Before you start to feel superior, you need to understand that if the Christian Fundamentalists in THIS country had their way our women would be treated in a manner very similar.
Freedom and progress do not come from the pages of a religious text, it comes from the repudiation of those religious texts.
Shouldn't that be "refudiation?"
ReplyDeleteHow and why the christian mullahs miss "all are equal in the sight of God," is inexplicable.
ReplyDeleteSad to say but this also looks sort of like a crowded train in my big inner city. The men in suits sit and the women who get on the crowded train later, even if pregnant , stand or sit on floor.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why Christian fundamentalists and right wing nut jobs in this country are so afraid of Sharia law, since it seems to capture their beliefs so well
ReplyDeleteTake off the hijab and shoes, put on a cross, get 'er pregnant and it's hard to tell the difference between then.
DeleteThe ultimate irony is that Sarah should be very thankful for the progressives in this country. After all, they have been the ones to empower Sarah to grift for money and make a fool of herself on Fox News. If the tea party jackasses she aligns with had their way, Sarah would be stuck all day long in the kitchen scrubbing.
ReplyDeleteShe might be stuck in the kitchen all day but I highly doubt she'd be scrubbing OR cooking!
DeleteOh, if Todd were a good christian fundamentalist, he would beat her until she gets her scrubbing and other chores done.
DeleteIsn't there something in some of the family values handbooks that encourages that?
Let's review, shall we?
ReplyDeleteIn the Muslim world, women have their own separate section of the mosque, but they can't mix with the men. They must be completely covered up, head to toe.
For orthodox Jews, the women are not only separated, they have screen or curtain between the sexes. Very modest dress is required
In the very "conservative" Christian sects and cults, women are often allowed to sit with the males, but they must have their heads covered, and must wear long dresses and expose very little skin
The head covering is to show their submissive role because men are superior beings. Some sects won't even let women talk during services or teach anyone but children.
The obvious gender oppression and prejudice is common to all three religions, as well as subjecting women to being brood mares, and chained to their roles in the home for the most part.
A.J.Billings: ... And all three religions come from the Middle East...

ReplyDeleteAllow me to give you a plausible context in which the following picture may have been taken:
Compared to the woman on the left, the women in the middle are very young-- they could either be (1) journalists (2) journalism students
If they are journalists, they appear to be the only journalists in the room since nobody else is taking notes, it is very well possible that the male journalists are separated and in some other row, also without seats
If they are journalism students (which the backpack etc. leads me to think they are), see above. Journalism students anywhere in the world are deprioritized.
Now in terms of the woman on the left vs. the women in the middle and why the dudes haven't gotten up and let all the women sit down (1) almost everyone there is SENIOR compared to the YOUNG women, in Iranian culture seniority almost always wins our over chivalry (2) given that NOBODY else is taking notes, it's possible that those seats are reserved for government officials, and associated individuals, with journalists given a little space right in the middle
Maybe they just came as a group and got in late, and had to sit on the ground
Is Iran a patriarchal society in which women's rights are marginalized? Yes. Is people sitting on the ground evidence that some guy stood there and was like "YOU WOMEN, YOU SIT ON GROUND"? Uh, no.

What need of racists or Muslim men to oppress Muslim women when you all do it so well yourselves? Because these women are in black/covered, they must be poor helpless women who need some white male savior, right?
Thank goodness there was a place in the world where people can come and practice the religion of their choice ( or no religion at all). That we can say, think, and do as we please in the pursuit of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, with no one judging us. That we have the basic human right of free speech, right to bear arms, if we desire, right to privacy, and innocent unless(and until proven innocent), and the rest that were acknowledged in the bill of rights. They weren't given to us, by the bill of rights, rather acknowledged by them, so that these simple andbasic human rights cannot be voted away... or executive powered away.
ReplyDeleteIt is great to say that we don't need some of them, or that since you're not doing anything wrong, you don't care, or that those hateful right wingers deserve it, but when power shifts, and suddenly you are at the other end, and just because your avatar has a rainbow, or you end your emails with pro choice quotes, you are suddenly suspect of terrorist sympathies, and have to fight the current administration--be it IRS, or ACA, or whatever, ...if it is not right to single you out for expressing your beliefs then what is going on isn't right, either.
