Chris Matthews discusses Ted Cruz, Sarah Palin, and the future of the Republican party.

This conversation gets very contentious and there is a lot of people talking over each other, but I thought it was a very good indication of the problems that Republicans, in this case represented by GOP strategist John Brabender, are having reconciling the numerous moving parts within their party.

It is becoming clearer then ever that the Republican party is under a very aggressive attack by political insurgents and there may be NO WAY for them to survive intact.

I don't know how anybody is not watching politics these days! I swear there is nothing on television to rival the drama, plot twists, and villainous characters that are contained within this struggle for political dominance.

Lots of people aren't paying attention because it is very confusing for them. Most people inherit their political beliefs along with their religion from their parents. Too much information that conflicts with what they think is their set of beliefs shuts down their ability to use reason to make decisions. They either have to open their minds, completely ignore what is going on or get out the tinfoil hats

You can trace the beginnings of this conflicted confrontational "activity" within the right to Nov. 1, 2009 when Dede Scozzafava withdrew from the NY 23rd's special election to fill the seat created by Obama's bi-partisian pick for Sec. of the Army....and endorsed the Democratic candidate over the teabagger nut-job. Mutual hatered of Obama and anything left of extreme far right kept that betrayal by a moderate republican on simmer. Now, not so much. Sores & scores are looking to be settled.

White House Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett said on ABC's "This Week" that Democrats would "love" to have the Republican candidate back Owens.

"It's rather telling when the Republican Party forces out a moderate Republican and it says, I think, a great deal about where the Republican Party is right now," she said. (2009)

  4. hey, IDIOT-from-WASILA:

Here's what the Reagan had to say about default in 1986:

"Unfortunately, Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinkmanship threatens the holders of government bonds and those who rely on Social Security and veterans benefits. Interest rates would skyrocket, instability would occur in financial markets, and the federal deficit would soar.

"The United States has a special responsibility to itself and the world to meet its obligations. It means we have a well-earned reputation for reliability and credibility -- two things that set us apart from much of the world."

The other day, Chris Matthews talked seriously about Sarah Palin, criticizing her for quitting her job as governor. She was elected to a pretty important office, she swore an oath and she broke that oath. Chris didn't mention that Sarah swore that oath on a Bible, which is supposed to be pretty serious business for her. He saw Sarah's quitting as the reason that she could never run for political office again. There is no explaining it and excusing it.

Sarah Palin exists because her devoted fans think that she is going to run for President. Oh, the time wasn't right in 2012, or God didn't send the right message in time, or she still has young children, or they could make a number of other excuses, but Sarah wasn't going to run. The Republicans closed her out earlier. Her bus trip was a stunt to show them that she could still attract attention. She did, all right, ringing those bells and firing those warning shots and proving that she had no business running for anything because yes, she was that dumb.

Sarah will not run for the senate and she will not run for president in 2016. She has a pretty sweet job right now, having someone post ghost written insults for her on facebook. (Except for the ones that are so badly written that Sarah must have written those herself). As long as money comes into her PAC, it pays for the writers who create more facebook posts which bring in more money. Sweet gig. And for a political action committee, all that Sarah had to do was donate $5,000. someplace to justify it. A job is a job, and Sarah's job is raising money. Oh, and she does it by taking outlandish positions, saying insulting things, throwing red meat to her fans who in turn send more money. What a sweet job.

I found out accidentally when I checked my spam folder for something else that ol' Reincey has been spamming me relentlessly; how the RNC got my email addy and thought I supported them I do not know. I never saw even one of these. Not one ever landed in my inbox. My email spam filter has sent every single one to spam.

Preibus tweeted that he endorsed cruz's plan to shut down the government directly in conflict with Boehner. I am pretty sure Boehner could get ousted if he uses Democrats to pass CR resolution.

I'm actually not enjoying this spectacle .
Republican Peter King said today said that his office staff had been subjected to the most vile and
obscene telephone calls from the Cruz/ Palin / Tea Party people.
Republican Congressman John Boozman of Arkansas
    reported the same thing and
apparently got into it with Cruz over the bullying and obscene phone calls from Cruz supporters at a closed meeting.
King said that Cruz has tapped into a very dark strain in the political psyche.
Just scanning the far right blogs is like being a visitor in a locked psych ward.
The patients are off their meds, out of their straight jackets and clearly out for vengeance.
    That's the most troubling part.
Any poster who dares to make common sense and bring them back to reality is set upon in the most vicious terms.
They are all agitated and in a mouth foaming frenzy.
I've never seen anything like it.
    The few sane posters cannot
get though to the rest that Democrats control the Senate, that's how far gone they are.
And it's on every far right site and regular political blogs.
Cruz has been grotesquely irresponsible in the way he has lied and whipped up the unstable.
No different than shouting " fire " in a theater.
It's like mass hysteria and if anything bad spins off from this, Cruz and Palin and the rest should be held responsible.

I have to agree with you on that! I can usually stomach the Asylum...but today....nope...couldn't do it! The place is no longer just your run of the mill Asylum....nope...those folks are hanging out at the "Baldy Palin's Teabaggers for the Criminially Insane"!

Those motherfuckers have taken complete leave of what ever sense they might have had! The way that "Alameda Republican" who claims to be a WOMAN and a CHRISTIAN verbally assualted the less insane folks over there....AmazedOne1 and AZStandby was some scary ass shit!

You can see the others jumping in like bullies at a playground and beating the shit of A1 and AZ in real life! The moderators have obviously left the "building" (blog) and the inmates have TRULY taken over the Asylum!

They've also been bragging about how they've been calling the Congress folks on the List Baldy posted and leaving messages...till the point that a bunch of the politicians have taken their phones off the hook but the nuts said they are NOT going to stop calling!

      INSANE!

Saw one of the guests on one of the MSNBC shows today say that the calls they are getting in the Congress offices are just awful. Nasty, cussing, etc. to whomever answers the phones. The Congressman has been there for years and said it is the worst he's ever seen or heard it.

Republicans and Teabaggers are a friggin' mess!!! Imagine what the calls are like at the White House! Those poor government workers!

I don't know how anybody is not watching politics these days!

We record all the MSNBC programs from Alex Wagner through Lawrence O'Donnell. We don't have time to watch it all, of course, but it means that when a program is mentioned here as notable we can catch it. We always watch Rachel, usually Lawrence, then Chris Hayes if it's not too late.

This afternoon, though, I spent three hours (well, 2h58) watching The Longest Day. From time to time I diverted myself by imagining some of those patriotic country-first … ummm, people … in the House finding themselves in the middle of the action.

The Republican Leadership dropped the ball when the freshmen tea party candidates were sworn in. Boehner, Cantor, etc. should have corralled them into a room and explained to them how things work in Washington. I know they think they were sent "on a mission from God" (h/t to Blues Brothers) to divide and conquer the GOP while obstructing everything the "Blaaaa Man" (to borrow a quote from Santorum).
If Boehner did his job from jump street, the GOP may have had half a chance at any credibility.
Nancy Pelosi put her nose to the grindstone and got her job done and done well. Boehner didn't earn a penny of his salary, and the GOP is fractured beyond belief.

President Obama, despite every obstacle thrown in his way, did exactly what the people elected him to do while cleaning up the mess that was left for him. Never heard him complain, whine, stomp his feet, or hold anything hostage to get his way.
I was thrilled beyond belief with his speech. He will not negotiate with the full faith and credit of the USA and Obamacare is here to stay.
When the dust settles, people will see the benefits Obamacare has to offer, and there'll be no turning back. The GOP has painted itself in the corner. The tea party has imploded, and the GOP's ratings are lower than dirt.

Chris Matthews had a first-term, Republican young man on his show today that came from his state. The guy was rude as hell - to the point of being obnoxious and ill mannered - kept talking - had specific talking points prepared that you could tell he was going to state come hell or high water. He hated Obamacare and on and on. Was awful to watch - Chris Matthews kept his cool and remained polite. I'd have shut his mike off! He assuredly showed zero respect to Chris Matthews...none!

Then, the next show came on with a Republican female guest and it was much the same thing - rude, had talking points to make and wouldn't shut up.

The Republican guests on all the shows are doing the same talking points as to Obamacare - have it memorized - show true dislike and respect of our president and are telling blatant lies which are being pointed out by the interviewers (at least, they try to!).

Not easy to watch! The Republicans are getting nastier and more aggressive in their communications.

I expect to see many Republicans lose their seats across the nation in the next election cycle. No doubt about it.

Especially if they shut down the government. What utter chaos!

Anon at 7:40 pm. Chris Matthews may have "kept his cool" but he should have corrected the lies being spewed forth by the GOP guests. This is what is so wrong with our media; hosts allow the GOP to lie and lie and remain cool and polite. If a Democrat appears on any news interview program, he or she is chewed up before they get a sentence out. I'm so tired of it and won't watch anymore. Get some guts, Chris Matthews and, when a guest is being outrageous, call him or her out for it. That's your job; other wise the viewers assume that you agree 100% with your guests.

  16. Of course it's all smoke and mirrors. There are no records of a marriage between Eleanor Darragh in the United States to either a Mr Wilson or Rafael Cruz. There is no record of Rafael Cruz's marriage to Julia Garza, either; however, she did continue to use the name Cruz until her death in May. She was a professor of literature (doctorate) and taught at the University of Wisconsin and Stanislaus. They were only married for a few years in the early 60s. He must have completely disassociated himself from his ex-wife and his two daughters, as his name does not appear on any of his ex-wife or his eldest daughter's obituaries (Miriam passed away, aged 49, in 2011). Rafael didn't meet Eleanor at school or even in Texas. He moved to New Orleans in search of work in the mid-60s, and met her there. She is an alumni of Rice University, but Rafael Cruz is not on the alumni roll of the University of Texas, so maybe he didn't graduate. In any event, if he did work 7 days a week to support himself, he was in breach of his visa rules and would have been deported if caught. I find it interesting that he and Eleanor went to Canada to start a company. Maybe it was just a case of competition in the US. Anyway, Rafael B. Cruz & Associates Ltd was sold to the French company CGG in 1974, at which point Rafael and Eleanor separated, and once again he left his wife and baby behind to fend for themselves while he explored "greener pastures". He didn't work in the oil industry again. Instead, he decided to go into the religion business, becoming a lay paster in 1975. (And in case you were wondering, he does not have any credentials from any school of theology and has never been ordained).

About his "escape" from Cuba - his parents were middle-class, and his father was an executive with RCA. Where Rafael grew up was one of the bright spots of the Cuban music scene in the 1940s and 60s. Ted Cruz recalled his grandmother (who moved to the US in 1966 after claiming political asylum, but never learned to speak English) telling the story of Rafael's "imprisonment". He left the house that morning in his nice new white suit and came back in the evening covered in blood. Doesn't sound like Bastista's forces to me, but what do I know? The university students who tried to attack the garrison were all summarily executed. The Cruz family would have been very comfortable in Cuba, but in 1957 it was the professional classes who were hassled by the regime.

I think this was a case of a family that sent their son to America to study, as many families with the financial means do, and that Rafael was supported throughout his stay by his father and mother. He may have done a little work to supplement his income, to travel and have fun. Then when his visa was about to expire, he panicked. He almost simultaneously claimed political asylum and got married to an American woman (Garza), then left her after 2 or 3 years. She was older than him, and they were clearly incompatible. He then (we assume) married Wilson, who was much older than him, either before or after they moved to Canada where, irony of all ironies, Cruz appears to have claimed political asylum again and immediately applied for Canadian citizenship (which he claims he relinquished in 2005 when he became a U.S. citizen).

  17. There was a story yesterday mooting the possibility of Rafael Cruz running for John Cornyn's seat. And Rafael Sr has said he doesn't know if his son will run for President in a way that belied his normal confidence in his son. I think the family background will be Ted's undoing, although incurious Ted might not even know it.

Ask why Rafael's name never appeared in his daughter's obituary - and why Eleanor lost custody of her other children.
