Prosecutor recommends a 35 year sentence for domestic Alaskan terrorist Schaeffer Cox.

Courtesy of ADN:

Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to put Fairbanks militia leader Schaeffer Cox behind bars until he's in his mid-60s, and to sentence two militia members, Lonnie and Karen Vernon, to what is effectively life imprisonment.

In June, an Anchorage jury convicted Cox, the 28-year-old founder of the Alaska Peacemaker Militia, and 57-year-old militia soldier Lonnie Vernon of plotting to kill law enforcement officials and conspiring to obtain gun silencers and grenades with which to carry out attacks. In a separate case, Lonnie and his 66-year-old wife, Karen, pleaded guilty in August, admitting they had planned to kill a federal judge and an Internal Revenue Service Officer while the couple was embroiled in a legal dispute over property taxes.

Prosecutors are recommending sentences of 26 1/2 years for Lonnie Vernon for both convictions and 15 1/2 years for Karen Vernon. Lonnie Vernon is asking for a sentence of 21 years, 10 months. Karen Vernon is asking for five years. The couple's sentencing hearing is set for Monday.

According to a sentencing memorandum filed in court this week, prosecutors recommend that Cox spend 35 years in prison. A judge is scheduled to sentence Cox at a hearing Tuesday. Cox's Seattle-based attorney, Peter Camiel, says he will ask the judge for a sentence of 10 years.

Camiel and Cox's attorney at trial, Nelson Traverso, have said the militia members merely made plans to react with violence in the event of a collapse of the federal government and that no attacks were imminent. Prosecutors say the militia, at Cox's direction, took clear steps toward committing murder, including compiling a "hit list," conducting surveillance on possible targets and amassing a huge cache of weapons, some of them illegal to own.

Well it should come as no surprise to anybody that I think they should throw the book at Cox.  As well as the Vernons.

In doing so I think it would send a clear message to all of those camouflage wearing, automatic weapon hoarding, militia assholes, that if THEY decide to start threatening Federal officials, or amassing a huge arsenal with the mindset that it will someday be used against our military, that they TOO may soon find themselves spending decades behind bars living in abject fear of accidentally dropping a bar of soap in the shower.

Oh and by the way, to any militia douchebags who might be reading this, Barack Obama is STILL our President.

The very first question that enters my mind: if Cox serves the full 35 years he would be 63 when he gets out. Who is he going to turn to for support at that age?

He won't have any earnings record for SS so essentially the taxpayer will be left to support him.

Is that a reason not to send him to prison?

You might also advise those people in camouflage cloths that the military has much more powerful weapons and missiles than they could only dream of. Besides, its well over due for them to grow up and stop playing "war" like many kids do when they're 10 to 12 years old. Something also tells me their delusional and may need a psychologist more than just jail time.

AIP is not treasonous, nor does it have anything to do with this post or situation. AIP and other organizations from other states, have actual purposes that would help their state since federal regulations sometimes inhibit progress.

Stick to the post topic please, and try not to slander anyone by falsely calling people treasonous. There's as much evidence that some of your precious democrats are treasonous as those you irrationally hate. It's all subjective and rarely based in fact.

Time to get lives and grow up. Stop acting like petulant asses who are allergic to objectivity.

Stick to the blog post and pick up a dictionary.

Why are readers here incapable of seeing things in objective manners?

Why is it so hard to separate things that aren't related?

    7. A party that has a main goal of ceding from the country to which it belongs does not serve any good purposes whatsoever. The members generate false hatred and result in exactly what has happened here - people getting way too enthusiastic in supporting a reality that does not exist - to the extent of thinking the death of government employees is a good way to solve their problems.

Here's their website, everyone should read it, although I find it amusing that the link to their "Goals" is empty, guess they haven't figured out what their "goal" is or they are too chicken to post their actual intent, which is succession from the United States. Anyway, read it and ponder and then we can all argue intelligently:

Here's also a good link regarding how Alaska became a State. The statehood question was voted on in 1946 and passed by a 3:2 margin.

From the ADN comments, one of the Michigan Militia in exile says:

My, my... The central government must have some inside information about how long it plans on surviving...

Hang on Schaeffer, old friend... The Bastille cannot last forever...

35-years is very optimistic. Once WE THE PEOPLE have the keys, your cell will be the first I will be PROUD to unlock..

There are crazies everywhere. Here in Michigan we have not heard much from the Michigan militia in recent years and have thought that they all moved to Alaska. Ever since the Oklahoma City bombing in fact . . . .

I'm keeping my champagne bottle corked until the judge makes his decision. I've been jaded by the legal system's lenient judges following sentencing guidelines and "Showing Mercy" in the hopes of "Rehabilitation".

OT Rachel had a segment on Shell's drilling rig in Alaska, they're in full damage control mode, no fly zone, no ship zone, keeping the media from accessing information.. it's sickening.

"If the federal government wants to get you, your basement arsenal will not be much protection.

We spend about as much on our military as the rest of the world put together. If you get to thinking another American Revolution is in order, it's a guarantee you'll be outgunned.

This would appear obvious. It's apparently not. The nation's debate on guns is forced to accommodate people who believe they are poised to stand up to an Obama-led reign of tyranny, egged on by interest groups claiming to stand for freedom but who are mostly interested in selling more guns."
