And this from the AP:

All six adults killed at the school were women. Of the 20 children who were shot to death, eight were boys and 12 were girls. All the children were ages 6 or 7.

Also despite initial reports. which seem to have been almost universally incorrect, we now know that the killer used  a semi-automatic to kill all of the people he killed in that school.

I don't know if learning these new details helps in any way, or simply causes more tears to flow, however I offer it up in the hopes that knowing it will help us to work through our confusion and our pain.

  1. Gryphen---past 24 hours constantly listening to news and constantly wiping tears. Cannot wrap our heads around this heinous crime. Mixture of grief and anger. Aner towards shit heads like Huckabee who say this would be prevented by more god in schools, angry at the m-f's that say if we had MORE guns in schools they would kill the shooter first. As I heard a former FBI agent "action is faster than reaction", so packing a gun in a class room won't work.

Having teachers carry guns will not solve anything. I feel the best way to prevent this type of tragic shooting again, is thru security.

If every school had a metal detector stationed with a security guard (armed or unarmed) for adults who did not have school issued identification cards (for teachers and other school employees) to pass through, I feel this would be adequate enough to stop an armed attacker.

This method is nonintrusive, and the process is fairly quick.

No admittance without passing thru the metal detector, after which they will be issued a visitors pass, which must be affixed in a visible spot at all times:

      How crazy is this?
Having to keep schoolchildren confined in a high security area as if they were in jail? How can one expect them to develop into normal adults???
increased security is a symptomatic cure but does not solve any problems.

How would that help? Someone armed with a semi automatic will walk right through a metal detector, then right over the dead guard.

From Morgan Freeman, listing the names:

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Every news cycle that reports this trama should start out with these words...
"Adam Lanza the coward who went to an elementary school and killed defenseless women and children." Any "sad nobody" out there looking for glory won't want to be called a coward. Then they should move on and do highlight pieces on each of the victims...
      But it won't happen...

Thanks Gryphen. Like millions I've been wiping tears and it makes the holidays sad but even more grateful for our children who we will hug even tighter. Yesterday I got to hug my son tighter who I didn't get to see for the last 6 months. We are all hugging tighter now.

I just have been absolutely floored by the ignorant right-wing nutters' comments online that Obama is looking for an academy award with his "fake tears" and using this horrific situation as yet another photo-op. I'm glad we have freedom of speech. Freedom of speech allows the world to see how effed up these people and the GOPtea party nut extremists are. I heard something on the news about how the shooter's mother (whose guns he used) was some type of "survivalist" believing the world is going to end. Soon as more evidence comes out all will come to light. It's all so ironic and very sad.

The love of money is truly the root of all evil. We have the wing-nuts who insist on photo i.d. for the right to vote. We have GOP governors who will change laws to cheat. We have lobbyists & politicians that can be bought and paid for. Their greed affects millions of lives. They make their own pay raises but can't even pass a law for equal pay for women?

I am happy, very happy to see that in my lifetime that the Koch $, corporate welfare, the GOP supreme court & their 24/7 news station of hate faux "news" LOST!!!!! We The People have spoken. The more these haters hate & speak about it, the more they show us what they truly are about. Keep shouting your voice secessionists and false "patriots". Let's not forget that's where Todd & Sarah's hearts truly lie.

  6. So many tears, so much heartbreak. I just can't process it anymore. I cannot imagine the grief that those families are experiencing and the effects of the trauma on the first responders, police, etc. that were at the scene.

President Obama will meet with the families and emergency workers tomorrow. I am sure that, in his wisdom, he will convey my feelings and the feeling of all Americans to all those involved. We all must do whatever we can to prevent this from ever happening again. The time is now.

If deranged mentally ill people with guns can't get in schools they will just pick another target. Shopping malls, theaters, work places, etc. will all have to have metal detectors which are not the complete solution but only a part of it. In the 80's because of politicians' laws thousands upon thousands of mentally ill people were let out and the explosion of homeless people begin. It's going to take a combination of "solutions" and my opinion is that we close the gun show loopholes that allow people to have unregistered weapons, ban assault weapons, mandatory background checks AND photo i.d. on anyone purchasing a gun FOR STARTERS.

  9. This makes me sick!!!

    from Right Wing Watch...
Bryan Fischer (American Family Association) spent the first hour of his radio program today discussing this morning's truly horrific shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut, which he, of course, blamed on the fact that prayer, the Bible, and the Ten Commandments are not taught in public schools.

Fischer said that God could have protected the victims of this massacre, but didn't because "God is not going to go where he is not wanted" and so if school administrators really want to protect students, they will start every school day with prayer:

I think that we need to keep an eye on who Fischer and The AFA endorse in 2014. People don't have the stomach for this kind of talk anymore.

We need to open a meaningful national discussion on mental health. I think this qualifies, but not sure what label it would fall under.

This shooter was a young man. I know that they say that these guns were registered to his mother. Why would she want an automatic rifle?

I can't help but think back to Kip Kinkle, whose father bought him the guns he used in the shooting spree at Springfield High School.

I know I could be wrong, and I know that we may never know. My opinion is that at the very best this was a straw buy of guns by the mother.

What we've learned from this horrible incident is:
Regardless of how serious the story is; it's more important for news channels to be first than it is for them to be correct.

Now that we have the names of the latest victims, let get the names and profiles of the last 20 mass murderers. Profile all the demographics of who the perpetrators are to get a picture of why these murderers are that are killing our kids, teachers, moms, congresswomen, shoppers, moviegoers, etc. What do most of these people LOOK LIKE? After we find out what they look like then let’s see if there is a common thread that may lead to a solution. Identify the evil or devil or whatever you want to call it and isolate it so we all know who the real enemy is and who we are dealing with in America.
