Alaska Senator Mark Begich comes out in favor of marriage equality. Well, duh! Update!

Courtesy of Buzzfeed:

After remaining mum on the subject when asked about it last week, Sen. Mark Begich's office issued a statement Monday night from the senator supporting marriage equality.

"I believe that same sex couples should be able to marry and should have the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as any other married couple," the Alaskan senator said in what appears to be his first direct statement on the subject.

"Government should keep out of individuals' personal lives—if someone wants to marry someone they love, they should be able to. Alaskans are fed up with government intrusion into our private lives, our daily business, and in the way we manage our resources and economy," he continued.

To be honest I am only reporting on this because it is MY Senator who made this statement.

My assumption is that now with both President Obama and Hillary Clinton having voiced their support for marriage equality that it is only a matter of time until ALL Democrats jump on board.

Now in my opinion the REAL news will be when our other Senator, Lisa Murkowski, decides to come out in favor of gay marriage. Especially since she has voted in support of the 2006 amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Of course as we know 2006 was light years away politically and today this country is in a much different place. So the question is how long can she, and other Republicans, hold out?

Update: Here is rather a interesting timeline which demonstrates who came out in favor of marriage equality, and when.

  1. For the Democrats it's a no-brainer. The answer is "Of course". For the Republicans, well, it all depends on when they get their "no-brainers" to start functioning rationally.

He's come out in favor of same sex marriage now that polls show an overwhelming majority of the population believes it should be legal, how brave of him. Profile in courage.

I love seeing the timeline, the ones who spoke out earliest deserve the lion's share of praise because they're the bravest.
I never thought that I'd see such a quick shift in the polls favoring marriage equality.

But Begich was one of four Democratic senators who did NOT vote for the budget last week, and he does NOT support limits on any type of guns and weapons, and he DOES support the opening of ANWR, so he's simply not this Alaskan's Democrat.
