This is only a short snippet of the entire interview, which had some pretty humorous moments.
I think that the President was pure class last night, and did not take the easy political shot offered by Letterman to trash Romney over those incredibly damaging YouTube videos, instead simply saying that people make mistakes.
I was also struck by how the President answered each question very honestly, never changing the subject or laying all of the blame simply on the Republicans (That's my job after all!), and that he spent considerable time laying out the problems and discussing what should be done about them.
Perhaps the most interesting thing for me was the President's cautious confidence that in his second term we might see an end to the political gridlock in Washington that has so hampered progress these last four years. Essentially the President pointed out that even though the Republicans came together (Essentially the night he was sworn in as President.) and decided to make sure he only held the office for one term, it makes no sense to continue on that path once he has successfully earned a second term.
It does make some sense in that these assholes will then need to start worrying about their OWN reelection, and simply bitching about a president that was chosen by a majority of the American people will make them appear petty and will not be enough to send them back to Washington. They are actually going to have to produce, and that means...gasp....having to compromise.
(You can see the entire interview on Late Night by clicking here.)
Update: It looks like the President's appearance gave the Late Show the old "Obama bump."
In New York, on CBS Owned Station WCBS-TV, the LATE SHOW delivered 495,000 viewers and a 2.6 rating in adults 25-54, making it the most-watched episode of THE LATE SHOW in New York since Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008 and highest-rated episode in adults 25-54 since Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006.
In addition to New York, the LATE SHOW also ranked first in its time period in viewers on CBS Owned Stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Minneapolis, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore.
My understanding is that Mitt and Ann Romney's appearance the other day on "Live! with Kelly" has resulted in that show facing imminent cancellation, and that Kelly Ripa has now developed a significant drinking problem.
Okay I probably made that last part up.
OMIGod her chin upside down shows the horror even more.

DeletePresident Obama is such a class act! I can hardly wait to vote for him AGAIN.
ReplyDeleteRepublicans (elected ones that are currently up for reelection across the country) are running away from Romney which tells you they have zero confidence in him and don't think he'll be elected!
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
And Sarah....he was quick on his feet without the use of a teleprompter so there goes that nut tard talking point as well.

DeleteColbert Attempts To Repeat Romney’s 47 Percent Message With More Elegance
ReplyDelete“As you know, we are all gathered here this evening because I have agreed to accept the presidency,” Colbert said. “But unfortunately almost half, two score and seven percent will vote for my opponent, that socialist Hottentot. But what could one do? These people are just greedy parasites, sucking on the withered teat of Lady Liberty. Oh, how their hunger knows no bounds.”
http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/09/colbert-romney-47-percent.php?ref=fpnewsfeed
Writing off the worth of 47% of the American population is not a 'mistake,' it's a flawed world view of anyone aspiring to national leadership. This guy doesn't want to lead, he wants power. Therein lies the fundamental difference between Obama and Romney.
ReplyDeleteVery nicely said. Agreed!

ReplyDeleteNothing. But. CLASS. Here's to your next term, Mr. President!

I see the possibility of getting through some of the gridlock for this reason.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama cannot run for president in 4 years. Therefore there is no incumbent. It's a clear field. It is also the fact the GOP has to regrow and expand their brand in order to put a candidate out there when both the Dems and Rethugs will have to run primaries. It a total new field there being no incumbent. It means they have to have the 'working co-operation' in Washington in order to take it into 2016 to appeal to moderates and independents and those they have done everything they can to push the minories out in this election.
You also have to remember the length of the primaries for the Dems in 2008. That could very well happen again at which time that would mean 2 strong candidates getting 'boots on the ground' experience whereas the GOP will be flitting around waiting for the convention and the general campaign. That doesn't give them better skills.
Plus, Republicans will be voted out of Cogress this next election cycle in November. The jerks need to be replaced across the country!
DeleteSuch a graceful, intelligent and thoughtful man.... how sad (and telling) that a late night comedian and a rowdy studio audience can show him more respect than Congressmen, Governors, poltical "pundints" and his opponent
ReplyDeleteFor old time's sake and for those of us who loved K.O - here is a link to a recent Keith Olbermann video Special Comment - his response to Romney's leaked video http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/18/keith-olbermann-mitt-romney-special-comment_n_1893479.html
ReplyDeleteIt was a great interview all around, but the part that sticks with me the most was President Obama's last line about saying hello to Harry. The leader of the free world with a million things on his mind, after at least 40 minutes of talking about any- and everything, and he thinks about the feelings of an eight year old boy with a stuffed cat!
ReplyDeleteHow could ANYONE hate this man?
Actually, being that Harry is now 8, I would have thought that Letterman would have allowed him to come to the show and meet President Obama backstage. It is filmed about 5 o'clock so it's not that he should be in bed.
DeleteIt would have been something he would have remembered the rest of his life.
Priceless - LOVE this quote
ReplyDelete"
The problem for Romney right now isn’t that he’s running with Sarah Palin. It’s that he’s BECOME Sarah Palin.

How many times is the Republican party going to 'remake' Mitt Romney? Can you imagine if the Dems came out w/the same commentary about President Obama! What absolute bullshit! Romney has shown himself for what he IS and ISN'T and the citizens are not being fooled!
ReplyDeleteI hope they play this leaked video of Mitt up until election day...the guy is a total asshole and has no compassion for anyone except the rich. He'd have the government in one giant mess if elected. Plus, his 'business' background will not help in government...they operate differently!
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
The video has some very damaging parts for Romney. But if people watch the whole video the balance will probably come out in Romney's favor. It's now all there at Mother Jones in two parts. It never should have been shown in it's entirety and should be taken down as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteRomney comes across as relaxed and sincere as he talks about the economy the problems being created for our children and grand children. True or not, that is where he is going to challenge Obama and be most successful.
LOL..Obama didn't create this deficit, Bush did. Romney can't escape the FACT that the republicans tanked the economy and then obstructed the President's efforts to repair the damage.
DeleteAnd of course he is relaxed in the video...he is in his natural environment..more millionaires!
I offered you the facts but if you would rather feel good about it all then that's up to you. The video is not going to be a overall plus for Obama.
DeleteCognitive dissonance at its finest.
DeleteThanks for playing Anonymous 9:36. you're a hoot!
what it shows in its entirety is that mitt is more comfortable with people that pay $$$ for dinner than he is with the people that attend his campaign rallies.
Deletethat says it all.
obama is a gentleman, a thoughtful person, and the finest president ever. his service to the nation is in every way a blessing.
romney just can't do it -- he has been wanting to be president for nearly 8 years and he doesn't have a plan on how to achieve his singular goal. and he has no class.
Anonymous12:43 PM
DeleteWhat "facts" did you offer? The video shows Rmoney as a man with no clothes on...or magic underwear!
Maybe if your turned the channel from FAKE News you would know that! Stupid ass bot! LOL!
Romney, himself, in the hastily made double down said he wished the entire tape was made public so people could see it was "out of context" (In what respect, Mitt?)
DeleteMother Jones obliged him, and clearly it's much worse in context. So what "facts" can 12:34 possibly offer?
My favorite was his "We'll use Ann sparingly" line. Good Idea.
9:36 But, things are improving under President Obama and VP Biden. I lost my shirt back in 2008, but have regained just about everything - as to investments and stock values. I know many others that have been pretty much made whole again. Why isn't the press showing more of that information?
ReplyDeleteThe economy isn't going to work for the asshole Romney! Jobs that once were will be no more - EVER - that has to be talked about too by the Obama/Biden team and the media.
So many jobs are being replaced by 'other' than humans! Plus, the corporations have to hire people and I think they are not doing so on purpose - for the jobs that could be made available. The corporations are anti Obama remember!
I've called it for what I feel forever -- they've been manipulating the market and holding the funds back. Acting like those little boys that don't wear 'big boy' pants.
DeleteObama Appearance Gives ‘The Late Show’ Its Best Overnight Rating Since February 2010

OFF TOPIC:
ReplyDeleteUncle G,
Listening to NPR: Got any GOODS on Gary Johnson?! Sounds like a pretty kick-ass Libertarian! Maybe I would vote for him in 2016 but just thought you could post anything on the possible 3rd party run...
I got a hint of how it is that normal seeming people are supporting Mitt Romney, on Facebook, just now.
ReplyDeleteThere's a posting that has been shared many times, asking if drug testing should be performed on welfare recipients.
My snarky comment was that we should go a step further, by stripping them down, covering them in their own excrement, and parading them down the main street of town, throwing pennies at them, in scorn of their laziness, for not becoming millionaires in a country where its so simple to do so.
No one seemed to catch my sarcasm. Instead, there are nearly a million "HELL YES!" comments.
I detect a Fox channel inspired hatred of "other people."
When you point out to these dullards that they, too, are living off the taxpayer teat, in one way or another, it doesn't wash, as they've got it drilled into them, that anyone OTHER than them, does not deserve public assistance...while they, of course, do.
The Romney campaign appeals to those who think OTHERS need to be smacked down...or, in the case of the people in other countries: NUKED.
Gallup now has Obama with a 1 point lead and a M.o.e. of 2 points. And there is going to be a backlash against Obama over the video because Romney is succeeding in spinning it in his favor. This is not looking good folks. All hype and pretending aside.
ReplyDeleteBullshit!!
DeleteYou go vote for Mittens, moron.
If they give you permission to leave the ward...
