The view outside my house. Today.

Crappy I-Phone picture out my front door
Crappy I-Phone picture out my back door.
Now look I am a lifelong Alaskan.

Rarely, and I mean RARELY, does the weather effect me.

I don't suffer from SAD, drink excessively when it is dark, or bitch and moan because I have to shovel my driveway for the third time in one day. (Okay maybe I HAVE done that last one a few times.)

And if you are one of those bitchy people who is always complaining about the weather, or about how you have to eat cartons of Hagen Dazs ice cream to deal with your depression, or how getting out of bed is so hard because it is always dark outside, I have no sympathy for you.  Get out, because some of us like it here, and we will like it even more once you shut the hell up!

However,..having said that...WTF Alaska?

I mean come on!

Before yesterday there was not a flake of snow still left near my house. I just got my bike tuned up to start riding this week, my house is in the process of being painted, and Sunday was the day I had finally decided to get off my ass and rake my yard.

You know the yard that is now covered in an inch and half of new fallen snow. In May!

Yes I know, this is Alaska, we have late snowfalls.

But I am here to tell you that THIS is unusual even for here.

Now if you will excuse me I have to eat a carton of Haagen Dazs ice cream and go get back into bed.

(P.S. Here is more about our unseasonably low temperatures.)

  1. See. No global warming. Glen Beck told you this.
Oh, we'll, at least enjoy the beauty of it. It really is pretty. (Says me who doesn't have to shiver and shovel!)

  2. Ha ha- well if it is any comfort to you Jesse, I've seen snow storms in April in Massachusetts.

This morning I looked out the window (here in Anchorage) and said, "Oh, for Pet's sake!" Then I opened up the Anchorage Daily News and the headline was, "Oh, for Pete's sake!" I am SO ready for a little summer!

I've shoveled snow in May in Massachusetts.

But I was going to say what Pogo did when I logged on here -- the worst part is not your shoveling snow in the springtime, but that every know-it-all will take this as an opportunity to say that this "proves" that there's no global warming.

Tell them it's called climate change, they need look no further than the scientific data on the polar ice cap to believe.

As for this weather, I call it Alaska's way of keeping the riff-raff out. It sure has given everyone something to talk about.

Tell them that the most dire predictions call for a change of 2 degrees -- TWO DEGREES! Which is enough to do major damage but not enough to be felt every day.

But....this change in climate can also cause weird swings in weather, like this.

I live in Chicago and we had about a week of 60 degree weather -- IN JANUARY!!!

And in the end of April we had massive 40 degree swings in temperature!!! Also, we probably had less than 10 days where the temperatures were below freezing. I've lived her ten years and it was not like this when I first made my way here

That is absolutely beautiful. I guess some people get tired of it living in it year after year, but I live in Vegas and it's gonna be 90 today.

    Enjoy the day, everyone!

We had four weeks of foot-high snow storms in April into May here in Colorado. Now everything is green and lovely.

What ever. When we lived in Utah we had snow on Mother's Day. As a Californian, I had never seen snow anywhere near my house, only on trips to Big Bear in the dead of winter.
I thought it was pretty cool to see cherry trees with blooms covered in snow. It went away quickly, but weather can be strange anywhere you live.

Wow. Sorry for you. I used to get depressed because there was still snow on the ground in May when I lived there. My dog Speck loved it. She loved to pee in snow. Would walk over to the last pile of snow on the shady side of the house to pee. Go figure.

New snow in May would really depress me.

  10. I just came in from mowing the lawn here in Austin TX. I did this chore early in the day because, like yesterday, it will most likely be 95 degrees from about 5-9 p.m. this afternoon. Here is the punchline: this is the coldest May I have experienced in years, possibly ever, in this Texas location. Last year it was almost this warm beginning in March! Of course Al Gore is a lunatic and climate change is nothing more than a left wingnut hoax.. and I'm Frosty the Snowman!

  11. I live in Michigan and we get hundreds of inches of snow each year. See our snow thermometer here: http://www.pasty.com/snow/

We have had just a little bit in May. The last big storm was the week in April. So far this year over 300 inches. So sick to death of shoveling, shoveling, shoveling. Bah humbug.

I do have severe SAD, but cope with it (dawn simulator, light box, vitamin D). It is definitely nothing to sneer at. It wreaks havoc with multiple biochemical systems.

But spring is coming. The daffies and tulips will be blooming in a couple of weeks and the crocuses and snowdrops are in bloom now. The days are getting longer. Even now, there is still a sunset glow in the sky well after 10 pm.

    1. Oh, my. Here in coastal Oregon our crocuses appeared in February, our daffodils and hyacinths are a month gone, our tulips just finished fading and turning yellow, and the lilacs have been blooming for over a week. Most of the flowering trees -- crabapple, plum, cherry -- have already bloomed and winds have scattered the blossoms. Our strawberries have blossoms already.

This country is SO vast that it's like we're in a dozen countries with separate climates.

We're looking at homes in Coos Bay Oregon for an eventual relocation. We can't move for a few more years but keep finding wonderful properties there that we are thinking of purchasing and renting until we can occupy. Oregon seems to be about right for us climate wise, even if it is really rainy (trading snowy winters for rainy ones, and we may hate it but we at least want to try).

  17. I've been trying to follow Alaska Panhandle and Anchorage weather and temperatures on a casual basis this year because my sister wants to take another 7 day cruise up that way.

I've been telling her THIS time of year, though, is no time to drop everything and take one of those last-minute cheapest-fares-yet cruises every cruise line offers, not up to Alaska anyway.

I'll have to show her your pictures. Hopefully the Arctic air will retreat some time later this summer?

Sat afternoon in Ketchikan. It has been raining for a week. There was a major landslide in Sitka last week. The locals, (I arrived in Jan) tell me this is a normal summer. Should a done my HW before I moved here.

  18. I should probably report that the weather forecast up here calls for sunny skies the next few days so I imagine this will all melt of quickly.

The only question remaining is should I go buy that new lawnmower now? Or is nature not done fucking with me yet?

  19. I lived in St. Louis, MO for 5 years and developed SAD. I am originally from the SUNNY SOUTH and had not dealt with 9-10 months of gloom, cold, and icy personalities. The disorder and the St. Louis climate was (in part) the cause of my divorce from my husband who grew up in sunny southern California. My sister lived in AK for 3 years and is now living in Minnesota so the harsh climate affects different people differently. But you can have the snow and ice and Moose. I'll take humidity and fire ants any day. Sorry you're having a "never-ending winter".

The worst part of this weather event is not the snow, in fact that may be our only saving grace. The worst thing is the low temps. It is 25 at my house right now and dropping to 15-20 tonight. The perennials that have come up, even in this cool spring, are going to suffer greatly or completely die in these temps, so a nice blanket of snow is their only chance at surviving the night. I just did a walk around my gardens and it's so heartbreaking to see beautiful new perennial shoots, some as tall as 8 inches, covered in snow, but hopefully it will be enough to merely leave them injured by cold and not killed off! Fingers crossed....

This is almost funny, right? My new motorcycle jacket should arrive today. My new helmet isn't far behind. My yard was working on greening up. And the snow still falls. Are we sure it isn't April Fools Day?
Gonna go for some ice cream later because, well, you know, nothing keeps us Alaskans from our ice cream. Not even a freak snow storm!

You aren't alone... Though it is in the lower 90s in Colorado now, my late April-early May gas bill was higher than the average for the entire winter due to late spring storms... including several real dumpers as recently as May 1, when we officially measured 20 inches in parts of Fort Collins, just north of Denver.

Expect more of it. (and I'm not complaining either).... Now when it gets over 100 degrees F, THEN I'll complain... (wink)

Well, join the party. I've lived in MN all my life and never seen a winter hang on like this one. We, my kid and I, actually went on snow shoveling strike when the last one came through. Fortunately my neighbors felt the same way. Seriously, we experienced one of the latest ice outs in history and just last week the ice finally went out at the lake by my cabin. Good thing we aren't concerned about climate change.

Oh, Gryph, honey, I feel your pain. I lived in AK for twenty years and one thing I loved about Alaskans is how they don't gripe about the weather. What good does that do, like, ever? Alaskans just suck it up. You've conveyed that perfectly in your post.

These people in the lower 48 complain constantly. Me? I lived in Seattle for several years and winter never even happened. It's like endless summer down there for someone from Anchorage, but the locals complain NONSTOP. It annoyed me way more than any rain ever did. It's got to be really bad for Alaskans to even mention weather, but this spring is getting to us. There was about a foot of snow at Denali Park last night, and that is a bit much to take in late May. ((hugs)) to you!
