Seems fair.

By the way if you think I ma being too harsh, then read this story and tell me if you still feel the same way.

The NYT article you link to does not mention that her death was due in part to her intestines being shredded by the iron rod the rapists used.

The "provoked" argument used to be used here in the US too, some years ago. "Men have their needs." Anyone who buys that is complete garbage in my mind.

Such a parallel in my mind between this male insistence to attack women as they please, and the incredible tantrums the NRA folks are going through so they can keep their toys and play with them as they please. So what if a few people (children, the innocent) get shot?? I have my needs! Waaaaaaa! I want my guns.

If men's needs are that urgent then they can just fuck each other. Happens anyway.

Evidently, the Roman Catholic Church concurs with the rapists:

You must have reading comprehension issues. That was in the article.

I had been following this story...

The woman was with her boyfriend waiting at a bus stop when this vehicle (I believe it was a small charter bus) pulled up and told them that they were going to the same destination and offered them a ride. They were both beaten, the woman was raped by all the assailants and then with an iron rod. They were then both thrown naked onto the roadside and left. There was protesting and outrage for days - one policeman was killed. The woman was transferred to a hospital under great secrecy - they actually had to use decoys to get her out safely. Her body was damaged so severely by the metal rod that her intestines had to be removed - she had brain injuries as well. I haven't heard about the fate of her boyfriend.

A prominent Indian female scientist came out saying that it was because of provocative clothing and that she had no business being out at 10:00 at night anyway. She was late forced to give one of those "non-apologies".

I'll never agree that violence needs to be stopped by more violence, but then I'm not an American.

The animals that did this deed are nothing like the Indian men I have known. They have all been intelligent, caring and peaceful individuals as well as great friends.

My thoughts about the punishment is perhaps returning to the use of stocks, or perhaps just a public execution. That should send a message.

Balzafiar, as with ALL groups, there are good and there are, um, not-so-good.

And I have been an advocate for public hanging for over fifty years! And the nicest thing is that it can't be called unconstitutional since people were being hanged as punishment while our founding fathers were writing the Constitution! If they felt it was "cruel and unusual" they would have written that out clearly.

Some people just need to be eliminated. And if the bleeding hearts want to save someone from that fate, let THEM pay for the care and upkeep - without ME!

  5. This whole situation in India is so ghastly that words fail. I think it’s why people invented a devil; they had to blame something other than their brothers, fathers, uncles, cousins, and occasionally, mothers. Ever read Sybil?

Working alone on computers one weekend (not unusual), and thinking I was the only person in the building except the guard by the front door, I looked up to see a man staring at me. I didn’t know him well, but he was thought of as “nice.” Now, however, he seemed to be in a trance, and I knew I was in danger. All I had for protection was an Exacto knife. Luckily, he’d arrived with a friend. The friend walked into the room, grasped the situation, and dragged the “nice” man away from me. I was dressed in loose weekend jeans and sweatshirt.

Sexual deviance seems to be hardwired, sometimes even in “nice” people, and I have no solution except extra caution.

  6. Some will dislike me for what I am about to type...but unless you have been there you will never know.
These men must not only be castrated, they must also have their penis removed, along with both hands. Why?

They have proven to society that they are incapable of compassion towards fellow human beings, therefore should hold nothing in their own hands.
As for the penis, well that speaks for it self and according to some men are controlled independently, it's guilt lies with that women for eternity, yet women are still capable of loving.

Am I wrong for thinking justice, when justice lies with GOD?...NO, for if there were a GOD, this horrendous crime wouldn't have entered his grand plan. Man has let these crimes go unpunished with 2-10 yr sentences...pfft what if a woman snipped a penis off? Why not ask Lorena Bobbitt?

Have they found the men who assaulted this woman and her friend? And what will happen to them if they are caught? Will India's government have the power and the will to prosecute these men to the fullest extent?

I believe six people have been charged with murder in her death.

Agreed that there are many fine men and women in India. But it is also true that women are viewed in that culture as serving men.

(In our culture too, in a different way, and esp in the past. And, as we saw in the nutty yet pervasive talk in the last election, many feel it's right to deny women civil rights that men would be outraged to lose.)

I heard from someone that what happened saddened but not shocked her. She said she was harassed, groped, smacked, etc on public transport. She told about a time she was on an overnight train and men would reach through the curtain to cop a feel. There were even men who took a woman from her bunk and were surprised when other (foreign) men intervened- they didn't see why they had an issue with it. If a culture sees these things as 'normal,' it's easy to see how things like this terrible situation happen.

Here's one from the good old US of A:

Not quite as horrific in terms of damage to the victims, but mentally just as bad.

Unfortunately rape has no borders, India's rape stats are 1/6th of those of the USA. I am happy so many are outraged by this and maybe we can begin by changing things here first.

I wonder if it is because so many rapes in India go unreported?

    2. Anonymous6:37 PM

Read the linked article. The reason they are 1/6th is because women are reluctant to report because of the way they aretreated by police. This is what the election of an Akin or a Mourdock (or others who agree with them) in the US would take us back to.

MOst rapes are not reported in the US either.

No, you're not being too harsh. This vile "excuse" for rape goes on in all cultures to one extent, or another. That priest post the other day, Malala got shot in the head, and this woman died ONLY because some men are so insecure in their own masculinity, that they react with violence.

Those who deny there's a "war" on women need to read that sign, better yet, get it tattooed on their favorite body part, in capital letters, bold font, italicized and underlined.

Do you think I'm being too harsh?
