Whenever I hear Christians complaining about being persecuted.

Yeah I know it can be troubling to the people who have all the power in this country to be challenged on their beliefs, or asked not to insert them into our public education and politics, but hey at least WE are not tearing off your breasts nor crushing your scrotum.

So let's keep a little perspective shall we?

    "...a little perspective...."?

    I think not in our lifetimes, Gryphen. We are feared too much because we are free of the crazy, ignorant shackles religious people tie themselves up with!

    [Please allow me to note that I am not speaking of people who have a simple faith by which they live and who allow others the right of choice. I personally disagree with them, but at least there is no animosity.

    I reserve my statements for those who would prefer to force others to accept ONLY what they teach; to believe ONLY what they preach; to HATE who and/or what they TELL us to. You know, like christianity and judaism and islam.}

    Very sad that the rest of us may be relegated to collateral damage as "cultures" clash......like watching a slow motion trainwreck.....from the caboose.

    I am more than a little disappointed that you haven't written about Minnesota voting for marriage equality.

    Madalyn Murray O'Hair was a brave woman who stood up to enormous persecution in her lifetime. She went on talk shows and braved hostile audiences and hosts alike. On her first appearance on Phil Donohue's show he told her to shut up. The police never even bothered to investigate her disappearance. We owe so much of what we have today because of Madalyn Murray O'Hair's bravery and commitment.

    But we are all God's children, and he loves us, he is vengeful, he is merciful, he sent his only son to die horribly for our sins, he made us in his image, he will cast us into hell. . .I believe in God, the Creator, but this man-made "God" is a bi-polar disaster.

      It seems you fail to realize that the God you believe in is, in effect, a man-made god. Unless, of course, you have personally met him in the flesh (which I very much doubt), rather than in your daydreams.

      You can believe whatever you like, of course......

    Ah, the wild-eyed Mrs. O'Hair... I remember her well.

    Actually, while the medieval church and state really did those kinds of things to people -- and it was more like 900-1000 years rather than 1500 -- it wasn't so much for atheism, which was a rare commodity in those days. It was more for heresy, treason, and political reasons. So as usual, Mrs O'Hair exaggerates and stretches things to make her point.

      Given the consequences that admitting to atheism would trigger, it's hardly surprising that it was a "rare commodity". Rare as it was, you are saying that the persecutions simply weren't just limited to atheists, so the church was really an equal opportunity persecutor. They only persecuted people who didn't agree with them about everything.

      It only lasted 900-1000 years though, so it was ok.

    I was "introduced" to Madalyn's work by my Roman Catholic School. We were banned from consuming any of her books, documentaries, etc.. I owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude. They also "recommended" "Bob and Carol Ted and Alice" and "Catcher in the Rye". Two out of three ain't bad.

    I remember when her husband died, and she fought like "hell" to have him buried in Arlington National Cemetery under the letter "A", the symbol for Atheism. She won and he's the ONLY one there with that symbol on his monument.
