“I don’t even know where to begin,” Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said on MSNBC. “As a supporter of the Second Amendment and a supporter of the NRA, I just found it very haunting and very disturbing that we are a country talking about arming our teachers and principals in classrooms.”
“How dare they?” fumed Elizabeth Murphy, 42, who lives int the town. “We are all still grieving. This is the wrong time to discuss their goal of putting more guns on the street . . . The bodies haven’t even all been buried yet.”
The speech appalled Rep. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), who represents Newtown in Congress.
He took to Twitter to express his fury. “Walking out of another (Newtown) funeral and was handed the NRA transcript. The most revolting, tone deaf statement I’ve ever seen,” tweeted Murphy, who will be sworn in as the state’s next senator in January.
“They are without conscience and they are cruel,” said Barnett Parker, 68. “They are unable to take ownership. It makes me crazy. It makes me freaking nuts.”
You know as I watched that speech yesterday I actually had a moment where I thought I was being punked, and that the whole thing was an elaborate setup to make liberals look foolish by responding to what HAD to be a joke.
But then I woke up today to see almost ALL of the cable news shows respond in much the same way that I did and realized that it did indeed actually happen.
And rather than be embarrassed by the remarks of their President, the NRA took to Twitter to double down.

I had wondered if this incident would even be a catalyst to REAL reform of our gun laws, but now I am simply wondering how LARGE of an impact it is going to have.
I have to say, if the NRA can only get 53% of Breitbart's readership to support more guns, they've REALLY got trouble with support.

Are they certain that they don't want to use a map with gun sites on it? Maybe they could try "Don't retreat! Reload!" Everyone LOVED it so much last time. Obviously they're not worried about "blood libel".
Wayne LaPierre should be in a holding cell where detailed autopsie reports of each victim and the shooter are read over a loud speaker along with a slide show. Not that it would change him but might make him uncomfortable.

I had a similar thought the other day! I took it a step further and said he should have had to shadow the medical examiner who had to conduct the autopsies. He should see the carnage first hand to understand that reality isn't like an action/adventure movie where the people who get killed onscreen get up and go home when the director yells 'cut!'

I wonder if Mr. LaPierre has any grandchildren and if his rhetoric would remain the same if those grandchildren were among those killed at Sandy Hook ES.

No law will ever eliminate private ownership of guns of any kind. Why not try a very simple solution??????? Stop the damned wars, bring the troops home, retrain them and station them in every school and along all our borders! That way the troops would still be employed and the war money could be spent on SOCIAL SERVICES including mental health screening, getting our economy and workforce back on track and balancing the budget.

You have been Calling Wayne LaPierre the president of the NRA and I think that's an understandable mistake because he is their spokesperson, but he is the Executive Vice President, has been for more than 20 years. Not the president. He is a vile POS, though. No doubt about that.

ReplyDeleteI was outraged by La Pierre's DEMAND that Congress must APPROPRIATE funds to put a cop in every school. These kids are getting killed by high powered weapons we just don't need in the hands of unstable people.
So, if the NRA (and their handlers, the gun industry)wants to see a cop in eery school, then I say, put a tax on all future sales of all weapons, from bb guns to multiple round automatic weapons, plus ammo with the funds to go for the NRA's DEMAND that we have a cop in every school. They can afford a small tax on their products more than the Department of Education can.

Americans shouldn't have to be worried that an irresponsible gun-owning parent's recklessness will result in the slaughter of their young children at school.
Freedom doesn't mean cowering in fear of my gun loving neighbors and their teen boys.
We need real, serious gun control now. FOR REAL.
The first step is to repeal the second amendment. Make it no more of a constitutional right to own a gun than to own a car. We don't need, and can't live with, the constitutional right to own powerful, lethal weapons of mass death. No more.
It's a long process to amend the constitution, requiring passage by Congress and then ratification by 3/4th of the states, so let's start now. Let's demand our Congress be as courageous as a kindergarten teacher and stand up to the NRA . Once we remove this anachronistic, poorly written, flawed right from the constitution, we can hope to stop the regular gun massacres we now must live with as a routine occurrence.
Then, we can follow the lead of countries like UK and Australia and require guns to be stored in extremely secure lockers at gun ranges and hunting clubs and armories. Make licenses to keep guns at home be based on need, with stringent requirements and frequent reviews. Require liability insurance for gun owners, as we require it for car owners.
Repealing the 2nd amendment won't automatically make all gun ownership illegal, but it will allow us to move forward and create the rational rules we need for the 21st century.
That's why I created a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama, which says:
"Repeal the Second Amendment Now. This anachronistic, poorly worded amendment prevents us from passing real gun control measures that will be effective in stopping the ongoing gun slaughter. It should be no more a constitutional right to own a gun than to own a car."
