Australian politicians have apparently decided to try and out stupid American politicians. Oh it's on!

Courtesy of the Sydney Morning Herald:

“No one,” Tony Abbott told a Melbourne gathering of Liberal Party faithful, “however smart, however well-educated, however experienced … is the suppository of all wisdom”.

The Opposition Leader's travelling mentor, Philip Ruddock, squirmed and the Victorian MP Josh Frydenberg took a few seconds to register what his leader had said.

“Suppository?” Mr Frydenberg mouthed to a grey-haired man standing next to him. The man nodded gravely, perhaps recognising that Mr Abbott intended to say repository, a place where things are stored.

As so often happens these days with political gaffes, within 30 minutes the hashtag #suppository was trending on Twitter, accompanied by photo-shopped images of Mr Abbott with suppository-inspired captions (“know your enema”, “squeezing out a policy”, etc).

It didn't help that Mr Abbott's slip-up reminded people of Tony Windsor's claim that the Opposition Leader told him he would do anything to secure a minority government during negotiations after the last election, except "sell my arse".

Now of course this comes on the heels of the crazy One Party candidate who thought that Islam was a country.
"Okay look I quit, can we stop talking about it now?"

What's up Australia? First you show off your Sarah Palin wannabe, and now you have a George Bush impersonator?

Well give it up Australia, your politicians will NEVER out dumb America's politicians!

Have you forgotten about this guy?

That's right Aussies, we're number one! We're number one! We're number....wait.

Update: I wrote this post last night before bed, and thought that my comparison of Australian and American gaffes was brilliant and completely original, only to watch the Daily Show later that night to see this

"She's not just Sarah Palin, she's turbo Sarah Palin." Damn you John Oliver!

  1. I had to go back and comfort myself with another viewing of Cenk and Reza. There really are smart people in this world; thank you God.

Something’s wrong with Trump, though, he used to have a pretty good mind.

The problem with Australia is that geographically it is at the bottom of the globe. So everyone is standing upside down and too much blood rushes to their brains. If you took the exact same people and put them in Europe or Asia or North America they'd actually be quite smart.

    Sarah Palin told me that.

Don't hold your breath on that one Jesse:

Joe Miller is Back – Says Obama is Establishing a Religious Apartheid

To be a Republican in this country and to run for office – and to stay in that office once you have won it (as Indiana’s Dick Lugar and others have discovered) – you have to stand up and make up a bunch of crazy stuff. It doesn’t have to have any relationship to reality.

In fact, it is better that it doesn’t because the target demographic just hates reality. Hates it with a purple passion.

So we have Alaska’s Tea Party senate candidate Joe Miller (as if Alaska didn’t have enough problems with Sarah Palin threatening to run) claiming at the FAMiLY leadership summit on August 10, that President Barack Obama is “engaged in a form of systematic spiritual and religious apartheid.”

Sorry, but Lugar lost because in his arrogance - and idiot Indiana law - he didn't have to live in Indiana - and didn't for over thirty years.

As a Democrat who recognized that there were sane, practical Republicans (a decade ago this was true) I voted for Lugar a few times - his foreign policy experience was very good - and they had to be very, very superior to their democratic opponent for me to do so. But Lugar was so out of touch with his constituency it became impossible.

We have many weird, supposedly religious, idiotic political people in Alaska! Sarah Palin tops the list, of course! (Even though she is registering as 'entertainment' and a JOKE now!

Alaska is a proven corrupt 'red' state and the majority of the Republicans are an embarrassment to the small population of the state!

It's time the state goes back to being 'blue' and to be proud of the politicians elected to lead us!

    Vote the Republicans out!!!!

OK, so 2014, let's get out from behind the computer and GOTV - be sure your friends are registered, get them and minorities and elderly to the polls.

In the last campaign, I attended parties for Barack Obama. Made phone calls and was able to help an elderly African American woman vote by telling her of the likely long lines - she took a folding chair so was able to endure the long lines.

      Get out, get involved. GOTV!!!!!!

As the great Molly Ivins once made this distinction:
"There are two kinds of linguistic missteps, the typos and the thinkos. Typos are the processing glitches that intercede between a thought and its expression. They can make you look foolish, but they aren't really the signs of an intellectual or ethical deficiency, the way thinkos are. It's the difference between a sentence that expresses an idea badly and a sentence that expresses a bad idea."

This sounds more like a typo - just a glitch when reaching for a word in a pressure situation. A class valedictorian, who switches "mother" and "father" in a graduation speech isn't stupid, just nervous- a typo. But a valedictorian, who says that at 18, they are self-made and their results are solely the result of their own effort and yeah! anarchy is an idiot committing a thinko.

This was a typo - the Aussie SP's error was a thinko - she really thought Islam was a country.

Islam isn't a country? The next thing that you'll be telling me is that Africa isn't a country either. Remind me again, which one is our friend, North or South Korea?

Oh, hey, Sarah? I know you read IM and that you also like to keep up on the latest in death panel news.

I've helped you from doing too much reading today by logging into gawker and finding out all about a man who was diagnosed with acute leukemia. Because he was out of work for three months due to illness, he was fired. He and his wife frantically signed up for COBRA coverage (18 months of his old coverage, paid by them). He's facing a $500,000 bone marrow transplant -- his only hope of recovery.

In her haste to send off their first month's premium check, the man's wife made out a check for $518, and sent it to the insurance company, which quickly cashed the check. Only later, it turns out, that the actual premium was $518.46, which she'd neglected to notice.

Now, it appears, they have no medical coverage because they didn't send in the right premium and he will not be able to have the bone marrow transplant.

So: chalk up one for the insurance companies' death panels.
Please note that, under the ACA, this would not have happened and his life would be saved -- at least, he'd be able to have the transplant.

We'd love to have your considered opinion on this case, Sarah.

That's all that Sarah Palin has become, a political punchline. Lawrence O'Donnell showed a portion of her short appearance on Fox, last Saturday, and she looks even crazier at night than she does during the daytime. She wore a shiny, ruffled red satin blouse, so if Palin was trying to look "professional," she succeeded, but it wasn't the broadcasting profession that she looked like.

LOD played her tirade against Governor Christie, accusing him (twice) of being rogue and avant guarde. (I thought that Sarah liked to go rogue. I guess that's only for her). She also claimed that Christie had a YouTube videographer following him around. Hint to Sarah: YouTube does not hire videographers. People send in their videos. Christie is probably putting together a video to use in a political campaign. As Keith Olbermann said, "That woman is an idiot!" Avant guarde? Who is she fooling with that fancy talk?
