Okay you may be wondering why anybody would place their candidate between two giant letters that spell out "BS" but perhaps this next picture will clear that up.
Ah! See from a little further back it spells "JOBS." Well THAT certainly makes more sense don't you think?
However one has to wonder if it EVER occurred to Romney's staff that any close up pictures would open their candidate up to ridicule?
Here is how one local Denver politician responded to the sight:
"To all of my political friends who worked Advance for a campaign - SOMEONE has to realize that this staging will frame your candidate's message poorly, right???"
Yeah you would certainly think that SOMEONE in the campaign would have noticed, and taken pains to make sure that it did not send even a subliminal message like that, don'tcha think?
Unless........
Update: You know I wrote this post yesterday, before the debates. But after seeing the fact free way in which Romney conducted himself I think it is more appropriate than I could have imagined at the time.
Essentially bullshit is ALL that Romney has on his side in this election. And he used it liberally last night.
Here was a summary from FactCheck.org:
Romney sometimes came off as a serial exaggerator. He said “up to” 20 million might lose health insurance under the new law, citing a Congressional Budget Office study that actually put the likely number who would lose employer-sponsored coverage at between 3 million and 5 million. He said 23 million Americans are “out of work” when the actual number of jobless is much lower. He claimed half of all college grads this year can’t find work, when, in fact, an AP story said half either were jobless or underemployed. And he again said Obama “cut” $716 billion from Medicare, a figure that actually reflects a 10-year target for slowing Medicare spending, which will continue to grow.
That is only a small portion of the crap sandwich Mitt Romney served the American people last night. But because neither the moderator Jim Lehrer, nor President Obama called him on it, many viewers undoubtedly believed that Romney was in command of "the facts." Of course such was not the case.
Last night I had the strangest feeling of deja vu while watching, and then this morning I realized why, and tweeted this.
Shades of 2008. Much like with Romney every pundit also believed that Sarah Palin won her debate with Biden. Didn't help. #debateYes it is in fact almost EXACTLY how Palin conducted herself in the 2008 election right down to refusing to follow the rules and making up her own set of facts. So perhaps in his desperation Mitt Romney finally DID go to the Lunatic from Lake Lucille for advice.

The new drift this AM is....Obama isn't used to defending himself to anyone, and he didn't have a teleprompter. Then, Obama looked down instead of meeting Robme's gaze which was throughout the entire debate. I dunno how to feel about this at all...how Obama keeps his anger subdued is so beyond me, confronted with so many lies in his face. Basically Robme became a new person while anyone following his speeches knows he changed pretty much everything he has been saying throwing the entire GOP plus Ryan under the bus...amazing. I hope Chicago is right when saying they gave Robme enough rope to hang himself, now these ideas were broadcast in the debate, not in stump speeches, I hope so. I can't image Biden doing this....but considering what is going on in Syria might have had something to do with Obama's attitude of looking exhausted last night. He needs our national hug, Robme isn't fit to shine his shoes.
ReplyDeleteHe looked down or he would have smacked him for shameless lying.
Delete@Karen, that was my take on Obama's looking down as well. I saw anger on Obama's face; he looked down so the cameras would not pick it up. I don't blame Obama for his reaction; I feel the same way when I know someone is lying to me.
DeleteI wanted to throw something when Romney kept hammering that Obama failed to work WITH the party that decided to never work on ANYTHING except his failure. Of course Romeny could work with Democrats. When we are elected to an office, we actually try to serve the people and not ourseleves. We don't hatch a diabolical plan to take down a person AND the country with no remorse at all. Romney is a cocky, shameless, smug liar. Period. Any bump he gets from this will soon be negated by the stark truth that he left MA far worse than when he began there, that he lies about his taxes, that he was only successful with the Olympics because WE bailed him out, and that he still hates us.
ReplyDeleteRomney was hammering at the truth and gave as much of the truth as time afforded. This is more than just being concerned about who the best guy is, it is about choosing the guy that is not plotting to remove our constitutional rights along with setting up a socialist country.
DeleteDefinitely Romney came across stronger last night. It is not a surprise since his only "job" for the past 6 years has been campaigning to be president. Obama, on the other hand, has the toughest job in the world along with campaigning, debate prep, and dealing with an opponent who will lie about anything and everything. I expect Obama will be much stronger at the next debate.
ReplyDeleteLet them wallow in it. It will last about as long as the Palin bump. She got out there and kept lying and Americans do not like liars. Mitt has nothing else.
ReplyDeleteThe DNC have more TV Ads using Romney's words from the debate. He lies. Period. His aggressiveness and smirky? NOT a leader, although some may think so. If I weren't already in Obama's camp, Romney's bullish ways would make me question his abilities to be my leader. Can you imagine having a boss, spouse, friend, behave like a spoiled child?
ReplyDeleteThis is the guy who trips a woman to win a foot race. Who has workers build a stage so he can walk on and fire them.
DeleteThis is also the guy who forced coal miners to lose a day of pay to stand behind him as props in one of his stump speeches or risk being fired.
DeleteI thought Obama won, he was calm and factual, but of course I belong to the reality based community.
ReplyDeleteIf manic flailing and fantasy are your cup of tea then Romney's your guy.
On behalf of Obama I want to address the basic no win situation faced with a liar for liars lie to win and make a loser out of the other. Preperation requires being prepared for the lies known but new lies are challenging. Convincing practiced liars are in control for they lie with ease and lie about everyone and even lie about research and reports.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if the dems prepped for Middle class Mitt showing up. Mitt's spin on taxes, ending loopholes yet not being forthright is a razzle dazzle confused message.
I agree with Pundits that Obama might have framed Romney as etch a sketch Mitt suddenly morphing into a false character defender of the middle class.
Mitt has no emotions, is cold and can act assuming different positions and characters. Hopefully trust and truth is a deciding factor for voters. I believe Romney is a chamaeleon and he crafted a character last night that hit upon a persona pundits and repubs liked.
Hey, guys, listen---wanted to write this last night on the debate thread, but was too tired and scrambled from listening to Mitt carry on like a six-year-old on a sugar high at Chuckie Cheese.
ReplyDeleteMike Papantonio sat in for Ed Schultz yesterday, and predicted that the first debate would go to Mittens--that he would come out looking like a champ after a disastrous few weeks, and his poll numbers would bump to close up the race a bit. The corporate news media needs to keep election tension going to bring in viewers and big ad bucks. The best way to do this is to use a "sports" strategy, and I'd been thinking for days that the debate commercials reminded me of a pay-per-view wrestling event. Pap actually compared it to the World Series or the Super Bowl. He also urged us NOT to be disillusioned or complacent; all the pundits will suddenly ADORE Mitt, the debates will go back and forth as to who "wins," and the horserace will play out until November 6th. Now watch for the onslaught of paid Rethug trolls, whining and crying about how they voted for O in 2008, but are SO disappointed that they'll vote for Mitt based on this one debate.
It's sad that the debates have to be reduced to a money making venture with little attention to substance and the future of our country. It's become a bogus "contest" reality show. DWTS, anyone? Romney behaved like the most belligerent, lying sack of shit that a marketing team could conjure up, and unfortunately that's what "sells" in TV land. Based on Pap's theory, I'm not entirely sure if Pres. O. was told to keep a low profile to play up Mitt's scenery-chewing performance--interesting thought, and VERY sad if true. Let's see how the next debate goes...
I saw a law school professor debating a school yard bully. I want the calm, smart professor to be my president, not a low-information bully.
ReplyDeleteWhat people need to realize is that the Obama team gain new commercial material thanks to this debate. Romney gave so much material to use because he couldn't stop lying. Obama did the right thing and not engage Lyin' Romney with his lies because he has to live with those lies now.
ReplyDeleteMargaret and Helen are right as always.
ReplyDeleteMargaret and Helen
While our esteemed media are jabbering away about Mitt's awesome "debate" skills, what will go unnoticed is the grassroots response of many thousands of Obama supporters to this debate. Make no mistake, Obama campaign volunteers will be on the ground talking one on one with their fellow citizens about the FACTS of Obama's vs. Romney's positions every single day from now through November 6 -- I know I will be doing my part. Mitt won this battle by lying and being a dick (his tried-and-true formula for success), but he will not win the war. There is too much at stake in this election for too many of us to allow that to happen.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you, Skycatcher. It's not over until the last vote is counted, and Romney didn't sway many Obama voters and few, if any, undecideds.
DeleteWe really saw the guy who tripped his own daughter-in-law who had recently given birth when she was about to win in a race. I have always had a policy of WATCHING behavior and Rommney was the privileged schoolyard bully!!! His contempt for Obama was obvious and so was the look on Anne's face when she had to hug Michelle. What is wrong with the pundits who fell for this? Extremely disappointed in Maddow and shocked that Sharpton was the one who made the most sense. Rommney's treatment of Leherer was despicable!!!
ReplyDeleteI was pretty dismayed by the first debate.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the moderator did not challenge or ask for any clarification of the many fibs and outright lies flying across the stage.
Having slept on it, my conclusion is that Obama did not bring his "A" game; he gave Romney all the rope he could handle, and INDEED he was talking as fast and aggressively - even rather rudely as possible, and super, super animated - almost manic behavior.
I wish Obama had just smacked him down; but I hope Obama was purposely low-key to play into Romney's jerk arrogance and for the donors behind him to keep feeding money into the national race, rather than the state campaigns.
The more I think about this debate, the more it looks like the Biden vs Palin match, where Joe Biden was very - almost gentle, and low key, and she was a maniac, blowing kisses and winking. Everyone said that she "won" that debate. But she was the one crying after the election.
Google 'gish gallop'
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's perfect description of Mitt's verbal diarrhea.
DeleteObama Diary has President's speech in Denver today, he lists many of Romney's lies
ReplyDeleteMy favorite line: Don't boo, vote.
2nd: We succeed as a nation when the middle class succeeds.

I haven't read through the comments, I wasn't disappointed at all with President Obama's debate last night. I went to a viewing party with people I've met while working with OFA. Everyone was punching pillows and screaming at the television at the lies Romney was spewing.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama was playing out his cards very carefully. I think President Obama's approach will work in his favor in the long run.
President Obama spoke the truth, and by letting Mitt be Mitt, he basically avoided getting mired in a debate over Mitt's lies, there were simply too many to address effectively in the confines of the debate, and besides, President Obama would have come off as petty, "The angry black man", elitist etc etc etc...
Romney's flaw was believing he had the upper hand, he gave the Obama campaign all the rope they need, and more, to win the campaign.
Romney is already in "OMFG What did I do?" mode. Tonight on Sean Hannity, he addressed the 47 percent issue by admitting it was wrong, but not apologizing nor taking it back.
