The parents of a 12-year-old girl who died in February were arrested on manslaughter charges by Albany police Thursday morning after allegedly not providing necessary medical treatment.
Travis Rossiter, 39, and Wenona Rossiter, 37, allegedly withheld medical attention for their daughter, Syble. The girl died Feb. 5 at their home in the 500 block of SE Queen Avenue.
Investigators looked into the circumstances of the case for months before deciding on the charges.
“The 12-year-old had a treatable medical condition and the parents did not provide adequate and necessary medical care to that child. And that, unfortunately, resulted in the death of her on February 5 of this year,” said Albany Police Capt. Eric Carter.
When asked if she would have survived if she had been treated, he said, “That’s what I was briefed on. Yes.”
Linn County Medical Examiner Dr. Gary Goby told KOIN 6 News the girl died from complications of Type 1 diabetes.
Carter said the family belongs to the Church of the First Born near Brownsville.
A church website cites a verse from James in the Bible: “If any be sick, call for the elders of the church. Let them pray over him, anointing him with oil, in the name of the Lord.”
In 2012, an Oregon City couple — who also belongs to the Church of the First Born — pleaded guilty to negligent homicide after their son died of an infection caused by a burst appendix. They were sentenced to five years probation.

ReplyDeleteI still don't see how that precludes medical treatment. That poor girl must have had an agonizing, painful, short, brutish life.
Even if they want to believe that part of the Bible, those fucking morons need to remember that was the only treatment they had back in Biblical times. We have evolved as has the study of medicines. They need to be kicked out of the gene pool.

DeleteThis is the third case in the past few years here in Oregon. The parents all belong tote same fundamentalist church. A couple was convicted of manslaughter recently. Apparently the message still has not gotten through to these folks.

ReplyDeleteThere are studies that have shown (I know scientific studies) that in turbulent times, and times of change -- such as the economic upheaval we've lived through, immigration, wars -- some people willingly give up their autonomy and freedom to a "higher power" -- some belief system that gives them strict rules and guidelines. To stray outside those rules is too threatening to their fragile selves.

Our President was right when he said that some people "cling to their guns and religion." Of course, by saying this, he made enemies of gun owners and

Diabetes is a silent killer, the sad thing is it's easily manageable by diet, exercise and medicine. Reading a fairy tale about lazarus, praying, anointing with oil have been proven not to work. The only "Sin" this poor child had was being born to two religious zealot wackjobs.

DeleteI have an adult friend who seems to have been brainwashed by religion that everything can be cured and cured without medical interventions. She acts conflicted seeing a doctor for a diagnosis then refusing treatment even for a thyroid supplement upset she can't find a self cure for a hormone deficiency on the internet that would validate what her church teaches. She is convinced the medical consequences of thyroid hormone deficiency are untruths used to sell unnecessary medications.

Looking at the photos of the parents above they did not even choose diet, exercise for health.
