Chrysler issues statement to calm concerns by workers that their jobs are being shipped overseas to China.

"Well that's embarrassing. Still not going to admit I was wrong though."
Courtesy of Chrysler:

I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China.

North American production is critical to achieving our goal of selling 800,000 Jeep vehicles by 2014. In fact, U.S. production of our Jeep models has nearly tripled (it is expected to be up 185%) since 2009 in order to keep up with global demand.

We also are investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities. The numbers tell the story:

• We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty -- including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.
• At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.
• In Belvidere, where we build two Jeep models, we have added two shifts since 2009 resulting in an additional 2,600 jobs.

With the increase in demand for our vehicles, especially Jeep branded vehicles, we have added more than 11,200 U.S. jobs since 2009. Plants producing Jeep branded vehicles alone have seen the number of people invested in the success of the Jeep brand grow to more than 9,300 hourly jobs from 4,700. This will increase by an additional 1,100 as the Liberty successor, which will be produced in Toledo, is introduced for global distribution in the second quarter of 2013.

Together, we are working to establish a global enterprise and previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the world’s largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand, which would not otherwise be accessible. Chrysler Group is interested in expanding the customer base for our award-winning Jeep vehicles, which can only be done by establishing local production. This will ultimately help bolster the Jeep brand, and solidify the resilience of U.S. jobs. Jeep is one of our truly global brands with uniquely American roots. This will never change. So much so that we committed that the iconic Wrangler nameplate, currently produced in our Toledo, Ohio plant, will never see full production outside the United States.

Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand.

It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.

Sergio Marchionne

Of course this statement is in response to this incredibly duplicitious ad by the Romney campaign.

Okay somebody help me out here. In the whole history of American politics, has a major manufacturing company EVER had to call out a politician over falsely accusing them of shipping jobs overseas?

I'm relatively sure this is a first.

But hey that's okay, after all Mitt Romney's a "car guy" right? Yeah, right.

    OT....

Sarah and Bristol where you hiding?

Ever since Sarah's racist comments she has kept her anorexic body out of the news. The same with Bristol. Ever since she was voted off the island she has kept her nose in her canvas tent. I wonder if Bristol is at Applebees drowning her sorrows or making up for lost eating time?

  2. I don’t think it’s happened before, but there wasn’t widespread movement to other countries until twenty years ago.

Sergio could be a liar, but since he put his name on it and didn’t hide behind some woman (a common practice), I’m inclined to believe what he says is true.

We know Mitt is a liar.

Actually, Mitt Romney is a lying sack of shit, and may not even be human, but if he is, he without a soul. He is a spectacular example of a craven weasel who will say and do anything to get what he wants. If he is elected, historians will analyze for a generation the factors that created an electorate so disengaged, so deceived and/or so willfully self-destructive that they let allowed someone who is such clear and blatant example of a "f*** you" lying, manipulative cynic into the White House. People, if this man is elected, then it might mean we deserve him for not fully understanding and supporting our President's steady march to progress.

    1. I agree with you, but I think if he becomes president it's because he stole the election along with the republican party and racists who set out to destroy Obama's chances for a second term. These crooks are even destroying our economy to take over the Whitehouse! Anyone for him and the republican party are against the United States!

You really have to wonder: how did we come to this? In what world is this man's dissembling, studied aw-shucks blandness, and secretive, arrogant soullessness become acceptable? And to the larger question: what does it say about Americans as a culture, and as a democracy, that the GOP and its "southern strategy" could so successfully appeal to latent racism to compel citizens to vote against their own social and economic interests - and to participate so fully and enthusiastically in their own deception?

Mitt Romney is not a car guy. Willard the Weasel is a "Me first and me only" guy.

Incidentally, recent audio as released on Mother Jones by David Corn in which Romney revealed that it was Ann Romney who pushed him into running and would not listen to any of his arguments against it is quite telling. Ann apparently wears the pants in that family despite typical Mormom attitudes towards women.

No wonder Mitt walks so damn funny wearing the Mom jeans.

That tape holds many treasures- why didn't Corn come out with this stuff earlier???

"Obama sees you as evil" Doesn't it echo Shrub's often used term "evildoers"?

And Ann lied when she said she played back a tape she made after he lost the last election saying "Never Again" and "man pants" Mitt said "You said that after every pregnancy".

Putting out this statement took guts for Chrysler, but I was thinking, since businesses are people, too- can a business sue a politician for lies?

It's especially ironic because of Mitt's "business" experience. Buying businesses, saddling them with debt, firing people, then flipping the company for a profit.

There are SO MANY things the Republicans need to be called out for:

Obama "stealing" $750 billion from Medicare to pay for Obamacare. (lie)
The Department of Labor trying to pass regulations that would NOT allow farm kids to do chores. (big lie)
    Obama's "apology tour"
Obama's "communist policies" (we have the lowest tax rates in 100 years!)

The right-wing lies just keep getting bigger and bigger and the media needs to start calling them out on it.

Mitt was just projecting: Just because under Bain Management Jeep would have moved their manufacturing and jobs overseas, doesn't mean that's what Chrysler was going to do on its own.

The nerve of this guy to question traditional marriage and traditional nuclear families, the great grandson of a polygamist with a father born and raised in Mexico. The nerve of this guy to question patriotism, a man who dodged Vietnam for Paris. The nerve of this man who brags about his business background when all it was was a parasitic organism leeching stuff other people built and crashed (cashed) them and their jobs out. The nerve of this guy who says he single handidly saved the Winter Olympics when over 80% of the budget came from the Federal Government (unprecedented) and that he would work to serve All Americans, when he only recognizes the 1%.

I think Chrysler should sue Mitt Romney. Those false statements could negatively affect their business to say nothing of the effect on employer/employee relations.

And I think NYC should prosecute the Republican operative (campaign manager for a GOP Congressional candidate in Manhattan) who issued faked tweets and photos during the worst of Hurricane Sandy in New York claiming serious flooding/damage in places that weren't damaged at all. Lots of time wasted by officials checking out reports that were fiction. What is wrong with Republicans? It's seems to be some sort of disease - lie-a-minute.

    1) The President of Jeep/Chrysler should endorse President Obama;

    2) George Romney's 8 year tenure as CEO of American Motors from 1954 - 1962 does NOT make his son a "car guy". It makes him the Son of a Boss.
