Louisiana parents upset about proposed lunchroom palm scanner. Fear it will lead to "the mark of the Beast." Yep, you read that right!

KPLC 7 News, Lake Charles, Louisiana Courtesy of the Huffington Post:

Moss Bluff Elementary School in Louisiana is looking to streamline lunch payments by implementing a palm vein scanner program, but some parents aren't pleased.

A letter to parents this week informed them of the new scanner that will allow the school's nearly 1,000 students to move through the lunch line faster and with fewer payment mistakes -- an issue that had arisen in the past, KPLC-TV reports.

While the letter notes that parents can opt their children out of the program, parent Mamie Sonnier told KPLC-TV that she was angry and disappointed by the program, as the scanner violates her beliefs. She contends that if the scanners actually make it to the school cafeteria, she'll be transferring her kids to another school.

"As a Christian, I've read the Bible, you know go to church and stuff," Sonnier said. "I know where it's going to end up coming to, the mark of the beast. I'm not going to let my kids have that."

"I've read the Bible, you know go to church and stuff."

Lady, are YOU sure? Because I don't think Revelations says what you think it says.

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. 16 It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.

Now THAT is crazy enough as it is, but the idea that this lunchroom palm scanner is going to imprint school children with this mark is going, in the words of the great Robert Downey Jr., "full retard."

Now this is usually where I get all preachy about the dangers of exposing ignorant people to superstitious nonsense and religions, but I will restrain myself here and simply open this topic up to discussion.

Next thing you will know these people will claim that they can see the image of the devil in the school's Tator Tots.

Oh shit. Microchips were put in both of our dogs when we adopted them at the animal rescue. I didn't realize it immediately recently when a wood board was blown off the privacy fence in the back yard, and I let them out to run around in the back yard afterwards and they both sneaked out for a couple of hours but came home while I was driving around looking for them. These are mutts, but pretty damn smart dogs, so I guess I need to check around to see if they started a bar tab under my name at one of the local bar-pubs with their little microchips being scanned. If that excuse works with my wife, I'll let y'all know. Not holding my breath here.

I'm not familiar with the palm scanner but it must be cheaper and/or faster than retina scanning or thumbprint recognition.

It sounds like a streamlined version like we had for our kids with their lunch card accounts that we loaded monthly or whenever and they had their card with the bar code on a little coil cord on their wrist. Which worked great until the kids wanted to trade because some kids had wrist coils with "cooler colors". Heaven forbid that some teacher gave little boys like my son pink wrist coils. In fifth grade, they began using PIN numbers, which were less hassle. I don't recall any discussions about Revelations in the school board meetings, and the elementary and middle schools are less than a mile from one of the largest Southern Baptist Churches in the country. I guess they never got the memo.

Apparently Satan was an IT major who wanted to streamline the process so kids could spend more time eating instead of waiting in line while their classmates dug in their pockets for that last nickel needed to pay for lunch.

How dare Satan improve our efficiency!

Gryphen, although I am cognisant of the point that you are making with regards to superstitions and biblical interpretations, I must register my dismay at this development.

I believe that ANY kind of biometrics is invasive and a very slippery slope to find one self.

Microchipping, scanning, tracking...it's all heading in one direction, somebody controlling somebody, and not in a good way.

I call complete BS to have children's bodies identify them to buy a lunch. If they can't manage their lunch events, then that sits with the management, not the kids. To have children become accustomed to having their bodies scanned in an everyday fashion is downright dangerous, setting up a psychology for accepting more and more biometric invasiveness, as if it's no big deal. It IS a big deal. And not for biblical or religious reasons (for me anyway).

I'm actually surprised that you didn't use this post as an opportunity to talk about the dangers of RFID microchipping, iris scans, and other biometric, science fictionish approaches that are being put in place by law enforcement, hospitals and retirement homes. Surrepticiously. Babies born in hospitals are being microchipped. Alzheimer patients are being microchipped. Dogs...well that's now become perfectly normal. Prisoners are being microchipped. The more that this becomes acceptable, the more mainstream it will become and then it becomes mandatory at some point and then all is lost.

I'm not being hysterical. I'm not being crazy. I'm watching the changes that are going on in our society. In own power structures. In our classrooms and prisons. It not so difficult to connect the dots. I've watched this unfold for decades.

Yes, it's fun to poke fun at the crazy christianist and ignorant biblethumpers, but please, Gryphen, please use your amazing reach on the net to also speak to these concerns...if you have them.

Perhaps you don't. Perhaps you find no alarm in this being put into place. Well, I do. And I suspect I'm not alone.

It's not an implant. Didn't you get that? It reads the microvessels on the palm of your hand - think full hand print fingerprint. It's noninvasive and doesn't leave any marks on your body. We are approaching micro-chips but this isn't it. Please read it carefully. We don't need to be as ignorant as the goopers.

I feel the same way about photo ID's. Photographs are graven images that steal your soul, and yet try to cash your paycheck without one.

When I buy gas, I have to give them my zip code (another mark of the beast?). My money is stored on a small plastic card. Where is the GOLD that backs my plastic money? Today, I had a phone call from "Emergency Communications" supposedly about our city spraying for the West Nile Virus. How do I know that's what they're spraying? It could be anything from Agent Orange to a massive strain of SARS... population control? I guess we'll all know in the upcoming days... THE END DAYS, that is.

I have one month's worth of water stockpiled, dried and canned foods... but I don't think it will last long if my neighbors find out. But then what do I do? It's a dilemma that haunts me night and day.

Leaving religion out of it, there's no flipping way I would let my kids be scanned for a meal. This seems too intrusive and wildly unnecessary. My kids have been using a PIN since they were in 1st grade with NO problems. So, maybe the school needs to explain why they need the handprints of every kid in school, just so they can have a hot lunch? That IS suspect. Unless you would like some SP type repug having access to your prints for no good reason, Gryphen?

It's just a scan. They already have your kids footprint from birth. Look at your kids real birth certificate - it's probably there and it remains the same throughout your life. If your kid is over ten they probably already have his/her fingerprint courtesy of some nice FBI dude who came to the school (or some other "fun" outing) and showed everyone how cool it was to have your fingerprint on an official looking card. They don't tell the parents or kids they file the original away for adding to the database.

But that is a fabrication of the reality of a lunch worker, Kids forget all the time and our schools use swipe cards until they were getting those stolen. A palm reader would read them faster get them to their seats, let them have more time to eat their meals in a schedule that leaves them less than 20 minutes to eat after standing in line.
It is a palm scan not a needle. Get a grip!

Too much in Revelations to interpret, whether some things are figurative or literal. But, having had a few teachings on it, here goes. The beast is a man, the second beast is a man, probably a priest or religious leader. They are either political allies, working together, or two world powerful leaders joining an alliance. Some people interpret it as a system.

If these represent men, then the governments they work with or the organizations that have great power over the masses and Rev. describes how a one-world government, economy and religion will be forced upon men. The first 3 and a half years, very little chaos, but at the middle of that seven year-mark, which starts the next and last 3 and a half years, chaos.

That seven-year reign and of which the last 3 and a half years exposes the man of perdition (AC) becomes filled with Satan himself and claims he is God, or God-like. The power he draws from is darkness against the God's power, but doesn't reach a successful end. If those who don't follow allegiance obey, well.......not a nice scenario. In fact, it is depressing. But, the part where Jesus returns as a lion and wipes out evil just at the sight of him, is a nice ending.

This scenario plays out much in the writings of various fictional books. Evil versus good. The battles of orcs, demons against the good. No one can deny that these writers were inspired by the world they live in, we live in, where there is evil and it creates a desire in us to see it end. It feels good to see some Orc get it's axe kicked.

Ryan's brother worked for Bain as a Senior Manager from 1995 - 1998. The issue is having an invested interest in a company which Bain invested in and said company was awarded government contracts. Both Willard and Tobin Ryan also benefited from the sale of the company.

It comes back to the same as the non-disclosed tax returns. No disclosure of the vested interest in the company when Gov of MA. Ryan's brother doesn't even acknowledge the company on his bio.

I call bullshit, Gryphen. Like the typical librul you are, you deliberately left out the biblical text that actually supports these parents' fears:

"Let the young children partake not of the food prepared by mustachioed harlots lest they pass between spinning millstones and turn to greasy goo of unpleasant odor."
    Listeriosis 21:12

The "millstones" is a clear prophecy of Satan's palm vein scanner! If doG-fearing parents let these evil machines operate on their children today, it's just a hop, skip and jump to highly invasive deep cavity body searches during physical education class, like those routinely conducted on innocent children in depraved metropoli such as Jew York City, Las Vegas, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Los Angeles and selected middle schools in Omaha, Nebraska.

Most schools have less than 20 minutes to eat lunch in a 30 minute period. So speed is a better way to get the kids eating and not standing in lines.

Ha, I remember this bunk from years ago. Different, yet similar too.

When I got to junior high, there were more kids from various backgrounds, including (as I'd not had previous exposure or experience of it) other kids who like to proselytize their extreme and conservative Protestant viewpoints.

In the very early 1970s, in junior high school, I recall getting some little Jesus loves you booklet from someone. In it, a story told of how we'd all have some mark of the beast, like our social security numbers tattooed onto us.

Less than a decade later, I got at college, some little booklet handed to me about how it was now going to be a bar code tattoo. So beware when the USA went to a cashless society.

Hmm, I seemed to survive credit cards and e-payments. Was George W Bush the anti-Christ? As during his reign was when I converted over from using checks and much cash and did online banking and other electronic payments, rather than banking in person, paying off bills in person or via postal mail and personal checks.

Otherwise, I still laugh at these rapture myths. Some Christians are nuts. Especially as decades ago, some of them were predicting the end and it never came and hasn't happened, though people still keep predicting the end and Jesus' return again and again.

I look at their rapture fear as a well paying con game. Scam people via fear. Control people via fear as it pays well for some (a few) other people. They get to be wealthy as they steal for themselves in the name of Jesus.

If I were Christian, I'd go for more of a helping others and social justice Jesus. That's what I learned when I was younger and in the Catholic church. I left that because I got tired of the upper management micromanaging everyone else's affairs and not their own affairs in Rome.

Yet I admire any social justice liberal and progressive Protestants, Catholics and people from other religions. Also progressive agnostics and atheists. Those who value and care for other people and are into more than themselves or just what they can get for themselves.

That's true pro-life rather than being a womb policeman or an austerity jerk to get another tax cut as many on the right do, mix religion and politics into service for themselves while they do their policing of other people, yet never of themselves.

I have no time also for policing idiots who are so easily misled or mislead other people, cannot tell the truth, aren't honest or ethical, who are so delusionally wrongly righteous, and keep predicting when the world will end (or they try to hasten that process, oh, let's muck up more in the world, global climate change or now a new war with Iran, so their fictional rapture comes sooner).

Plus, enough of these same conservative, busy bodies for Jesus, religious people had their ancestors justifying the enslavement of other people by what they picked and chose from the bible. The same as they do now, not with their own lives and follow their own bible, yet they become these busy body policemen into everyone else's lives based on what they pick and choose out of the bible. It's never about them, policing themselves. It's about who they can oppress: Gays, women, non-white people, or white or non-white people who aren't Christians and so on.

It's a lot of bunk. I'd say more, yet than I'd have to start calling it their conservative bull droppings for Jesus, and then use words that aren't so civil or polite.

USA does have a Taliban inside of the USA. A domestic, white peopled, tea party, Christian Taliban. That's the greatest threat to everyone in the USA and to the USA as a country for everyone. I fear them more than I fear some myths about who else might end the world. Nah, tea party Christians and their misled sheep, look in a mirror and see the greatest threat to the world. It's you.

Not to be a smart ass here, but I don't like the idea of humans getting chipped. It could start off innocently enough......but in a dystopian future, when the chip is used for everything, including access to your currency...what happens if they turn off your chip? Those of us with critical thinking skills could be turned off for asking questions like how did Sarah go from flat to Gusty big in 5 weeks??
From a medical stand point, I dislike the idea of having something in me to irritate my tissues and possible cause an immune response.
    I am not a troll.

If you weren't a troll you may have read AND comprehended the article.
I wouldn't have minded this with my children or if they do it with my grandkids in 2 different states.
They have already been finger printed for safety packets anyway.

This is against the law in Michigan, and I'm sure other states probably have similar laws.
