Courtesy of the Atlantic:
The government is still shut down, as thousands of workers go without pay, food goes without inspection, and sick patients go without clinical trials. Meanwhile, Republicans have offered to restore funding on a piece-by-piece basis that would pay some of those workers and treat some of those patients.
The president has said no. But why, CBS White House Correspondent Mark Knoller asked at the press conference today.
Obama responded that while he's "certainly tempted" to take up the GOP offers, he didn't want to fund slivers of the government, one at a time. On the one hand, funding the discretionary budget bit by bit spares the most headline-y victims and lessens the pain of shutdown. On the other hand, the piecemeal approach ... well, spares the most headline-y victims and lessens the pain of shutdown, prolonging the crisis, itself.
So, depending on how you look at it, the piecemeal approach is both a plan to fund government as soon as possible and a plan to leave government unfunded as long as possible.
There is a graph for this (Seen up at the top.), of course. Michael Linden counts up the six piecemeal non-defense appropriations bills passed by the House (and unsigned by the president) and the eight other bills the House wants to pass in the coming weeks. "Together, these 14 bills allocate approximately $83.1 billion in funding," Linden writes. That would leave 82 percent of the $470 billion non-defense discretionary government unfunded.
Actually I did not need a graph to understand why it was a stupid idea to fund the government ONE PROGRAM AT A TIME! And when that guy from CBS asked the President that question during the press conference I yelled "NOOOO!"
The President needs to, and in my opinion will, hold firm until the Republicans do their damn job and stop holding the country hostage.
However, just like the Atlantic article says, that will NOT happen if the Republicans can ease the pressure on them by getting a few of their pet programs funded and look like they are being reasonable, when they are being anything but.
If he allows them to pressure him into give even an inch, all of this hardship will be for nothing, and for some it will continue indefinitely.
But if he holds tight, I think this cartoon sums up the outcome nicely.
What did Sarah Palin snark on Newark Mayor Corey Booker about again? Violent statistics in his city while he's busy Tweeting from Hollywood? Why did Sarah Palin quit the Governorship of Alaska? To what? Progress Alaska without the shackles of a PC title?
ReplyDeleteLook at this dirty big secret in her backyard. . .
"one in two women living in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough have experienced intimate partner violence, sexual violence, or both. In the last year alone, 2,687 women in this populous region north of Anchorage experienced it. Of the some 30,000 women that live there, 16,033 have been subjected to it in their lifetime. The numbers show that more than six women per day in the Mat-Su experience intimate partner violence, while more than two per day experience sexual violence."

Oh, but let's worry about a famed author peering in Piper's window, ogling a running-shorts clad quitting Governor mowing the lawn with a child strapped to her back, or Bristol - under Secret Service guard, being afraid in her house for pranksters calling her published cell number.
She's got her heels on, her skirt up and she's running to New Jersey to shake her pom poms for Lonegan, the douchebag teaparty nutcase running against Booker. She said "Newark needs a leader, not a tweeter", what's the phrase? Kettle calling the fire black? Hurry, Sarah - New Jersey can't WAIT!!!
DeleteGryphen, if you haven't seen this, you might want to watch it. Boy does it blow the lid off of St. Ronnie's economic policies!
ReplyDeleteIn 1979, Louis Malle traveled into the heart of Minnesota to capture the everyday lives of the men and women in a prosperous farming community. Six years later, during Ronald Reagan’s second term, he returned to find drastic economic decline. Free of stereotypes about America's heartland, God's Country, commissioned for American public television, is a stunning work of emotional and political clarity.

Yesterday, eight days into the Republican government shutdown, President Obama spoke from the White House about the need for Republicans in Congress to stop threatening another recession just to sabotage Obamacare, stop demanding ransom just for doing their jobs, and just vote to reopen the government. He talked about the toll this shutdown is already taking on our country and the economy, and warned against the dire consequences of a default if Congress doesn’t act to prevent an economic shutdown.
ReplyDeleteKeeping the government running and paying the nation’s bills aren’t bargaining chips or a matter of negotiation – they’re a fundamental part of Congress’s job. Here’s how the President put it yesterday:
"If you're in negotiations around buying somebody's house, you don't get to say, 'Well, let's talk about the price I'm going to pay, and if you don't give the price then I'm going to burn down your house.' That's not how negotiations work.... In the same way, members of Congress -- and the House Republicans in particular -- don't get to demand ransom in exchange for doing their jobs. And two of their very basic jobs are passing a budget and making sure that America is paying its bills."

Actually, that's exactly how the Mafia works. They offer to buy your business way below market value and if you don't sell, they burn it down.
DeleteIt's an offer you can't refuse.
Yeah, that pretty well sums up the Republican Party.
The government shutdown has caused Independents to flee the Republican Party. According to PPP, Democrats now lead Republicans with Independents, 42%-33%.
ReplyDeleteIn July, Republicans led against generic Dem by 12% among Independents. Now, post-GOP shutdown of the government and mid-debt ceiling hijacking, they are losing by 9%, according to a new Public Policy Polling poll. This leaves Republicans with a 5% deficit against a generic Democrat. This is very bad news for Republicans.
President Obama is holding steady in public opinion post shutdown, with an approval rating of 45/52, “almost identical to his 45/51 numbers before the shutdown in our last national poll.” Among registered voters, 53% blame Congress, while only 43% blame Obama.
But Republicans aren’t faring nearly so well. If the House election were today, 46% would choose Democrats over 41% for Republicans. Republicans trail Democrats by 5% overall, in no small part due to the defection of Independents, who would go 42% for Democrats right now and 33% for Republicans. That’s a 9 point loss.
The reason for the shift is that Independents blame Republicans more than Democrats for the shutdown by 51% to 37%. In July, Independents were 39% for Republicans and 27% for Democrats.
Independents have shifted 21 points on the generic ballot from July when Republicans had a 39/27 advantage with them.

Uh oh, trouble at the North Pole:
ReplyDeleteAlaska sinks as climate change thaws permafrost
NORTH POLE, Alaska (USA TODAY) -- Up the road from Santa Claus Lane, past the candy cane-striped streetlamps, Cathy Richard's backyard has a problem that not even elves - or the big guy in red - could fix.
The wood deck moves up and down, like a slow-motion sleigh. "You leave for work and when you come home, it can be 7 inches higher," says Richard, 36, a married bookkeeper and mom of three children.
She knows the Grinch involved. Her home in this Fairbanks suburb, built in 2007, sits on land that thaws and refreezes so the concrete pillars holding up her deck have crumbled. The front walkway and garage floor are also cracking, and the lumpy lawn has fissures.
Bad news for Richard - and, for the rest of us. Warmer temperatures are thawing the surface layer of land that covers most of Alaska and is known as permafrost (frozen below for at least two years in a row.) This thawing not only damages roads, buildings and airport runways, but also releases vast amounts of greenhouse gases that further warm the atmosphere - not just over Richard's house but worldwide.
The nation's last frontier is - in many ways - its ground zero for climate change. Alaska's temperatures are rising twice as fast as those in the lower 48, prompting more sea ice to disappear in summer. While this may eventually open the Northwest Passage to sought-after tourism, oil exploration and trade, it also spells trouble as wildfires increase, roads buckle and tribal villages sink into the sea.

REPUBLICANITIS...the disease that is claiming millions across North America.
ReplyDeleteIts symptoms are self hatred, the fear of anyone that can be construed as "other;" and the mindless worship of the rich and powerful.
Manifests with a frightening willingness to accept every single idea put forth by another Republican, no matter how insane it is.
Self medicated by many, by purchasing high powered weapons, and by hoarding items such as aspirin.
At this date, there is no known cure, but a withdrawal from viewing a certain television station, has been found to slow the progress of this disease.
Being a mother of two adult children I have some experience. This is nothing more than "Dealing with 2Yr olds 101" Luckily our pres has young children and has some recent practice. Hope he holds firm.

The piecemeal attempt by the GOP to fund a few cherry-picked programs is not exactly what I would call an honest effort to negotiate. I'm glad that Obama and Reid are not falling for it. If the GOP dominated House would just vote on the CR to end the government shutdown, all those programs plus others that are just as important would be funded.
ReplyDeleteTheir idea of negotiating:
DeleteWe'll refuse 18 invitations to conference because we don't like you and we're still mad that the black guy is living in the White House. We'll wait until the deadline is reached and we have some good hostages.
After you agree to our budget numbers, we'll change our minds and ask for more...and then say it's all your fault for not negotiating.
If you don't give us everything we want (while we give you absolutely NOTHING) we'll shut down the government and say it's all your fault for not being reasonable.
Then we'll agree to fund only the things we like. We don't like any of the things that you like so we won't fund those. :P
We'll make sure the cameras are rolling and then yell at National Park Rangers for keeping people out of the parks that we shut down. And say it's all your fault.
Then we'll take pictures of very old, sad veterans in wheelchairs who can't get into the memorials we shut down. And say it's all your fault.
If you STILL don't give us everything we want, we'll send the country into default which will then send the entire world into an economic collapse. And say it's all your fault. Because you didn't give us everything we wanted. Even though we didn't win in 2012.
Then we'll go to the banks and cash our checks from Koch Industries which were sent to us as a thank you for creating a 2-class society of mega-rich people and people so desperate to survive that slavery seems like a good option.
Oh, and...You're mean.
I just sent President Obama a note of encouragement (don't know if he'll actually get it, of course!). He has to be under so much pressure - handling these gd Republicans and the middle east on going mess.
ReplyDeleteSuggest more Americans do it too. He is looking thinner. He's doing a great job and doesn't get enough credit for it. The TV media/reporters are horrible (all say the exact same thing!) and I'm glad he didn't take questions from any of them yesterday after his Press Conference. They do NOT deserve his attention!
Thanks for the suggestion...I just did the same thing. I know he won't actually get the message but I hope that someone in some office (or a computer somewhere) is keeping track of the kind of messages he receives and that they make just the tiniest difference.
DeleteIf nothing else, it made me feel better for doing it!
I'm joining you, excellent idea! Even if he doesn't see it, it can't hurt.
DeleteRead today that Congressional approval rate is down to 5%. That poll has a 3.4% margin of error so the approval rate COULD be as low as 1.6%.
ReplyDeleteAlan Grayson breaks it down!

Obamacare fight gets too hot for Kochs: We’re not backing GOP’s shutdown tactics

A middle-aged man in a red golf shirt shuffles up to a small folding table with gold trim, in a booth adorned with a flotilla of helium balloons, where government workers at the Kentucky State Fair are hawking the virtues of Kynect, the state’s health benefit exchange established by Obamacare.
ReplyDeleteThe man is impressed. "This beats Obamacare I hope," he mutters to one of the workers.
“Do I burst his bubble?” wonders Reina Diaz-Dempsey, overseeing the operation. She doesn't. If he signs up, it's a win-win, whether he knows he's been ensnared by Obamacare or not.
...But Diaz-Dempsey has a secret weapon: tote bags, designed with a tableau of Kentucky residents under a bright sun and the Kynect logo. The state had spent millions establishing the exchange, staffing up outreach, and conducting market research that included holding a dozen focus groups in Louisville, Paducah and London, according to Gwenda Bond, assistant communications director with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services. The respondents, according to the final focus-group report, felt the logo designs were “comforting,” “hopeful” and “reassuring.” The bags stuck to that theme. They showed only one obese character.
Diaz-Dempsey and company cannot hold onto the bags. At a recent Louisville Bats minor league game, Kynect staff say they handed out 600 bags in 20 minutes (“It was Bobblehead Night too.”). In less than seven days at the fair, they've given out roughly 15,000 bags. Kentucky voters may hate the idea of government handouts for the uninsured, but they had their hands out for these tote bags. With each bag, Diaz-Dempsey and her staff drop packets of information on signing up for Obamacare into outstretched hands.
