Republicans may be purposefully sabotaging economic recovery for political gain. Gee ya think?

Threat Level: Orange.
Courtesy of the AP:

Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama's re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.

The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation's borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, continues to reject higher tax rates, which Democrats demand from the wealthy.

That led Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to say Boehner is virtually assuring another debt-ceiling crisis as bad or worse than the one that shook financial markets nine months ago.

"The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer's debacle that nearly brought down our economy," Schumer said in a statement. In an interview, Schumer added: "I hope that the speaker is not doing this because he doesn't want to see the economy improve, because what he said will certainly rattle the markets."

Boehner responded in a statement: "Republicans have passed nearly 30 bills that would help small businesses create jobs and we are waiting on Senate Democrats to vote on these common-sense measures. The failure to act on these jobs bills, as well as our crushing debt burden, is undermining economic growth and job creation."

Democrats say Republicans loaded their jobs bills with provisions certain to doom them in the Senate, such as restrictions on unions and on regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency.

Regardless of whether Schumer's suspicions are right, there's evidence that unceasing partisan gridlock and the prospect of big tax increases and spending cuts in January are causing some companies to postpone expansions. Even small economic slowdowns are bad news for Obama, who is seeking re-election amid high unemployment.

I think there is virtually NO doubt that the Republicans are going to  drag their feet on, or even openly sabotage, any attempts to improve this economy before the election in 2012.

They literally have no other platform to run on other than the idea that this President cannot bring jobs back, or improve the average American's quality of life, and sadly they are in a potion to make that a reality.

Then it just becomes a game of who can frame the debate over whose responsible for this failure the best.

The Republicans will say that this is due to President Obama's lack of experience and "anti-business" policies, and the Democrats will point out that the Republicans have spent virtually no time attempting to push through legislation to improve job growth, and have instead focused on taking away woman's rights, fighting the Affordable Care Act, and undermining the President's efforts to revitalize the economy. And even though we progressive have proof for our side of the argument, it may not matter, because of the Citizen's United ruling, which will allow wealthy SuperPACs to spend unlimited amounts of money, will give the GOP the edge in getting THEIR version of reality into the living rooms of the barely attentive voters.

But the TRULY sad thing is that this next election will solve nothing if the Republicans retain control of the House, or gain control of the Senate as well.  Then we will see four more years of total gridlock while the country suffers and the GOP points their fingers of blame at the black man in the White House.

Like I said before, we are in the middle of a hostage situation. And the key to our shackles lies in our ability to elect enough Democrats to take back the House and retain the Senate. THEN my friends we will start to finally see progress.

And that Whitman dipshit thought she could run california the same way. She spent like $140 million of her own dough and the CA voters still told her to get lost. Her Bain association with Mean Mitt is gonna hurt.

That was an excellent article. I knew about the White Horse Prophecy and I knew about Romney being called the "One and Mighty" when he was at college...but I had no idea that they were boasting about how they would pull strings.

For more interesting info on Romney's Mormonism, Google Eliza Dushku's Mother and Mitt Romney...Or read this article. The highlight:

"Then in 1994, when Romney was running for the Senate, he came out in favor of choice for women — which was surprising to me. I was pleased and called, asking to see him. I told him I suspected that we had our differences, but that maybe I could work with him if he’d come to a really good position on women and childbirth.

And he said – Yes, come to my office.

I went to his office and I congratulated him on taking a pro-choice position. And his response was – Well they told me in Salt Lake City I could take this position, and in fact I probably had to in order to win in a liberal state like Massachusetts."

The only way to ensure this country succeeds is to elect enough Democrat's or Independent's to the House and Senate.

The Republican's can and will destroy the middle class to assure that the rich get all the breaks and the poor carry the load.

Sad that a country as great as ours is lagging behind the rest of the world, due to the corporations running the government.

  4. So the Republicans have been sabotaging the President, the economy and our country and the AP reporters are just figuring it out now? And funny how the "librul media" always has 4 Republican politicians for every 1 Democratic politician invited to be on the Sunday talk shows........

That is indeed the key, Gryphen - to elect enough Dems to take back the House and keep the Senate while re-electing President Obama.

It is the ONLY way this country will get back on its feet and truly move forward.

When I hear the Teaparty folks say we need to "take back our country", I hear nothing
      but the Koch brother's lies

When liberals say we need to re-elect President Obama, I may agree, in the short term, but not for the reasons that most have in mind.

Getting our country "back on it's feet" is impossible regardless of who gets elected, given the huge issues dividing American voters and the Congress

Look, I'm just guessing, but I estimate that %70 of our house & senate folks are more concerned about their careers and lobbyists' money than their sworn duties to represent their districts.

I would agree that having the Democrats keep the Senate is a good idea, but only to stop the militant theocrats and fundamentalist Christians from blocking court nominees, and to thwart their war on women

Until this country publicly funds ALL Federal elections, we will continue to have the multi-national corporations choosing their favorite puppets to elect to high office.

Until we have tax codes that require all income to be paid at equitable rates, we will slide downward toward financial ruin.
It's intolerable that Warren Buffet pays less percentage of tax than his secretary.

The problems we collectively face as a nation are vast, and like the Titanic, will take many decades to address, regardless of who may get elected.

It has been their announced goal since President Obama's inauguration. Remember McConnell's vow to make President Obama a one-term president. The Republicans in Congress are nothing less than traitors, to a person.

The litany of the current House of Representatives' actions on the floor of Congress (the site that was referred to here last week with the calendar) is proof of the refusal of Republicans to help President Obama get the country recovered from the mess left behind by two terms of a Republican presidency!

The title including "... May Be Intentionally..." implies the possibility of doubt existing where there is none.

Members of the GOP, top to bottom, are merely hired guns to obstruct regulation of the entities owned by the CIC (Corporate Industrial Complex).

In my lifetime the Speaker of the House was most often a major, sometimes towering, figure in government and in history. This guy falls so short. I do think he and President Obama had some deals that fell apart when he went back to try and sell them to his Tea Party dominated caucus. But he is such a light weight in comparison to his predecessors. Lose the tan. Quit cigarettes. I did, you can too. And put the bottle down. And be a leader. He is not worthy of the title and the responsibilities.

Taking back the House would be enormous. It's up to us to focus on those races. GET INVOLVED FOLKS.

Whether you loved LBJ or hated him. As a Congressional leader, he was no whimp.

He had worked to amass power and influence make friends and horse trade and he knew when and how to use it.

The Great Pumpkin Head just doesn't know how to amass power or wield it. Just being an apparatchik and flunkey for a couple of decades does not a leader make.

How many times does it take for the Republican leadership to say they will do anything to make Obama fail, before the Democrats finally realize that they not only mean it they have being doing just that for over three years now?

How many times do you have to hit a jackass in the head with a two by four to get its attention?

The first question should be the joke line but the latter is the one that is.

Personally, having lived in the real 'murka for 60+ years, mostly in Texas, I believe the Republicans capable any just about any nastiness you could think of.

Way back when there was the movie "The Mouse That Roared." about a fictional Lichtenstein type country that decided to solve its economic problems by declaring war on the US and letting it win. (Keep in mind this was still when things like the Marshall Plan was still very much in peoples menory.)

So I suggest that if the Repubs win and put the US into Romneyruptcy that the citizens of the northern states attack Canada and then surrender their governments to Canada for annexing. That could be followed by the next tier of US states etc.

May be purposefully sabotaging the economy? You think there's virtually no doubt of this? You're treading awfully lightly, Gryphen. That's not like you.

McConnell's stated number one goal was to make President Obama a one-term president. He admittedly held the debt ceiling hostage. 15 top level republicans plotted to sabotage President Obama's presidency on the night of his inauguration. How much more proof do you or Schumer need before you absolutely have no doubt they're sabotaging the economy?

I have a Teahadist neighbor who is running for County Clerk. When I asked him why he would want to work for the local government, he replied, because the Clerk certifies the election results. The look on his face was priceless when I reminded him that I am a liberal, and that he wouldn't make it a week in office - since he would have to snitch on all of his neighbors who have disregarded county building ordinances. It had never occurred to him that the oath for county office included honoring federal, state and county laws.

So the Teatard plan may be to keep running for local offices to influence the elections in 2014 and beyond.

In the meantime, he has been removing the signs he made by hand to advertise his candidacy. I suppose he would rather have peace with his neighbors than fix election results.

I agree with Anon 4:41 just above -- the Rethugs have manipulated the markets including stocks, oil, pensions, etc; they've sat on their hands and the trillions of dollars instead of hiring; fired and laid off people in order to claim 'victimhood' -- as Anon said -- purposely sabotaging the economy I say since Election Day 2008.

You can count on Koch Bros. et al -- the slimepits of the party together with the leaders of the Bagger organizations and corporations and FreedomWorks and the stunned moron Dick Armey -- you know -- that slime bucket that only his hairdresser knows for sure!! The list is just too long to set out -- but you already know who they all are.

My father told me today that he was ceasing to pay attention to politics; it was depressing him. I reminded him that I did the same thing in the mid 90's. We both agreed that regardless of the political environment that our lives have not changed one bit. We both then agreed that we can pay attention if we choose, but realize that life goes on same as always regardless of Congress or POTUS. Life was the same under Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton, Bush 2 and Obama. It took us both 5 entire administrations to realize that none of it really matters.

I wasn't trying to spread hopelessness, just the opposite. We found that our investments did not change much under any administration. We lived life basically the same, day to day, as we do under Obama, as we did under Reagan. My father invests for our entire family, and I guess what I'm saying is that has not changed for us. Life goes on. My father is very savvy in his investment strategy for our family so politics is something that gets us riled up and in a partisan mindset regarding social issues, but financially it doesn't matter who is in office. Sorry if I misled you.

I loved the tears when he got his "man gavel" from Nancy Pelosi. How she managed not to laugh out loud is beyond me.
