President Obama agrees to answer questions on extremely popular website, damn near breaks the internet. Update!

President Obama becomes a Redditor.
Yesterday our President finally succumbed to numerous requests from Redditors (Those that frequent Reddit.com) to participate in an AMA (Stands for Ask Me Anything.) which is a very popular feature on Reddit, and Obama has long been their dream "get."

The AMA is an opportunity for regular folks to ask actors, athletes, artists, and technology folks, etc., questions that the media never asks and that they have always wanted to hear the answer to.

The person answering questions is not obligated to answer any of the questions, and in fact with really popular people, there is NO way they could even come close to answering the glut of questions fired at them during one of these sessions.

This was certainly true for Obama, and in fact there was SO much attention to his AMA that it slowed the entire site down to a crawl. That is how I first recognized that something was going on.

I had not heard about the AMA so as I was browsing through interesting factoids and cute pictures of people's cats, I kept getting timed out or waited an exorbitant amount of time waiting for a page to load.

By the time I recognized what was happening and attempted to join the conversation, it was over.

Well shit.

Of course, as all of you know, yesterday was a pretty damn busy news day so I don't know how much time I would have been able to spend reading through the questions and looking for the answers.

However late last night I did just that, and decided that it was interesting enough to share with all of you.

So here is the subreddit, and if you don't have time to read through the whole thing below the fold are some of the main questions asked of, and answered by, the President.

Question: I am recent law school graduate. Despite graduating from a top school, I find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I'm sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it's difficult to be optimistic about the future knowing that my ability to live a productive life -- to have a fulfilling career, to buy a house, to someday raise a family -- is hampered by my debt and the bleak economic outlook for young people. I know that I'm not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?

Answer: I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You're right - your long term prospects are great, but that doesn't help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent's plan until you're twenty six. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle class jobs - and that's why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth - more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we've put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don't promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don't be discouraged - we didn't get into this fix overnight, and we won't get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more.

Question: What's the recipe for the White House's beer?

Answer: It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.

Question: What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?

Answer: Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress - to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.

Question: What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?

Answer: The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead - so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget.

Question: What is the first thing you'll do on November 7th, win or lose?

Answer: Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard - especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices.

Question: How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? and what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014?

Answer: We've really focused on this since I came into office - 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage.

Question: Who's your favourite Basketball player?

Answer: Jordan - I'm a Bulls guy.

Question: We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom. Is Internet Freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform?

Answer: Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody - from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although there will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle - and it will be reflected in the platform.

Question: Are you considering increasing funds to the space program?

Answer: Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level - so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight.

Question: How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?

Answer: It's hard - truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I'm spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store - so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I'm in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm - even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I'm back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating - this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER - if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience - NOT BAD!

There were some other great questions, and some not so great, but the President only had thirty minutes to spare so he either could not get to them or chose to ignore them. However I think he did a pretty good job, and left the majority of redditors VERY satisfied with his participation.

If this is your first exposure to the world of Reddit, I should probably warn you that it is a HIGHLY addictive site and I feel like the internet equivalent of a heroin dealer by giving you a taste. However it IS an incredible resource for bloggers, and for avid users of the internet it can be a source of great fun and interesting interactions.

So happy surfing!

Update: This is just for the redditors.

They will get it immediately.

It's too bad that not many know about this web sit. Maybe once people hear about it and that Obama's on it, it will become well known and read. I'm sure the site is going to get "questions" from the Tea Baggers that are not questions at all, but some of the same old ignorant comments. If he could answer them once, or counter them, maybe a directory could be set up where someone could go find past questions and answers, that way eliminating repeat questions.

Well at a billion page views a month, it's not exactly unknown, even if you don't know of it.

It's been around for a very long time and is common knowledge for anyone who is on top of the latest or hottest issues. Just their USPolitics subreddit has more than a million members, the world politics has more than 2 million, altogether with all the subreddits, it's GIGANTIC!

So you might be surprised that it is well known, even though you may not have heard of it. It's quoted in newspaper articles, on television news shows, it's drives campaigns and fundraising appeals, it even has it's own PAC. Yep, it's massive in it's influence.

Reddit is very well organized and you can search for all sorts of things with their excellent search engine. It was well entrenched long before Obama decided to participate, trust me. They have taken care of all sorts of ways to find information by sorting, by screen names, by subreddit, by date, by controversy, by hot, by new...it's extremely well laid out and you can find literally anything on the site from cute pics of animals to hard core porn. It's all at your fingertips in the enormous list of subreddits, so you can easily peruse what you want.

Unless you live under a very large rock in some forgotten flyover state with no internet connectivity you've heard of Reddit.

Hammer and a Feather, we'll also never know a virus, or have to be a slave to Macafee.

    4. Anony, do you see what pissed me off about your original comment? In case your obtuseness isn't deliberate, i'll tell you that it was intimating that only smart people use Apple products.

Plus, to make your comment oxymoronic, you've now stated that Macs don't get viruses.

Plus, you don't even know that people like me will not install a network using McAfee or Norton or even any of the Microsoft antivirus products. I'm not gonna tell you what we use because then i'd have to... well, you know.

If you're diatribing all over the internet about Mac users being smarter than Linux or Windows users, then i suggest that you're pissing off a huge amount of people who are reading that bullshit.

Your knowledge of Windows is not very current( McCafee?who uses that?),and the fact is that Mac's are not so safe and secure anymore and antivirus' are recommended. It seems the security was more due to the lack of popularity,so lack of attention from evil genius hackers..I use both, but Windows has more uses, across a wider spectrum.

4:32pm. We still don't need anti virus software. There was a trojan that affected only a few computers back in the spring, but really, we don't have the problems windows people have. Don't get me wrong, I purchase Office and use it on my Mac because I've always like their spreadsheet and word processing software, but I'd never dip a toe into their operating system ever again. I can't blame people for putting out $600 instead of $1200 for an average priced machine, but I will always maintain that you get what you pay for and we have Apples in our home that are 5 years old and we even gave a realllllyyyy old machine to a friend and she used it until if finally had a failure after maybe 12 years or so. They are superior products but they are expensive up front, but they will save you so much time and heart ache in the long run.

    7. Gryphen ~ can i at least say that the part of Anony 11:44's post that pissed me off was the insinuation that Mac users are smarter than Linux or Windows users?

    Behind the Latest Palin-Fox Fight

Palin has been disappointed by Fox's decision to not give her top billing on bookings. According to sources, the relationship at times has gotten so bad that much communication has been conducted via Palin’s husband Todd.

He was extremely disrespectful of President Obama, the office of the President. He spoke to an empty chair, putting foul words in his imagined President Obama's mouth. Clint Eastwood is an asshat.

This backfired immensely. Everyone's going to be buzzing about this part of the convention. They can backpeddle all they want, but they wrote it and put the empty chair on the stage, so they own it.

Romney blew it by mocking climate change and denying science. He embraced McCain's call for war with Iran and others.

  8. It was great, and I also came into it at the very end. What was great was that he threw in a couple of inside jokes for Redditors that made the experience really special.

If I had gotten a chance to ask him anything in the AMA I supposed I would have spoiled my chance by asking him about the movie Rampart (another Redditor joke).

I missed it live, but I admire the answers he gave. Reading your post reminded me of how insulating life in the White House can be, and how President Obama takes time to read letters from Americans and even answers them every night. I'm glad he uses social media and the internet to reach a wider audience.
