It looks like Ireland picked a courageous Prime Minister.

I so LOVE it when politicians stand up to threats from the church.

You can read more about this new law here.

The law dos not lift Ireland's ban on abortion but it DOES provide an exception to protect the life of the mother.

Apparently this is in response to the totally unnecessary death of  Savita Halappanavar.

Get raped and have the baby. Ireland has a long way to go.

Abortions rates don't necessarily rise when abortions are legal "on demand".

The article linked below has an excellent discussion of how much abortion rates vary among countries where it is legal "on demand". Austria have very low rate, Estonia's is high.

The article posits that "Whether or not a woman chooses an abortion depends on a lot more than what is legally allowed. Sex education, availability of contraception, and cultural norms, are more important determinants."

Add in "the economy" stoopid" and access to healthcare (not just bc) and access to education, too.

Anon at 10:26 am. You're absolutely right. Economics plays a large role in the issue as does health care access. I think that the rate would go down here in the US if we had universal health care and support like child care centers, etc. for single mothers. The rate would be reduced everywhere, of course, if males were more responsible about sex and its potential aftermath.

What Ireland does is allow women with the financial means and leisure to travel to countries where they can easily obtain a safe, legal abortion. What Ireland is doing is forcing poor women to birth babies.

"United Left Alliance lawmaker Clare Daly told the Irish parliament Wednesday that the bill would not stop the "exportation of abortion" -- referring to the Irish women who travel to Britain for terminations to circumvent the ban."

The draft legislation's section for a suicidal mother is "When the risk to the pregnant woman's life is from suicide, the assessment must be made by an obstetrician or gynecologist, along with two psychiatrists."

That's enough to make any women suicidal! I suppose it's the government that selects the psychiatrists after certifying them as suicide detection experts.

I've had some pretty obtuse gynecologists over the years. Having any of those decide whether I was suicidal, is terrifying.

  5. The Irish Government still has a ways to go to shrug off the still sadly fitting satire from Jonathan Swift. His, A Modest Proposal, wonders what to do with all those babies.

    Meanwhile, our Dick speaks.

"Dick Cheney: Gerald Ford's Nixon pardon healed nation during 'historic,' divisive era"

Sounds like Dick Cheney wants President Obama to welcome him to the White House with open arms. At the time I did not have the impression that the pardon of Richard Nixon did anything positive. Of course, it assuaged Republican egos but I could care less about them.

People just need to ignore this asshole and think about the wonderful jobs President Obama and VP Biden (and their administration) are doing for our country.

Why is no one in the press acknowledging the fact that North Korea has pulled their missiles from their sites? Remember, the fat ass Republicans were pushing like hell that we should bomb the hell out of them and President Obama was steady and calm as usual. I believe it was McCain and the girly girl, Lindsey Graham, that were promoting war ASAP!

Plus, we have a Dow that just hit a high of 15,000 today! Think how many are going to be able to vacation this year or next because their investments have rebounded so well. Shouldn't Obama's administration get credit for this too? We have rebounded in so many ways since he initially took office.

Now, McCain and Graham are hollering that we need to go to war in the middle east. Republicans SUCK in so many of their positions across the nation. Vote them out and get Dems in as the majority folks! We so need some sane folks in government across the nation....especially in the U.S. Congress!

Thank you, President Obama and VP Biden! I'm delighted I voted for you both times!
