Christian school fires pregnant teacher for having premarital sex, and then tries to offer her job to the guy that impregnated her. Wait, what?

Courtesy of Life Inc:

In October, Teri James says her supervisor at San Diego Christian College called her to her office and got straight to the point: Was James pregnant?

James, 29, of El Cajon, Calif., was indeed pregnant – and she was also unmarried, a violation of school rules, according to the lawsuit she filed in San Diego County superior court. She says she was fired because, as the termination letter included in the suit stated: “Teri engaged in activity outside the scope of the Handbook and Community Covenant that does not build up the college’s mission.”

Speaking by phone with her lawyer, Gloria Allred, James said she felt humiliated.

"I had to leave right after the meeting. I had to go into the office with all of my co-workers and say I'm leaving," James said. "I never came back so I don't know what my co-workers thought, but for me, it was humiliating. I felt like I was in trouble."

Also insulting, James said, was that after firing her, the school offered a job to her then-fiancé – they are now married – even though it was known that he, too, engaged in premarital sex. He did not accept the job, she said.

San Diego Christian College asks that its employees sign its “community covenant,” a two-page contract that asks its community, which includes employees and about 500 students on-site, to abstain from drugs, alcohol and tobacco and “abusive anger, malice, jealousy, lust, sexually immoral behavior including premarital sex, adultery, pornography and homosexuality, evil desires and prejudice based on race, sex or socioeconomic status.”

"We all had to sign it," James said. "I needed a job in this economy and so I never thought that anything would happen -- I just needed a job."

Added Allred: "It does not say that you will be fired if you do not comply."

You know this is another instance where I almost feel like a visitor from another world trying to understand how human beings can make such important decisions, such as who to fire and who to hire, based on superstitious nonsense.

To most of us the idea that this woman would be fired from her job due to engaging in a loving activity with her fiancee which resulted in a new life, is indefensible. Especially since I have little doubt that this school also frowns upon the use of birth control as well.

But then to add insult to injury is the idea that after the woman is punished for engaging in "sexually immoral behavior,"  her partner in that "immoral behavior" is essentially rewarded with an offer to take her job!

Which almost make you wonder if these idiots know how procreation works.

But of course they do. The problem is that they are members of a religion that has laid the blame for ALL of man's ills at the feet of the woman for thousands of years.

According to the Bible, Eve's eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden resulted in every possible sin that we know today. Therefore when one is committed who carries the lioness's share of the blame?

Before Eve, man was perfect. But you know once you introduce a woman into the equation then the evil has fertile ground in which to take root. And, once again according to the book that the History channel now uses as a textbook, God was so infuriated with the fact that Eve had corrupted his perfect masterpiece (Man), that he decided that man would be punished from that day forward, and women even more so with the discomfort of her monthly menstrual cycle and the pain of childbirth. (The so-called Curse of Eve)

But remember, HE loves you.

You might well say, "Come on Gryphen those old fables don't have any REAL impact on how women are viewed or treated today." But if you think that then you are not paying attention to the message of this story. Or the world around you.

Two people have premarital sex. One is summarily fired. The other offered a new job.

The only difference? Their gender. And the perceptions about their gender, gleaned from the reading of the Bible. Or the Koran. Or the Torah.

One was perfect and Godly, one was devious and soon became the instrument of Satan to usher in the downfall of man.

The school is only following the direction provided them by the book that they feel guides their lives to a greater glory in the eyes of their Lord.  To deviate from that path is to risk eternal damnation, courtesy, don't forget, of that bitch Eve.

My question, once again, is why are women still drawn to the church? Essentially all of the Abrahamic religions vilify, shame and repress the women. Why do we think that the Catholic church refuses to ordain women? Why do many Muslim cultures insist that women hide themselves behind Burkas? Why do we in America, even today, pay women less than we do men for the same job?

All of that, whether we are aware of it or not, is the lasting result of patriarchal faiths that identify man as the head of the household, the church, and the workplace, while placing women in the role of their subordinate due to the scribblings of an ancient civilization thousands of years ago.

And this case in San Diego is just the most recent example to remind us of how far we yet have to go to rid ourselves of the shackles of superstition and primitive constraints.

I hope Gloria Allred rakes their ignorant asses across the coals. Maybe next she can represent Eve, because THAT woman has a huge defamation of character lawsuit just itching to see the inside of a courtroom.

Oh, Gryphen, it's so simple....women who defile themselves with sex (including married women) are Slutty McSlut-Sluts who must be publicly shamed and punished by their actions. Men who engage in sex are Hunky Hunka-Hunks who are so manly their manliness caused the Slutty McSlut-Sluts to tempt them and lead them astray.

Even in public school districts, a teacher can be fired for violating the "norms" of the community. But I could see her having a legitimate claim since they offered the position to her accomplice.

    2. You consider no pre marital sex as a society "norm"? Or do you consider men having pre marital sex is normal, while women doing the same is not? If the later - the mind boggles as to how a heterosexual society can survive.

    3. I think our society's puritanical views on sex are ridiculous. My point was that how a public district defines "norms" is relative and can be arbitrary--they can fire you for about anything. If she signed a contract for the private school, she can be held to that--but their offering to hire her boyfriend, in my opinion, gives her cause to sue. I don't think they've done anything wrong, I said "accomplice" in reference to the school defining their actions as sinful.

Great analysis. Anyone who still doesn't believe thus has only to review the thousands of recent GOP laws degrading and demonizing a woman who has sex, while never once introducing a law making a man culpable for anything, including incest and rape.

I'm always heartened that you, as a man, can be so eloquent about how women are thought of.
One wonders if all these "Christian" men really like women, much less love them? It seems like a constant effort to dominate and control, like primitives. Nothing at all like what their religion teaches.
My low-church Episcopalian upbringing stressed that it was by good works that others would see the value and benefit of Christianity: humility, charity, compassion.

If the contract states that all employees are to abstain from "prejudice based on race, sex or socioeconomic status,” then if appears the supervisor must be fired. Clearly by offering the job to James' fiancé, the supervisor discriminated based on sex. Hypocrites!

I know of a case where a nun was raped. Being a good Catholic, she wouldn't dream of having an abortion. She carried the child, and in reward for being faithful (that's sarcasm) she was fired from the Catholic School where she taught because she was an unmarried, pregnant woman. Her pregnancy showed, and it would upsetting to the students. She was fired.

This story has repeated itself several times, with several nuns. They minister to the poor in the poorest neighborhoods, and in the local county jail, making them targets of rape. In one case, we know the lawyer who represented one such nun when she sued the school for her salary, claiming that they fired her for obeying the rules of the Catholic Church. She won her case. And, yes, you wonder why she would choose to stay in that kind of hateful community.

When the married Chuck Jr.impregnated a younger worked at the grade school (private or public?) did she show she was pregnant or did she carry the baby like Sarah with Trig? How did the school handle an unmarried pregnant teacher or did they all work together to conceal the pregnancy?

It is hard to believe that the people in their school district and other parts of Alaska don't care about unmarried pregnant teachers being viewed by students. Is it the parents who do not care about what their children are exposed to, is it the school that helps to cover up illicit sex affairs? What is the deal in Alaska?

I went through the dilemma of breaking a vow/contract when I was divorced. It took me a long time to realize the reality was not that I broke a contract - but that there was any valid reason for anyone to force such a contract in the first place.

The mistake is not with the lass - it is with the contact and those who created it.

Regarding her "baby daddy" who was equally as guilty of "immoral behavior" as far as their church doctrine goes, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that any sort of christian religious organization is patriarchal in nature and men are allowed much more leeway in their "moral choices" than are women. If this gal is in anyway surprised by this then she hasn't been paying attention to the way her religion works.

    Speaking of Biblical insanity:

Christian Pastor: Women Should Have No Say in How Our Country is Run

Pastor Steven Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Arizona is back with another one of his offensive, misogynistic sermons! (His sermon about how his wife cooks for him was incredibly popular, but this one is bound to be on the Greatest Hits album.)

The subject: How good it is to be old-fashioned.

more, but this is just one passage:

29:55: “Today we have women’s rights! We’ve come a long way, baby! And today, you know, [in a mocking voice] ‘Oh those horrible, horrible days when women had no rights’… Let’s bring them back! Let’s get back to those days! [Fake scream] What are you so worried about? What do you think they mean when they say ‘women’s rights’? You know what they mean? The right to divorce your husband is what they mean. You know what they mean? The right to rebel and disobey your husband. The right to divorce him. The right to go out and get a job and make your own money. The right to tell him what to do. The right to go vote for our leaders as if women should have any say in how our country is run, when the Bible says that ‘I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence’? I AM QUOTING THE BIBLE RIGHT NOW! But it’s old-fashioned.”

University of North Carolina Threatens to Expel Rape Victim for Seeking Justice

Misogyny strikes again. North Carolina is a place where victims of rape are supposed to lie back, enjoy it and whatever you do don’t report it or talk about it.

Reporting rape at the University of North Carolina (UNC) is “discouraged” especially if it happens “too often.”

Melinda Manning, who is the former Assistant Dean of Students at UNC, filed a complaint alleging the University Counsel’s office complained that the number of sexual assault cases she compiled for 2010 was “too high.”

Three students and 1 former student joined in the complaint which reveals the sort of conduct that the GOP thrives on.

According to the Daily Tar Heel, Manning was made a victim of a hostile work environment in the dean of students office and higher administrators were less than receptive toward her effort to change the way the University handles sexual assault cases. In particular, the complaint points to Dean of Students Jonathan Sauls, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp and the Office of University Counsel.

The complaint outlines several indicators that UNC’s priorities entailed protecting rapists and keeping women in their place.

Issues raised in the complaint include:

The University Counsel’s office claimed Manning’s reports of sexual assault cases were “too high” before three cases were dropped without her knowledge.

When Sauls was hired in 2006, ”all language requiring sexual assault training for judicial boards disappeared.”

  18. What were they thinking when they offered the fiance the job? One possibility:

Maybe they thought they were helping the woman because at least the fiance would have a job. Besides, he wasn't an employee of the school when he'd had sex and hadn't signed the pledge. So no problem.

Amazon faced criticism Friday after customers pointed out offensive T-shirts, with slogans that promote domestic abuse, and the retailer allowed the clothing company to continue to sell the products for several hours.

The problem began when site users alerted Amazon.co.uk that one of its merchants, U.S.-based clothing seller Solid Gold Bomb, was offering T-shirts with the slogan "Keep Calm and Rape a Lot," according to the BBC.

Solid Gold Bomb apologized for the shirts, but Amazon continued to allow Solid Gold Bomb to sell other shirts with variations on the same theme. Some of these shirts had phrases like "keep calm and knife her" and "keep calm and grope a lot," according to the BBC. The shirts are a play on England's famous World War II "Keep Calm and Carry On" slogan.

Furious Twitter users proceeded to bombard both Solid Gold Bomb and Amazon's social media accounts:

    FYI.

The concept of "Original Sin" is one of the biggest theological issues Islam finds fault with in Christianity. In Islam, it is both of their fault, and Adam is called out, not Eve. See below.

Islam has not theologically blamed women for the world's ills in the same manner as Christianity or Judaism, so please stop lumping them all together.

And as someone who freely chooses to wear hijab: we don't "hide" behind burkas. At the end of the day, no matter what you nor the Muslim Religious Right like to say is true, the purpose of the burka/hijab is not because God tells us to be ashamed of our bodies.

    Ridiculous.

In fact, why blame religious fundies for taking away female agency when you decide to do it for them by thinking to lecture me/other women on what we believe?

    >>> On Adam and Eve --

    QURAN:

And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees (Satan); he refused.

So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.

Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.

And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."

Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"

And Adam and his wife ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.

Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].

    [20:115-122]

    GENESIS

"The woman you put here with me she gave me some fruit from the tree and I ate it." Consequently, God said to Eve:

"I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband and he will rule over you."

    To Adam He said:

"Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree .... Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life..."

Ssssuuuuuuuurrrrrrre. Don't lump Islam in with the other two.

Ignorance is ignorance - regardless of its source.

As for your defense of the Burka, certainly. Wear it. But unless you converted to Islam as an adult and weren't brainwashed into it as a child (which, admittedly, all three Abrahamic religions currently do), the claim is false. YOU may not hide inside it or behind it, as you say, but in MANY islamic cultures you are still REQUIRED to wear it - which does not make it a CHOICE you make.

I was watching the "History Channel" about Bible stories and I don't think it's working out like the religious nuts thought it would. The show that I watched was debunking the tale of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. You know how the RWNJs blame the destruction on homosexuality? Well, the producers actually use science to explain the destruction of S&G. The scientists say it was a meteor.
There was another episode that was debunking the Catholic all-male hierarchy and that the ancient followers of Christ were jealous of Mary Magdalene because Jesus shared many of the mysteries of life with her so they had to sully her reputation by saying that she was a whore. These shows are questioning what the Bible teaches so I don't see how it's a win for Evangelicals, Catholics, Christians or other religious groups.
