Yesterday I posted about an interview conducted with Republican VP candidate Paul Ryan that became so tense that Ryan's handlers cut it off and Ryan actually pulled his microphone off while the cameras were still filming.
I knew that the interview was very telling about Ryan's character, and about the plans that he and Romney have for dealing with this country's problems. However last night Rachel Maddow delved even further and dug up some rather interesting facts while also providing a little more perspective.

I wonder if Ryan would have walked out if the question had been posed as "Mr. Ryan, how does your proposed tax plan impact these inner city issues?"

Deletea) we the people were too stupid to understand the brilliance of his plan ("I don't want to go all wonky on you"), or
b) that there wasn't time to get through the moronicity of we the people ("I don't have time to explain"), or
c) we the people have no interest in our responsibility as citizens to make the best-informed decisions we can about the election ("you'll just change the channel").
Then he would walk out.
The question was not inappropriate. How can any rational person think that charity and church can eliminate the kind of entrenched poverty and despair that cities like Flint and Pontiac, Michigan, suffer? Ryan and his team know perfectly well that the reduction of poverty and the improvement in morale require 1) education, 2) jobs, and the restoration of human dignity to people who, for too many years, have been totally ignored by the rest of the country. And they know that all of this requires massive government involvement; they simply do not want to spend the money or the imagination to do it. So blame the poor people; don't do anything to improve their possibilities in life. The poor in this country are at the bottom of the 99%; people like Ryan and Romney want only to think about the 1%.

DeleteThe cities such as Detroit may lean liberal traditionally. Look at the history of the State legislature - Repubs have been gaining ground there in the last decade.
DeleteI've got family in southern MI. and all those rural areas are extremely conservative - more like Indiana than N. MI. I was in Cold Water in July and everywhere where GOP signs, evangelical signs, TP signs EVERYWHERE in support of R&R.
And, MI has a Republican Gov, Lt. Gov, Sec. of State, Atny Gen. and they hold majorities in both the state house and senate.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw this, I thought the tax question sort of came out of left field. This time, though, not so much--Ryan offers his prescription for solving inner city violence, and the reporter asks if it's possible to do all those things while cutting taxes--in the context, it's a very good question, and not putting words in anybody's mouth. His reaction is telling.

There is a good article from Matt Taibbi in Rollng Stone on polls and the media's role in all this bullshit. It is an interesting new way to look at how the US runs it's presidential election and how screwed up it is, something I think we can all agree with. Robme has been publicly campaigning for years, Ryan hasn't, not on a national level. He is stuck with his entire career as "budget wizard" in Congress now having to debate with Robme's latest lies against Biden, a seasoned politician with the facts on his side.
ReplyDeleteThis interview is just a hint of what is sure to come, if I were Ryan....I would suggest wearing some Depends cause he is gonna be krappin in his pants. Just think of a few of Ryan's lies, the GM plant closing and his marathon time...he hopefully will lose his congressional seat too. I think it is really funny a movie about "Atlas Shrugged" coming out before the election...another whopper for Ryan to explain.

ReplyDeleteSeeing it in context on Rachel's show just proves that the reporter was actually doing his job. And of course, the handlers tried to blame the media. The question was perfectly fair and should have been expected.
