fostered one child with this defect and it beyond anyones comprehension of what she is going through. They knew how bad off she was and he chose to run and NOT be home, until he needed an excuse which I find completey deplorable.
ReplyDeleteBut luckily for the Frothys they have his lifetime entitlements of a huge "retirement" for a few yrs of work and healthcare for life.
I agree with you completely. Given Santorum's "lifetime entitlements" for having contributed absolutely nothing to the country despite having served in the House and Senate, he is particularly unfeeling about providing access to good health care to all Americans.
DeleteHe has used the medical abortion of one child and the birth of Bella with a devastating disability to further a mean and selfish political career. No one says it but his wife should not have had her last child; she should have used contraception because of her age. Neither Santorum nor his wife have acted responsibly over the past several months. With a seriously disabled child, their responsibility was with her not with pandering for national money and attention anywhere but home.
Gryphen, thanks for showing a great deal of class regarding Bella.
ReplyDeleteSo Dick Santorum is down for the count, but he'll live on forever on Google.
The coward couldn't face a loss in Pennsylvania. What a wuss!
this is not the end of Santorum. I predict an Obama win and the Republicans will claim that Romney wasn't conservative enough. Santorum or someone more to the right will run. That person will also loose to maybe Hillary Clinton? (she is tired now but I suspect in a couple of years she will re energize) The Republican party will have to reevaluate itself and perhaps after 16 years of Democrats they will figure out that they need to put up a more moderate Republican.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we will be loosing a lot of the far right to suicide after this election, they will be so upset they will be "going home".
Bella has Trisomy 18, Edwards Syndrome. Odds for growth to adulthood are slim: http://www.emaxhealth.com/1275/trisomy-18-affects-santorum-daughter-many-others
ReplyDeleteThis is a very sick child, but I doubt her condition is what stopped Santorum--he knew he would never have the delegates and couldn't catch up to Rmoney. Losing PA was the final straw. so much for those vaunted Republican "family values."
Is this a famed family meeting like the Palin's meetings, where Sarah (who by her own account categorically lies and keeps things from her husband and children) confers with them to make these life changing decisions?
ReplyDeleteSantorum only pulled out to escape the humiliating loss he was going to face in his home state Primary once again. If he lost that on his bid for the highest office for land, he wouldn't have been able to recover.
Now if he loses, it is by the grace of his withdrawal. If he won, he gets the accolades of putting his family first.
May not like the guy one iota, but at least he had the guts to go all in, as opposed to a gutless wonder like Sarah Palin who wants to be elevated to a ticket without the cajones to actually put the work in.
