20 states threatening to secede after President Obama reelection. Aww, did somebody get their widdle feelings hurt?

You know this weekend my daughter flew down to Georgia to spend the winter with her mom and her sisters, since much of the movie work she has been doing up here will dry up until spring.

We had a great last couple of days together, attending the new James Bond movie "Skyfall" and getting take out from the newly opened Olive Garden here on our side of town. (I loved both the movie and the food by the way.)

And then the next day, Sunday she flew dout of here around 4:00 P.M. our time.

I kid you not, she was in Georgia no more than eight hours before I received THIS text:

"Oh my god. what am I doing here? These people are fucking crazy!"

That statement was accompanied by this link:

It's been less than a week since the nation re-elected President Barack Obama, giving the Commander in Chief another four years in office. Unsurprisingly, the election's outcome didn't please everyone. But rather than simply deal with the results, however, thousands of Georgians have decided that they would rather secede from the United States.

Yes, you read that right. Political blog Georgia Tipsheet - run by occasional CL contributor James Richardson - pointed out this morning that over 6,000 people have signed two similar petitions. Both have asked for the Obama administration to allow the Peach State to leave the United States so that it could form its own independent government.

Seriously? I guess so much for that whole bipartisan approach to working together for the good of the country thing, right?

Now as most of us know Georgia is in NO position to run their own government, and this is clearly nothing more than a very public temper tantrum by a group of  dipshits that simply cannot handle the idea that they just had their asses handed to them in the election.

However before you mock Georgia as a state full of whiny little bitches, perhaps you should read this:

Louisiana became the first of the (as of now) 50 united states that managed to collect enough signatures to have their petition for secession added to the White House’s website last week, and so far they’ve had no problem finding company. A petition asking for the government to “Peacefully grant the State of Louisiana to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government” garnered more than 14,000 signatures since going live on November 7, and so far 19 other states have managed to attract similar success.

According to the terms of participation on WhiteHouse.gov, the website for the executive branch of the United States will make any petition searchable if it can collect 150 signatures within one months’ time, and collecting 25,000 signatures will necessitate an official response. So far Texas seems to be in the running to be the first state to receive a response from the commander-in-chief, with 21,777 signees asking for secession since their petition went live on November 9, barely 48 hours after US President Barack Obama claimed a victory in his bid for re-election.

In all, 20 states have so far broken the 150 signature threshold, mostly sticking closely to the script included in the first petition published by “Michael E” of Slidell, LA, who quotes the Declaration of Independence in his plea to once again separate the public from a power that, according to thousands of residents, doesn’t represent what is best for the people anymore.

You know part of me wants to simply say "good riddance" and let these assholes TRY and form their own country without the monetary support from Uncle Sam, ESPECIALLY since many of them take more in government money than they pay out in taxes. However of course that is not really an option, and besides my daughter would be trapped in one of those southern fried cuckoo's nests.

Besides I imagine that this reaction to Obama's reelection is much like when a small child threatens to hold their breath until they pass out. The best thing to do is call their bluff because they have to breathe eventually, and besides we know that, even though they have covered their mouths with their hands, they are actually faking it and still breathing through their noses.

God this country is just chock full of ignorant people. I just hope those Georgia inbreds don't get any of their stupid on my kid.

    5. Over 25K signatures. Then what?

The President will respond with "No". He does not need to elaborate. Case closed.

Then it's their move again. Will they ride their pickup trucks over to Washington, DC and open fire on the White House? I'd love to see that happen. #ScorchedEarth

I guess now they see how we felt when Bush got re-elected, and how did that work out for us? At least I didn't pitch a hissy fit, I just got on with my life and waiting for a real President. GOT ONE!!! Yea.

  5. Keep in mind that these petitions are not originated by the state. They are online petitions started by people who are likely upset at the outcome of the election. I really don't expect anything to come of this. I'm more worried about random violent acts by unhinged wingnut types who got snookered by Fox News.

Why are they so upset now that he only has four more years? Seems they would have tried this when it was possible(hurray) that he might have 8 years.

I agree with your daughter. They really are fucking crazy! Just how do they think they can survive? Who would pay all those people who are on "disability" if they secede? I think the govt. should cross reference the signatures and take those lazy bastards off immediately. How will they maintain roads and a myriad of other things that the govt subsidizes? A good many people in Georgia are farmers...go to that site that tells you how much they make in govt. subsidies..and if you find their names on the petition, cut that aid too.

I was planning to take a trip to Georgia this Spring, but think I will reconsider..don't want them to make a penny of money off of me. Damn..I am running out of vacations sites...crossed Alaska off 4 years ago and now Texas and Georgia.

How does the list of 20 states compare to that map you showed us yesterday of the states who had slaves?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anonymous7:43 AM

That "disability" claim you just made is the reason so many Georgians are wanting to secede in the first place. Under Obama's term as President, he has relentlessly sought to expand the reach and size of the federal welfare state. Increasing the amount by 19% since he took office and almost reaching the point of $1 trillion dollars today. Now that is in fact why many of people are fed up with the taxation policies, not the farmers you are blaming. And to that point, farmers make up about a tenth of the population in Georgia, if that.

I did not support Romney nor Obama, but all the comments on this page as just as ignorant as the people they're accusing as well. It's just on the opposite end of the spectrum, so it's considered being "open minded' when in fact it is the same beast different colors.

Hasn't Alaska had an active group trying to do just this for many years? Weren't/aren't the Palin family members of that group (the one that Todd just "accidently" marked on his ballot..for 7 years). I remember seeing a video of Sarah welcoming their convention with open arms (and wearing a butt ugly outfit).
I read a funny comment on that article that said that we should allow Georgia to leave and let Puerto Rico take their place, so we wouldn't have to have new flags made.
I also read that it would make it life "fun" because everyone who flew out of Altanta airport would have to show passports etc. since they would be a foreign country.

NY will always be blue. And NY will never, ever leave the union. That's just such a silly thought.

So sign your petition. I'll continue to get my discounted birth control shot, be the maid of honor as my best friend marries his long time boyfriend, and go to sleep every night with a smile on my face that my late term abortion was 100% completely covered by the state when I didn't have health insurance.

In general if the South wants to secede I say good riddance. The take way more taxes then they pay (moochers!) I'm sick of paying for their quasi-theocracy, their ignorant, backward views and their militarism. And their bad, historically inaccurate textbooks.

Dozens Of Secession Petitions Hit White House

The White House website explains of the review process for petitions that get 25,000 signatures in a 30 day period: "If a petition meets the signature threshold, it will be reviewed by the Administration and we will issue a response."

States where residents have filed secession petitions include: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

(The list above has been updated to include petitions filed by residents in additional states since this post was published.)

Ultimately, secession efforts are nothing new. Below, a look back at previous attempts.

Nope. No state is participating and none will. There are a very few **people** in those states who think that petitioning the White House is the way to secede from the union. I think most Southerners, whether they voted for Romney or Obama would agree that the idea of seceding from the Union is ridiculous. But seriously folks, lay off the name calling. Makes you no better than them; burning off frustration with childish behavior most of you claim to abhor in the next breath. Despite my disagreement with those of you who have basically called me and my children idiots and worse based on geography, and with those who have expressed the wish to secede, I would fight for your right to do so. Gotta love the First Amendment. Besides, here in NC, our beaches are like a Jersey Shore episode in the summer. Heck, a lot of folks who visit from the frigid North never leave. Not that we mind....because the VAST majority of us are fairly nice, regular folks trying to make a dime, keep a roof over our families' heads, and occasionally, have a little fun. And to the guy who wrote about his daughter's trip to Atlanta...she shouldn't make a snap judgement. Give Atlanta a chance...it's a great city with a lot of great people. There are around 10 million people in Georgia; 6000 of them are misguided but not a majority. See, they do teach us math in the South...it's right after the compulsory banjo lessons.

      Delete
    2. I know how you feel, Deb. b/c we sure have our share in the great state of TN, also. But lots of good ones, too. Just like its not fair to say all Alaskans are like the Palins, I don't want to be labeled the same as some of the doofuses around here. Neighborhood covenants, building codes and zoning restrictions keep them a far enough distance away that I don't have to look at them most of the time. So they turn up on Fox News and the Internet instead.

It's hard to get away entirely from being exposed to ignorance unless you have a private island without cable access and don't read periodicals. There aren't many islands around here, and if there were, it would probably be a budget-buster, anyway. Thankfully, I find some of the nonsense these folks to to be somewhat entertaining (to a point), just as I enjoy being around children with lively imaginations.

There will always be some of that "South will rise again" mentality in some of the population because they feel a need to hold onto something in the past that they think was "better" that what they have at present. Thank goodness it's not my job to convince anyone to get out of the 1950's or the 1860's to live in the 21st century with us. A lot of times, all you can do is ignore stupidity, because if you get down and rassle with the pigs, it's hard not to get dirty, too.

Trying to educate someone with facts that are conflict with their "beliefs" is often futile and a time trap to boot. Let them have their fantasy. It will end similar to the way things turned out when I ran away from home when I was about 7 or 8 because I didn't get my way about something. After announcing that I was moving out because my younger brother got all of the cool toys and all of the attention, I made it almost to the end of the street with my suitcase before it started getting heavy, so I stopped on the curbside to rest. Then I remembered I forgot to pack a lunch. You know how the rest of the story goes.

The secession plan of these people never gets to step #2: Now that we've seceded, what do we do now? We were all 7 at one time. Some of us still are acting that way years later. Bless their hearts.

I felt sick when I read about this concerned about the outrage.

A friend brought up the fiscal cliff today. I commented that I am not opposed to tax rates returning to precut rates considering Romney paid only 14%. She was irate repeating Romney that we hate success, are angry about capitalism, against making money and tax rates do not matter for Romney paid more in taxes then most people.

She was adamant believing Obama voters hate success, wealth insisting the campaign convinced us of this. She angrily defended it is about wealthy paying more regardless of their income and percentage tax rates. Plus her ire of charitable donations doing good is more money given!

Romney conned her of that. Excuse me but there
are tax rates that rise based on income brackets.

I get pissed off hearing talking points Obama incrued and ran up the deficit ruining the country.

Yes, Darden Restaurants join the whambulance over Obamacare too. Actually, they've been whining about it for a couple of years but now they're getting serious. Like Papa John's, Darden Restaurants is public but owned by bankers and hedge funds to the tune of about 84 percent.

Darden's solution to the problem is to cut employees' hours to under the minimum required to provide health insurance because they just will not tolerate the idea of actually doing something that might cost them a little bit in order for employees to live happier, healthier lives

By the way, Darden is forecasting annual growth of 12 percent. But no Obamacare for their employees, because that might reduce the big profits down to 11.8 percent or something!

"What I want to know is how these Georgia secessionist expect to survive since they'll have to form international treaties with the rest of the United States JUST TO LEAVE THEIR STATE! Which means, all those flights from Atlanta to wherever outside GA now become International flights. Also, they'll no longer have the big bad federal government giving them money for stuff like, the interstate highways, bridges and roads, medicare, medicaid and social security. So all those folks getting Social security checks must either leave the state of GA or GA must take over payments. Same with Medicare/Medicaid. Lets not forget the small matter of food. Since there are many food items not grown in GA (potatoes and tomatoes come to mind) Y'all are gonna just have to make do with your GA peaches. Oh, wait. Most Peaches actually come from South Carolina so we are cool. Keep the peaches you grow. "

Think any of them thought that far ahead? Of course not, that would take brains. And the South wants to curb education.

ARRRGH! Unfortunately when you look at the map, there is this little appendix to the continent on the South-Eastern End.
    It is called Florida.
Yes, there are those who have not entered the Twenty-First Century, but those of us who did, showed them last week that they are in the minority, however slim.
Would the Secessionists make an island nation of us? Collect user fees when we cross the roads into Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi as was done in medieval Europe's fiefdoms?
    Is insanity contagious?
    Just wondering!
This is one of the multi-ethnic/multi-cultural
states that define this great nation for better, for worse, and I hope we will survive intact.

I'm happy to see Florida being reasonable, however there is the slight problem of climate warming sea level increase and it won't be nice for Florida. I feel bad for those of you on the coast that will be driven inland by 2050 due to a possible increase of 20'. Inland Florida is where the crazies reside, but I guess if the reasonable have to move inland and hang with the crazies then perhaps there will still be equilibrium in FL. Florida is near and dear to my heart as I spent a bit of my youth in Sarasota and Key West. I still store that sunshine somewhere inside of me during the AK winters :-)

I looked at the petition for the state of Michigan at https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions.
I found it interesting that a lot of the signatures were from out-of-state, maybe the same people are signing all the petitions, seriously how can you ask for a state to leave the nation if you don't even live there?

      1) Well, I can think of several states of which I'd be happy to ask that they leave the US.

      2) Michigan? I live in Michigan and I haven't heard of this! Now, granted, the UP, where I live, periodically makes noises about seceding from the rest of Michigan (and sometimes startling Cheeseheads by also deciding to annex to Wisconsin), but not from the US!

Is there ANY state that can't find 25,000 racist, bigoted a$$holes who voted for Romney?

I think they'd need to find some pretty good reasons besides "we didn't win so we're mad." Like "stop bombing our villages" or "you're not giving us our share of the federal money" or you know, something legitimate.

Good luck with that, sore losers. Can't wait to hear what the result of it is, though. Especially interested to hear if the governors of those states in question make statements having to repudiate those jerks knowing full well that there is no possible way that they could survive on their own. I know that Alaska likes to imagine that they can make it on their own because of big oil and all of that, yeah, I'd like to see how well that would work out for them, forming their own government and getting shafted by the oil companies. I'd laugh & laugh. And I can't wait for the blue Governors to tell those idiots "shut up & sit down, fools, most of us voted for the President."

The great thing about getting at least Texas to secede would be that it would become a magnet for the lunatics in other states and the reasonable people there would leave. Having just escaped an unfortunate Texas sojourn I can attest that most of the creatures living in that hell hole that are human don't offer much of anything to the rest of humanity. Actually, characterizing many of them as fully human is a bit of a stretch. Just imagine if all of the nutters decided that foul hole was their paradise. How much nicer would the rest of the country get? Of course the moment Texas got out they would get real poor and be a shitty third-world country, which is sort of how it is there anyhow, but we'd refuse to allow them back. Having renounced their citizenship they'd be stuck and the rest of the states of the South could look to them as an example. Of course it wouldn't have to be Texas, but there is lots of room there for extra morons.

Gryphen, perhaps you should change the title to "a handful of people in 20 states threatening . . ." It's important to note that the states themselves haven't done a thing, and never will. Individual citizens petitioning the White House will never get them anywhere. They could try to petition their *own states* to try to convince others to secede, I suppose. As it stands, their petitions will go absolutely nowhere. Georgia has over 9 million people. 6,000 represents .06% (not 6% -- .06%) of the citizens of the state of Georgia. Texas has 25 million people. 21,777 represents .08% of the citizens in that state. These numskulls are a very tiny portion of U.S. citizens.

Just think of the fun they'll have electing their first rill president. So many wonderful choices: Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Ryan, Trump, Gingrich, and Palin. How will they ever decide from among those luminaries? I don't think Romney will secede; he hasn't quite developed a taste for grits and things yet and the trees may not be quite the right height.

Oh oh.... even money can't buy Romney loyalty and friends! They're dropping like flies!

If losing the presidential election wasn't enough, Mitt Romney has been hemorrhaging Facebook friends.
People began unliking Romney's official Facebook page soon after the election results came in last week. The Washington Post noticed the drop on Friday, when the GOP presidential candidate's page was losing 593 likes an hour.
By Saturday, Mashable said the exodus was up to 847 friends an hour, and as of Monday morning, Romney's Facebook page continued to lose around 11 likes every minute.
For those who enjoy interactive graphics with their schadenfreude, the site DisappearingRomney.com shows Romney's Facebook likes dropping in real time. A ticker at the bottom of the page tallies how many people have unliked Romney's page just in the time users have been on the site.
Not that Romney is hurting for social media pals. As of Monday afternoon, he still had more than 12 million Facebook fans and 1.7 million followers on Twitter.
The former governor's team hasn't been doing much on social media lately to persuade people to stick around. After a flurry of activity leading up to the election, his official Facebook and Twitter accounts went silent for four days afterward. On Saturday, the campaign finally posted a photo of a sad-looking Romney with the message, "From the bottom of our hearts, Ann and I thank you for your support, prayers, efforts and vote. We are forever grateful to every one of you."
By contrast, President Barack Obama acknowledged his victory last week with a pair of posts on Twitter and Facebook that quickly went viral. And his social media accounts have been active in the week since the election.
Romney's recent silence extends to his running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, whose campaign's Twitter account has not been updated since the election. However, Ryan did update his personal (pre-campaign) Twitter and Facebook pages with two Veterans Day posts over the weekend.
The official Republican National Committee's Facebook page has also been quiet since Election Day, when it reposted a thank you to Romney from GOP Chairman Reince Priebus.
After Obama was first elected four years ago, his official Twitter, Facebook and, yes, MySpace pages (it was 2008, after all) went quiet for a time.
One explanation is that the staffers who manage these accounts either move on or are typically given new responsibilities after an election. It's unlikely that Obama or Romney were posting to Facebook and Twitter very often themselves.

    Dear Red States,

We're ticked off at the way you've treated California, and we've decided we're leaving.

We intend to form our own country, and we're taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast, we will even ask Florida, now that they've come to their senses and got rid of Alan West.

We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.

    To sum up briefly:

You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.

We get stem cell research and the best beaches.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get WalMart.

We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.

We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.

We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You get Alabama.

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Afghanistan at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners) 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia, btw...and as an added bonus you can take Scarah Palin with you.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals than we lefties.

By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

    Sincerely,

The Bluest of Blue States CA xoxoxoxoxxo and as they say in LA , Adios Amigos!

They want a response from the very reason they're asking to secede.

And you don't ask permission to secede. You do it. You take it. You cannot give liberty and freedom to anyone, they must take it for themselves. It's how this country was founded (and the mistakes we make over and over in the middle east.)

Without Iowa and Nebraska, you can kiss that cheap sugar goodbye and here is no way that we're going to sell our subsidized corn to a bunch of racist traitors. Faced with the choice between profits and southern pride, I'm pretty sure you can kiss Coca Cola goodbye. And Pepsi. CNN would move to New York. The CDC would relocate to the real United States. Is Delta based in Atlanta? Yeah, not once you leave. That's already a few hundred thousand jobs gone. So much for being the "fourth largest" economy.

I haven't seen or spoken to a rational Republican who understood and believed in such things as math and science in 20 years. Where are they?

They're not going anywhere, they're stuck in the first stage of grief, which is "WTF?? We LOST?", they've whipped themselves into a frenzy, are hungry, sleep deprived and smell bad.

A good hose down, some bottles, a good burping, diaper change and long nap will fix them.

I hear you. I was raised in Montgomery, Alabama and to this day the white locals call it "monkeytown" due to all the N's there. Yes, they still use the N word but they do now days watch what company they use the N word in. Just last week my old friend from Jr. High asked me when I was ever going to move back to "monkeytown" and of course I told her NEVER!

LOL what a bunch of frickin' cry babies. Speaking of cry babies..........I can see that picture of Palin curled up on the floor in the movie Game Change. Her meme is passe', she's stymied, she has no clue what to do since nobody wants to hear her hate speeches and the same old thing she's been repeating for the last 4 years scamming the public for her VanityPAC. Everything one-liner Palin says is so old, and in fact she's looking pretty damn old. The only new idea she had was to call the dutch & stick a finger in the dyke for the oil spill lol. Maybe she should move to Georgia? I hear the KKK is accepting new memberships.

Someone needs to remind these state leaders and their crazy populations that if they secede from the United States they will lose 1) all federal money and program aid that now comes to their states, 2) all military bases and other federal installations, 3) all help in the future when natural disasters occur, 4) all protections from military invasion or terrorist activity, and 5) all protections now afforded them by federal government agencies (FAA, FDA, EPA, etc.). They would be on their own. I really wish that the leaders of the Republican Party would simply grow up.

    Gryphen,
Could you do a post on this info? IMO, this is THE issue of the last campaign and THE reason the rich, elite Repubs ran Romney, although it was never, ever talked about openly. Repubs are TERRIFIED of this law, set to take effect 1/1/13, but which has been delayed to 2014 due to the complexity of it. Obama is a genius for naming the law the way he did, FATCA (almost called FATCAT)! Here it is from irs.gov... but google it for yourself, it's fascinating:

Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA)

The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) is an important development in U.S. efforts to improve tax compliance involving foreign financial assets and offshore accounts.

Under FATCA, U.S. taxpayers with specified foreign financial assets that exceed certain thresholds must report those assets to the IRS. This reporting will be made on Form 8938, which taxpayers attach to their federal income tax return, starting this tax filing season.

In addition, FATCA will require foreign financial institutions to report directly to the IRS information about financial accounts held by U.S. taxpayers, or held by foreign entities in which U.S. taxpayers hold a substantial ownership interest.

It certainly looks like something rich people like Mitt Romney might want to avoid. However, the purpose is probably less to annoy rich people than to track money going to terrorist or to organized crime organizations.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous7:28 AM

No, they already follow terrorist money very closely, ever since 9/11. The purpose of this law is the estimated $21 trillion deposited in foreign countries that are declared "tax havens". If a US citizen with a SS number fails to report a foreign account, they are subjected to a 30% penalty, AND the US gov. has secured cooperation from our allies. No more secret Swiss bank accounts. The law has real teeth in it, and any American or hedge fund manager in Bermuda is running scared of this law. They were hoping Romney could overturn it.

You got to be kidding me SC. Last time we did this, it resulted in one of the most bloody battles in America with the most casualties. Oh, and FYI, WE LOST last time. Are we really gonna pull that crap again? Head back down that road? Quit being such babies about who's in the office. In all truth, the most power they hold is to veto something they don't want happening (no offense to the president). If you want to be pissed at somebody, be pissed at Congress, so far it seems like they hold the most power. Just pull together as a nation and fix what needs to be fixed, quit wasting time, crying about who's in the office.

Spencer, I couldn't agree more. And I also feel the same embarrassment you do about being a "southerner". I sometimes wonder if the "carpetbaggers" ever left. (BTW, I was 4 when my father was transferred to SC for DuPont.)

It is DEFINITELY Congress at fault. I hear that from BOTH sides. Unfortunately, the obvious solution won't happen - term limits. The Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate should NOT have the almost god-like powers they have. They don't like a bill? They don't bring it to the floor for a vote. Some Democracy.

Why do I say it will be a cold day in Hell before it happens? As far as I know, there are only two ways to get a Constitutional Amendment heard: A call from the majority in Congress or two thirds of the Governors call for it.

CONGRESS is NOT going to put themselves out of a job and the Governors want to GET those jobs! So no amendment.

Unless someone can tell me about another legal way?

Honestly, I just feel bad for the people living in the states threatening to secede who don't even want to secede. They must feel embarrased about their states like I do. Personally, I don't blame the states as a whole, I blame the people in the states who are embarrasing everyone else and making them look bad. Not everyone in these states threatening to secede want to secede. I find that these threats are just a vent for pissed off people who have nothing else to b**ch at. They probably don't even want to follow through with their threats but just want something to blame and complain at.

  73. Obviously, you liberals forget that the democrats were the first to leave the union. That started the civil war. And I am hearing alot of gloating over an election won by literally by fractions of a point. Which shows that there are alot of entitled people in this country. People that want to keep their welfare, food stamps, obama phone and any other "free stuff" they can get. But remember that bill still has to be paid.....but not by you right? Americans getting killed by terrorists, covered up by Obama and his crew. Employers already handing layoff slips out. Our medical care will hit rock bottom(just look at Canada...seriously). And illegals taking the few jobs we have left. Thats right, just let us red neck, bible thumping, gun carrying conservatives leave this whithering nation and what happens, happens. But remember a couple things when you sit around stroking each others egos.......Half the country voted against you, and we own all the guns....bitches!!!!?

Um, you do know there is a difference between the Southern Democrats of the 1800s and the modern Democrats, right?

And, yeah, you don't own all the guns.

President Obama didn't win "literally by fractions of a point." He won the popular votes by about 2.5 percentage points. If Hurricane Sandy hadn't hit and negatively affected voter turnout in decidedly blue states, he'd have won by even a greater margin.

And, by the way, we'll be waiting for all the people who voted against President Obama to voluntarily give up their government "hand outs." And if any of them have pre-existing conditions, I'm sure, on principle, they'll opt out of insurance rather than take advantage of a government mandate that prevents insurance companies from rejecting.

Secession petitions are good PR but bad politics. There is a way for states to legally and politically secede from the American union but it must be a state-by-state process established by constitutional secession conventions in each state. First, I'm a woman and second, I lived for five years in a Red southern state and saw for myself all the poor white people on the welfare rolls who voted for Republicans. Either you didn't comprehend my statement you quoted or you're choosing not to acknowledge the truth about your fellow "conservatives."

And, for the record, I don't get "hand outs" (what a stupid phrase). My husband and I earn our money, take care of our children, pay our mortgage, and enjoy the fruits of our tax dollars at work--safe highways and streets, great public schools, lots of dedicated open space, etc.--in our Blue state.

I don't think you understand the meaning of the word "puppets." You've been convinced by the small group of people who command the overwhelming percentage of wealth that poor people are picking your pockets. How convenient for Romney and his fat cat buddies.

In my opinion the people who are choosing to sign these petitions are completely ignorant of the possible outcomes. Even if they do succeed in garnering enough signatures to gain attention by the White House, and President Obama does for some unknown reason grants them the ability to secede, they wouldn't last any time at all. However, it is not fair to assume that all people in those states want the same thing. I for example associate myself with a more conservative side of the political spectrum, however the re-election of a president is not something worth seceding over. If the majority of a country votes for him, they obviously think he is the best candidate. He might not be the best president, but of the two he may have the best chance to actually be the president. So while it is stupid that people are trying to secede, it's also stupid to assume that everyone in those states want the same thing.

It is intresting to listen to all you exstreamests ranting and raving on this blog about the election and the desires of different states to sceede from the government,
what no one here has bothered to look at yet is the fact that when you take the welth and redistribute it you run into a real problem, that is the fact that people (right or left) will not continue to work hard if they can get the same money for free, (just human nature) it is a real bumb deal because those of us who have pride in earning our own money will be crushed under the burden of all the takers, marxisem and socialisem looks great on papper but it never works,
have you ever seen the (don't feed the bears) signs? they are there because if you feed them they become dependent.
Another thing is, if the government continues to increase the taxes on the 1% (who already pay the majorety of all taxes) they will look to invest their money elsewhere where they don't get so heavily taxed for it, and as a result unemployment increases and the gap widens between classes, eventualy creating a 2 class system 1% welthy and 99% poor.
Another thing everyone is missing here is the obamacare issue, I'v heard that it takes months and months on a waiting list in canada to get any kind of medical attention, that is exactly where we will be in a few years, yes it will be free but you may be dead before you get it, it is all one big sick joke, most every one who pays for insurance now will drop it in lue of a cheaper government bennifet and every one who can't afford insurance will have it for free and suddenly our quality of health care goes to hell in a hand basket, if there is no $ incentive to be in the medical field and no $ incentive to acell above others in your profession then the over all quality will decrease and our base of medical personall will decrease while the patient base doubles and tripples.
I don't see the states ever being able to sceede from the union but if they do . . . the thing no noe here has considered is the fact that 82% of our military personall are conservitave and another thing is someone forgot about that old saying that goes (possesion is nine tenths of the law), so if a state pulls out it will be keeping its military bases and everything else federaly funded which also means that the funds it pays out to the fed will stop too and go twords the state itself instead.

sadly none of this will ever happen until we have reached a complete economic colapse, which sadly looks like it is just around the corner if we the people keep up with what we are doing right now.

peddle to the metal, obama is driving, euopean socialisem here we come. we are gona be just like greease before this reign of terror is over.

FYI "china wont let an investment self distruct" chew on that for a minuet, has it sunk in yet?
