Congress blocks the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. But remember, there is NO war against women!

Courtesy of HuffPo:

Despite a late-stage intervention by Vice President Joe Biden, House Republican leaders failed to advance the Senate's 2012 reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, an embattled bill that would have extended domestic violence protections to 30 million LGBT individuals, undocumented immigrants and Native American women.

"The House leadership would not bring it up, just like they wouldn't bring up funding for Sandy [hurricane damage] last night," said Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), a key backer of the Senate version of the bill, in an interview with HuffPost. "I think they are still so kowtowing to the extreme on the right that they're not even listening to the moderates, and particularly the women, in their caucus who are saying they support this."

In April, the Senate with bipartisan support passed a version of VAWA that extended protections to three groups of domestic violence victims who had not been covered by the original law, but House Republicans refused to support the legislation with those provisions, saying the measures were politically driven. Instead, they passed their own VAWA bill without the additional protections. In recent weeks, however, even some House Republicans who voted for the pared-down House bill have said they would now support the broader Senate bill -- and predicted it would pass if Republican leaders let it come to the floor for a vote.

"I absolutely would support the Senate bill," Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told HuffPost in late December, speculating that other House Republicans, namely GOP congresswomen, "are very supportive of that."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) had been guiding House negotiations on the matter, huddling with Republican congresswomen last month and even working directly with Biden to try to get a deal. House-Senate talks appeared to have broken down over House Republicans' refusal to accept a key protection for Native American women that was included in the Senate bill.

Oh damn the women, the gays, and the illegal immigrants were ALMOST protected, if only they hadn't wanted to protect Native Americans as well.  I mean seriously just how much compassion can anybody expect a Republican to demonstrate?

After all it's not like we owe the indigenous people of this country for taking their land or anything, right?

Personally I hope the Republicans keep acting like this.  IF they do pretty soon the ONLY demographic that will still vote for them is wealthy white men over the age of fifty.

Well, at least the Senate re-authorized the law. I think it is meant to be a slap in the face at Vice President Biden and at President Obama because both are ardent supporters of the law. As well, of course, as a slap in the face at all women.

Over the past couple of years I've been wondering why Republican men hate women so much. Is it because they hate their mothers? Is it because they think we might be smarter than they? Do they really feel so inadequate? For a while, when the southern state legislatures seemed to be specializing in laws against women I thought it was a southern thing, but Michigan is no different so I think it's just a Republican male thing.

This Republican thing against women has also arisen just as the acceptance of gays and lesbians has grown more widespread in the country. Could there be a relationship? Anyway, I think the Republicans in the House are all simply crazy and I hope they are all put out of their jobs in 2014. They are heading that way, gerrymandering or no gerrymandering. Over 1,300,000 more people voted for Democrats in Congress than for Republicans in 2012.

"After all, it's not like we owe the indigenous people...."

Sorry, Gryphen, I just feel you have lost something here. I don't give a DAMN what "group" a woman belongs to. Lesbian, Immigrant (legal or otherwise), Native. They are all WOMEN and need to have these laws!

I just find it asinine that there is even a QUESTION such as this. ANYBODY who abuses - physically or emotionally - anybody should be prosecuted. Period. It just goes back to the middle eastern religious beliefs about women, I guess. You know, the ones which think women are property?

    Disgusting!

You are right. Women are women. But it is expressly because of the GOP balking at Tribal authority that they held up reauthorizing this bill.

That just makes it even more disgusting! Talk about "politically driven"!

Every time these lawmakers fail to act like compassionate human beings, the spotlights get brighter and brighter to better reveal the GOP's essential meanness.

Maybe, just maybe, the blinded right-wingers will soon be able to see the ugly Golum souls of this currrent GOP House, held to ransom by the entrenched Teabaggers. It will only take a few key ridings to swing voting to progressive candidates to shift the balance to Democrat. But right now, even gun control legislation is controlled by these troll-voters.

I have to believe the arc of history bends toward justice.

House-Senate talks appeared to have broken down over House Republicans' refusal to accept a key protection for Native American women that was included in the Senate bill.

Ironically, word is from Tribal women meeting with Alaska Congressman Don Young's senior aide Chris Flurh and GOP Leader Cantor's office show him to be the biggest detractor of the Tribal provisions. Don Young says he would do anything for American Indians and especially Alaska Natives, but his own staffer has been the biggest obstacle to moving the dialog on in leadership meetings.

This career bureaucrat has always fought against Indigenous rights, policies and funding.

I'm an Alaska resident and have NEVER voted for Don Young in any of his elections. The guy is an ass!

He was married to an Alaskan native for many years and I have always thought that was the only reason he has been elected, because he is a jerk!

I'm going to make sure this information gets in the Alaska news cycle!

A Very Merry Christmas For MSNBC – A Very Unhappy Holiday For Fox News

    The Christmas Wars:
It has suddenly become clear why Fox News has been so fixated on inciting a "War on Christmas." It must be because the Christmas season has been devastatingly cruel to Fox News. This year the Nielsen ratings left a smoldering lump of coal in Fox's stocking despite all the pandering they did to Old St. Nick. Apparently Fox was very naughty. Santa doesn't approve of lying and, perhaps, viewers are getting tired of it as well.

Typical Republicans! Such christians, my ass!

Why any woman or gay person would vote for anyone in the Republican party absolutely amazes me. Hopefully, we'll see many of them GONE in the 2014 election process.

    Pay attention voters!

There should be no doubt in any THINKING person's mind that Republican men, for the MOST part, do not like women. Been raised in a rampant Republican home, I can testify to this degrading and disgusting behavior foisted on females.

What I try to figure out, to this day, is why these Republican men simple ADORE Sarah Palin and she can do no wrong. At the same time, these asses continue to belittle their own wives, daughters, and those women of the Democratic party.

Maybe someone on IM can explain this travesty of 'Ode to Sarah Palin - and the Hell with the Rest of Women' to me. It would life a troublesome burden off my shoulders because I just don't 'get it'. Thank you.

“She Is So Raped Right Now”: Partygoer Jokes About The Steubenville Accuser The Night Of The Alleged Rape

The video is over 12 minutes long. It's not very easy to watch. Nodianos tells jokes about how "dead" the alleged victim is and openly and jokingly acknowledges that she has been raped. Some quotes:

He's puttin' a wang in the butthole, dude.

They peed on her. That's how you know she's dead, because someone pissed on her.

They raped her harder than that cop raped Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction.

They raped her quicker than Mike Tyson raped that one girl.

They raped her more than the Duke lacrosse team.

Her puss is about as dry as the sun right now.

It isn't really rape because you don't know if she wanted to or not.

At one point, a voice belonging to someone off-camera says, "Trent and Ma'lik raped someone." The two boys charged in the rape are Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond. It's unclear how many other Steubenville students are in the room at the time, although at least two of them, who remain off-camera, admonish Nodianos for making light of a rape. "What if that was your daughter?" one of them asks. Nodianos replies simply, "But it isn't."

I was thinking of this while I watched Joe Biden swearing in twenty women, one of whom is openly gay, into the Senate. The GOP fixed the problem by giving a woman a clerical title at the last minute. See? Problem solved...

The GOP will go the way of the dinosaur. They dispise people with disabilitis- look how they treated Bob Dole?
