I am always amazed at how many Americans seem to feel that there is no legitimate reason for Muslims to be so angry at us, and seem to believe that it is solely the result of their religion with no causal connections linking their actions to our interventions in their countries.
In my opinion there is NO excuse for terrorism, but I can certainly understand why those who feel powerless would like to injure their powerful oppressors in any way that they can.
I also disagree that there is any more of a tendency for violence from Muslims then there is from Christians, and think that it has much more to do with the society in which those religions are practiced.
Having said that I think that ANYTIME the laws are taken directly from the Bible or the Koran that they are ALWAYS going to be more punitive to the populace as a whole and less fair to those who are not in positions of power. And that often means women specifically.
Yeah, like that little Bangladeshi bonfire whose origins can be traced to our (American) desire for closets overflowing with cheap Walmart shirts. That of course has nothing to do with it. We are obtuse arrogant assholes, aren't we?
ReplyDeleteRead the book "Imperial Hubris" if you want a detailed explanation of our botched foreign policies.
ReplyDeleteLet me paraphrase Maher - if an unflattering depiction of Jesus is publicized, lets say, oh I don't know, a cartoon in a Danish newspaper maybe, do the Christians go nuts and start rioting and burning cars? Do so-called Christians have a decades long fatwa against a best-selling, mainstream author? The fact is that Islam as practiced is a much more violent, human rights-violating religion than Christianity. To ignore this fact is simply ignorant. Disclosure: I am an atheist who wishes there were no religion.
ReplyDeleteViolence is prescribed in the Quran. Not once but over a hundred times. Men are also told that they can kill women any time they feel like it and gays are also fair game. It's a disgusting religion and I am supposed to be killed for even saying so. So, yeah, our government has done the wrong things sometimes. It also did in Latin America. The difference? A really ugly religion.
Delete"Men are also told that they can kill women any time they feel like it and gays are also fair game" - that is completely moosecrap.
DeleteChristians are idiots, but Islam is uniquely violent among religions. Mohamed led military actions against non-believers and constantly calls for violence against non-believers in the Quran. Pretending that there is no violent proclivity in Islam is just stupid.
ReplyDeleteConstantly? You just said 100 times above. In a book that has over 77,000 words and 6,236 verses - how can that be 'constant' in any way? Also - "led military actions against non-believers" - the Afghans are doing something like that right now. But context could never matter could it?
DeleteExtremism of any kind is what keeps our world violent - you're just on the opposite side.
So I'm guessing you are yet another person who has NOT read the Bible?
ReplyDeleteI think Christianity over the centuries can rack up as many violent periods and incidents as any other religion. It's certainly nothing to brag about.

Marriage equality had the support of my 91 yr old Dad ( he turned 91 on May 12TH) to my great nieces and nephews in MInnesota carrying the flag of equality. My Dad was unable in 1946 to marry the woman of his dreams(mY Mom) because she was Native American , they went to Canada to marry As far as my Dad, and other Minnesota relatives...it is not our call, though we support equality for all. Congrats to Minnesota, you have done what 150 yrs of Native Americans have asked of you.
ReplyDeleteI used to have respect for Bill Maher, but he's lost it long ago. I'm glad Greenwald smacked him down. Shows how simple minded Maher's views are of what America's foriegn policy history is and how childish his views of Muslims are.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Glenn spoke up, as much as I like Bill, he's clearly wrong this time. Unfortunately, this POV (Muslims are more violent than other religions) is held by a lot of folks in America who buy into our "superiority" in the world. With that power, comes responsibility.
ReplyDeleteWe were supporting Saddam Hussein's military for years before he became the ultimate "evildoer".
This ignorance has to end.

"Surprisingly, Islam is now condemned for not giving women their rights, but in the past it was blamed for a totally opposite reason. Riffat Hassan (2007, p. 162) argues that “propaganda against Islam and Muslims is nothing new in the West. It is as old as the first chapter of Islamic history, when the new faith began to move into territories largely occupied by Christians.” Europeans always constructed Islam as a civilizational adversary and the religion, an antithesis of European values. Accordingly, during the medieval period, when women in Europe were denied many basic human rights which Muslim women had enjoyed since the seventh century, Islam was denigrated for being gender egalitarian."
