The Palin curse lives as Romney camp steers well clear of possible female VP candidates.

Courtesy of US News:

Despite hints from Ann Romney, wife of likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney, that her husband is considering at least one woman in his vice presidential search, it's unlikely he'll actually a tap a female for the post.

That's because the long shadow of Sarah Palin still hangs over vice presidential politics, says Jennifer Lawless, director of American University's Women and Politics Institute. John McCain's decision to share the ticket with the former Alaska governor in 2008 was widely panned after a series of missteps by Palin, a relatively inexperienced politician many criticized for not being ready for the national stage.

"Whoever Romney picks, if she's a woman, would have to first demonstrate how much better than Sarah Palin she actually is, and that's not necessarily a good use of the campaign's time," Lawless says. But she adds that it is beneficial for the Romney campaign to float the idea that women are under consideration.

"Given the rhetoric regarding the 'war on women' and the fact that the Republicans are 'out of touch,' I think it's important for both parties to talk about how they actually care about women, women's plight, and think that women can be adequate leaders," Lawless says.

"Mitt Romney is ultimately going to find himself between a rock and a hard place because although it is important to demonstrate that there are qualified women who should be on the short list, the onus is then going to be on him to explain why they weren't his ultimate pick and he's not going to say, 'because I don't want voters to think of Sarah Palin,'" she says. "So he's going to have to navigate a pretty fine line and ensure that if he says that the most qualified person turns out to be a man that indeed that person is more qualified than some of the women's names who are floating around."

Lawless also says Palin will be a cautionary tale in vice presidential politics for some time.

"If the Democrats have a female nominee at some point, either as president or vice president, that could erase this," she says. "We just need another well-known, nationally publicized woman in politics to erase that image. The Democrats have a better shot at doing that than the Republicans do at this point because Sarah Palin was never on their ticket."

When I heard Ann Romney say that her husband might pick a woman for his VP, I knew for a fact that she was talking out of her ass. Or else that she was being kept COMPLETELY out of the loop.

There is NO WAY that the Republicans are going to gamble on another woman with Sarah Palin still cropping up on Facebook and reality shows to remind the American public what a colossal fuck up she was for the GOP in 2008. And besides, which serious female Republican politician would want to take that job with Klondike Kardashian still casting her icy shadow over the position?

Let's face it, Sarah Palin set women in politics back at least twenty years, and probably set the GOP women back a good fifty years. Though admittedly THAT is where the GOP men prefer them.

Astonishing: 6,500 stood under the blazing sun…

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: President Barack Obama told an enthusiastic, if steamy crowd this afternoon that the election “isn’t just about two candidates or two parties – it’s about two fundamentally different visions for America.”

Speaking at Carnegie Mellon University, he laid out campaign themes he’s been hitting on his “Betting On America” bus tour.

He got big applause when he said, “Why would we want to go backward to the same theory that didn’t work before?” and “The Supreme Court has spoken, the law we passed is here to stay.”

A crowd of about 6,500 gathered on the College of Fine Arts lawn. At least 13 people were treated for heat exhaustion as temperatures stood in the high 90s.

I have to admit if Mittens did select a woman Sara would be all over her like a cheap suit - proclaiming herself superior in every regard. The GOP would cringe at the thought of Baldy talking to Greta and making the selection be all about Sara. I can almost hear the interview now - Greta trying to steer Sara back from her narcissistic rant. It's going to be hard enough to hear her take on the actual selection. A woman? Perish the thought. It would be another blood libel moment

It's already begun. Crazies4palin has been pretty lackluster lately, but a recent post in regard to Kelly Ayotte (Jr Rep Senator, on the long *unlikely* list of potential veep picks) has been almost as popular as the "Mr.L Insults Everyone" post. They're gleefully ripping that woman's character apart, because -- Get this -- She didn't come to palin's defense or come groveling to palin after her (Ms Ayotte's) 2010 win.

See, it goes something like this: ANY non-Democrat that was elected in 2010 owes their successful win to sarah palin. And if you're not wearing a big ol' "I Heart sarah" pin (Star of David optional), then you must be considered a traitor and ridiculed at the peepond.

Paylin and her ilk (Bachmann, Allen West, Demint, Brownback, King) will do anything to advance their xenophobic views of America as a White Christianist nation

Paylin in particular really hit the lowest possible water mark in bringing hatred, racial division, slamming women's rights, and forcing a christian supremacist view into politics.

When I heard Paylin speak at the 2008 convention, it was the for the first time.

Great rant and follow up mention of the tale of the airplane sold on ebay (not) for profit (not). Another false claim was Palin is anti earmarks.

I admit that as a female I and other female acquaintances were excited a woman and mother was a veep pick. My enthusiasm waned during her speech. Easy research evidenced her main claims to greatness were false and a scrap of fact here and there. Initially, this unknown could have claimed she invented a cure for all cancers because she was that unknown.

Initially my friends and acquaintances were taken with her amazed Palin had built the largest pipeline etc. duped. The spin that true facts were "attacks"
      victimizing the modest yet extraordinary
      accomplished governor furthur delayed people
seeing through the smoke and mirrors.

Perhaps McCain would have won if had done the right thing to replace Palin when they discovered they had been fooled by her and the extent of her ignorance and entitlement. The unbridled enthusiasm of their base of evangelicals swooning over a DS baby as proof of anti abortion value, children birthed symbolic of their core values accomplished largely in deception. Such a

paradox to deceive the hard core christians.
Trig, guns, pregnant teen for me is no counter balance to habitual lying, high level manipulation, extraordinary ignorance, fostering hatred via lies, terrorizing people with lies, putting gun sites over people, lying you are poor, whining and more whining.

Ann is being used as propaganda...

Look, I am just a bit older than Mitt, and was born and raised LDS (Mormon).

Like me, Mitt is old school.. unlike me, Mitt takes this stuff very seriously.

When Mitt and I were kids (Ironically I was born in Detroit, my parents went to the same Church (but not ward) and my mother used to watch some of the Romney klan in our home), we were taught that not only were people of color sinners in a past life, and had ZERO chance of getting to the Celestial Kingdom unless they came back in the next life less sin free and white, but that women were subservient to men.

To this day there is NOT one person in power in the LDS church that is a woman.. NOT ONE.

We were taught that there will be a great Mormon leader in the presidency days preceding the second coming, this will be the sign it is happening.

There is NO WAY Mitt is going to have a minority or a woman a heartbeat away from leadership under his watch...

Definitely in agreement with cuppajava. Romney would never pick a woman; he's not going to pick a womwn who theoretically could wind up to be President. Women are definitely low status in the LDS church.

"When I heard Ann Romney say that her husband might pick a woman for his VP, I knew for a fact that she was talking out of her ass. Or else that she was being kept COMPLETELY out of the loop."

Those are not mutually exclusive positions. I doubt very much if Ann gets consulted on anything. This is a political campaign and LDS wouldn't think it was woman's business. Ann is being given orders. Ann, get out there and tell them that Mitt might consider a woman. Ann, get out there and tell them that Mitt's a prankster! Ann, get out there and tell them that the only reason the dog had diarrhea was because you left bad turkey out on the counter!

"Divorce Melts Palin to Shocking 98 Lbs"

I wonder if her weight distribution is as follows:

      45 lbs - Palin's over-sized head
      45 lbs - Palin's over-sized new inflated boobies
8 lbs - the rest of Palin's scrawny body

That head shot of palin was doctored quite a bit. It is especially noticeable with the hair streaking and face/neck emphasis. She may well be losing weight intentionally, or not, due to stress (and my heart does not rilly care)but she's still and ugly human being.

I've worked on a bunch of campaigns in Illinois and among the ones I am most proud of were helping the first women ever elected to statewide office in 1990 and two campaigns of one of the coolest, most qualified, smartest and most dedicated person (a woman) ever in our State Senate.

I think it's one of the reasons I have such a negative, viceral reaction to Sarah Palin. My women were role models, mentors, pioneers who had to work harder and be better than the men in order to be taken seriously. And they were.

The idea that either would wink, lick their lips, wear The Belmont Girls, use their kids as props, celebrate their lack of education, put their kids on TV, denegrate the President of the United States on a regular basis, wear bad wigs, lie about most everything, grift, threaten.... oh Hell I need to stop.

I agree with the writer. Mrs. Todd Palin has set back the notion of a woman Vice President/President for the Republican Party for a long time.(And to use the moniker of one of our posters "Fuck You John McCain!)

Once again I renew my plea. Someone in Alaska has information that can make this horror that is Sarah Palin go away. It's time. You have the information. People will have your back. Speak Up!!

None of the above, but I admire Ms. Netsch and supported her bid for Gov. She's good people.

I was out of state in '90. But I have a funny - to me - Chicago-area political activism story from Abner Mikva's '74 House campaign: It's possible tho not provable in court that I may have somewhat exceeded the posted 5mph speed limit on a winding Cook County Forest Preserve road and was pulled over by a uniformed Forest Preserve deputy sheriff. I was driving Dad's new 'Potato Brown' 2 cylinder 250cc 1974 Plymouth Valiant with a giant styrofoam Mikva campaign sign attached to the roof. (Dunno what it was back then, but the babes were really attracted to the combination of the garish colors of the sign along with the understated raw sexual magnetism of the Valiant, winner of J.D. Power's 1974 Most Boring Car Ever Made Award.) So the deputy comes back after calling in my license and says "You working for Mikva or just driving around with the sign on your car?" To which I replied, honestly, channeling my most obsequious inner-Eddie Haskell, "Oh no, sir, officer, sir, I've volunteered in the campaign office, your honor, and also done canvassing for him with my mom, sir.". He paused, handed back my license and said "Mikva's a good man. I'll remember you. If I ever catch you speeding in the Forest Preserve again, I'll take you to jail. Now get out of here."

Funny, huh? (I guess you had to be there... I know I was.)

      Beldar J,

It was probably that potato-brown racing color that made you appear to be going way faster than you were.

Unfortunately, cops often just assume that if you're in a potato-brown Plymouth Valiant or maybe a red Ferrari that you are probably either driving too fast or at the least, having way too much fun driving the speed limit. Police harassment is such a bummer. I hear Mitt wants to fire all the cops (and firemen and teachers), so I'm gonna vote Republican this year and save money on traffic tickets and tuition.

It's taken decades of hard work for women to be considered qualified for high political office because of their intelligence, skills and experience.

In one short campaign, Plain has fed into the misogynistic belief that women are only qualified for anything if their 'girls' are perky and they wear short skirts and trashy red high heels.

Decades of hard-earned progress negated by one slutty, stupid, incompetent, narcissistic, hateful, lying, unqualified twit in red pumps.

Gryphen, I hope you'll grant me the opportunity to explain why I'm supporting Mittens Rmoney for president in 2012.

First, let me say, this President Obama you always talk about seems like a decent enough fella but even you will admit he simply did NOT solve all of our problems, as guaranteed, within the allotted time of 4 years. Case closed.

So, you might argue, yeah, but what does Rmoney offer that's any better? And to that question I refer you to a little known but highly relatable incident known in maritime history as the "Third Mate Archibald Worthington Paradox".

You see, 3rd Mate Worthington was a crewman aboard the HMS Titanic on its fateful maiden voyage. And halfway between the time the iceberg was struck and the great ship slipped beneath waves, Worthington approached Captain Smith with an intriguing idea.

As the ship listed noticeably to its port side and rapidly filling lower compartments began to raise the massive brass screws above the waterline, Worthington said,

"Beggin' yer pardon, Cap'n, sir, but I think I've a way to save 'er, sir!"

"Out with it, man, there's not a minute to lose! She's sinking as we speak!, barked the Captain hopefully.

"Well, sir, since the berg opened up a terrible gash in 'er port side hull, I thought to myself, I thought, Worthington, old boy..."

"STOP YAPPING AND TELL US WHAT YOUR IDEA IS, Y'DAFT LAD!!"

"Aye, Cap'n. I think we could save 'er by running 'er at full speed int'nother iceberg tearin' 'nother hole in the starboard side as what she got on the port side and equalize the damage, sir."

In a very real sense, the voters today - especially conservative voters - are seeking the same sort of out of the box thinking that Worthington came up with during the Titanic crisis. And I honestly believe Millard Mittens "Mittens" Rmoney is the man to deliver such new thinking we so desperately need.

BTW, whenever I tell the Worthington story to non-seafaring folk, I always am asked what happened to Worthington since we know that many of the crew perished in the disaster. I'll assume you want to know, as well.

Eyewitness reports say that the bridge got very silent and Captain Smith stared at his 3rd mate a while before closing his eyes and asking quietly, "And that's your idea for saving the ship, Worthington?" To which the young sailor replied humbly with a wry smile, "Aye, Capt'n, 'tis!".

And to the plaintive strains of "Nearer My God to Thee" played by the doomed ship's orchestra, the dignified old captain grasped his heavy brass maritime spyglass and beat his 3rd mate to death.

And that's why I support Mittens Rmoney to be president of the United States of Amercia in 2012.

    Rmoney/Palin2012!!!! LANDSLIDE!!!

There are at least a fair number of Republican women like Snow and Collins and Murkowski who have political creds.
The real problem comes with picking a woman (or person of color) VP candidate and convincing them to run nationally for months on an anti woman ticket, and have to answer for it on the level of national WH wananna be interviews, articles etc.

I doubt it is a a combination that would work. And picking an anti woman woman would be a PR disaster rivaling the Palin pick.
