The difference could not be more stark, Mitt Romney left emotional scars on those he deemed to be different, while Barack Obama is a man whose scars give him purpose.

According to new information Mitt Romney's lack of compassion for those who were the victim of bullies, did not simply extend to his OWN victims, but also to victims of bullying while he was Governor of Massachusetts:

Mitt Romney clashed with a state commission tasked with helping LGBT youth at risk for bullying and suicide throughout his term as Massachusetts governor over funding and its participation in a pride parade. He eventually abolished the group altogether.

“We remember well what Romney tried to do as governor of Massachusetts and we now we have more info on some of his own attitudes that may have led to his policy actions,” Eliza Byard, executive director of LGBT anti-bullying organization GLSEN, told TPM, drawing a connection with reports that Romney cornered a youth in high school and cut his hair. “If he’s willing to dismiss that incident as ‘hijinks,’ I could understand that he wouldn’t understand at all why this program was so critical.”

This lack sensitivity to the plight of the LGBT community, and other victims of bullying, has enraged many anti-bullying advocates including the mother of Matthew Shepard, a teenager who was killed for being gay, and in whose name the Hate Prevention Act was signed by President Obama:

“While this may seem like an innocent prank to some, it was an act of torment against a child for being different,” Shepard said. Her son Matthew was kidnapped and brutally murdered in 1998. “We expect the people we elect to be leaders in the charge against bullying so that all students are afforded the right to learn and grow in an environment free of fear. This incident calls into question whether Mitt Romney can be an advocate for the nation’s most vulnerable children.”

For those of us who have found Romney to be oddly lacking in human warmth and were originally horrified by the story of him placing a frightened family pet onto the roof of his car while speeding toward a vacation spot, all while the dog defecated all over the roof of the station wagon in terror, we now realize that were simply recognizing the tip of an iceberg of a certain pathology that has now been fully revealed to the American people.

The "I like being able to fire people who provide services to me" guy really does not seem to feel much of a connection to ANYBODY who are not exactly like himself. Which I guess explains why his sons all look like carbon copies of him.

I think we can say with very little doubt that Romney has NEVER had to develop compassion for those who are bullied, or have to do without, because HE has never felt the emotions attached to such circumstances.

But let's contrast that to the man he hopes to defeat in this election cycle.

To do that all we have to do is revisit Barack Obama's time in Indonesia.

Former playmates remember Obama as "Barry Soetoro," or simply "Barry," a chubby little boy very different from the gangly Obama people know today. All say he was teased more than any other kid in the neighborhood--primarily because he was bigger and had black features.

Zulfan Adi was one of the neighborhood kids who teased Obama most mercilessly. He remembers one day when young Obama, a hopelessly upbeat boy who seemed oblivious to the fact that the older kids didn't want him tagging along, followed a group of Adi's friends to a nearby swamp.

"They held his hands and feet and said, `One, two, three,' and threw him in the swamp," recalled Adi, who still lives in the same house where he grew up. "Luckily he could swim. They only did it to Barry."

The other kids would scrap with him sometimes, but because Obama was bigger and better-fed than many of them, he was hard to defeat.

"He was built like a bull. So we'd get three kids together to fight him," recalled Yunaldi Askiar, 45, a former neighborhood friend. "But it was only playing."

The teacher, who still lives in Obama's old neighborhood, remembers that he always sat in the back corner of her classroom.

"His friends called him `Negro,' " Darmawan said.

The term wasn't considered a slur at the time in Indonesia.

Still, all of his teachers at the Catholic school recognized leadership qualities in him. "He would be very helpful with friends. He'd pick them up if they fell down,'' Darmawan recalled. "He would protect the smaller ones."

Is it any wonder President Obama was the one to sign the Matthew Shepard Act into law?

So this is the contrast we see between the two men who want to lead this country for the next four years. One feels a sense of entitlement, and is so lacking in compassion that he claims not to even remember traumatizing a fellow class mate he decided"did not fit in, and the other felt the sting of ridicule and the isolation of those who are identified as "the other."

Everybody keeps saying it is about high gas prices, and a failing economy, but there is absolutely NO evidence that Romney has clue one as to how to deal with those challenges more effectively than our President.

However if the choice comes down to who understands, and EMPATHIZES, with the difficulties facing the American people I think the choice could not be more clear.

But hey, what do I know? After all I am just one of those bleeding heart liberals who cares about the people around me. Sound familiar?

Update: I thought that this was a good place to put the newest ad "Mitt Gets Worse."

The GOP has picked their ultimate representative. Someone who is "entitled" rich, ignorant, selfish, self-centered, a bully, a hypocrite, a liar, hates women, babies and anybody "other" and he's bad at math too.

Meanwhile, we have a proud educated man of mixed race with an obvious happy, loving family, who champions the poor and downtrodden, works hard and understands the meaning of empathy.

Wonder which one of these people represent the values of the United States of America better? Hmmm?

If Romney had any charisma or personality at all, this incident at Cranbrook would likely blow over. However, it brings new incite into the types of "pranks" that were instigated by the fun loving bully. He only cares about his family and his inner circle.

Let's get this part out of the way, just to clarify. I am NOT of the opinion that that this was some sort of youthful prank that got out of hand. It was an assault on a vulnerable person by a sadist who enjoyed it. But there are those who are saying, "Well we all did something we wouldn't want the world to know about when we were kids. What you do in high school doesn't count" unless you're a black kid in a white neighborhood at night wearing a hoody.

I don't believe for one second that Mitt Romney doesn't remember assaulting Lauber. To say that he does not remember is only pointing out that he engaged in such egregious behavior on such a regular basis that he can't remember.

The statement that "I may have gotten carried away. But I didn't realize he was gay." is not EVEN an apology. It still lacks the basic humanity that you'd want to seen in a man who is applying for ANY job position.

How much BETTER would he have looked if he had said, "I had the upper hand over someone and I took advantage of it, and I will never be able to take that back. But I am ashamed of my behavior and I know it was a terrible thing to do. This particular incident made me really look deep inside myself and ask myself what kind of man I want to be. And I know that's not the man I wanted to be. Here's how it changed me..."

"I don't remember it, but may have gotten carried away. I didn't know he was gay." Now let's talk about leading your blind English teacher face first into the exterior doors by telling him you had opened the door for him when you had not and laughing when he smashed his face and fell. Fuck you, Mitt.

The dog on the roof of the car story has been following Romney around since 2007. The reason that it sticks is because it defines him as a man who lacks any emotional connection or feeling with others. Ha ha ha, he hosed off the dog and they kept on going-- with a wet dog on the roof of his car. Inside, there were 5 boys cramped together for 12 hours. His schedule was more important than the feelings of others.

The bullying incident showed Romney attacking another kid with at least 5 or 6 guys on his side. Romney showed leadership all right, leading his fellow classmates in the attack. Five against one isn't a fair fight; it was the only way that Romney could attack the guy.

Even when the friendly folks at Fox asked Romney about the incident, he couldn't remember, he remembered that he didn't think that the guy was gay, and he laughed through the interview. Even now, more than forty years later, he cannot accept responsibility for his actions and turn it into a teaching moment, using it to warn about the dangers of bullying. Given how awkward Romney is himself, I think that he lashed out at others to avoid being teased himself.

  10. I am right with you. The capacity for empathy is so rare in politics nowadays, and practically nonexistent on the right side of the aisle; it's encoded into the right's very ideology.

I'd also like to express my gratitude to you for pointing out something else that seems so obvious to me: there is nothing at all that especially qualifies Romney for dealing with the very real economic problems facing this country. Running a business into the ground in order to extract the last bits of value from it sounds like a horrible model for running an entire economy.

Having grown up African American in a almost totally totally white midwestern town in the 60s and 70s I can honestly say my compassion for "the other" was forged in stone during those years. Basic cluelessness about my culture, disinvites to parties after the parents found out I was black, name calling and even being booted out of higher academic situations because there was no possible way that "a colored person" could be smart or do the work. But I had a relentless mother who basically had to scare the hell out of the school administrators to get me a fair shake. I prevailed.

That said---even after what happened to me and my social situation got better I could never understand those who bullied others. Even at my angriest at what happened to me I would never want anyone to feel that kind of pain. It was always beyond me what the hell was in their hearts. Are bullies made or born? Probably both.

All I know is Mitt Romney had everything economically as a child anyone would ever want. Barack Obama did not. Romney had social power. Obama
did not. Romney was handed an education. Obama was not. Romney had a powerful father. Obama had a strong mother--who was not always with him.

One is a cold plutocrat. The other is a compassionate, empathetic person who also happens to be President of the United States.

Barack Obama Teaches Mitt Romney How Humans React When They Do Something Wrong

...Then, there’s the tried-and-true tit-for-tat strategy, in which Hannity and others dredge up a superficially similar incident, and try to call it even. In this case, it’s another passage from Barack Obama’s 1995 autobiography Dreams From My Father. Here’s the part the right-wingers are using:

'“I’m not her boyfriend!” I shouted. I ran up to Coretta and gave her a slight shove; she staggered back and looked upat me, but still said nothing. “Leave me alone!” I shouted again. And suddenly Coretta was running, faster and faster, until she disappeared from sight. Appreciative laughs rose around me. Then the bell rang, and the teachers appeared to round us back into class.

It was a moment of weakness, to be sure, in which a ten year-old Barack Obama, surrounded by other children who were taunting him and Coretta, succumbed to peer pressure. Here’s how he wound up in that situation:

'There was one other child in my class, though, who reminded me of a different sort of pain. Her name was Coretta, and before my arrival she had been the only black person in our grade. She was plump and dark and didn’t seem tohave many friends. From the first day, we avoided each other but watched from a distance, as if direct contact wouldonly remind us more keenly of our isolation.

Finally, during recess one hot, cloudless day, we found ourselves occupying the same corner of the playground. Idon’t remember what we said to each other, but I remember that suddenly she was chasing me around the jungle gymsand swings. She was laughing brightly, and I teased her and dodged this way and that, until she finally caught me and we fell to the ground breathless.

When I looked up, I saw a group of children, faceless before the glare of the sun, pointing down at us.

“Coretta has a boyfriend! Coretta has a boyfriend!”

The chants grew louder as a few more kids circled us.“She’s not my g-girlfriend,” I stammered. I looked to Coretta for some assistance, but she just stood there looking down at the ground.

“Coretta’s got a boyfriend! Why don’t you kiss her, mister boyfriend?”'

What Hannity, et al, fail to disclose is what Obama wrote immediately following the excerpt they’re flogging:

'For the rest of the afternoon, I was haunted by the look on Coretta’s face just before she had started to run: her disappointment, and the accusation. I wanted to explain to her somehow that it had been nothing personal; I’d just never had a girlfriend before and saw no particular need to have one now. But I didn’t even know if that was true. Iknew only that it was too late for explanations, that somehow I’d been tested and found wanting; and whenever I snuck a glance at Coretta’s desk, I would see her with her head bent over her work, appearing as if nothing had happened, pulled into herself and asking no favors.

My act of betrayal bought me some room from the other children, and like Coretta, I was mostly left alone.'

Completely incorrect analysis. Coming out in favor of same-sex marriage does him no harm. The people who are against same-sex marriage would never have voted for him anyway, and they will not change. The people who are in favor are more energized. People undecided see this as a courageous move on his part, and could vote for him on that basis alone. The Republican "base" will never change their opinions of President Obama, no matter what he does. Same for the idiots at Fox "News." The only thing the Republicans will ever try and do is lie, cheat, and misrepresent the President's record, and hope to steal yet another election by fraudulent means if the vote is close enough.

I’m still waiting for the moment when Romney actually tells the truth about something difficult. He could have said, “You know, I’ve been troubled by the Cranbrook episode for most of my life, and I feel relieved, in a way, that it’s come out now. I did a really stupid and terrible thing. Teenage boys sometimes do such things, and deserve to be punished for them. What I most regret is that I never apologized to John, and won’t be able to now that he’s gone, but let me apologize to his family and friends. Bullying is unacceptable under any circumstances. It is especially unacceptable when prejudice–against race, ethnicity or sexual orientation–is involved. If elected President, I will try to atone for my teenage behavior by campaigning against bullying all across this country. What I did back then should be an example of how not to behave. I hope we can all learn from this. I know that I have.”

Instead, Romney has a near-perfect record of cowardice, obfuscation and downright lies. It shows enormous disrespect for the intelligence of the public.

If YOU pinned a kid down in school and cut his hair with the help of 4 or 5 of your buddies you'd REMEMBER it, on your own, or with their help because they couldn't forget it; the story would be recalled over and over. Perhaps verbally, absolutely mentally.

Romney just isn't man enough to admit that he was a bully and a jerk because he is trying to maintain his newest version of his political self. He just wants to get elected. At the American public's expense. And I don't mean financial expense, entirely.

Jeezum, how stooopid does Romney really think we all are????

He's a liar and a thief, I add thief because he would steal away rights that many Americans, especially women have enjoyed for many, many years.

To all freedom lovers, VOTE... for Obama. FUCK Romney.

...But this story is not going to go away, at least not for the next few days. Because guess where Mitt Romney is scheduled to give a speech tomorrow: Jerry Falwell's Liberty University. It was scheduled some time ago, but in the midst of all this, when Romney keeps saying he wants to talk about the economy, he's going down to Lynchburg to address an audience of evangelicals, where he'll of course have to heap praise on Falwell, one of the most divisive culture-war figures this country has ever seen, and of course he'll have to proclaim his support for "traditional" marriage, and of course he'll have to talk about abortion, and of course he'll come off sounding like someone who has to keep proving to the hard right that he's "severely conservative," in his own immortal words. And this all comes on the heels of the bullying story. It has been one tough week for the guy.

In honor of Mitt's appearance at Liberty, I give you this: quite possibly the best hip-hop anthem about an evangelical university ever produced. Critics everywhere said, "Not nearly as awful as I expected!"

Romney in his usual campaign speech rant this morning, showed more compassion.

His compassion was not towards what he calls his 'highschool pranks', but directed specifically to the "banks and insurance companies" that he spewed in his 'not what he will do for the country' but in his usual 'everything his opponent does wrong'. He ranted that the "President scared the banks and insurance companies" of course in his mishandling of the economy in Romney's eyes.

Really?? The banks and insurance companies?? Yes -- he did specifically say banks and insurance companies referring to the economy and business.

That tells you everything that Romney has full intention of letting the banks and insurance companies do whatever they want to screw the country over and over again.

He also made reference to the trade deals and to basically 'stomp' on China for stealing our jobs.

I have to say I look at it being Romney and his ilk needing to be stomped on because it's them that are sending and opening the companies to places like China all for the 'bottom dollar' to line their own pockets with profit and avoid tax payments.

Whenever Romney says something, flip it 180 and you will realize what it truly means. Harrass China for stealing jobs -- Romney sent and opened companies there for cheap workers and massive profits. Who needs 'stomped' on?? Romney & his ilk.

The compassion shown in his stump speech - to the banks, insurance companies, business. Remember, he does say 'Corporations are people'.

He can't relate to people.I read where his staff was hesitant to let him appear in unscripted situations where he had to interact with people as he is totally at a loss how to respond.I'm thinking sociopath. Also It is much worse to say he has NO memory of this incident. If there were no witnesses to verify his actions you know Mitt would have lied his ass off (again) to deny it.

No, a lot of mormon men are like this. They are only comfortable with their own kind, other mormon men. When you meet one who is comfortable with the gentiles (anyone not mormon) you can bet they worked VERY hard to get that way and that it is an act.
As for dealing with women, they are even worse than uncomfortable, they are loathsome. They can relate to female mormons but gentile women, forget it. When we lived in SLC, they'd send their wives out to talk to me in regards to outside chores (me being female and gentile). It was like the wife had to be a translator or a chaperone. My guess is that they were afraid like Ultra Orthodox Jewish men are of women not their wives or daughters.

Before the stories of poor Seamus and this mean spirited attack on a shy classmate, Romney's aggression and complete lack of compassion has been on display for years in his activities at Bain. Romney’s too-cute apology

Critics of The Washington Post’s story detailing Mitt Romney’s bullying of a classmate nearly 50 years ago may be right: It has little bearing on the man he is today or the president he might become. The incident hardly matters. His handling of it is a different story. It matters.

Romney says he does not remember forcibly cutting the hair of what was purportedly a gay classmate — a bullying so revolting that some of his former classmates not only remember it years later but can’t get it out of their minds. “To this day it troubles me,” said Thomas Buford, the school’s wrestling champion, who had joined Romney in the bullying of their classmate, John Lauber. “What a senseless, stupid, idiotic thing to do.” For Romney, this is not a failure of memory. It is a failure of candor.

Or . . . and this is in some degree even worse, the incident meant so little to Romney that I can only conclude that he lacks empathy. He could bully a classmate at the Cranbrook School – cut off his flop of bleached blond hair – and not give it a moment’s thought. This falls into a different category — the-I-love-to- fire-people category, or the down-with-Planned-Parenthood oath he took during the primary fight. He cannot distinguish between losers and victims. They both leave him cold.

    In either case,

Romney’s troubling reaction to the bullying story

Recklessness is a common side-effect of adolescence — drinking too much, driving too fast. Meanness is another matter. Yes, teenagers are more prone to displaying the primal cruelty of “Mean Girls” and “Lord of the Flies” than their grown-up selves. But the Queen Bees of middle school have an unpleasant tendency to grow into the Real Housewives of Wherever.

Romney’s reported leadership in the episode; his merciless wielding of the scissors to snip off the bleached-blond hair that seemingly so offended his sense of propriety; his continuing cuts in the face of John Lauber’s cries for help — these do not speak well of him. You want to imagine your future president in the role of the wise-for-his-years leader who intervenes to calm the howling mob of his more foolish peers.

But that is not the chief concern with the Romney story. The real problem lies in the adult Romney’s reaction to it — or, more precisely, his non-reaction. Others involved in the episode told The Washington Post’s Jason Horowitz of their continuing shame and guilt. One said he apologized to Lauber years later.

Romney, judging by his own words, seems not to have given the ugly encounter a second thought. His campaign’s initial response was denial. “The stories of fifty years ago seem exaggerated and off base, and Governor Romney has no memory of participating in these incidents,” said spokesman Andrea Saul.

As it turned out, The Post story was so detailed, gripping and well-sourced that brush-off wasn’t going to suffice, so response No. 2 was to issue the classic, conditional quasi-apology. "Back in high school, I did some dumb things, and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that," Romney said in a radio interview. "I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school, and some might have gone too far, and for that I apologize."

Hijinks? Pranks? This was an assault, pure and simple. Romney insists that sexual

The Washington Post Responds To Right-Wing Criticism Over Romney Prep School Piece

The Post reporter, Jason Horowitz, told GQ that the story originated as a look into Mitt Romney’s prep school days — the bullying stories simply came out of that reporting. This was all just talking to people who went to school with him.”

    Whoo hoo! Media brawl:

“What you’re doing here is a typical media trick. You hype up a story, and then you justify the second day coverage of the story by saying people are talking about it. Here’s how romney responded to it. Let’s move on to substantive issues.”

Hall was having none of that. “You didn’t have to accept the invitation to come on,” she said. “You knew what we were going to be discussing.”

Carney tried to protest, but Tamron cut him off. “Hang on. You’re kind of in my house here. The problem is this. The story is out there. You’re right. I am not saying that we should belabor what happened 50 years ago. We’re talking about the response by the campaign and by the Governor. Not just on this issue.”

Carney tried to recover, and lighten up the mood. “You are bringing up a meta story. What is Romney’s response to this other non-story. I’m trying to go meta meta on you and say –”

“You don’t want me to go anything on you,” Hall interjected. “You’re actually irritating me right now. I’m going to be honest with you. Yes, you are. You knew the topics we were going to discuss. You knew them. You agreed.”

“And we are not talking or demeaning — listen, 50 years ago, I was a much tougher kid probably than Mitt Romney was in high school. I’m not talking about the issue of whether he was bullying or not. He said he doesn’t remember. To be fair, I cannot say he does. What I’m asking you about is how the campaign has handled this decision, handled this situation, how he handled the Colorado reporter. How he handled same sex marriage where he said he agrees with gay parents being able to adopt, but he does not agree with same sex marriage. Just the handling of questions on the economy. If you’re not comfortable about that, I am a-okay, but you’re not going to come on and insult me. You won’t come on and insult the network when you knew what you were going to talk about.”

Video Features Mitt Romney Making Case That Dead Straight Parent Is Better Than Live Gay One

...clips of Romney arguing against gay parenting, even as compared with one live and one dead straight parent.

The video is entitled “Mitt Gets Worse,” a reference to the famous “It Gets Better” anti-bullying campaign, and is pegged to gay issues, along with the now-roiling story of Romney’s days as an alleged high school bully. While Romney’s recent anti-marriage, anti-civil union comments are obviously nothing new, there are several clips in which he casts doubt on gay parenting, including one, from a 2004 Congressional hearing, in which he even argues that a dead straight parent is preferable to a live gay one:

'But marriage is not solely about adults. Marriage is also for children. In fact, marriage is principally for the nurturing and development of children. The children of America have the right to have a mother and a father.

Of course, even today, circumstances can take a parent from the home, but the child still has a mother and a father. If the parents are unmarried or divorced, the child can visit each of them. If a mother or a father is deceased, the child can learn about the qualities of their departed parent. His or her psychological development can still be influenced by the contrasting features of both genders.'

So the bully hires another bully to be in charge of his campaign life. This guy sounds like a horrific asshole and clearly has an issue with GLBT individuals.

The bully's bully: Mitt Romney's consigliere Eric Fehrnstrom

"The Herald was like the schoolyard bully," Howie Carr, the legendary Boston brawler who was the paper's top columnist and animating spirit, told me. "We were all about finding people and kicking them when they were down. And then we'd laugh about it." [...]

Fehrnstrom saved his cheap shots for smaller-time Massachusetts pols. When a political activist and gadfly named Althea Garrison was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, the fact that she was transgender was an open secret in Boston political circles. But Fehrnstrom was the first one to put that information into print—"I can remember his glee when he found the birth certificate," says former Herald reporter Robert Connolly—thus bringing a swift end to Garrison's future on Beacon Hill.

"We political writers...were in fact a sort of underworld mob unto ourselves," Fehrnstrom later recalled in a 1999 essay about his journalism career that he wrote for Boston magazine. "We figured most pols were overdue in their accounts to the devil anyway." He added: "In my trade, politics was never personal. Hell, people were rarely people—they were ducks in a shooting gallery."

Mitt Romney, childhood actions and character

...It is confirmation that Romney isn't just an insufferable dick today, but that he has always been that way. Had Romney responded to the bullying revelations with a heartfelt apology, admitted that his behavior was wrong, and called for an end to bullying in schools today, that would show the kind of maturation and growth in character that would render the issue into a positive for him. But of course, he didn't. He just doesn't think he ever did anything wrong.

So it's not so much his behavior as a child that's in question, it's his lack of maturation and growth as a human being.

It's relevant because we see the exact same Romney on the campaign trail—mocking the ponchos of NASCAR fans, laughing at the cookies proud Ohioans Pennsylvanians had laid out for him at a picnic, talking about how much he didn't give a shit about the poor, torturing poor Seamus on family vacations, "joking" to unemployed people how he—rich asshole—was also "unemployed," laughing about Michigan auto workers losing their jobs, bragging about how much he loves to fire people, etc.

He's a dick. We suspected, sure, but now we know that he always was one. That he doesn't remember the incident is just more evidence that for him, being a bully was normal, average, status quo behavior for him. And no one remembers an average day.

    Romney's Google Problem

It's been about 36 hours since the story of Romney and his sordid past as a bully and serial abuser came to light in the Washington Post. I knew when I first saw this starting to trend on twitter that this would be a BFD and that it would "leave a mark".

36 hours later the story is still growing stronger as more of Romney's former classmates come forward with their memories of this time. Romney made no real friends as a teen, so it seems, and that's going to haunt him.

Schadenfreude is such a wonderful thing, must be in my German genes (thanks mom).

Anyway, back on track, I want to bring up Romney's new Google problem. Right now, "Mitt Romney bully" is either the third of fourth hottest trending search on the google. It's been moving up and down. That tells us the a lot of people are dialed into this issue.

And, what is worse, "bully" is now the number one suggestion when you type "Mitt Romney" into the google search window in your browser (because of said hot trending). This will put this issue front and center in millions of people's browsers.

...The story about Romney's merciless cruelty, which he says he doesn't even remember and writes off as a harmless, boys-will-be-boys prank, is not an aberration; it is part of his whole life story. He went from being the big bully in his high school, to being the cavalier dad who made the family dog ride on top of the car even when it was making him sick, to being the "vulture capitalist" at Bain Capital, loading up companies with debt for short term profit and doing mass layoffs before selling off the companies. Now he is the presidential candidate advocating for the Ryan budget, the single cruelest policy document I have ever seen in 30+ years of politics.

...The biggest irony to all this is that Romney and his new buddy Paul Ryan extol their faith as devout Christians. The founder of that religion was a person named Jesus of Nazareth. He is quoted in that religious tradition's scripture as saying things like, "Blessed are the merciful: they shall have mercy shown them," and, "in so far as you neglected to help one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me." Not exactly the values one thinks of when hearing about bullies -- or budgets -- that pick on the weak.

Mitt Romney has a streak of cruelty in him that allowed him to torment someone different than him in high school, and has a streak of cruelty in him now that allows him to write off such cruelty as a harmless childhood "prank." What is worse for all of us, if he were to become president, is that this cruelty is reflected in his policy ideas. We shouldn't have Lord of the Flies become our national values system.

I guess the good news for Romney in the bullying story is that it will help with solidifying Republican base voters who cheer the idea of people dying because of lack of health insurance, boo a gay soldier, and laugh and applaud in delight when people say things like "in nature, the lions eat the weak." Another plus: maybe animal lovers will think "hey, he's not especially cruel to dogs, he treats everybody that way." But the American public should not be surprised by this story, because Romney and his Republican party's entire philosophy is straight out of Lord of the Flies.

Romney backs away from gay adoptions

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday backed away from his support of adoptions by same-sex couples, saying that he simply "acknowledges" the legality of such adoptions in many states.

A day earlier, Romney, in an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto, had indicated that while he does not support same-sex marriage, he considers the adoption of children by same-sex couples a "right."

He said on Thursday: "And if two people of the same gender want to live together, want to have a loving relationship, or even to adopt a child -- in my state individuals of the same sex were able to adopt children. In my view, that's something that people have a right to do. But to call that marriage is something that in my view is a departure from the real meaning of that word."

    But then on Friday

It shows you the path from Cranbrook to now and how these characteristics are sticking to Romney throughout his life like Crazy Glue.

Mitt Romney's haircut story was unearthed by a reporter who did a lot of research

...Not a single one of the people Horowitz interviewed contacted him before he began working on the story. Not a piece of information was given. All of it was found out through reporting.

And that paragraph at the top of the story is what makes that self-evident. And it's the reason, as much as the predictable sources are saying the story is "cracking" under pressure from "investigations" being conducted and "fact-checking" missions by right-wing blogs and self-professed Internet truth-monkeys, why this story will be in every credible biography of Mitt Romney that's ever written.

"They're all dispersed around the country," said Horowitz, of the Romney classmates he interviewed. "I found all the kids who were in his grade or class and the years around it. Basically it was a ton of phone calls. I was interested in everyone's own experiences at the school. That's where the richness of the story seemed to be, in people describing what it was like for them at Cranbrook.

"That's how I found out about the dining rooms, that they had cloth napkins. Everyone kind of remembered different things vividly. So I went to Cranbrook myself cause I wanted to see it. It's beautiful by the way."

While he was reporting, he let the reporting set the agenda instead of the reverse.

Horowitz said some people he talked to were more attuned to the election-cycle news than others.

"Some people had no idea what the [Romney] campaign was saying [about Romney's high-school days]. Other people were more kind of tuned into what the campaign was saying. And some were in full agreement. They said, yeah, that's the real Mitt. He was a total ham, and great to be around. This jocular fun guy, but there was also a real edge to him.

"So some people were aware of the campaign's portrayal of him, and it didn't wash with their memory of him. Other people were also aware and they said it did wash, and others just had no idea what the campaign was up to."

Horowitz was "pretty deep" into his two-to-three weeks of reporting, he said, when he first heard the story of the haircut.

"I had already had, I would say, more than a dozen conversations with people and I called just another guy on the list, and he told me about it," he told me.

"And so after that, not to be too much about sausage-making and stuff, everybody I talked to, I wanted to know just as much about the place as I did before, but I also tried to get a sense of who else knew about this incident."

"I had a sense that this might be a talked about a lot, not because it was sensational but because I think it says something," Horowitz said. "And also, we led with that detail."

"Because of the nature of the incident, I needed for myself to be obviously 100 percent sure. And I guess you could have gone with a couple of guys on the record, but I just wanted to know, I wanted to make sure for myself that we had independent sources that this thing happened the way people said it happened and I wanted to make sure that it was right, and I also wanted to—it was the sort of thing that I needed people to put their name to.

"It was important for me to have that many people on the record talking about this,

Why the Romney bully story matters

He did not say he remembered the incident with horror. He did not say he doesn't remember the incident, but that bullying must not be tolerated and that vulnerable students everywhere should know he stands with them. Instead, Romney did what he seems to do best in tight spots: He hedged.

“Back in high school, I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that,” Mr. Romney said. “I participated in a lot of high jinks and pranks during high school and some might have gone too far and for that, I apologize.”

The "dumb thing" in question was an incident in which he and his friends pinned down a misfit kid who was presumed to be gay. As the boy cried, Romney cut off his hair. Romney's fellow bullies told the Washington Post that the "vicious" attack on a classmate considered "easy pickins" has haunted them ever since. Romney says he doesn't remember it.

Maybe that’s true (a;though it seems doubtful). But according to a classmate who apologized to the victim years later, the terrifying memory stuck with him long into adulthood.

In September 2010, after a spate of suicides by young victims of bullying, columnist Dan Savage started the "It Gets Better Project," which uses user-created videos to let young LGBT people know that no matter what challenges they encounter as teens, they can find happiness and acceptance at some point in adulthood.

Today, Mitt Romney sent those same kids a less helpful message: that the students bullying them without consequences today will still be evading responsibility when they are powerful adults.

This message seems more than accidental coming on the heels of another recent Romney saga -- the resignation of his foreign policy spokesman Richard Grenell, who is openly gay, after Romney failed to stand by him publicly in the face of an anti-gay onslaught.

One can only hope these were two isolated cases of bad public relations, not a window into what's actually in Romney's heart, or a hint of how he really treats those more vulnerable than he.

As a father, businessman, former governor and potential president, Romney owes it to all kids -- the bullies and the bullied alike -- to be a better leader.

To illustrate Mr. Romney’s lighter side, the Post presented tales several of his past pranks including a strange hazing incident where Mr. Romney and his college buddies forcibly shaved students of a rival school and a time he terrified a friend with a fake home invasion.

Mr. Romney’s shaving incident, which his father, former Michigan Governor George Romney revealed in a 1970 speech, occurred while he was a student at Stanford. The elder Mr. Romney said Mitt and his friends lured students from the University of California into a trap where they “shaved their heads and painted them red.”

George Keele, who served as a Mormon missionary in France with Mr. Romney in the 1960′s, described the home invasion prank to the Post:

“One night in Bayonne, in southern France, Keele answered a knock on the door and saw two men, their faces hidden by sheets, ordering him in French to put his hands behind his back, turn around and not utter a word. Keele fled out the back door only to hear Romney, his mask removed, laughing uproariously in the house.”

Absolutely it says something about Romney's character. He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he wasn't a very physically bold person as he did not go for the football team and he hid out in France during the Vietnam war, but one thing that really stands out is when he's with a gang of people he suddenly becomes a mean bully against those weaker than him, from walking a blind man into a closed door, to cutting off the hair of a classmate who seemed to stand out, from disobeying police officers to security guards, to utterly destroying factories and jobs of middle class americans while flashing that picture of him with a handful of hundred dollar bills.

The narrative is one of a privileged lad with a bit of a mean streak which led to his time as a young man and full on violent actions against weaker people, and as an adult where he took people's livelihoods away to enrich his own coffers. This brings us up to the present, where he shows zero backbone against people such as Rush Limbaugh or any right wing radio host, who could tear him to shreds. He does not say a word against them. He also exhibits a severe lack of empathy for people who are less fortunate than he is that live in America, so what you would have would be a president who would bully the American people with austerity plans and then be a coward against our real enemies.

The election of Willard "Mitt" Romney would be an unmitigated disaster in my opinion. We should never elect passive-aggressive beta males to the most powerful position in the world, that of the Presidency of the United States.

This isn't going to go away. Romney's going to get asked about it, again and again.

And he's already boxed himself in, horribly. That initial response of inappropriate nervous laughter was bad enough - at least a bit crazy and certainly a sign of disconnection. That second response of claiming he doesn't remember, that doesn't cut it, and it's going to get worked over by every reporter who gets face time with him, again and again and again and again, in hopes of the reporter's ultimate dream: that that reporter will be the one who causes it to come crumbling down.

This is going to feature in his Wikipedia entry in much the same way that his father's "I was brainwashed" answer features in George Romney's Wikipedia entry - and undoubtedly even more. Mitt Romney doesn't just have an electability problem anymore: now he's got a history problem.

High school years are extremely formative. It was only a few short years to his Harvard period, and the direction he took toward Bain and that iconic 'rich guys' photo. This incident says quite a lot about how he became who he is. To 'forget' it suggests more that he cares less about some people, which to many voters signals that he may not care about them. Compare with the reason we know about Barack Obama's past - he told us. We didn't find out from friends who were so torn up in their souls that they couldn't keep this secret inside any longer. And we know how each episode ended - Obama grew and matured as a person who cared about people. Romney became ever more callous, finding memories about people he feels are insignificant as disposable and worthless of consideration. His throw away generic apology is as useless as the victim's family - still in denial about their son's sexual orientation. Not too uncommon in upper crust prep school type families.

The best predictor of future behavior is one's past behavior. Romeny bothers me because he claims to not have been aware that the guy was gay. Gay or not, does charging down a hall, followed by the high school wrestler and three others to hold down the blonde guy, with a weapon (Scissors) in hand, then cutting off the kids hair is beyond bullying.
I would imagine the guy was terrified and his head most probably was moving as he cried out for help, while the bully clipped his hair.

This is beyond the pale, and something one wouldn't forget. But he could get away with it and be big man on campus.

Add in leading a blind professor into a closed door.

Anyone want him "negotiating" with foreign leaders?

Obama was a child, he learned from his mistakes and went the extra step to set things right because he realized the consequences to his actions.

    Empathy, My President has it.

    Romney? Not so much.

This is going to haunt him for the next six months, and by the looks of things, he can't figure out all it takes is to own it. How anyone can vote for him is beyond me, everything's a joke to him.

A LANDSLIDE LOSS THAT IT WILL CERTAINLY BE...LOL

  63. Romney hates gays. MOST OF YOU HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE OF LIFE IN 1965 -- Homosexuals were put into mental institutions for being mentally ill in those days.

Obama was bullied but was a saint that walked on water, and picked up little kids running to their rescue.

Romney was pampered, although he had no money until he worked his butt off and MADE IT - UNLIKE OBAMA WHO WAS HANDED 5 MILLION FOR A BOOK HE HASN'T WRITTEN YET JUST BEFORE HE TOOK OFFICE AND ANOTHER MILLION FOR A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE (WHAT A JOKE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE)....

Obama was rich -- his step-daddy was very rich -- his real daddy a communist ...

    His maternal grandparents were communist.

His professors he gravitated to were communist. His clubs were communist (but no one can get his school records can they?)...

Most of his Czars including his green energy czar are communist ...

He began his career in the living room of Bill Ayers a communist and a terrorist who bombed the Pentagon and got off on a technicality.

Obama began his career on May 5th -- Karl Marx's birthday...

His composite girlfriend is named Julia -- also part of the name of one of Karl Marx's daughters.

Obama's church had an openly gay youth minister who the church members said Obama was having an affair with (and not to mention he married a masculine looking woman) who was murdered just a couple of days before Obama began his career (SURPRISE!)....

Obama sat 20 years in a BLACK LIBERATION CHURCH with a radical preacher spouting GOD DAMN AMERICA but didn't hear a word of it (was he snoring for 20 years like Rip Van Winkle and awoke with a long wise beard?)

Oh, yeah, OBAMA LOVES US ALL...and little dogs too! Very tasty little dogs ...
