CNN moves to the right to more directly compete with Fox News, starts hemorrhaging viewers at alarming rate. MSNBC stifles case of the giggles.

"Wait, how many have left? Is it the beard? Is it too Marxist looking?"
Courtesy of TV by the Numbers:

The bad ratings news for CNN keeps rolling in.

May 2012* was CNN’s lowest month in primetime for total viewers in over 20 years (since October 1991). It was also CNN’s second lowest-rated month in over 20 years in the news target adults 25-54 demographic.

The hour by hour ratings situation was also grim. CNN’s 9pm show, Piers Morgan Tonight, delivered CNN's lowest-rated hour in more than 20 years in both P2+ and in A25-54. Erin Burnett OutFront drew CNN's worst adults 25-54 demo in the 7pm timeslot in over 20 years.

Compared to May, 2011, CNN lost more than half of its audience in both primetime and total day in both total viewers and in the adults 25-54 demographic. The majority of CNN’s programs lost more than half of their viewership compared to the same time period last month.

Here is more courtesy of Politicususa:

CNN’s problems started when the network bosses got the bright idea that they should try to copy Fox News, and move to the right. After climbing into bed with the Tea Party Express and hiring far right wingers Erick Erickson and Dana Loesch led to the current ratings disaster, what would you expect CNN to do?

If you said hire more right wingers and conservatives, congratulations, you are qualified for an upper management position at CNN. The network’s latest hire, Fox News castoff Margaret Hoover, let the cat out the bag, “Executives at CNN have been looking for fresh faces and new talent with conservative perspectives, and in the end, offered me an opportunity that was too good to pass up. Indeed, competition, that sturdy pillar of capitalism, is alive and well in the cable news industry.”

Good strategy, IF you are working to help MSNBC rise to the top of the cable news market that is.

Oh CNN!  Did you REALLY think those low information viewers were going to leave the Fox News pablum, for YOUR Wolf Blitzer spiced infotainment? What could you possibly have been thinking?

Besides even IF you had managed to lure a few viewers away, you DO realize that the majority of Fox viewers are elderly and just barely clinging to life right?  Not to mention the fact that Fox News is itself also losing viewers at an amazing rate, most likely due to attrition.

Personally I have a theory that most of the viewers of Fox News are stuck in waiting rooms, living in old folks homes, or committed to state run mental institutions where they don't have access to the TV remote control. Because if they did, HELLO Rachel Maddow!

Now, while I wish Rachel Maddow looked more like Erin Burnett, and had a less screechy voice, its a small price to pay, to see the most insightful, damn the torpedos newscast on television.

I keep worrying that the powers that have a stranglehold on everything media but the internet, will silence her sooner or later.

If so, I'll still be a fan and simply get her message from a blog or whatever.

      Maddow's voice "screechy?"

Man, you need your ears checked. There is only one truly screechy-voiced woman in the news and that is Sarah Palin.

Glad you like Maddow, but really, you need to rethink that opinion.

Even if she did sound like that, none of us would be willing to turn down the volume. She rules!

    3. Rachel Maddow's looks have nothing to do with her extraordinary skill, intelligence, and ability to convey a message. I'm so glad she has a forum.

I'm a 60-something straight (happily married) woman, and I think Rachel Maddow's looks are just fine, thank you. I actually love the difference between the natural Rachel in some of her public service ads and the perfectly-made-up Rachel sitting at her MSNBC desk. Funny how all her freckles and moles disappear.

I agree, I think Rachel looks great, and in fact, I have had a girl crush on her since the first time I saw her on MSNBC. As a straight women, I might be swayed to the other team if Rachel was the one asking.

I find Rachel's voice to be the opposite of "screechy". I think you need a new TV.

I enjoy Rachel's show not only because I'm a progressive, but because she adds non-political news to it almost nightly. She's well-educated, intelligent, and appears to have a great staff assisting her.

As for her appearance -- perfect for what she does. Not as distracting as some of the female hosts on FOX news. Very professional.

I have a problem with Rachel's voice, too. Thank God I have power over the remote control. I can't tolerate high pitch or anything loud so Ed also gets the volume control treatment. Also Jessica Lopez.

    TeaNN?

I cannot recall the last time I watched a whole show on CNN. 2009?

I'll view an occasional Anderson-Cooper clip. Otherwise, I'll skip CNN video clips online.

I got tired of CNN when they became Fox Two.

I was getting an oil change at a car dealership recently and went to the waiting area where a guy was reading a magazine and Fox news was on. I asked the guy if he minded if I changed the channel, he said sure, no problem. As I changed it to MSNBC, I said to the guy "sorry but I hate Fox" and he said "I do too", which surprised me.

Then one of the salesmen came over, started watching MSNBC and said in a low voice "I've gotta catch some real news, a couple of the guys here turn that stupid Fox on and let it blast nonsense all day until a brave, intelligent person comes in and changes the channel". He then went on to tell me about his wife who was a teacher and how they've been affected by the WI Govenor eliminating Collective Bargaining, quite a bonding moment.

The reason Rachel "refused" to have McGinnis on her show is that she rarely has ANY news regarding Palin, as Palin is not a very significant force in politics. If you watched her show, you would note that she tends to stay away from "Tabloid Journalism", and pretty much anything involving the Palins is Tabloid fodder.

You know, maybe research shows that the majority of Faux New's viewers are into the senior category, but for good freaking grief, everyone one needs to rethink casting a wide net.

You must remember that a huge percentage of seniors (over 60) were flower children and hippies, or at least became progressives!

I am so very, very tired of people taking a look at our silver hair and thinking we are one of those Limbaugh or Fox people. We hate them with a passion and have always been in the progressive camp - quite actively. Many people are like us - not the stereotype.

I would certainly appreciate if a distinction could be made: "those seniors" who watch Faux News or "that percentage of seniors who listen to Limbaugh."

BTW, I run into many young men who spout nonsense like Palin, Limbaugh and the like. If I am my car, they often give me the finger because of my progressive bumper stickers.

So please show some intelligent restraint and stop pushing us all into the same category. End of rant.

I'm with you! I was not a flower child/hippy in my youth, but am now at the age of 65. I definitely am a progressive and appreciate the kindness, intelligence, "wily-ness" of our wonderful President Obama.

Not all "old" people are Fox or CNN listeners. Some of us actually think about our current world and the one we are leaving for our children and grandchildren, along with the few politicians that think the same way - and there a few young ones who are on the right path also.

I used to watch CNN because they were truly "fair and balanced." They used to show both sides of a story. But now all it seems they do is criticize our President. And that's OK with me if he really needs constructive criticism but that hasn't been the case. Fox News Lite, indeed.

    2. Me too. I watched CNN throughout the 2008 election campaign from the DNC and RNC on, but stopped about halfway through 2009 when John King began to show his true (right wing) colors.

I hated it when he and Wolf Blitzer would be interviewing a Dem, and when the interviewee was about to make an important point or finish his thought, they'd say "Well, we'll have to leave it there", then conveniently go to break.

Even after that I'd tune in on Anderson Cooper's show, but lately since he started his daytime show, I think even he has become unbearable.

I'm pretty much going to cable MSNBC and a variety online news sites for my news. And I sometimes go to the RW sites, just to see what they're talking about (I do my jeering on Twitter).

Let me just say I appreciate people like you that take one for the team and report back. Because many times, I want to puke before I give those sites clicks (ad revenue).

However, I know I need to get both sides of a story so I'll temporarily venture out to do so. It just makes me sick when I see so many believing such garbage.

A lot of truth here; my folks are gone, but my husband has one last parent. The guy wasn’t a good father, as evidenced by his daughter fleeing the family home (the wife was already gone). He’s into religion for the first time in his life. I kind of like the old guy… as he is… now.

      Ellen,

Yeah, gets under my skin sometimes, too, but I think of it from my own observations:

Not all older folks are low-info types, but the ones who happen to be low-info types and have cable are more likely Fox viewers.

Not all young people are dumb, either, but if they're dumb and have cable, a few will watch Fox and the rest just play video games.

Median age of Fox News viewer is 65. Nothing wrong with that by itself, except that number is also pretty close to their audience's median IQ as well.

Back in the 80's I always watched CNN also, because you didn't have to be in front of the TV at 5pm/6pm or 10pm to find out what happened in the world that day. Also CNN had more international news and more sports coverage that the networks couldn't cover because their time window was so tight. Today, I'll watch CNN during election coverage as I channel surf, that's about it.

Here's a couple of links that should tell us what we both already know--- that "old" isn't referring to you and me. Hell, everybody hopes they live long enough to be advanced in years like us, because in my opinion it sure as hell beats the alternative.

"Old" in the Fox News sense is only derogatory because those are seniors that are too narrow-minded to listen to REAL news that gives a different viewpoint. In other words, if it ain't on Fox, they don't know about it.

I might not know everything, but at least I don'y think that I do. But I do know a lot because I listen to opposing views and think critically.

But Fox News viewers don't know, and they don't know what it is that they don't know.

Here's a couple of links that'll explain better than I did. Besides, it's past my bedtime-you know, since I'm so old and all... ;^O

All the rest - John King, Candy Crowley, Peirs Morgan, Wolf Blitzer, I can't stand a single one of them. And the very worst is the girlie with the British accent who does the new bits during Anderson Coopers' show. I have to turn the channel as soon as she speaks. Ugh, ick, bleack.

Faux Noise is for a deluded and demented populace and they serve their message of division and hate well, misinforming and providing soft interviews for the Teapublicans, there is no audience for a clone.
