I think it's pretty clear what the problem is -- it's one sixth of our economy! I know tons of people who are involved in the health care industry, a lot of them without even being nurses or doctors. A friend of mine works for a company that makes call systems. She does marketing. She travels a lot. She makes good money. My cousin is in pharmaceutical sales. He got promoted recently. He can afford a giant house in one of the most expensive towns in California. I know someone who's an RN and works for an insurance company. A friend used to work for an architecture firm writing marketing proposals for hospitals. She made good money. The architects made good money. There were a shit ton of them. Another friend is looking to change careers to repair medical devices. People work as phlebotomists. Like, doing blood draws is a job now where that's all you do. They get, what, like $10-15 an hour and benefits? It al adds up. That's why medical care is so expensive, because there's a small army of people providing it....
ReplyDeleteI wish people were required to watch this. I am so damned sick of the right wing that would deny health care. Those bastard Republican congressmen and senators should be required to give up their health insurance and then buy their own under the same standards the public faces. I wish a gigantic boulder would fall on them all.

DeleteWhen some Americans talk about high taxes in Canada to pay for Canadians' healthcare, they "forget" a couple of things:
ReplyDelete1. The high insurance premiums that employers pay come directly OUT of the employee's paycheck.
2. On average, the amount of tax we pay to cover our healthcare is LESS than the insurance premium. It's akin to the savings accruing to a monopoly, I guess! And, EVERYONE is covered, because we believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
However, we do spend more than we should on drugs, equipment, prosthetic devices etc. because each province negotiates on its own instead of negotiating on a federal level, even though funding for healthcare comes from the federal government.
As well, Canadian doctors are paid extremely well in comparison to other countries with universal healthcare, and some say that their incomes (mostly based on fee for service) have risen too high. This is especially true for eye surgeons, because some surgeries (cataract, for example) used to take upwards of an hour, but now the time is reduced to about 20 minutes, meaning that the surgeon is now being paid almost 3 times as much for the same amount of time.
Like every system, updating, upgrading and a fair amount of tweaking to fit current day situations and standards are necessary. The ACA is far from perfect, but I and many of my pals in the U.S. are counting on the ACA before the first, tangible step towards single-payer.
I love John Green (and his brother Hank) -- great writer, funny guy, on the side of good in all areas.

DeleteThe Kochs just injected another half a billion dollars into convincing slow witted Americans that Obamacare is going to cause the end of humanity.
DeleteIt shouldn't work. People should be savvy enough to think about who it is that is spending all that money to buy opinions--and be too skeptical to suck into the scam.
But obviously a lot of folks CAN be fooled all of the time.
Especially the ones who don't watch, or cannot understand what the guy in this video is saying.
If people can ONLY understand ONE THING about "Obamacare" it should be that the insurance companies, who used to pocket 50% and more of what their customers pay in, now have to either spend that money on actual healthcare, or must refund it!
That ONE fact alone, will mean it will cost Americans less...its simple math.
Don't be the last kid on your block to figure that out!
Many retirees go outside the USA for their dental and medical care. The doctors are trained in the USA and they leave the country!

Nope, the American people are solidly against what they have been told is Obamacare by lying right-wingers. When asked about the specific provisions of Obamacare, such as no more caps, no more exclusions for pre-existing conditions, no more being kicked off your policy for getting sick, being able to keep your kids on your policy until age 26, covered preventive care without co-pays, and on and on and on, the people are solidly for Obamacare.
