Former Navy Seal, and man who taught Todd Palin to hold a gun on TV, shot to death at shooting range. Really?

Courtesy of Politico:

Former Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle was fatally shot along with another man Saturday on a Texas gun range, a sheriff told local newspapers.

Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant said Kyle, 38, and a second man were found dead at Rough Creek Lodge’s shooting range west of Glen Rose, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Stephenville Empire-Tribune. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Witnesses told sheriff’s investigators that a gunman opened fire on the men around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then fled in a pickup truck belonging to one of the victims, according to the Star-Telegram. The newspapers said a 25-year-old man was later taken into custody in Lancaster, southeast of Dallas, and that charges were expected.

Lancaster police did not immediately return calls for comment.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Wow shot to death on a gun range, after authoring a book entitled "American Sniper," and appearing on a television show that glorified war and military weaponry, I don't think there is enough irony to even cover that.

Which is too bad because that means there is not enough left over for the fact that Chris Kyle was also the man assigned to Todd Palin during the truly excruciating "Star Earn Striped" reality show and tasked with the job of teaching him to hold a gun like a man. (Sadly, as evidenced by the picture below, that did not take.)

Kyle is also the man who made the following claim about the First Dud:

“He’s Rambo, he’s straight up Rambo,” said Chris Kyle. “Next time I’m in a war, I want Todd Palin on my side.”

Then, Chris added, “He was the first one on the boat, the first one under the wire, and about the time the rest of the guys were getting through, he already had the crate. You don’t need anyone else,” he said. “Forget Chuck Norris, send in Todd Palin.”

Gee if only Kyle would have had Todd with him at that shooting range. Just imagine.

Of course Sarah Palin's ghostwriter has already offered up her condolences:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and many friends of former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle tonight. Todd and I first met Chris in Pella, Iowa, when he helped out with security for the premiere of the film “The Undefeated.” And later we became friends with Chris when he was on “Stars Earn Stripes” with Todd. Chris was a wonderful man, a good friend, and a true American hero who loved our country and served honorably. He was loved and admired by so many, and he will never be forgotten.

 - Todd and Sarah Palin

God, you can just feel the compassion and sense of loss can't you?

Okay you know this is usually where I would go off on riff about the "Palin curse" and point out how incredibly ironic it was that this man, who had grifted money from the gun nuts by writing a self aggrandizing book entitled "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History," was killed on a shooting range in bum fuck Texas, but I won't.

And the reason for that is because it is never okay to mock a person's death, and however much this guy may have contributed to the glorification of war and the mythologizing of Todd Palin, he was still a human being. And he lost his life. And that is always a sad day for everyone.

Sarah can't write a few sentences about someone else without turning it into an infomercial about her and Todd's "careers" and Q rating. She'll never get it. I'm pretty sure a friggin note of condolence should be written to the family of the deceased, not your fucking fan base, Sarah, in which case, don't you think the gentleman's family knows exactly who he is? You are a fucking fool, lady, the least self-aware and most self-centered person I've even seen operate in the public arena. Get a fucking etiquette and read it several times until you learn some manners. Then at least you'll be able to pretend you're a decent person.

Like its YOUR place to send out a press release since the man was fortunate enough to meet the famous Queen Quitter in person.

What a miserable, disgusting person Sarah Palin proves herself to be, once again, by her self-promotion when the focus should be on others who lost their loved one. Just like Tucson, it's gotta be all about Sarah. Sick woman!

Hint: Next time, send a fucking private note, Sarah, instead of grandstanding. It's such bad form...

"Ventura released a statement on his Facebook page calling Kyle’s claims completely false, denying he said anything derogatory about the troops, and also denying Kyle’s claim of punching him in the face or even having met Chris Kyle.[13] Kyle said that two Navy SEALs had come forward with the story but no police report has ever existed.[14] At the time of Kyle's death, Ventura was suing Kyle for defamation in court, and the lawsuit was still pending."

Seriously, if a former Navy SEAL at a gun range, with a gun nearby can be killed by a random dude at a gun range, when, presumably, there were tons of "good guys" around with guns and the shooter could get away, clean, THEN THE ARGUMENT ABOUT NEEDING A GUN FOR SELF-DEFENSE IS BASELESS. It ain't working, kiddos.

Does this mean when someone decides to shoot you they don't give you time to get or aim your gun? The argument that people threatened would shoot disabling or killing the agressor does not hold up. Not for teachers writing on blackboards or movie patrons watching the screen chewing popcorn. Maybe if there was a crowd of people one person might shoot a surprise attacler after many are killed or maimed.

This unexpected death is another tragedy.

One idea I heard last night. From now on, every time somebody is killed by gunfire, clip the article, or print it from the internet, and mail it to Wayne LaPierce of the NRA. If there's a picture of the victim, so much the better. If it's sent via the mail, somebody has to handle it, and perhaps Wayne can start seeing that his words and actions (or lack thereof) have consequences to real people. email can too easily be deleted.

Chris Kyle clearly was not too bright. He was brain washed by the military complex and he came out on the wrong end. Justice Catches Up With Author of "American Sniper"

... In a 2012 interview with Time magazine he was asked what went through his mind when he aimed at a target. His own answer revealed his bleating lack of humanity, robbed from his as certain as he had taken it from his hundred plus victims.

"The first time, you're not even sure you can do it," he said. "But I'm not over there looking at these people as people. I'm not wondering if he has a family. I'm just trying to keep my guys safe to rob and kill from other innocent people. Every time I kill someone, he can't plant an IED. You don't think twice about it. Even if it's a kid, or he wasn't trying to plant an IED...because either way, he can't plant that IED."

Yes, G., it isn't good to feel happy about another person's tragedy, or to gloat.

However, I understand your point. This glorification of war and warrior-like is unfortunate. "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword" has never been truer. And this is not about those who join the military for many reasons and have to fight. This is about those who have this attitude that the ugliness of war is something to be admired and they decide to exploit it, benefit by it, for money, entertainment.

The hard cold facts are that a few these men, who haven't really thought the thing out, were good soldiers, willing to risk their lives for their country, but then they return with a bent on reliving their glory days and market what they know.

Wayne LaPierre Gets so Crazy that Even Fox News Calls Out His BS

...LaPierre was in full blown crazy mode. When Chris Wallace brought up Supreme Court Justice Scalia’s opinion in the Heller decision that the Second Amendment is not unlimited, LaPierre said, “We have all kinds of reasonable laws right here, the NRA supports, that they enforce them in Chicago and cut crime. But for the most right is to protect yourself, and the American public wants to be able. Semi-automatic technology has been around for a hundred years. If you limit the American public’s access to semi-automatic technology, you limit their ability to survive. If someone’s invading your house, I mean you shouldn’t say you only have fix or six shots. You ought to have what you need to protect yourself, not what some politician thinks is reasonable.”

Chris Wallace played a clip of the NRA ad that uses the president’s kids, and LaPierre’s reply spoke volumes about how far over the cliff the NRA has gone

    Can we say PARANOID???

LaPierre: They’re Coming For Our Guns No Matter What They Say

National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre said on Sunday that despite what pro-gun control politicians say or have written in draft legislation, the push for universal background checks is really a veiled step toward the government tracking law-abiding American citizens, most likely for nefarious purposes.

“I think what they’ll do is turn this universal check on the law-abiding into a universal registry of law-abiding people. And law-abiding people don’t want that. My God, that’s the last thing they want,” LaPierre said on “Fox News Sunday.”

After host Chris Wallace pointed out that post-Newtown firearms proposals from President Obama and other Democrats don’t call for a national registry or a confiscation of weapons already in private hands, LaPierre said he wasn’t buying it.

“Obamacare wasn’t a tax until they wanted it to be a tax. I don’t think you can trust these — I mean my gosh, [Sen.] Dianne Feinstein [D-CA] said, ‘If we could go door to door and pick ‘em up, I’d do it,’” he said.

The two sides of the universal background check debate were laid out fairly cleanly on “Fox News Sunday,” with Mark Kelly, husband of former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), advocating for it. Though an assault weapons ban was discussed — and largely dismissed as a legislative possibility — the focus was on universal background checks, the top goal of the gun control community after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn.

LaPierre argued that background checks were ineffective, possibly part of a government plot against gun owners, and not a real legislative option because of a powerful “mental health lobby.” He noted that the NRA used to support universal checks but said special interests surrounding mental health and privacy had derailed the effort and led to NRA leaders throwing in the towel.

...Kelly, meanwhile, in a separate interview, called on the government to prosecute more people who try to buy guns at licensed dealers but are denied after a background check. Then he called for legislation aimed at making it harder for someone who can’t buy a gun at a licensed dealer to buy it somewhere else.

“Since 1999, 1.7 million people were prevented from getting a firearm because they had a criminal record or a history of mental illness. We stopped those people from getting a gun,” Kelly said. “Now we’ve got to make sure they don’t have a second option to get the gun and that’s getting a gun from a private seller or the gun show loophole without having a background check. We need to close that loophole.”

In a startling collusion between dark-money powerhouses, NRA's efforts were actually funded by a $600,000 grant from Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS

    The NRA vs. America

How the country’s biggest gun-rights group thwarts regulation and helps put military-grade weapons in the hands of killers

...Today's NRA stands astride some of the ugliest currents of our politics, combining the "astroturf" activism of the Tea Party, the unlimited and undisclosed "dark money" of groups like Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS, and the sham legislating conducted on behalf of the industry through groups like the American Legislative Exchange Council. "This is not your father's NRA," says Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the Violence Policy Center, a top gun-industry watchdog. Feldman is more succinct, calling his former employer a "cynical, mercenary political cult."

The NRA's alignment with an $11.7 billion industry has fed tens of millions of dollars into the association's coffers, helping it string together victories that would have seemed fantastic just 15 years ago. The NRA has hogtied federal regulators, censored government data about gun crime and blocked renewal of the ban on assault weaponry and high-capacity magazines, which expired in 2004. The NRA secured its "number-one legislative priority" in 2005, a law blocking liability lawsuits that once threatened to bankrupt gunmakers and expose the industry's darkest business practices. Across the country, the NRA has opened new markets for firearms dealers by pushing for state laws granting citizens the right to carry hidden weapons in public and to allow those who kill in the name of self-defense to get off scot-free.

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman on Sunday asserted that the National Rifle Association (NRA) had been “revealed as an insane organization” that “has this vision that we’re living in a Mad Max movie” because it wants to put more guns in schools instead of supporting universal background checks and limits on military-style weapons.

“We’ve gotten a glimpse into the mindset of the pro-gun people,” Krugman observed. “And we’ve seen certainly with [NRA CEO] Wayne LaPierre and some of these others, it’s bizarre, they have this vision that we’re living in a Mad Max movie and that nothing can be done about it, that America cannot manage unless everybody’s prepared to shoot intruders, that the idea that we have a police force that provides public safety is somehow totally impractical, despite the fact that that is in fact the way we live.”

“Now the craziness of the pro-gun lobby has been revealed,” he added. “And that has got to move the debate and got to move legislation, at least to some degree.”

In Just One Month, The NRA Has Torpedoed Its Reputation

In separate polls conducted by Public Policy Polling and the Washington Post/ABC News, the association's favorability ratings sit underwater with the majority of Americans.

The PPP poll shows a big shift from before CEO Wayne LaPierre's press conference, which cast blame on the media, and violent video games and movies for the elementary-school massacre in Newtown, Conn., last month. Before the press conference, 48 percent of Americans viewed the organization in a positive light, compared with 41 percent who viewed it unfavorably.

After the press conference and a subsequent appearance on "Meet the Press," the NRA's favorability shifted to a 42-45 negative split — a 10-point swing in three weeks.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post and ABC found that the NRA's favorability rating is underwater for the first time ever in their limited polling of the question. According to the poll, only 36 percent said they have a favorable opinion of the NRA, compared with 44 percent who view it in a negative light.

Chad Littlefield and his family are victims. too. As are the family of Eddie Ray Routh. They all deserve the truth. How was it Routh showed no warning signs, mental health symptons? He was allowed guns and to shoot at the range?

GLEN ROSE, Texas — A 25-year-old man was charged with murder in connection with a shooting at a central Texas gun range that killed former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and his friend, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Sunday.

Police found the bodies of Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, at the shooting range about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

"What I know is Chris and a gentleman – great guy, I knew him well, Chad Littlefield – took a veteran out shooting who was struggling with PTSD to try to assist him, try to help him, try to, you know, give him a helping hand and he turned the gun on both of them, killing them," Cox said.

Chris Kyle knew the man had PTSD, and wanted to play Therapist without having a license. He thought shooting guns was good medicine, and ended up getting himself and his neighbor killed. Kyle's foundation needs to be examined, because if he is "treating" others with PTSD and does not have licensed therapists employed and overseeing the services then he is doing them all a disservice. I thought the goal was to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, not to encourage them to get back into the saddle of shooting guns.

It is always good for PR to say you help
Vets. It is also a huge charity scam to do for Vets and take the money for yourself. ABSOLUTELY Chis Kyle "foundations" or "therapy" or whatever it is, MUST BE INVESTIGATED. There are other things like this going on. Those Vets are victimized by people and other Vets that are helping themselves by pretending to help the sick Vets.

It takes a great ego to write a book about yourself as Kyle did. He clearly lied about Todd, so he is another brainwashed puppet.

What the hey was he doing acting as a helper of someone suffering from PTSD?

Was he helping or doing something to make himself look and feel good?

Anonymous3:33 PM True about knowing better.

That doesn't mean other times soldiers don't go wacko and do violent deadly things to one another. No one knows what it was all about yet. Just some gabbing about first impressions. Kyle has a publicity machine behind him. The public only knew his script, not what all went on in his personal life. The shooter and the dead may have met as two guys from the same hell hole but no one else knows how it actually went down. The guy in jail doesn't have a publicist and fan base.

Sarah's Facebook only addresses the death of one man, the man they knew. She doesn't give a shit about the incident, only mentions prayers to Kyle's many friends. Not a word about the man she and Todd did not meet, Chad Littlefield. The Palin brand is weird and inappropriate beyond words. The world only revolves around the Palins, if you didn't lie about Todd being a great warrior, you and your family don't deserve a mention.

So much for the "only a good guy with a gun can stop a bad guy with a gun" theory, La Pierre.

This is EXACTLY the same thinking as Nancy Lanza had that cost her and 26 others their lives. Since when does going to a firing range improve one's self-esteem? It does NOT compute in rational thinking.

I'm thinking they were trying to treat the PTSD with exposure to gun fire in a safe environment. This is what happens when amateurs try to fix what doctors have spent their entire lives treating. See this link for the VA method of treating PTSD. http://www.ptsd.va.gov/public/pages/treatment-ptsd.asp

Unfortunately, they shutter too much about Jeremy Morlock and how the military treated his problems. Didn't he request from friend of family Palin for help? The experience I've seen with PTSD is they give them all the drugs in the world, use them like guinea pigs.

It would be good to know what therapy course Kyle was following. Any medications and what procedures they were doing should come out in the future. Either that or there will be more cover up. The media will follow the propaganda of praising those they want to make into "heroes".

Two men were murdered, families are hurting. Why would Sarah Palin vaguely mention 'family and friend' and only name a mourning for one? Do you have to know a person to mention mourning their loss? Is that a military thing... to only mention the most famous or only a person that you met? What is wrong with CNN and anyone that is repeating this shallow story line?

Will we ever learn what actually went down at the Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose? Why did it take so long to call the police with two dead bodies? There is a near 2 hour gap and who is the "someone else"? What does that mean?

    http://news.yahoo.com/man-charged-fatal-shooting-ex-seal-author-150201265.html

Sheriff Tommy Bryant said the trio went to the shooting range around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Someone else came across the bodies of Kyle and Littlefield around 5 p.m. and called 911.

The U.S. military confirmed Sunday that Routh was a corporal in the Marines from June 2006 to January 2010. He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Haiti in 2010. His current duty status is listed as reserve.

( You can be suffering from PTSD and be current in the reserve. That explains Track Palin. Isn't Track Palin in the reserve? )

All he is is a cold blooded killer. Nothing to celebrate here. COLD. BLOODED. KILLER.

During his 10-year stint as a Navy SEAL sniper, Chris Kyle was in every major battle of the Iraq war and was so effective at killing Iraqis that they called him "The Devil Of Ramadi" while placing an $80,000 bounty on his head.

At 225 confirmed kills, his fellow SEAL Team 3 members called him "The Legend" and picked the comic book character The Punisher as their platoon's mascot.

His first kill was a woman about to throw a hand-grenade at a group of Marines. His most distant kill was from 2,100 yards away outside Sadr City in 2008.

Washington Post is running a series on guns in America. Today's installment is priceless, about filthy rich Rhode Island blogger turned gun owner who packs a Glock when he goes to the Starbucks in his tony, well-heeled neighborhood. It's on his hip even when he's chillin' at home with his nine-year-old daughter. It's worth a read for a little insight into what I consider to be the paranoid, mentally ill mind of many gun owners.

Why can't they ever know if Routh was on medication? Sheriff Tommy Bryant didn't know if Routh was on any medication. "I don't know that we'll ever know. He's the only one that knows that," Upshaw said.

Did they not test Routh when he was arrested/ They could test his hair. There would be no medical records?

If this Kyle is such a great guy his pals will want to know every little thing about his killer. The media can't find his friends or family? Landlord, neighbors? Anyone that observed him before this tragedy?

...Cause, wouldn't the good guy here have been the 4 time tour-of-duty Iraq war veteran? And the bad guy the one that killed him and the other guy?
