Shooting at elementary school in Connecticut. Gunman dead, at least 20 others shot. Update!

Courtesy of the Chicago Tribune:

Multiple people have been killed in a shooting at an elementary school. The number of dead is unclear, but there are at least 20 shooting victims. Many of the shootings took place in a kindergarten classroom, sources told the Hartford Courant. The gunman is reported dead.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still under way, says the man apparently had two guns.

The shooting was reported at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, in western Connecticut. State police say Newtown police called them at about 9:40 a.m. about the reports.

Like I am sure many of you, I have been watching this story unfold all morning.

I am literally so upset by the information coming out that my hands are shaking as I write this.

The school only has classes from kindergarten through the fourth grads so the oldest child in this school is probably no older than ten years old. As tragic as school shootings are anywhere, THESE are just babies!

There is still information coming in, and I imagine that this story will change and evolve over time.

I am posting this in the hope that as you all learn more we can add it to the comments and hopefully share that information here.

The man brought in two handguns. To me that indicates that this man came to kill as many people as possible.

Whatever the motivation for this shooting, it is clear he intended to kill multiple individuals, possibly even children, and came prepared to do just that!

No more fucking around, we have GOT to have a serious conversation about access to handguns and automatic weapons in this country!

Update: MSNBC is reporting that there are 26 dead, 18 children and 8 adults.

Update 2: Shooter described as twenty years old, dressed all in black, with two handguns. So it was not a parent, and very likely not related directly to the school.

Update 3: New information has revealed that the shooter is 20 year old Adam Lanza, who murdered his mother at home, and then went to this school where his mother worked, to kill others that he found in the building.

The death toll now stands at 26, 27 if you count the shooter. Twenty of them were children and the rest were adults.

There is also another crime scene as well connected to this shooting. Ryan's girlfriend and a friend, remain missing.

Update 4: Believe it or not there is now some confusion about WHICH brother is the now deceased shooter and which one is now in custody.

Update 5: Here is the best update on all of the new information that has some out since I first posted this, including the real name of the shooter, Adam Lanza, and the fact that he killed his mother BEFORE coming to her school and killing her students.  The father is also alive despite reports of his death early in the investigation.

Why, for fuck sake, is your country so hooked on guns? So now children die instead of high school students, shop visitors or a congress woman. And again the whole hypocritical circus starts all over. Tears, eulogies and no change.

People of the US, guns have the tendency 'to reach out and touch' and thus make it a lot easier to kill many people by one person. Unless you're some kind of ninja, a simple knife doesn't have so much lethality.

So, do yourselves a favor. Change the second amendment and create some clarity in what a 'militia' is or wether it's normal to have assault weapons in your bedroom. Better yet, have a discussion about what it means to have the liberty to carry concealed guns in the public place. What kind of paranoia or insecurity must one have to feel the need to do that? Is that the real meaning of 'the free and the brave'? Free enough to threaten death and brave enough to go outside?

If I go out, the chance that I get hit by a car or bicycle is much larger then getting killed by a nut with a gun. Why? Simple, we can't buy guns. Probably because we've realized long ago that giving lethal weapons to ordinary citizens is a snowball on a slippery slope: it keeps on growing without direction, except going down.

The following is my opinion. Guns are not the problem. I am willing to bet if a real investigation took place they find this individual sought help, did the right thing over and over to no avail, I am willing to bet this person came up to road block over road block and got no empathy or sympathy or compassion and that persons' problem not solved. In the end this is the result. Although this person lost grasp on reality and went way over the edge and hurt so many people, and that is awful and awful for all those who lost someone today. I feel the community, the staff, the school officials play just as much a part in all of it. I think this persons community is just as much to blame for the person losing it as the person who pulls the trigger. When someone does this it is a symptom of what is wrong with society. I think gun laws will never solve this type of problem. Compassion comes from the heart not laws.

Not all with mental problems seek help and the system is inadequate to flag all the disturbed. The Oregon mall shooter was the sweetest guy, did he have any warning signs?

May be having an Oozie and multi rounds of ammo isn't a problem but they are not the only guns that violent nut cases get their hands on.

Without a gun, this would have just been one frustrated a-hole. Too bad, so sad. Or he would have had to go through quite a bit more to do damage, and chances of discovery and prevention much higher. Guns and CCP make it too damn easy.

    4. It is too easy for someone with mental health issues to access guns, so yes, guns are very definitely a big part of the problem. I also suspect that the incredibly violent video games that are so prevalent in our society (especially young males) are a contributing factor (the Oregon shooter declaring "I am the shooter").

The following is well worth reading and expresses my sentiments to a "T".

    Real Truth Now

We'll have the discussion again, and the gun crowd will continue to argue that guns were not in any way responsible for the deaths, that those murders could have been achieved just as effectively with butter knives or by poisoning their school lunches. They will also insist that if only each of those school children had been armed with a semi-automatic weapon, the attacker never would have gotten away with it.

Nothing will change. Children will continue to die. And the gun crowd will continue to falsely equate reasonable common sense gun regulation (such as mental health screening) with the government taking away their guns.

There's a reason why the rest of the developed world that has instituted common sense gun regulation similar to what they have with cars, has a ~~collective gun death rate ~~1/20th~~ that of the US.

(just let THAT sink in for a moment)

This isn't about taking away guns, it's about saving lives by insisting on training, accountability, and responsibility with an implement whose only purpose is to kill.

The way the American people think about guns isn't working. The way the US thinks about violence as our primary means of resolving conflict isn't working. Something needs to change. Forcing every member of society to carry a weapon at all times is not the solution, forcing each American to pay the costs of fighting wars based in arrogance isn't working, they are just playing into a deeply flawed thought process and generating even more violence, both domestically and across the globe.

Collective bargaining and other Union rights are being denied. But Police and Firemen are being EXEMPTED because, I don't know, their work is so dangerous?

We need to stop thinking that the job of the teacher is so safe, and so easy that they are lazy, incompetent slobs that all need to be fired.

I could tell you horror stories of teachers raped in their classrooms, assaulted by students or parents and yes, shot.

Teachers and students are easy targets. They are sitting ducks and when it happens you get plenty of publicity (if that's what you want.)

Time to lump the teachers unions in with the police and firemen when it comes to being exempted from the anti-union laws. (Well, time to get rid of the anti-union laws altogether, but you see my point.) AND time to compensate them too. The service to society that teachers provide is every bit as valuable to society as police and firemen, and it looks like the job is becoming just as hazardous when it comes to personal safety.

You can bet that those adults that died did so trying to protect those children. Because that is what teachers do. They put the lives of their students above their own. They are their children, their babies. They own them almost as much as the parents and think of them as their own.

No more concealed carry. No more handguns. No more assault weapons. No more loopholes for guns or licenses or waiting periods or any of that shit.

I am so sick of the NRA defending this all with "the guns were legally obtained." Well, then we NEED TO CHANGE THE LAW.

They also reported that he grew up in Newtown but does not still live there, and in going to homes of relatives, they got to one home and could see a body inside so are proceeding carefully, as was done in Aurora where the apt. was booby-traped. No word on whose home it was or who the body was. No word on his mother at all so far -- or, his father who lives in another town.

Evidently the guns he had are of a variety similar to what SWAT teams carry. I think I heard one report that the magazines hold 60 rounds.

all of what I have reported is preliminary, I believe.

Horrid, horrid, horrid and I am so sick of these guns and magazines being so readily available.

    1. The second amendment needs to be reinterpreted as pertaining to a state's right to a National Guard.

There is no reason private citizens need to own an arsenal. No reason at all. We don't need those most paranoid to own assault rifles.

There is nothing in the Constitution about AMMO. So I say we control the AMMO these guns need. Buy all the guns you want. But restrict the ammo. License. Waiting period. Background checks. And limit it to a very small amount. If it's for target practice, only available at the shooting range and you must use it ALL or it's returned for a refund. Guns inspected to ensure they're empty before you leave. Go through a metal detector just like the airport to make sure you're not smuggling ammo out of the facility.

There's plenty that can be done.

But the first thing we need to do is change this gun happy cowboy attitude that supports the NRA.

Another option besides making the 2nd A as granting the state the right to a militia, is to allow that hte 2d A protects the right of individuals to own guns known to the writers of the Constitution - I think that probably includes muskets & canons. The founders could not possibly have any intent on the role of semi-automatic guns & high speed rifles, and the government already draws lines - people are not allowed to own nuclear weapons, or cluster bombs, etc. Just draw the line where the Founders were thinking.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous2:31 PM

I just read what I wrote and realize it's garbled. I agree with 2:31 - own as many muskets as you must. I'll give in on canon the too - it's pretty cumbersome and not very accurate so not a good choice to do lots of damage - people will see it coming. The rest is post-Constitution and not within the reasonably foreseeable for the founders.

I don't get how the NRA has gotten away with this. they never argue about the right to own nuclear bombs, or cluster bombs, or hand grenades, etc. If the second A means what they say, there is no line to be drawn. If there is a line to be drawn, what is the rational for drawing it after semi-automatic rifles and before hand-grenades. I've never heard it. Can't find it in the Constitution.

How tragic and evil this is.

Here in Montreal last week, we saw the 23rd anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre where 14 were killed....the wound is still fresh for many so we know the tragedy these poor families are feeling today.

Lives and families shattered so that someone has the ability to legally walk around with a gun. I don't know the gun laws in Conn. but matters not.

There is never a good time for this to happen but it seems even sadder at christmas.

May the families make sense out of the senseless.

I saw a tweet by Michael Moore that summed it up pretty well for me.

    Michael Moore @MMFlint
Too soon to speak out about a gun-crazy nation? No, too late. At least THIRTY-ONE school shootings since Columbine.

The shooter apparently shot and killed his father then went to the school and shot and killed those in the office before heading to shoot and kill his mother and then all the children she was teaching. oh and Michigan Republicans are trying to make it legal to carry guns in schools and day-cares.

And I thought today that our idiot ALEC-sponsored Michigan state legislature will use this tragedy to push through the end of no-gun areas in the state of Michigan. Their rationale will, of course, be that if everyone had had a gun, this would not have happened. Ludicrous, obviously, but logic does not work with those who want to arm all of us against one another. The ALEC-sponsored, Koch Brothers, NRA world is not one that I want to live in. It terrifies me that it may be the world of the future that my son and his children have to live in.

The cruel irony is that those douches the Koch Brothers have well-armed private security around them, while the rest of us have to hope not to get caught in the path of some disgruntled person with a gun or some do-gooder with their own gun for a response.

While the gun control non-debate doesn't take place, we need a massive expansion of security perimeters. Airports have TSA, congress has a spiffy service protecting them. A $10,000 fee on each gun sold could pay for a pretty fine school security system. Heck, $100,000 per gun would be appropriate.

it's a good idea to put a tax on guns that would go to protect our schools. One dollar on every gun sold would put a lot of metal detectors in our schools. It's time for that at least!

A law enforcement official says the suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is 24-year-old Ryan Lanza and that his younger brother is being held for questioning as a possible second shooter. The law enforcement official says the boys' mother, Nancy Lanza, works at the school as a teacher.

The official also said Ryan Lanza's girlfriend and another friend are missing in New Jersey.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said the suspect is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak on the record about the developing criminal investigation.

Just to correct this. That was an early report which has been corrected. Ends up that it was the YOUNGER brother that did the killing.

He had is older brother's ID on him. Why? to confuse? as a big FU to his bro?

Adam, age 20, was the killer and was dead at the school. The older bro apparently knew nothing about it all.

"The shooter's brother, 24-year-old Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned, officials told the Associated Press, althought it is not clear why. Earlier, a law enforcement official mistakenly identified Ryan as the shooter, according to the Associated Press."

Obama On Newtown School Shooting: President Tears Up, Expresses 'Overwhelming Grief'

President Barack Obama became emotional as he delivered remarks on the Newtown elementary school shooting Friday.

"I offered Governor Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every resource he needs to investigate," Obama said, noting the country has had "too many of these tragedies in the last few years.

"Each time I learn the news I react not as a president, but as anyone else would -- as a parent. And that was especially true today," Obama said. "I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do."

"They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own," Obama said of the children who were killed, tearing up. "Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping children fulfill their dreams."

I just watched our beloved president hold back tears trying to address this nation...there needs to be another word to say sadness. Just imagining a classroom full of kindergarten children being slaughtered like that is beyond comprehension. My hope is that these parents will organize for some kind of gun control reform after this really sinks in and they are mad, really mad and get into everyones faces. So many parents have dedicated their lives to change policy after this kind of tragedy, a way to heal. Mothers against drunk drivers, John and the most wanted show..it will take the parents, not politicians to change things. I weep for all of them.

While I am in favor of gun control, that wouldn't have prevented this. No way. Kids didn't have a chance even if he was carrying a pocketknife. It is the mentality of the people who feel so comfortable killing people who have never done them a moments harm that is what is so bone-chilling and scary. And now they are after the children?
Yeah, violent video games, child neglect and violent movies seem to be the problem here. Look at the profiles of these guys and you will see this repeated over and over again.
And for the record, I am for gun control, I just don't think it would have prevented this tragedy.

Anon at 1:22 - It would've taken him a very long time to murder 20 children with a pocketknife - I've heard that argument before. If he went charging into a classroom with a pocketknife, I'm quite confident a teacher could have and would have disarmed him quickly.

Not so with 2 rapid fire guns and a rifle. It probably took seconds to murder all of those innocents.

How many times do you hear this happening in other countries that DO have stict gun laws. Never.

Actually there was a knifing incident at a school in China today (?). 22 kids and one adult were stabbed/slashed and injured. NOT KILLED like with a gun.

But it shows, if you are determined, think it through and have a good feel for what goes on inside a classroom/school you can do a lot of damage.

I don't know the answer...just that there are no easy answers.

I agree with you. By next week millions of Americans should have contacted their senators and representatives to find out exactly what they plan to do to 1) enact real gun control laws and 2) support (with dollars) mental health care for young adults, many of whom should be hospitalized and treated for extended periods of time. Mental health is woefully ignored in this crazy society of ours.

This is what I posted on my Facebook page:
Horrible stuff on the news today. Those poor little children. I have no love for guns. They are vehicles of harm, objects that enable sin: Thou Shalt Not Kill (remember that one?). They bring on negative karma in ways even their law abiding owners could never predict. I have a deep set personal horror of them that I wouldn't be surprised came from having a past life as a soldier. I used to be obsessed with the Civil War when I was a kid, so I have wondered on that score. We have the power to bring about a new, more enlightened age. It is within us.

The NRA's efforts to stop all controls on guns will eventually be what takes them down. Most people (my opinion) who own guns have no problem with many of the gun control proposals. They don't want to give up all guns, but I believe most know or should know that some control is needed. The NRA thinks that we should not even prevent people on the no fly list from having guns. Let terrorists have guns - it is their right! They want people to be able to walk into a store and walk out 10 minutes later with whatever gun they want. They don't even like the instant background check which is nearly useless. Those of us who would not have a problem getting finger printed and having an extensive background check before we can purchase a gun will lose our own guns over the ridiculous NRA positions. I don't have a problem with people having guns, but what reasonable people are against outlawing certain kinds or guns or large clips? What reasonable person is against an extensive background check before being approved to have a gun? As with all politics today, it seems like the crazies out on the fringe are driving - and eventually they will crash. Maybe this is the incident that starts to wake them up - I wish I was more confident.

To those who posted it's too late to implement gun control - WTF?? Oh, so we should just hope things get better?

No way. It's NOT too late to stop this insanity with the guns.

Start with the violence being taught in video games, violence in rap music, stop the insanity with the gory movies and stop allowing the NRA to shove it up our asses. Screw them.

No more gun shows selling assault weapons, make it a felony to be carrying a concealed weapon unless you're a cop, soldier or trained security.

People may scoff at my suggestions but we've been bullied long enough by the NRA and effed up idiots like that wretched palin and others like her.

This country does NOT belong to the NRA. These are our babies, our children - their argument that guns don't kill people is so tired, worn out and false.

Guns are designed for one purpose. To kill. To maime and kill rapidly. The 2nd amendment was not meant to be used to win an argument for thugs that believe they have a "god given right" to own weapons of mass destruction.

The teachers and administration in that building saved lives, they're good people who care for their kids and are forming the next generation of citizens, but most of all, they're all heroes!

I wasn't impressed with the White house spokesman when he said "Today is not the day to discuss gun control", he opened the floodgate to politicizing the issue, which had already broken loose on "that channel", and "that bitch" on facebook, etc. etc. etc.

Gryphen's been writing about guns and the need for gun control for how long? We know there's a problem that needs to be addressed. Congress has to be pushed to pass gun reform laws. Who needs an assault weapon for "sport"?

I still can't wrap my brain around the innocent kids and their families, and extended families and friends a week before the holidays. I feel for the survivors and their families, but I'm grateful to President Obama for his ability to console a nation.

Light a candle and hug your kids.
