Man blows up family dog because it "had the devil in it."

Courtesy of KOIN:

A father with children in the house who was preparing for “the Rapture” blew up his family’s Labrador Retriever because the devil was inside the dog, court documents showed.

Christopher Dillingham, 45, allegedly attached an explosive device to his dog and detonated it around 4 a.m. Sunday outside their home.

Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown, who lives nearby, said the explosion woke him up.

“It sounded like a high-power rifle outside my window,” he said.

A slew of 911 calls sent deputies to Dillingham’s home. They found the remains of the dog strewn about the yard and arrested Dillingham on the spot.

Documents obtained by KOIN 6 News show Dillingham told Skamania County deputies “the world is going to end” because of a nuclear strike and he was preparing.

When they asked him why he was throwing items out of his house and onto his lawn, he said he believed “the souls of demons” were inside the metal objects in the house, the documents said.

His ex-girlfriend, he told the deputies, gave him the dog, named Cabella, and “put the devil in it.” He allegedly told the deputies he made the explosive device on his home work bench using black powder from fireworks.

He then allegedly strapped it around the dog’s neck and fed the dog treats to keep it from trying to wriggle out of the bomb. He also allegedly told the deputies he stepped behind a wall before triggering the bomb because he did not want to get injured by flying debris.

The dog was decapitated.

Well it could have been worse I guess, at least he did not think his children were possessed by the devil.

However the fact that there are people in this day and age who actually think that possession by demons and devils is a REAL thing, and who are preparing for the Rapture as if its impending arrival is a reality, should be troubling to EVERY person living in the world today.

This kind of suspension of critical thinking is frightening, ESPECIALLY when you consider that the man is parenting children who are using him as a role model to help them to understand and interact with the world around them.

Without the cover of religion to camouflage this obvious delusional thinking, this man may have received help much earlier, and in time to save a dog who did nothing to deserve its fate.

I don't wonder, I know that all religious belief is nothing more than mental illness. Any of it, and all of it. Sick people, that's why I personally give any religious person a very, very wide margin of contact from me and my family. They are delusional and crazy.

I am trying to acknowledge this man's mental illness, but because I am not a True Believer, I cannot find any compassion in my heart for his cold-blooded murder of an innocent who trusted him.

The law will simply rap him on his knuckles and let him off with a short jail sentence or small fine for animal cruelty unless someone petitions for him to be evaluated and committed, but he should not be allowed to be around his children or any living creature.

He is a menace to himself and his community. He is not a Christian. He is crazy through and through. Sad to admit I feel this way, but the world would be a better place if he had blown his own head off.

He didn't even get cited for animal cruelty because they determined the dog 'didn't suffer.' True. He got cited for the bomb and a few other things, but evidently killing a dog is not a crime in Skamania.

OT: Well! Larry O'Donnell just skewered Rush and Sarah on the obesity issue. Had a clip of Sarah from her loser reality show, SPA, about her snarky remark dedicating s'mores to Mrs. Obama's obesity initiative. I guess Bristol listened because she doesn't look as fat as she did when she was doing that dancing show the first time around.

"...UPDATE: Skamania County prosecutors tell KATU that they initially chose charges that would lead to a higher bail for Dillingham. He's still not charged with animal cruelty, but Prosecuting Attorney Adam Kick said the charge is still on the table and "absolutely applicable."

"...Investigators from three agencies -- including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives -- found several pieces of evidence at the property Sunday, KPTV reports. On Monday, Dillingham's bail was set at $500,000."

Based on the few facts provided and my own armchair analysis (which I am not licensed to charge $ for in the US or any foreign countries or territories), I would say his condition has a lot more to do with mental illness than religion. We need to be careful painting everyone with a religious faith with the broad brush of crazy, religious fanatics that kill or maim others purely because of their religious fervor.

As a dog lover and a people lover, this makes me sick to my stomach. I don't know what length of sentence would be appropriate, but any sentence that doesn't include mandatory in-patient mental health diagnosis and treatment is a waste of time and is only delaying the fuse on a ticking time bomb. No puns. Nothing funny here.

If he is truly sane and just an asshole, I would probably end up in jail if I ever encountered this guy--- maybe even for a long time because, as I said, I'm a dog lover. I'm not sure if my solution would help society, but it would make the papers and a few blogs. The only thing worse in my small mind would be to hurt a child, an elderly person, or someone mentally or physically challenged. Not that it's okay to pick on or hurt anyone, but harming, maiming or killing those who we have a responsibility to protect is particularly heinous.

This reminds me of what one of Mike Huckabee's sons did as a Boy Scout at camp in 1998 in Hatfield, Arkansas when he and a 19 yr old accomplice (David Huckabee was 2 weeks shy of his 18th birthday) tortured and killed a dog in the woods by hanging it. The boys were fired, but not prosecuted due to interference by Huckabee, according to the FBI Chief in Little Rock and the head of the AR state police, whom Huckabee fired 7 months later because he wouldn't participate in the cover-up (Sound familiar, Sarah Palin fans?). So why wouldn't Huckabee destroy all of the state records during his tenure as governor by seizing all of the hard drives containing any information pertaining to communication or state business conducted by his office? Oh, it turns out he did. Read any news source from early April, 2011 when Huckabee's latest run at the Presidency melted down. Dog killers and religious fanatics. Just a coincidence, probably. But corrupt Republican governor of a sparsely populated state that exercises political power on family business, destroys careers of civil servants and career lawmen and then lies about it, never admitting wrong? Par for the course.

How can you believe in something unquantifiable and unprovable? Religion IS a mental illness and I'm sorry if this makes you uncomfortable but there is much proof to the contrary regarding biblical prophecy and biblical accounts of what we now call science.

I will never understand religious people and I guess if you were indoctrinated from an early age it may have just become part of your psyche, but you can free yourself from it.

It is true. You can free yourself. It can take a while - but once you see the light, things progress really really quickly. for me, the aha moment came after viewing a little independent film that was advertised on Craig's list, of all places. It was called Loose Change and it pointed out all the anomalies of 9/11 that we were not supposed to notice. Then I joined the chat forum of the film and well, I "grew up" pretty quickly. One thing led to another to another. I started studying about religion - and then I learned there are like 30 old religions with virgin births and crucified saviors...WTF? I didn't learn THAT in catholic school.
Anyway, knowledge is power. It sure was a lot easier to believe in a god than not, while living in the hell hole of a mess this world has become. And I at times wish I never "woke UP", and I often feel lonely as very few of us really are "awake". But, I think that is the test of life on this earth. Did you free yourself or did you get indoctrinated.
Is there anything after life on earth? Actually I think life on earth is a game that we, as higher beings, designed for ourselves. We placed bets in another dimension, on whether we would end up indoctrinated or free as humans having an earth experience. When we die, we either laugh at our foolishness or have bragging rights for NOT falling for it, back in our other dimension!

There is something seriously wrong with a society that does not incarcerate a person who would treat an animal, a family pet at that, so monstrously. If he would do that to the dog, just think what he would do to the first of his children to disobey or talk back. Think how he has treated his children already! This man should not walk the streets again until he is CURED. It's my guess it will take a long time to treat him. No one, animal or human, is safe around him because he obviously sees nothing wrong it what he has done.

  27. This is so tragic I can't read any more about it.

    1. They are NOT charging this mental case with animal cruelty because they say the dog did not suffer but was killed instantly. WTF?

    2. The man who owned the dog moved and couldn't keep the dog and a friend suggested he give it to this family. They had it for 6 months. The former owner is beside himself with grief. He blames himself for not vetting the family more thoroughly even though he did make a home visit prior to giving them the dog.

    3. Don't the authorities consider this mental cruelty and abuse to the CHILDREN? Their nutso father blew up their dog! You don't think these kids are afraid if they step one toe out of line, daddy won't make them wear a special collar and feed them a few cookies before pressing the button?

    4. This guy made a living selling fireworks. He had access to all the black powder he needed and obviously knows how to make a bomb. And he is a certified whacko.

No one sees anything wrong with this?

I cry for this dog. I weep for the children.

And I'd like this guy to be given a special collar and a few pieces of jerky to occupy him before someone presses the button. After all, he won't suffer so it's not like it cruel.

Umm. Sociopathy/psychopathy is a mental illness. There are other possibilities too. From Web MD here's another possibility.

    "What Is Schizophrenia?

"Schizophrenia is a chronic, disabling brain disorder that affects about 1% of Americans. It may cause people to hear voices, see imaginary sights, or believe other people are controlling their thoughts. These sensations can be frightening and often lead to erratic behavior. There is no cure, but treatment can usually control the most serious symptoms.

    "Symptoms of schizophrenia may include:

Hallucinations -- hearing or seeing imaginary things
    Delusions -- wildly false beliefs
Paranoia -- the fear others are plotting against you"
