Good night my friends, but before you sleep, do you want to see something beautiful?

View from the ISS at Night from Knate Myers on Vimeo.

Every frame in this video is a photograph taken from the International Space Station. All credit goes to the crews on board the ISS. (If video does not play click here.)

That is quite an amazing planet we live on, isn't it?

“Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light‐years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual. So are our emotions in the presence of great art or music or literature, or acts of exemplary selfless courage such as those of Mohandas Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. The notion that science and spirituality are somehow mutually exclusive does a disservice to both.”

― Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark

You just can't think happy thoughts can you? Happiness is like your cryptonite. Always cutting down. I hope you don't have children. I'd hate for them to be brainwashed.

Earlier today I was reading about the new laws in LA that will allow school vouchers to be used at private and religious schools. The rightwingers are beside themselves with plans to remake Louisiana education into their own little government funded religion-fest. The comments read like a bad SNL skit and the most popular idea is to remove all that silly science nonsense from the curriculum and replace it with the REAL story of creationism. And advanced math might also have to go because, apparently, the founding fathers ONLY wanted public education so that we could all learn to read the bible. I thought at times I was reading something from the Onion.

Sadly, in about 10 years, the children of LA will have no knowledge of the amazing things that science can teach us about our universe and about ourselves. They will be claiming that the early folks rode on dinosaurs when the earth was created 6,000 years ago and be able to explain exactly what was created on which of the 6 days.

Good luck finding businesses that want to move to LA and good luck to those poor, misguided children when they start looking for colleges and jobs.

Sadly, we can see less and less of this from Earth's surface because of our sloppy, energy inefficient lighting practices. See http://www.darksky.org for more.

Thank you for that! This world is beautiful in spite of the hate and bigotry from those who don't respect the wonderful diversity of all of the human race.

It's nice to take a moment to reflect on what's right here on Earth.

Her jacket is awful. Her wig is the worst one I have seen yet. What is wrong with the woman? Doesn't she have any mirrors in her house? I could only bear to listen to two minutes of her stupidity.

To start your day with some 'cuteness', here's video of various adorable pups.

Note that when one vid ends then another starts.
    Definitely 'kid' friendly!!!

Thanks Anon 11:10! I love those videos of puppies. I was laughing so hard my stomach hurt! My Bichon Frise has 4 10-week old puppies and they are so adorable, cute, and funny! No joy like puppy joy. Is it a coincidence the dog is god spelled backwards?

Thanks, Gryphen, for another inspiring video. I do see the compatibility between science (or nature) and spirituality.

....By the way, why are people commenting about Palin on this post?! It is NOT about her! It is about something so extremely much bigger and more important than her or any other politician...that is, this amazing planet, and our amazing space. Can't you commenters keep your comments on topic to what Grypen makes the effort to share with us?

That film was beautiful. I always go to "apod.nasa.gov" in the morning to be reassured and made happy for, well, at least a few minutes. Planet Earth is so stunningly beautiful and I am thrilled to be alive in an era when we can see so much more of what is around us.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could spend some time looking at this place where we live and realize how fragile it is and decide to stop hating people because of their differences and to work together to protect what we have - a magnificent planet in an infinite sea of stars.

Oh yes - there is a vast difference between spirituality and believing in nonsense.

Understanding that it is better to strive towards a sense of justice and beauty is much different than believing that Moses could do magic.
