There are some hard truths in this rant that might be hard for some of us on the liberal side to hear, but Maher is exactly right in recognizing that Obama has certainly NOT done everything that liberals elected him to do, and certainly has done NOTHING to earn so much hatred from the rabid Right Wing.
I like that Bil Maher continues to make jokes about #1 donating a million dollars to Obama #2 Sarah Palin, who demanded an apology from President Obama when one of his donors (Maher) made a tasteless comment about her.
ReplyDeleteMaher is an entertainer who uses politics as one of the subjects of his jokes-- just like Will Rogers, Mort Sahl and Bob Hope did. Every comedian made jokes about what was current in their day. Sarah Palin will remain the subject of jokes, comments and criticism as long as she posts her opinion on her Facebook, on Bristol's Facebook and on Fox TV. She is paid to post these opinions, and that makes her fair game for comedians like Maher. If Sarah (and Bristol) do not want criticism, it's simple. All they have to do is stop saying such mean things about Obama.
While we are at holding the candidate responsible for the comments of a donor, let's attack Romney for refusing to refudiate (Sarah's word, not mine) people who call President Obama a traitor, unAmerican, and someone who was born in Kenya. (Note to The Donald. Even if Obama was born in Kenya, he was born to an American mother and can claim American citizenship through her).
That Romney is so closely associating himself with Trump and not 'refudiating' the birther crap -- he's therefore 'wrapping' himself in the 'birtherism'. That's seen and heard by those in the middle -- and not sitting well. Those undecided will have these tidbits of knowledge and will 'come to the light'. Many just don't want to admit it for the many polls. It's just part of the game.

I bear in mind that no matter what the President wants to do, the Repugs will oppose it. And they vote without thinking, in a bloc. I don't think there's ever been a President who's had the opposing party put their opposition to him ahead of the country before- although you could see it coming during the Clinton administration, if you were paying attention.

Given who his opposition will be in the upcoming election, I don't see there's anybody else to vote for. I think Obama's wicked smart, and he's playing the long game, and giving the repugs enough rope to hang themselves with.
Comedians are entertainers and I don't form my political opinions on their schticks. Maher describes himself as a "liberal" but he's really a libertarian who just wants to smoke pot legally and make a lot of money. His media masters require him to bend over frequently, regardless of what people think he gets away with.

While I'm all for decriminalization of pot, meaning growing your own if you like and not being jailed for small quantitities, legalization implies something quite different, and puts it squarely in the corner of those who would profit most from it. It's a weed, for chrissakes, not some valuable, rare plant.

Maher, Stewart & Colbert are typically the only info the youth watch with regard to politics. They don't watch or read the pundits. So if info is getting through to them by way of Maher, Stewart & Colbert and it keeps them interested and active, it works to the majority of PBO.
Many people don't listen to politics for the long drawn out primaries and election periods. Other countries have elections for their leaders that are only about 8 weeks long. The U.S. is a 24/7/365, year in, year out election. Campaigns never end which is why so many do 'tune out'. They start their next election campaign the day after they've won their last. In fact, I read some article last week that there is someone starting to do speeches for 2016. WTF?

I bought 1000 shares but am not concerned that the price went down. I don't engage in Facebook but thought it might be a nice place to stash a little cash for the longterm. We got into Apple at $16 bux/share and that has paid off nicely. I'd like to give FB a chance and I think at minimum we can double in a year, if not, it was not an expensive stock so I can't quite figure out what people are complaining about. I don't support it, but I'll be happy to make some money off of it :-)

Because they Congress stonewalled, and sandbagged him, although not as bad as they do President Obama. Because President Obama is Black and Clinton is white, Clinton did not get mistreated as much.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised that the President personally would agree with much of what Maher said and G seconded. I'm there too. But think for one minute what pushing those particular hot button points in this already volatile climate would mean. Not just for Obama but the progressive movement as well. This would be just what the GOP ordered. It would feed right into their propaganda.
ReplyDeleteI choose to applaud my President's efforts to date. I haven't yet forgotten ALL that he HAS accomplished, the groundwork he has begun to lay, his campaign aspirations and dreams for a better America. I recall vividly the obstruction he faced in this progress.
Sadly, effective and long term change comes slowly and it comes at less than a snail's pace in a country divided nearly 50-50. I have been fortunate to see numerous folks in my circles change from radical and moderate right to "hmmm" over these past three + years and I credit it to President Obama. I think many have seen who stands with each side. Pretty soon, hobnobbing with the likes of Limbaugh, Palin, Beck, Trump, Nugent, Gingrich doesn't feel so honorable or inviting anymore..... These are the people we need. People who are embarrassed to hang with thugs.

Yeah, he didn't do some of what I wanted him to (Dick and Bush before the hague, for instance). But like a turtle, the only way to get ahead is to stick your neck out, and no one can accuse President Obama of not sticking his neck out, even when it's not a good idea politically. This man is so undeserving of the hate flung in his direction.
