Minnesota becomes 12th state to legalize marriage equality. That's right, freaking Minnesota!

Courtesy of Star Tribune:

With deafening cheers and overwhelming emotion, the Minnesota Senate voted 37-30 to legalize same-sex marriage.

“Today, love wins,” said Sen. Tony Lourey, DFL-Kerrick.

The vote, on the heels of a vote last week in the House, brings to a close a decade of debate over marriage that has echoed through the Capitol, bringing thousands of friends and foes of gay marriage to its marbled dome to express their deeply held feelings. The measure next moves to Gov. Mark Dayton, who will welcome it with his signature in a celebratory ceremony at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the south steps of the Capitol.

Once it is signed, Minnesota will become the twelfth state to legalize same sex-marriage. "It's historic and I can never be so proud of this body and of Minnesotans," said Sen. Jeff Hayden, DFL-Minneapolis. On the Senate floor, Hayden said that his wife is white and noted that just 50 years ago, his loving relationship would have been barred.

Good for Minnesota right? Well not completely, after all not EVERYBODY was quite so happy to "touch the rainbow."

Sen. Dan Hall, R-Burnsville, said up until the last he was praying for a miracle and the Senate to reject the bill.

“Some people have said that they are concerned about being on the right side of history. I am more concerned about being on the right side of eternity,” said Hall.

Yes make sure not to do the right thing in life, for fear of being punished for it after death.

I think that should be the new Christian motto.

I think at least one couple should be ecstatic that this law has now passed.

Now finally THIS deviant marriage will finally be legal in the eyes of Minnesota, and Marcus can stop pretending he does not know what to do with a hot throbbing foot long piece of meat.

And Marcus is f-a-a-abulously ecstatic about it.

Love that last sentence of yours!

It was a hard fight but I can assure you it would have never come up if the dominionists in the state hadn't tried to pass the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage forever. Once the people got mobilized the election went over to a total DFL government and this was the first order of business. Most of us here in MN are tired as hell of these crazy nutcases trying to push their religion into our lives and the pushback is just getting started.

Proud of my home state and everyone that worked hard, including getting the correct people elected, to have equality in marriage for all Minnesotans.

Marcus DOES provide comic relief. You get the sense he knows it’s all bullshit, but goes along with his wife and her supporters for the money and laughs.

    1. I keep telling my non-Wisconsinite friends that Wisconsin does have a long history of progressive politicians-Fighting Bob LaFollette, Milwaukee mayor and Socialist, Frank Zeidler, Gaylord Nelson, and Russ Feingold. We shouldn't be defined by Ryan and Walker.

It's funny. During the 2012 Presidential election, one of my friends who lives in Chicago asked me, "Does Paul Ryan make you ashamed to be from Wisconsin?" I quickly answered, "Paul Ryan makes me ashamed to have blue eyes!"

On-topic: Way to go, Minnesota. I'm thrilled over this news! I really think this is a step in the right direction. Yay!

This gives me more hope that Michelle Bachman will finally lose her seat back there! Good for Minnesota! Being heavy Dems assuredly has helped in passing this vote!!!

    Wisconsin should be next!!!

Someone needs to tell Marcie there's no elegant way to chow down on a big piece of meat; just go for it with gusto.

Afterwards try to convince everyone you're really straight.

Ah, more gasoline for the "Stop Taking Stuff Away from Us" crowd.

Dear "Stop Taking Stuff Away from Us" crowd:

Nothing was taken away from you. You still have your religion, you still have your church, you still have your marriage, you still have your family, and you still have your politics.

This is not a take something away issue. Nothing was taken away from you. Instead, something was given to someone. Someone was given the right to live and love as openly and as freely and as legally as you.

    Smile!

In addition, within their religion bubble, they can still discriminate. Their church doesn't have to perform gay marriages, they can keep gay families out, they can tell that congregations that gay = evil, etc.

Oh yeah, it does mean that if they enter than BUSINESS World, they have to abide by its rules, rather than impose their religious rules on others.his Just like this atheist can't tell her customers she won't serve them based on their sky buddy mythology, much as she may want to. Too bad, so sad, suck it up, buttercup.

Poll: Majority In Arizona Backs Gay Marriage

    http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/poll-majority-in-arizona-backs-gay-marriage

    Yes, FREAKIN' Arizona!

Gryph, you may not know it but everyone in Minnesota is not like that loon Bachmann. There is a huge democratic, liberal, progressive faction and there is not the backwar4ds mentality that she holds. Remember, the settlrs in Minnesota often came from Scandinavia, a very NON-religious part of Europe. So even though there are loud voices of unreason, they are not the majority voices, by any means.

And here I thought it was Minnesota's closeness to Canada that was the major influence!!!!! Next up (based on that theory) North Dakota, then Montana, but probably not Idaho LOL

The best part of this is that Bachmann just knows that "God" will bring a big disaster to the Minneapolis/St Paul area because of gay marriage so she is threatening to move to another state. One she mentioned is Oregon. I'd love to see her try to fit in there! Please go, Michele!

  16. I don't know that this deserves "freaking Minnesota!"; I remember my home state being pretty enlightened when I grew up there, though admittedly there's been a troubling trend toward it being more conservative over the past couple of decades. Still, the one crazy lady aside it has only been a slight trend, and let's hope this move indicates that it's turning around again!

And as for the Far Right Evangelicals? FUCK 'EM!

I just hope I am around long enough to see it become the law of the land. Then I can snub MY nose at THEM, as they have been doing to me!

      Okay. Who's next?

Minnesota has always had conservatives like any other state. The carpetbaggers started moving in in the 80s and in the 90s they started getting elected to local offices. We threw a bunch of them out of the legislature in the last election and a few of them scandaled themselves out. We just need to get the exterminators out to the 6th district and get Batshit Bachmann out of there.
Most of my family was extremely conservative but never like the wacko teabaggers that have come out from under the rocks in the last few years. Some of the uneducated, rural, toothless, factions of the family do follow the wackos, but once they drop dead from their fast food induced diabetes and heart disease, the rest of us who are sane will be in the majority.

Minnesota is a lot more liberal than you think...Dem Gov, 2 Dem Senators, the majority of Congress Reps are Dems, Dems control the Sen and Legislature. The only thing that gives Minny a bad name is Michael and Marcia Bachmann.

  20. I am embarrassed for California. We *could* have been at the forefront. We should have been.

And here we are. Still mired in Proposition 8 crap.

Mormons. Catholics. Yeah, I blame them all. Their money paid for this atrocity.

I'm still boycotting buying anything manufactured in Utah or by any known Mormons. That includes Amway, Fuller Brush and their other pyramid money-makers.
