Massacre erupts during midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises." Reports so far indicate 50 gunshot victims, 12 fatalities. Update!

Courtesy of Mercury News:

About 50 people were shot — 12 fatally — early Friday when a gunman opened fire at an Aurora movie theater during a premiere showing of the new Batman movie.

A 24-year-old man in is custody and an apartment building in north Aurora connected to the suspect was being evacuated and searched for possible explosives, according to Police Chief Dan Oates.

Several federal sources identified the suspect as James Holmes, NBC reported.

Ten people died at the scene and two others died at hospitals. Many of the injured were critically injured.

Around 12:39 a.m., police received multiple reports of the shooting at the theater complex, located at 14300 E. Alameda Ave., and arrived minutes later, according to Aurora police.

Police say the suspect "appeared" at the front of one of the theaters showing "The Dark Knight Rises." Witnesses told The Post he entered through an emergency exit at the right front of the Theater 9 less than 10 minutes into the film.

The suspect then threw some type of explosive and started shooting into the packed theater.

The man had a rifle, a handgun and a gas mask when police arrested him. At this time, police have no evidence that there are any additional suspects involved in the shooting.

The bodies of the 10 people who died at the theater remain at the scene while police continue to investigate. Police previously stated that 14 people were killed.

This is still a breaking story so details are still coming in. They have identified the suspect however.

Courtesy of Yahoo News:

The young man who is in custody after allegedly gunning down 12 people in a mass shooting spree overnight in Aurora, Colorado has been identified as local resident James Holmes, according to federal authorities.

A San Diego woman who identified herself as James Holmes' mother told ABC News she had awoken unaware of the shooting and had not yet been contacted by authorities. She immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.

"You have the right person," she said, apparently speaking on gut instinct. "I need to call the police... I need to fly out to Colorado."

Local news reports showed aerial video of police cautiously searching Holmes' apartment, some five miles from the Century Aurora 16 theater, as the suspect reportedly told police he had explosives inside.

There are reports that this guy may have been dressed up to resemble the character of "Bane" in the movie, but that is mostly speculation at this point.

What is not speculation is that this lunatic had access to multiple assault weapons, at least one tear gas grenade, and possibly a houseful of explosives.  Without those items he would have been a fairly harmless kook,

But hey, let's not forget to defend our 2nd amendments rights.  These days there is nothing more important than those.

Update: Apparently this individual has booby trapped his home.

I have heard of the possible Tea Party affiliation, but right now I am  waiting for further confirmation before giving it too much credence.

Update 2: The killer was not channeling the character Bane, he thought he was the Joker:

According to police sources, Holmes told the officers arresting him that he was "The Joker," referring to the villain in the second installment of the Batman movie trilogy, "The Dark Knight." He also warned police that he had booby-trapped his apartment, leading officers to evacuate the Aurora apartment building.

It was the first thing that went through my mind as well. Limbaugh has many unhinged listeners and this guy might have been waiting for Rush to speak to him personally. Holmes is obviously a nut, no one else pulls this kind of massacre without being totally off their rocker. It's the same thing as when the man killed the abortion provider due to O'Reilly's comments.
A lot of people take stuff bombastic media morons say seriously and some are crazy enough to think they are being spoken to directly. Look at how silly Kristol was about Palin, tingle up the leg, she was winking at me?

These assault mega round weapons have no place in society.....how many dead will it take? There was a law banning them, and they let it expire for some reason. You know Palin and the NRA are gonna be in full attack mode with their motto, People kill people, not guns....bullshit. There is no reason to have these military grade guns legal..none. I hope Obama addresses this next term. I can imagine the horror Gaby Giffords is feeling hearing this account...how many years will this go on.

Yeah, yeah, people kill, guns don't -- except that if people couldn't buy assault rifles and other military weapons, it would be a heck of a lot harder for people to kill other people. The 2nd amendment was put into place before we had police forces, sheriffs, etc. The guns available at the time were much less lethal, as well. The NRA needs to be stripped of its power.

Exactly, MotorCity. One of my friends asked me how the guy could have gotten the hardware and clothes to pull this off. i said anywhere they sell police stuff or military hardware. When my daughter was interested in joining a police force in college (she was a police cadet in the university's police department) they gave us information as to where to buy the guns, jackets, belts, tools, etc. for the best possible price. All we needed was a credit card.

I don't understand the love affair with guns, but I support the right to have them, provided they are licensed and registered. Just like my late great 20 pound dog. However, nobody other than active duty military needs military grade weapons.

My condolences to the families of the deceased. And my sympathies to everyone who was in the theatre, for the shock and trauma they suffered.

If this guys mother really did say that the police had the right guy, that tells me he's been a disaster just waiting to happen. I don't know how we deal with people like that.

My brother is a cop and never goes anywhere without a gun strapped to his ankle holster. I made fun of him for arming himself when he took his 2-yo to the mall for photos, and he immediately reeled off several stories about off-duty cops who were in malls when shootings broke out and were able to stop things quickly bc of their personal weapons.

BUT police officers are trained to react quickly, to assess risk to other parties before shooting, and to shoot accurately to take out a target. My brother is head of a SWAT team and has extensive training and experience in handling a live shooter in a crowded place. So if he, or someone like him, were in that theater, yes, he would be well qualified to fire at the shooter. And he might. But he might not, depending on the possible collateral damage and other factors I don't even know. And I wouldn't second-guess him for either decision, because I know he knows what he's doing.

There are a lot of other random (to use the troll's favorite word) people walking around with guns who have maybe been to the firing range once or twice (*cough* Sarah Palin, *cough* Bristol Palin) and who overestimate their skill. Those are the people who could certainly jeopardize others in the cross-fire.

Plus, word is that this guy was pretty much in head-to-toe Kevlar. Again, a trained cop probably knows or can quickly determine the best way to neutralize the threat. Joe (the Plumber?) Schmoe NRA member likely does not.

      Just my two cents.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous11:41 AM

A trained cop wouldn't have been able to do much in that situation: darkness, panic, closed theater, hundreds of people and all against a heavily armed and armored opponent.

Stop me if you've heard this news flash once or twice before, but Rush Limbaugh got it gloriously wrong. On Tuesday, the Porcine One took to the airwaves to froth about the coincidence—no, wait, there's no such thing in Limbaugh-land—that the villain of The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane, a homophone for "Bain." Plainly, this was a case of Romney-bashing propaganda by a Hollywood nefariously in league with the White House.

"You may think it's ridiculous," Rush said stoutly, locking a barn door through which whole herds of ponies have fled over the years. "I'm just telling you this is the kind of stuff the Obama campaign is lining up. The kind of people who would draw this comparison are the kind of people they are campaigning to."

Even by his standards, this was gaga enough that Limbaugh was in full-on fudging mode by Wednesday. "I didn't say there was a conspiracy theory," he said. "I said the Democrats are going to use it." But if they try—and at least one Dem flack (Chris Lahane) fairly witlessly has—I wish 'em luck. The real joke, as Rush might have learned if he'd crammed his posterior into a theater seat before venting, is that The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most deeply conservative movies to come out of Hollywood in years.

Understand, I mean "conservative" in the traditional, more or less honorable sense that Rush and his fellow napalm-eaters have done their best to make obsolete. To a large extent, that's built right into the source material. To much grimmer effect than his rival, Superman—all that sunshine palaver about "the American way," feh—Batman has always been the guardian of a social order against chaos, with a pretty dour view of unbridled license and plenty of pessimism about humanity's prospects for improvement. That may be why the 1960s TV version boomers loved had to be campy, since presenting Batman with his dignity intact would have left Dragnet's Jack Webb looking like some damned hippie-lover. But Christopher Nolan, the director of TDKR and its two predecessors—2005's Batman Begins and 2008's mega-smash The Dark Knight—has hardly been shy about bringing out the saga's implicit political philosophy.

If The Dark Knight ended up as the ultimate pop-culture reflection of George W. Bush's Global War on Terror—and it did, from the way audiences couldn't help seeing Heath Ledger's destruction-bent Joker as Osama bin Laden to Batman's harsh "the ends justify the means" moral ambiguity—the new movie ups the ante, in a way. Lacking even the Joker's twisted charisma, Tom Hardy's Bane is about as far from a Romney stand-in as could be imagined; he's a sullen, lower-depths menace, with a musculature seldom encountered outside Soviet-era sculpture gardens. Though his ultimate plan is to blow up Gotham—c'mon, they all want to blow up Gotham—he means to torment a captive Batman first by turning the city into a stew of every conservative's worst nightmares.

It's not exactly an accident that the first place Bane wreaks havoc is the Stock Exchange.

...In other words, those who ought to be most offended by the movie are Occupy Wall Street's 99 percenters and their sympathizers. Thanks to a trailer that included Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman, taunting Bruce Wayne to ultra-topical effect—"There's a storm coming, Mr. Wayne. … When it hits, you're all going to wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us"—

Obama: "We do know what makes life worth living. The people we lost in Aurora do know…"

More: "such violence, such evil is senseless, it's beyond reason"

Obama says the victims had dreams, plans that were cut short.

More: "I'm sure that many of you who are parents here had the same reaction that I did when they heard this news. My daughters go to the movies. What if Malia and Sasha had been at the theater."

Obama says he and Michelle will hug their daughters tighter tonight. "I'm so grateful that all of you are here. I'm so moved by your support. … But there are going to be other days for politics. This, I think, is a day for prayer and reflection."

How does one enter from an emergency exit. Those are big ass heavy doors which only open to the outside. He must have propped it open? But how does that go unnoticed?
Also, one eyewitness said as soon as the guy started shooting he (the witness) was told ny the police "to get low, get low"...how did the cops get there so fast ?
This smells like Columbine confusion all over again, with more than the stated number of gunmen and gunshots. What is it about Colorado that produces these horrible, confusing mass murders?

Cops were apparently there for crowd control, the same as in many places. At least 3 theaters of the 16 in Aurora were showing DKR, and the crowds, while not unruly, were definitely larger than normal.

Around where I live, people camped out starting late Thursday afternoon to get to the midnight showings. They had tickets, but wanted to make sure they got the "best seats". In the past, think LOTR & Avatar, movie-goers were undercover cops mixing with the crowd to stop any type of "adversarial" encounters.

In this case, preventative measures for crowd control may have saved lives by getting people out fast and, more importantly, not allowing the idiot to get away.

His car was parked behind the theater with his firearms inside (a neighbor says he saw the suspect put two black duffel bags in his car). He likely entered, then exited from the theater and propped it open slightly while he went to his car.

Given the reaction from Holmes' mother, I am expecting a similar back-story here.

Oh, and "cautious and concerned about loners"? I went to high school in Colorado, where my loner status was enforced by how cruel the other kids were. I didn't WANT to be a loner. When Columbine happened and I learned the shooters had gone into the school with a list, I sympathized with them completely. Colorado cities are not the places to be a loner or a nonconformist. As for TP connections or anything tying back to Rush or Sara, you can be sure if there is one the MSM will cover it up. The last thing the right needs is some right wing TeaBag terrorist. Instead they'll claim he's a lone wolf, mentally deranged and probably an atheist - since there is no organized atheist church to defend itself. Once again, just like Tim McVeigh, the blame will be laid on mental illness and lack of God than put out as what it most likely is - some crazy ass teabagger who went off the handle to defend his boy Rush. Remarks by the President on the Shootings in Aurora, Colorado

.....By now, many of you know, many of you have heard that a few miles outside of Denver in a town call Aurora, at least 12 people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a movie theater, and dozens more are being treated for injuries at a local hospital. Some of the victims are being treated at a children’s hospital.

We’re still gathering all the facts about what happened in Aurora, but what we do know is that the police have one suspect in custody. And the federal government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to bring whoever is responsible for this heinous crime to justice. (Applause.) And we will take every step possible to ensure the safety of all of our people.

We're going to stand by our neighbors in Colorado during this extraordinarily difficult time. And I had a chance to speak with the Mayor of Aurora as well as the Governor of Colorado to express, not just on behalf of Michelle and myself, but the entire American family, how heartbroken we are.

Now, even as we learn how this happened and who's responsible, we may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings like this. Such violence, such evil is senseless. It's beyond reason. But while we will never know fully what causes somebody to take the life of another, we do know what makes life worth living. The people we lost in Aurora loved and they were loved. They were mothers and fathers; they were husbands and wives; sisters and brothers; sons and daughters, friends and neighbors. They had hopes for the future and they had dreams that were not yet fulfilled.

And if there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it’s not the trivial things, which so often consume us and our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another. (Applause.)

It’s what we do on a daily basis to give our lives meaning and to give our lives purpose. That’s what matters. At the end of the day, what we’ll remember will be those we loved and what we did for others. That’s why we’re here.

I was simply speechless at Gohmert's complaint that no one else in the theater had a gun to take down the shooter.

The first thought that popped into my mind was the insanity of someone trying to kill a heavily armed man shooting into a crowd while being blinded by tear gas and surrounded by dying, injured and panicked people trying desperately to escape the carnage.

My second thought was that no one knew how many people were involved and that 'good samaritan' trying to help would likely be assumed to be part of the attack and killed themselves.

There might very well have been other people in the theater who were armed BUT smart enough to realize that trying to 'take out the shooter' was more dangerous to everyone in that theater than heading for the exit.

      Anon @ 10:03 -
I watched the press conference this afternoon and the police chief said that the shooter was wearing a gas mask, ballistic helmet and vest, leg, groin and throat protectors. Basically, he was protected head to foot and nothing that anyone could have been carrying on them would have taken him down.

He also set off some type of device that made a loud noise just prior to the incident. The apartment was booby-trapped with incendiary and chemical devices, all connected with trip wires. The speculation is that he planned for the noise to generate a complaint to the police who would then be killed or injured when attempting to enter the apartment, thus triggering a massive police response to the building. That, in turn, would reduce the number of first responders available to be at the theater.

He was obviously well prepared to do maximum damage with minimal risk to himself.

The AR-15 that was used in the shooting was one of the weapons included in the assault weapons ban that was allowed to expire in 2004, thanks to the GOP and pressure from the NRA. A loophole that would have allowed gun manufacturers to make a similar weapon was closed in the bill proposed in 2008, which was defeated.

There is speculation that the shooter used a high-capacity clip, which also was banned by the 1994 law.

      http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/07/20/557811/expired-assault-weapons-ban-would-have-covered-rifle-used-in-colorado-shooting/

Certainly, this is the act of a deranged individual, but the tools he used to create such destruction were made available by the GOP and NRA. He likely would have used other weapons if he was that determined to kill, but the number of deaths may have been substantially reduced if not for the types of guns and clips he was legally allowed to purchase because the law was permitted to expire.

Colorado Shooting Witness: 'We Thought It Was Part Of The Movie' (VIDEO)

Quentin Caldwell, a Colorado man present at the Aurora movie theater when alleged shooter James Holmes unleashed a torrent of gunfire, killing at least 12 and wounding scores more, says the audience thought it was all part of the premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises."

In the video above, Caldwell says the gunfire broke out around 30 minutes into the movie, during a segment that featured a firefight between characters. The audience appeared unassuming at first, Caldwell said, until a theater-goer yelled that someone had been shot. Caldwell saw multiple gunshot victims around the theater and shortly thereafter an announcement was made about the emergency, prompting attendees to attempt to leave the theater.

Political affiliation doesn't matter in shootings. A psychopath is a psychopath. Biological.

      I'm thoroughly horrified.

Yes, a psychopath is a psychopath.

Let him buy guns and he's a murderer.

In France even buying a hunting gun is subject to limitations (having a hunting permit, or being affiliated with a shooting club). That doesn't prevent real hunters from buying guns. But psychopaths can't.

Dear America, Can We Talk About Gun Control and Personal Responsibility Yet?

Can we talk about gun control yet?

I don’t mean taking away people’s guns. I mean can we talk about gun control. Can we have a discussion about gun regulations? It doesn’t seem that we can even broker the topic, such is the NRA’s lock on our gun policy. For every 1 person who asks this question, there seem to be 10 knee jerk second amendment defenders who refuse to sift through nuance. Regulation and control isn’t the same thing as taking away. Why exactly do we need access to assault weapons?

Even New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called for a conversation on gun control. “You know, soothing words are nice, but maybe it’s time that the two people who want to be President of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country. There are so many murders with guns every day, it’s just got to stop.”

I acknowledge that the alleged shooter appears to have no criminal history, and so a deeper background check might not have stopped him. But this is no excuse for NRA funded Republicans pushing to get rid of Colorado’s Insta- Check system. He also had access to a variety of guns and ammunition. Police found two Glock pistols, one Remington shotgun, and one AR-15 Type assault weapon in his possession.

I wonder how soon Westboro Baptist Church ('God Hates Fags') will show up with their protest signs proclaiming it's all because of gays and lesbians???
This is a monumental tragedy and my heart and thoughts go out to the victims' and their families.

So he's saying 'God' used this to scare people into believing in him? WTF?

Bryan Fischer today published an op-ed titled, “We have forgotten God. That’s why all this has happened,” in which he blames the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the U.S. Supreme Court for today’s violence in Aurora, Colorado, which took 12 lives — including that of a six-year old girl — and wounded 50 others. Fischer, the public face of the certified anti-gay hate group, American Family Association, quotes Nobel Peace Prize winner Aleksander Solzhenitsyn in the title. Pointing to U.S. history revisionist David Barton, Fischer says the ACLU in 1962 and the Supreme Court in 1980 “kicked God out of our public school system.”

Neighbor: Gunman Made Racial Remark At Bar Two Weeks Ago

That's the claim of one of James Holmes' neighbors.

Reed recalled putting a Lil’ Wayne song on the jukebox at the bar, and being chastised for it by Holmes.

“He was talking trash because he liked rock music and country and he made a slightly racial comment about people listening to rap music,” she said.

Her friend said they should leave before the situation escalated, and they did so.
This comes from a woman who met Holmes at a bar two weeks ago.

Her boyfriend met him at the same bar on Tuesday.

Aurora resident Jackie Mitchell turned on the television this morning and saw a familiar face staring back at him.

It was a mugshot of a man Mitchell had beers with at the Zephyr Lounge on East Colfax Avenue on Tuesday night.

The article doesn't mention what the racial comment was, but evidently it bothered the girlfriend and her friend enough that they left the bar soon after.

I read the first twenty or so posts and could read no farther. You people are nauseating, arguing for political points over a massacre. Simply disgraceful. Just as awful as the Breitbarts.

First: I'm a centrist voter who supports the President's re-election. Comparing me to Mrs. Romney misses the point entirely. I wasn't making a left/right argument. I was denouncing the majority of posters here (regardless of their political views)for their vulgarity and lack of decency.

Second: I'm an atheist WHO OWNS THREE AUTOGRAPHED COPIES OF "gOD IS NOT GREAT." Take it on faith (pardon the pun) that I won't be attending a "cultist church" any time soon, at least not as a devotee.

I've watched this unfold on the news and I have to give credit to the police and investigators, first responders, and the good people on the scene who helped others in their time of need. This tragic incident and it's aftermath shows the good side of humanity.
I know there's a lot of raw emotion, when things like this happen, we feel helpless and need to find a way to wrap our brains around it, I'm sure the comment thread will reflect the nature of the 24/7 news cycle, but as the facts come out, people are allowing their own fears amplify as they rush to find an explanation. It's human nature.

My heart goes out to those who were killed and injured, their loved ones and friends. The stark contrast of how candidate Romney spoke, and how President Obama spoke are like night and day. President Obama knows how to take the tragedy, connect with it in his own personal way, humanize those "statistics" and somehow comfort those who are effected.

    Mitt, not so much.

I've seen the argument that if people were packing heat, they could have saved people. Sorry, but the answer isn't more guns. Even if trained snipers were in the audience, even they couldn't react fast enough and ensure the safety of innocent bystanders.

This mad man had everything well planned, teargas cannisters in a dark theater, full body armor, a gas mask, and three guns, one an assault weapon. He rigged his apartment to inflict even more harm, death and destruction.

What I choose to focus on are the victims, mourn the lives lost, and hope for love, support and healing for the grieving and injured, even mentioning his name is playing into his warped mind. Psychopaths want you to remember their names, and he won't get that from me.

It's surreal seeing this on here. Everything feels so isolated yet the world is mourning with us. I live in Aurora. I've been to Century 16 many times for showings. This time around I was not there, luckily. However, many of my friends were in the theater that night. One such friend did not make it. Maybe I'm biased, but gun control and politics are the last thing on my mind right now.

Whether or not you're biased is completely beside the point at the moment. (And btw, as a human being it is simply a matter of course that you are, in fact, biased.) You're lack of concern with politics right now is nothing more or less than a positive sign of your humanity. You don't need to apologize for being a decent human being. Your reaction to all this is both natural and humane.
