President Obama on the mood of the country today concerning the Newtown shooting: ”I haven’t forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we’ve forgotten.”

Courtesy of MSNBC:

“Now’s the time to turn heartbreak into something real,” Obama said at the White House Thursday—more than 100 days after the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown left 26 people dead.

Without mentioning the National Rifle Association specifically, Obama criticized the “powerful voices on the other side” for banking on “running out the clock” on the memory of the tragic shooting and “drowning out the majority of the American people to prevent any of these reforms from happening at all.”

“Their assumption is that people will just forget about it,” he said, while pointing out that the family members with him on stage had not forgotten. ”The people here, they don’t forget. Grace’s dad’s not forgetting. Hadiya’s mom’s not forgotten,” he said, a reference to the parents of 7-year-old Grace McDonnell, who lost her life in the Newtown shooting, and teenager Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot in a Chicago park shortly after performing at the president’s second inauguration.

“The notion that two months or three months after something as horrific as what happened in Newtown happens, and we’ve moved on to other things? That’s not who we are,” Obama said. ”I haven’t forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we’ve forgotten.”

I watched this speech this morning and it was incredibly powerful. If you have not seen it I urge you to take the time to do so, and when you do listen for the silence in the room as the audience absorbs what the President is saying.  There were times when you could literally heard a pin drop.

Today was also the day that we learned more troubling information about Adam Lanza:

Court documents say the gunman who killed 27 people — including 20 young children — in an attack at a Connecticut elementary school, owned several guns in addition to the ones used in the attack.

Search warrants previously sealed from the public showed Thursday the gunman also owned hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Authorities found a holiday card in the gunman's home with a check made out to him from his mother for the purchase of a firearm. They also found papers from the National Rifle Association in the home.

"Hundreds of rounds of ammunition." I cannot even imagine what kind of person feels that is acceptable or reasonable.

They also found papers from the National Rifle Association in the home. Oh right, what was I thinking?

The President is correct, the NRA, and their supporters, are betting on the short memory of the American people to work in their favor, and that soon people will have stopped caring as much about the shooting and will move on to new concerns leaving nothing done to protect our citizens from the next Adam Lanza, James Holmes, or Jared Loughner.

Well I don't know about all of you, but I am not moving on anywhere. And I certainly have not forgotten.

  1. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have not forgotten, either; but I do admit as life goes forward, sometimes we get wrapped up (or at least I do) in our own worries - however petty they may be.

Thanks for the link, wish I read thatu before commenting. The details are chilling and the video of the dad who lost his child is a must watch.

Nancy gave Adam a gift card to buy a gun? He had photos of an unknown dead person wrapped in plastic, and books on aspergers and brain training? Whew!

Isn't it about time for Sarah and Brancy to use Chris Kyle's assassination at the uber rich man's gun range and therapy spa? Kyle is her brave soldier since she can't milk her caint-git-it-right son now that he is such a failure. No family values either. It is money in the bank for Palin to tap those gun nuts. She skipped World DS Day, it is not like her to allow libruls and sane Republicans to dominate media on shooting matters or guns.

I've seen 'caint git right' in reference to Track several times. What does that mean?

The guns and ammunition were purchased by Adam Lanza? They were in his name? He didn't leave the house much, did he order them on-line? His mother is dead now, who would know if she knew what he kept in the house. Some of the arsenal was in her name. The father was removed from what his son and ex-wife were up to. He saw no problems? Adam was mad at him or something and had enough control to keep his father far a way.

There are many people who have secret arsenals. Shocking when they come from the little normal looking tract home down the street. Scary when there is someone with serious mental problems.

We lived in a small Lake Michigan town for a few years, in a modest ranch. Across the road was a not so modest large home that was robbed one weekend. The robbers got guns. Just guns. Having an arsenal and then bragging about it (are you listening, all you FB idiots?) is just asking for trouble. But then, owning guns is asking for someone to die. And it will most likely NOT be an intruder, but you or someone you loved.

Republican Rep. Don Young refers to Latinos using racial slur

Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), in an interview with a local radio station released Thursday, referred to Latinos working on a ranch by using the derogatory term “wetbacks.”

“My father had a ranch. We used to hire 50 or 60 wetbacks and — to pick tomatoes,” Young said in the interview with KRBD. “You know, it takes two people to pick the same tomatoes now. It’s all done by machine.”

The term “wetback” is a slur often used to refer to illegal Mexican immigrants. Merriam-Webster defines it as “a Mexican who enters the United States illegally,” “from the practice of wading or swimming the Rio Grande where it forms the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The Republican National Committee has in recent days and weeks urged the party to adjust its tone on issues of immigration and gay rights and to try harder to appeal to minority communities.

But Young isn’t the first to foil that plan. A Republican National Committee official on Wednesday posted an article to his Facebook page that referenced the “filthy” homosexual lifestyle.

Young, 79, has represented his House district since 1973 and is currently facing an ethics investigation.

Totally O/T, but Gryph..Check out tonight's episode of ABC's "Wife Swap". One of the featured wives was Granny Grifter's BFF, Tea Party lunatic, Gina Loudon. What a piece of work she is (and her husband is quite a whacko, too.) Gina made a comment near the beginning of the show about how she "always wanted to have a Down Syndrome child" when referring to her adoptive son, Sam. (Think Granny Grifter wanted to be like Gina when she "got" Trig?) Gina did herself no favors by appearing on the show. And just like Palin, she quit! She and her hubby did not go through with the two-week "swap" and didn't even have the guts to sit with the other family to discuss how things went.
    Losers!

Less than one day per bullet shot at Newtown? We're not forgetting. I heard a news item on the radio today about the newly released information about Adam Lanza, and almost all of it was covered by Rachel over a month ago. Thirty round magazines, how many times he reloaded, how many bullets shot in less than five minutes.
Yeah, color me surprised, he was mentally ill, owned four or more guns in a cabinet, and a ton of ammo. He played video games and was a loner/recluse.

The President struck the right tone with this speech, and he was wise not to mention the NRA directly. I can't fathom the pain of losing a child, especially to gun violence, just because someone's afraid to have a background check.

We need to push for a vote, make them declare where they stand, and vote accordingly.

Kind of off topic, but more gun totin' GOP hypocrisy - the "I had to pee" defense. The excuse tweets are a riot!!!

    I am not forgetting.

I would like to know what all the Palins have stashed in that monstrosity in Scottsdale? They other properties as well. They may feel a need and constitutional right to have a few missile launchers, those little drones and who knows what more. My gosh if the Feds have been asking associates questions about Dairygate. They probably don't want to hear about Pimpgate. Just saying they may want to be prepared for when the time comes.

President Obama on the mood of the country today concerning the Newtown shooting: ”I haven’t forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we’ve forgotten.”

But he sure forgets the kids caught in the crossfire of his drone wars.

Which brings us to the crux of the whole matter. If the government wants less violence, it should be leading the way by example that violence isn't and acceptable way to settle differences or force your will on people. We have the most violent government in the world and the largest prison population in the world. It's no wonder our whole culture is violent.

If the President really wants to lead, he can start by ending his drone assassination program (I know Bush & Chaney started it, but Obama has taken ownership of it)and stop pushing the rest of the world around with our military might. He can start solving problems with brains and negotiation skills instead of brute force. Otherwise, all he's doing is paying the ending of violence in this country lip service.

Does that mean that you do not support better gun control legislation in this country? That is the issue being discussed here.

President Obama is concerned about the children. Over at Chuck Heath Jr's Facebook, his son wants to know what happened to all of the bullets. Look, Dad, the shelves are empty. What are we going to use for ammo?

After reading about the 50 votes in the Senate for a bill that would require a 2/3 majority to pass any gun control legislation, I decided that today I would contact both of my Senators (Levin and Stabenow) and ask that they talk to their Senate colleagues who are stupid enough to support the NRA and tell them that we Americans, constituents all, want gun control laws with some teeth in them. We want to stop the sale of assault weapons and the kinds of ammunition used in them. I know so little about guns that I don't even know the vocabulary but I do know that I want weapons that kill so easily and randomly off the market.
