Video of Paul Ryan running away from Christian attempting to give him a Bible. Oh, that's an unfortunate visual!

Courtesy of the You Tube site:

After speaking at the 2011 Faith and Freedom Conference, Paul Ryan refuses to answer why he based his budget on the extreme ideology of Ayn Rand and not Biblical principles of economic justice then runs away from the Bible offered to him by the 7000 members of Faithful America who signed a petition asking the same question.

"I appreciate it. I've got some bibles."

Perhaps but one has to wonder if he has actually read any of them.

The fact is that while Ryan hides behind the camouflage provided by Christianity, his budget is  anything BUT humane or moral.

In fact just the other day he stated that he and Mitt Romney would IMMEDIATELY move to protect defense spending by instead cutting funds from programs that serve the poor and needy.

Courtesy of TPM:

If Mitt Romney wins in November, he and a Republican Congress will fast track legislation early next year to replace across the board defense cuts with cuts to food stamps and other programs for needy Americans.

“In January our intention is that if we don’t fix it in the lame duck is to fix it retroactively once a new session of Congress takes place,” Paul Ryan, Romney’s running mate, told a crowd in North Carolina Thursday, “We have procedural way in the Senate to advance that legislation very quickly and get it to the next President of the United States who I believe is going to be Mitt Romney, to pass that into law and retroactively prevent that sequester from taking place in January.”

Ryan was referring to legislation House Republicans passed earlier this year to avert sequestration — the penalty Congress imposed on itself, on a bipartisan basis, for not reaching an agreement on more targeted legislation to reduce the deficit. Sequestration will cause deep, abrupt cuts to both defense and non-defense programs starting early next year, and for the next 10 years, unless Congress overturns it or replaces it with other savings.

I don't give too much credit to religion for instilling morality in people, but it certainly could not have hurt for Ryan to have taken that Bible back in 2011 and perhaps read some of the words attributed to this Jesus guy whom his declared faith is named after.

Catholics don't read the Bible, they read the Bulletin-Kathleen Madigan.

Ryan most probably hasn't spent much time reading the Bible. Seriously, throughout my Catholic education, Bible reading or even study was not emphasized. In my mother's day, it was discouraged because the average person might see conflicts with the garbage they heard in sermons and start asking uncomfortable questions. A friend of mine who grew up in Mexico said that when he was a kid in the 50's the priest told them to avoid the Bible because it would make you crazy.

      Olivia, I can relate.

I don't recall the bible as a huge factor in my childhood (1960s, 1970s). Though it was present, read, studied, while I was also raised Catholic, I was more of a positive oriented, good for all, social justice, compassionate, nurturing, caring Jesus.

I got the best of Jesus without having to suffer through the bible or be like enough other people who pick and choose what they want out of the bible to justify their stands on anything. While they claim the bible is infallible, they don't practice nor obey all that is in it.

That only applies to other people and never the infallible bible believers. Nor does it apply to Catholics such as Paul Ryan. Even if he didn't read the bible, he certainly doesn't understand Catholicism nor Jesus.

Now I don't believe in much anymore. Enough conservative, hating, wrongly righteous wackos for Jeebus have destroyed any interest I have in Jesus.

So right. We were to memorize the catechism but avoid the bible because we might not understand it. Reading the bible was for priests, when they weren't doing nasties to the altar boys. [snark]

I read it by age 9, very precocious was I, and asked questions of the sisters who taught me in school. I asked one: If there were no people would there be a god? and that one got me is serious trouble. Of course no one could answer it and that was the end of any "faith" I had in any god or religion.
Ryan has never read the bible cover to cover, if he did he would not be who he is today.

Interesting. I was raised in a reformed church and we did read the Bible, and ,memorized verses, and had a very active and vocal Sunday School class through high school where we asked all kinds of questions. I remember asking my mother why I couldn't learn about other religions before being 'confirmed' in Grandma's church. She told me to get some books and read up. I did, and what sticks with me is that every religion has the Golden Rule and Love Thy Neighbor at its core; the two things totally lost on the GOP.

Ditto. I went to Catholic school from grade 1 - 12 (in the dark ages... late 50's - '60's) and I don't recall the Bible being as much emphasized as it seems to be in fundie denominations. It was taught more as the background leading to Jesus's establishment of Roman Catholicism. The emphasis was always on the latter.

When I started high school one of the books my parents had to buy for my religious instruction was a Catholic bible. I NEVER opened it in class (or out of class ) - not once.

I went to a Catholic high school in a big liberal city, and I got a liberal education (one of my religion teachers was a priest who got reassigned for protesting Pope Paul IV's renewed prohibition on contraception... another brought in members of other religions we could question about their belief systems) that led to my rejecting the whole shebang by the time I graduated. Boy, were my parents pissed.

So even though I am now a heathen, I will admit to having a few fond memories of Catholic school. Plenty of non-fond ones, too, but it wasn't all bad. It taught me to be an altruistic person and not value material things - one lesson Paul Ryan sure never learned.

I wish I had fond memories but alas getting felt up by the gay nun in eighth grade and seeing several male pals abused by visiting clerics hunting for money and boy sex sort of killed that off. High school wasn't much better with the priest who taught marriage giving A's for blow jobs to the pretty gals and several teachers in wife swapping parties (my mom was a teacher and told me all of the shit that went on). Oh and then college, yes good old Santa Clara U, where the priest in the all girl dorm chased one pretty coed up three flights of stairs to try and rape her.
Find memories of things catholic... not bloody likely.

My mother, who was just making ends meet, would always leave a very generous tip for her coffee-shop waitress or wherever she was -- "Cast your bread upon the waters!" she would say to me.

I said that to my mid-20s son yesterday, and he asked me what it meant and where it came from. I knew it was from the Bible, but was a little sketchy on which part. I explained that it meant the same as when he helped a mother the night before buy the larger size of milk at the convenience store because she didn't have enough money....that generosity (love) sent out into the world simply makes it a better place for all of us.

Then I found out the quote is from Ecclesiastes, and there are more interpretations of it than there are divinity students in Boston. But the basic message is still the same as what Jesus taught in so many different ways: love thy neighbor.

The Republican Party/Christianists are as far from the teachings of Jesus as possible. No wonder Ryan didn't want to be burdened by some insignificant book that might remind him that his tough-guy, Social Darwinian, elite and entitled attitude has nothing to do with his professed "religion."

The form Christianity takes for powerful Washington elites is unrecognizable to the citizens who vote for them. If fascism is built around a cult of personality then Jesus is the ultimate figurehead. Of course it's necessary to strip him of any dangerous ideas (the kind he actually espoused). This is why 'Christian' elites love Jesus so much while conspicuously ignoring his actual teachings. Fortunately for these leaders very few Christians actually bother to read their bibles.

What tea partiers need to know now is that their heroes are not what they seem. They are not what they say they are. They use 'christian' to soothe their electorate very cunningly. They may have a bible in one hand, or a cross pendant on the neck, or claim they grew up in a pro-life atmosphere, but despite the fakery, their motives are finally being exposed.

Who would have imagined that politicians now use their 'christian heritage' as a qualification for running? All they ever had to do is be honest and act on principles. Submitting to wealthy donors and selling out to pharmacies and insurers and power-makers is starting to unravel for them.

Who would have thought that Sarah P. would have demanded that Rep. Akin be removed? Four years ago, tea partiers would have seen the double standard. Even Huckabee, the family councils and evangelical community are outraged now and shocked and angry that their repub brothers haven't stood behind him. The candidates who pretended they were the 'one' are now showing their true colors. They are willing to sell out to the highest bidder.

I just hope that people get too discouraged so they don't vote on election day, as it's getting exhausting trying to decipher what the hell is going on with the 'right'.

Romney makes joke about 'birth certificate'.

    http://on.aol.com/video/romney-makes-joke-about-birth-certificate-517455404

Mitt Romney made a joke about his birth certificate at a rally in Commerce, Mich. on Friday.

Speaking about his Michigan roots, he said, "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

The joke was received with hearty applause by the audience. Still, it was an awkward moment for the candidate to play on the birther conspiracies that have plagued Barack Obama since he ran for president in 2008, even after the president released his "long-form" birth certificate in 2011.

The Obama campaign quickly responded, with spokesman Ben LaBolt saying that Romney was embracing the most extreme elements in the conservative movement.

"Throughout this campaign, Governor Romney has embraced the most strident voices in his party instead of standing up to them," he said. "It's one thing to give the stage in Tampa to Donald Trump, Sheriff Arpaio, and Kris Kobach. But Governor Romney's decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter across America."

Romney adviser Kevin Madden played down the joke, saying Romney was "only referencing that Michigan, where he is campaigning today, is the state where he himself was born and raised."

Ahh, A candidate refuses a Bible. As a former Roman Catholic, I can relate to everyone's "Catholic School Survivor" stories. We had the old order of St Joe nuns, with the killer beads that went from waste to floor, full habits with blinders and no hair showing, metal edged wooden rulers, and strong fists.

My unfond memory of Roman Catholic Church was doing "Catholic Aerobics" Stand sit kneel genuflect, bless yourselves, etc,

I do miss the aroma of incense and the look of stained glass. Now I lite a glade candle and look through a kalidoscope. Same effect, same results.
